What a great golf season! Thank you to the entire Fiddler’s Creek Membership for your participation in the various golf club events.

The Golf Staff, led by Head Golf Professional Michael Saccameno, organized and operated a fantastic golf program geared to maximizing everyone’s enjoyment of the game. Michael has done an outstanding job in leading the golf staff in providing world class service in a friendly manner on a daily basis. Additionally, Michael has stocked The Golf Shop with the finest golf apparel on the market. We all appreciate our member’s support of The Golf Shop.

Also, Andrew Filbert and Gary Cahill, in conjunction with Kevin Thompson, have done a terrific job in controlling all facets of the inside and outside golf operation.

We look forward to providing our year-round residents with a summer full of great golf, not only at our club, but also at our many reciprocal clubs. Please call The Golf Shop at (239) 732-3030 to learn about these reciprocal clubs, as well as to book your tee times.

Finally, on behalf of the entire Golf Staff, I wish our departing seasonal residents a summer of golfing fun at your northern clubs and look forward to your return to Fiddler’s Creek this fall.

John CalabriaDirector of Golf Operations and Sales

The month of May is the beginning of reciprocity and also the beginning of our summer closing schedule. In May, we start closing on Mondays and will allow the course management team to perform routine cultural practices necessary to keep up with the increased growth of the turf due to the increase in soil temperature and day length.

In the months of June, July and August, we will be closing for nine consecutive days for extensive course management practices or “Cultural Practices.” These cultural practices consist of deep tine aerification, heavy topdressing and preventative chemical applications to manage annual insect and nematode infestations along with fertilizer applications.

Continue to repair divots and ball marks, be conscientious of cart traffic patterns and use the road less traveled. Your “on course etiquette” is greatly appreciated and will be rewarded by better course conditions. Enjoy the course!

Thank you,

Jim VajenDirector of Golf Course and Community Landscaping

Message from the TOP

Congratulations to all of our Club Champions and Men’s & Ladies’ Invitational winners.

On behalf of the entire Golf Staff, we wanted to thank all of our Fiddler’s Creek members for their participation in our Member events this past season. It has been extremely rewarding coordinating all the events for you. We had record participation

in almost every one held this year. That is a great sign for the success of our events and the growth of the Golf Club. A special thanks to the Ladies’ and Men’s Golf Committees for their support and efforts throughout the season. Their input is greatly appreciated.

Preparation for next season’s events is well underway. The calendar will be completed over the summer months and placed on the member website, www.fiddlerscreekgolf.com. Please mark your calendar accordingly.

Finally, I would like to give special thanks to the Golf Staff and the entire staff at Fiddler’s Creek. It is an absolute pleasure to be around so many talented and driven people. The combination of teamwork and passion for the service has been the key to making our club so successful.

I wish a great summer of golf for all of you, and we look forward to seeing you again this fall.

Thank you,Michael Saccameno PGA Head Golf Professional

We Love the Fiddler’s Creek Community:

Meet the Gilmores Bob & Eileen Gilmore

Q: When did you become a member of The Golf Club at Fiddler’s Creek?A: We became members in 2005.

Q: In which Fiddler’s Creek village do you live?A: We originally purchased a beautiful condo in Cascada, however, we just built a new home in Mahogany Bend.

Q: Why did you choose Fiddler’s Creek?A: Eileen’s parents have been spending the winter months in the Marco Island/Naples area for the past 30 years. We got a call from them about a new place they had found to come down and check it out. Eileen and I loved Fiddler’s, but we spent the next couple of years looking around, but after each visit to another community we always looked at each other and said, “It is not Fiddler’s Creek.”

Q: Are you a seasonal or annual resident of Naples? If seasonal, where else do you spend the year?A: We really cannot be called a seasonal or annual resident as we only come down for long weekends once in a while and spend part of Thanksgiving and Easter holidays here.

