READY...STEADY... GO... !

Forty-two! That’s how many of you have joined the race to be the next Student Executive. It’s definitely a Union record, and means we’re looking forward to the biggest week of election campaigning campus has ever seen.

The Leadership Race isn’t the only thing getting us excited; though if you saw Marcus at the line-up announcement, you’ll know the Summer Ball is too! The main news is starry-eyed sensation Ellie Goulding has grabbed the top spot, backed by a line-up that will keep everyone happy – check out the full list on page 6 and 7. We can’t wait!

This month we’ve also got the Christie Championships (which we’re hosting!) which is one of the biggest events in the sporting calendar, plus we’re starting our search for next year’s community and school reps.

Finally, this month sees the launch of the first ever Student Choice Awards which is a really great way for you to recognise the academic or rep that has made a difference to your degree. With loads of categories for you to nominate someone in we’ve made sure no one will go unnoticed. Get submitting your nominations today!

YASMIN

First recognised for her abilities on the decks, Yasmin’s singing career began when she featured on the single Runaway by Devlin. Its success led to her being signed by the Ministry of Sound where she’s already released On My Own, while the upcoming Finish Line shows what she’s capable of.

CASPA

He might be a well-established face on the Dubstep scene, but Caspa knows how to put together the freshest of sets. His repertoire of remixes covers everyone from Miike Snow to Swedish House Mafia, with a solid supply of self produced tracks to boot.

There are still more acts to announce for the 2011 Summer Ball line up*. Follow the #leedssummerball hash tag on twitter to keep up to date with all the latest news, updates and further line up announcements.

Who will lead 32,000 students? Your vote

will decide... Shape the future of Leeds University Union by electing six

students to become next year’s Student Executive and lead the 32,000 students at Leeds.

There are 42 candidates in this year’s race, making it the biggest ever. Your vote will decide which six will be employed full time for the next year to listen to what you want – and work to make it happen.

This year we’re doing more than ever to make voting accessible. Not only can you vote online from any computer, there’s also a mobile voting app and we’ll have roaming voting tablets out across campus.

One of the biggest concerns ahead of elections is not knowing who to vote for, but this year we think we’ve got that covered too. We’re using VoteMatch for the first time to make deciding who to support really straight forward – you just need to answer a series of questions and the system will identify which candidates’ views are the closest matched to your own.

The Leadership Race is important because it ensures we're providing effective representation and embracing your needs as we work towards our vision of making sure every student loves their time at Leeds. Take a look at ‘what have they done?’ to see what this year’s Student Exec have achieved so far this year.

HOW TO VOTE

Choose who you’re voting for. View the candidates online, look out for their campaigns, use VoteMatch (www.votematch.org.uk) if you’re unsure who shares your views.

Head to leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/elections between 10.00am, Monday 14th March and 4.00pm Thursday 17th March. Login using your ISS username and password and start voting! We use the single-transferrable vote (STV) so don’t forget to number candidates in order of preference.

Tell your friends! The first 6,000 students to vote will recieve free printer credits!

What have they done? From successful lobbying of First Buses to leading students’ protests against fees, this year’s Student Exec have kept themselves busy. Last month’s mental health campaign boosted walk-in visits to the Student Counselling service by 150%, and there’s loads of consultation just starting that will make sure the University is meeting the needs and expectations of students.

Stock up on

discount cards

Everyone has the first step to discount heaven already tucked away in their wallet – the humble student card. But how many use it to the max? Ask everywhere you go if you’re not sure if they give student discount – you’ll be surprised how many do!

The NUS Extra card costs just £11 for the year and offers an exclusive range of discounts not available with a regular student card. From Cross Country Trains to Amazon, if you’re a frequent shopper at any of the places supported, you could save in the long term.

A Young Person’s Railcard is only £23.40 when you buy online, and offers 1/3 off rail fares across Britain. While you’re at it, pick up a Bite card for free (bitecard.co.uk) to save 20% at loads of train station food outlets.

Start

budgeting

Without a doubt the biggest thing you can do to help you get a grasp on your finances is budget.

It doesn’t have to be confusing spreadsheets and tedious totting up though. New services like moneydashboard.com connect to your online banking service and ‘tag’ transactions making it easy to spot the black hole in your spending habits.

At the busy times of year it would be good to have a foolproof budgeting system. Set up a secondary account and transfer a fixed amount into it each week by standing order and it’s much easier to see what you’re spending. Ended up with a surplus at the end of the week? You’ve earned yourself a guilt-free reward!

Spot the deals and vouchers

that make luxuries a little

lighter on your wallet

Studentbeans.com is full of 50% off and 2 for 1 offers on top restaurants, great for birthday meals out that won’t break the bank.

Groupon runs great daily deals that vary from the good to the incredible. Well worth checking out regularly.

The week commencing March 7th is National Student Money Week when we’ll be promoting money-saving all around the Union. There’ll also be professional money advisers from the Advice Centre on-hand to offer information and advice.

3This year it’s our turn to host the 125th Christie Championships – a three-way varsity between Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool

which dates back to 1886.

Come along to support our teams and make sure we win the Christie Trophy! It’s the second oldest Varsity in the country after Oxbridge, and a huge event in the sporting calendars of all three institutions, involving more than 1,500 students battling it out in over 30 different sports.

On Wednesday 30th March, events will be held throughout the day across The Edge and Gryphon Sport Centres, as well as the Weetwood and Lawnswood grounds. There’s a wide range of sports taking place, including football, rugby, fencing, water polo and mountaineering.

Once all fixtures have been played and all points totalled, the winner of this year’s Christie Cup will be announced at the presentation in Stylus. This will be followed by Christie Fruity – tickets are available from CATS in the Union Building and LeedsTickets.com.

Check out the Christie Championships 2011 Facebook page and the Union website for full fixtures details.

The Christie Championships are proudly sponsored by Aldi.

For this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight event, we want everyone to get loud and proud about Fairtrade and ‘Show off your label’.

This is two whole weeks to tell everyone you know about the difference Fairtrade makes to the lives of farmers who grow the products we enjoy in the UK.

The value of UK Fairtrade sales has grown more than tenfold since 2001, reaching nearly £700 million in 2008 and

Fairtrade now helps more than 7.5 million people – farmers, workers and their families – to have more security and control over their lives.

Here at LUU, we are proud to support Fairtrade by stocking as many products as possible. Fairtrade Fortnight is our chance to show off our passion for Fairtrade, and your chance to discover the range of Fairtrade products we sell and how what you buy can make a difference.

Climate Week This year alone, Leeds University Campus will release almost 70,000 tonnes of CO2. Added to this are the lifestyles of over 30,000 students from 130 countries, with over 7,000 members of staff. Climate Week 2011 is an opportunity to learn about our impact on the environment; as individuals, a campus, city wide, nationally and globally. LUU will play host to a range of events and activities, from bicycle powered film showings to lunch time debates and Give It A Go sessions to ethical food cookery classes. The week aims to show that change is possible and necessary if we wish to continue to live and work in a world that is sustainable, and to pass on something worth having to those who follow.
