Numbers• Number : a high number - a low number• Figures : it is important to give the exact figures of ... / a round figure• Digit : chiffre

• 15,300 : fifteen thousand three hundred people PAS DE ‘S’ • DOZEN, MILLION, THOUSAND, HUNDRED sont invariables sauf avant of :

dozens of students...• la plupart de: mostObserve the use of the article:Most unruly schoolchildren are boys. Most of the children who completed their study course were children with no

behavior issue. L’emploi de l’article n’est pas lié à la traduction de ‘la’ dans ‘la plupart’ mais à

la détermination éventuelle du nom en anglais. In most cases, the gender gap is being bridged. In most of the cases that were reported in this enquiry, the children failed at

school.

Quantities• Significant quantities (sizeable amounts of): many / much (u)Many pupils underachieve.Much work and patience is required to succeed. so many /much ... thatTwice (three times, half…) as many / much asTwice as many black pupils as white ones are punished at school. • A LOT OF - LOTS OF – hoards of, loads of• Small quantity of: FEW (a few) / LITTLEVery few youths reported being severely bullied. A few were lying. Very little hope is left.• Any s’emploie dans les phrases négatives, le plus souvent + hardly, barely. There was hardly any problem which remained unexplored. • Dans les phrases negatives any peut laisser place à no si l’on veut insister sur la

négation. There isn’t any case in which misbehaviour was not punished. In no case did misbehaviour remain unpunished.

Commentary

• Over a twelve-year period, the situation has remained fairly stable.

• Within a decade, no major dramatic / significant / noticeable change can be observed.

• On the whole, one may say that school achievement has steadily increased. There has been a steady increase in grades.

• Over the given period, girls’ gardes are roughly 10 points higher than boys’. Girls still outperform boys.

This bar chart indicates that girls do better than boys in reading. The difference between girls and boys widens with time: the older the pupils, the wider the gap.

9 year-old school girls do better in math than their male counterparts but afterwards boys get much better results and remain the best achievers.

The largest difference in terms of achivement between girls and boys is that in reading when they are 17 year of age.

Differences in terms of achievement get more and more important.