Q: Which is your favorite hole on The Creek Course and why?A: The Creek Course is just a truly challenging test of your ability to play golf under all conditions. If I had to pick one, I guess it would be #12.

Q: What other activities do you enjoy when you’re not golfing?A: Eileen and I both love to ride our bikes, we enjoy the happy hours at The Gator Grille and Sunset Dinners at Sale e Pepe.

Q: What do you like to do outside of Fiddler’s Creek?A: The beautiful thing about Fiddler’s Creek is you really never need to go off “campus,” everything you need is right here. When we do, we will usually go to Naples to enjoy the nightlife, shopping or dining in one of the many fine restaurants. We also have many friends from our Club in Jersey who live on the west coast, so we will visit them and share good times.

Q: What made you take up the game of golf?A: I started playing golf in my twenties just to do something different. Golf has opened up many opportunities for me both professionally and personally, afforded me the chance to meet and make many great friends and memories. Eileen started taking lessons as a young lady but only took up the game seriously when we started vacationing in Bermuda with our friends.

Q: Do you participate in any golf events? Which is your favorite?A: I always play in the Men’s Invitational, which is my favorite event at Fiddler’s. I have had the good fortune to meet many of the great members who participate, but best of all the guests who seem to come back every year have become good friends, too.

Q: Have you ever played golf overseas? Where and how was the experience?A: I have played in Scotland and Ireland, Eileen in Ireland. It is definitely a different game and quite the experience to play under the conditions. The weather can be a little difficult but you know that when going. The interaction with the caddies in both countries was priceless.

Q: What’s your favorite golf course?A: I have played many of the top 50 courses all over the country, but the one course that always stands out as my favorite is Shinnecock on Long Island. It is one of the most challenging and scenic golf courses over the entire 18 holes that you will ever see.

Q: Tell us about your family.A: Eileen and I have three beautiful daughters, Cristin, Erin and Catherine. Cristin was just married in September to her husband Brian. Erin just earned her master’s degree in speech language pathology and is working in the medical field and Catherine is a senior at Monmouth University in Jersey, pursuing her degree in psychology.

Q: Anything else you would like to share?A: Eileen and I are really happy to be a part of the Fiddler’s community. We have met so many great people and have made many wonderful friendships along the way. Just because there is a great golf course here at Fiddler’s, it doesn’t guarantee a great golf club. People make a club and I can honestly say we have a great club due to the members who make it that way. It has been very easy to fit in here, it reminds me so much of my club in New Jersey—great golf course but better people, which is why we are so comfortable here.

Better Tempo for Better ResultsWhen a golfer hits a 7-iron, then a driver, he or she invariably amps up the swing speed with the longer club. One would think the club head of the driver moves faster because it’s longer, but in fact it’s because of the principles of physics, not because the golfer is swinging the club with a faster tempo.

Tempo is the total amount of time it takes to create your golf swing from beginning to end. Some players have a relatively fast tempo, while others have a slower tempo. Either way is fine, as long as you keep the same tempo for each club in the bag. Golfers get into trouble when they either slow down or speed up their natural tempo.

When your tempo starts varying from club to club, the timing required to hit consistent golf shots is destroyed. That’s one reason why you feel you can hit your irons well one day, but not the woods, and vice versa. For every club in the bag, the tempo should be the same. It should take the same amount of time to make a swing with your pitching wedge as it does for the 7-iron and the driver, for example. What’s different is the speed of the club head. Because the driver is longer than a wedge, the club head moves faster throughout the swing. But if it takes two seconds to swing a wedge, it should take the same two seconds to swing the driver.

Discover your ideal tempo by making three continuous practice swings, without a ball, using a 5-iron. Make the swings in a pendulum fashion, back and through, while maintaining good balance. Then hit a teed golf ball, focusing on repeating the same tempo with a balanced finish. Perform this drill with short irons, long irons and woods, as well, to see if your tempo—and timing remain constant.
