Think how far people will have to travel for next year’s World Cup,

Germany 2006…

• Think about how many players from all around the world will travel to Germany

• Imagine how many fans will visit Germany

• Imagine how many people will be watching the games on their TVs

Why do companies want to sponsor football clubs?

Everton sell a lot of shirts in Asia because they are sponsored by Chang beer (an Asian

beer) and have a Chinese player, Li Tie

Clubs spend their money in lots of ways…

• Improving stadiums• Buying players• Paying the team’s wages• Paying other staff• Organising matches• Travelling to away matches• Training youth teams• Working with schools

Who are the losers?(and I don’t mean Sunderland!)• Thierry Henry is paid £1500 per day to

kick a football• The football is made of rubber and

synthetic leather, which would cost £60 in the shops

• The footballs are made in Pakistan,m who make 75% of all the world’s footballs, which is 35 million each year

Omar’s Story

• I have been stitching footballs since I was 8. I don’t want to. But I have to, because my dad died and we need the money. My mum used to do them too but now she has trouble with her eyes. So I have to support my family.

• I work in a stitching centre. I start at 7 in the morning and often work till 8 in the evening. I can do 4 footballs a day, so I earn £2 a day. But they can throw me out any time. I don’t know what I will do if that happens.

• I get tired of sewing all day. My fingers are all cut. I would love to go to school, but no chance!

• I saw a World Cup match on the TV at my uncle’s house. The football could have been mine. But no-one at the match knew about me!

Is this fair?

• Football is fun - for some. Not for the children of Pakistan who stitch footballs to help their families survive.

• The International Labour Organisation says that between 5,000 and 7,000 children in Sialkot in Pakistan, aged from 5 to 14, work in the football industry.
