Who are the Friends?

Membership of the Friends is open to all creeds and nationalities who careabout and have an interest in the Cathedral and AbbeyChurch of Saint Alban. In medieval times the Fraternity of the Friends was a specially honoured group of benefactors and supporters of theAbbey. These included kings, queens and nobles such as Humphrey, Dukeof Gloucester whose chapel and tomb are within the Abbey. Benefactors also

came from the wider public - they were all united in their love forthis place and in honour of God and the first martyr of Britain, Saint Alban.Today, having been re-established in 1949, the Fraternity of Friends is a

linked group of people, churches, and organisations who

love and care for this place. We contact and pray for linked churches acrossthe world. We give practical advice and support for projects which enhance theAbbey church and its precincts. Recent examples of work supportedby the Friends include cards and publications about the Abbey, projectssupporting the Education Centre, helping purchase the Alban Pilgrimage

figures, repairing the carillon in the bell tower, the sponsoring of boy and girl

choristers, a new suite of furniture for the nave sanctuary and perspex angels

in the Ramryge Chantry Chapel.
