Finley’s Newsletter VOLUME 6, ISSUE 5 FINLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH NOVEMBER/DECEMBER/JANUARY 2016 /17 FROM OUR PASTOR November/December 2016 January 2017 Dear Finley Church family, During these past few months I have been preaching on Revival and the need for it in God’s Church today. In my heart I sense the need to be “all in” for Jesus and God’s Kingdom. We can’t have one foot in the world and one foot in Christ and expect to be on fire and set-apart for Jesus Christ! I say this because of the day of age we live in. We need to be ready, as Christians, to be able to face the cost of being a Christian. I preached from Daniel, chapter 3 about Daniel’s three friends, Shadrach, Meshach and AbedNego. They stood up to the evil system and government of their day (Babylonians) and faced the fiery furnace. They didn’t Bend, they didn’t Bow and they didn’t Burn! Ultimately, they cared about following God more than being disobedient to God. These were some of the main points I made during this sermon from Daniel chapter 3: Lessons we learn from Shadrach, Meshach and AbedNego: (Vv. 1-7) 1) The WORSHIP was false (Vs. 1) 2) The PRESSURE was enormous (Vv. 2-7) 3) The STAKES were deadly (Vv. 4-6) 4) The CROWD was “waxed over” (Vs. 7) (worship of a false god) 5) The GOVERNMENT was “all ruling” (Vs. 1) (King Nebuchadnezzar) Daniels friends: (Vv. 12-18) 1) Loved God more than self (Vs. 12) 2) Didn’t care about their security (Vv. 13-15) 3) Wouldn’t blame God if He didn’t “spare them.” (Vv. 17-18) These points are from the time period and pressure to conform to the gods of their day. I believe if we love Jesus more than systems and earthly kingdoms, we will also face these same types of choices as God’s people - at some point in America. I said in this sermon, “You have to be ‘on fire’ before you get into the Fire.” Are you “on fire” for Jesus? Is there anything competing for Lordship in your life against Jesus Christ? Are you “sold out” to loving God more than systems, people, things or comforts of ease? Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:24, “(24) No one can serve two Masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” I believe this applies not only to money, but anything that vies for our attention and allegiance. May the Lord Jesus empower us, His Church, to be faithful and true in these godless days we find ourselves living in! Love you with all of my heart, Pastor Jerry Ernst

Finley’s Newsletter VOLUME 6, ISSUE 5 FINLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH NOVEMBER/DECEMBER/JANUARY 2016 /17

FROM OUR PASTOR

November/December 2016

January 2017

Dear Finley Church family,

During these past few months

I have been preaching on

Revival and the need for it in

God’s Church today. In my

heart I sense the need to be

“all in” for Jesus and God’s

Kingdom. We can’t have one

foot in the world and one foot

in Christ and expect to be on

fire and set-apart for Jesus

Christ! I say this because of

the day of age we live in. We

need to be ready, as

Christians, to be able to face

the cost of being a Christian.

I preached from Daniel,

chapter 3 about Daniel’s three

friends, Shadrach, Meshach

and AbedNego. They stood

up to the evil system and

government of their day

(Babylonians) and faced the

fiery furnace. They didn’t

Bend, they didn’t Bow and

they didn’t Burn! Ultimately,

they cared about following

God more than being

disobedient to God. These

were some of the main points

I made during this sermon

from Daniel chapter 3:

Lessons we learn from

Shadrach, Meshach and

AbedNego: (Vv. 1-7)

1) The WORSHIP was false

(Vs. 1)

2) The PRESSURE was

enormous (Vv. 2-7)

3) The STAKES were

deadly (Vv. 4-6)

4) The CROWD was

“waxed over” (Vs. 7) (worship of a false god)

5) The GOVERNMENT

was “all ruling” (Vs. 1)

(King Nebuchadnezzar)

Daniels friends: (Vv. 12-18)

1) Loved God more than

self (Vs. 12)

2) Didn’t care about their

security (Vv. 13-15)

3) Wouldn’t blame God if

He didn’t “spare them.”

(Vv. 17-18)

These points are from the

time period and pressure to

conform to the gods of their

day. I believe if we love

Jesus more than systems and

earthly kingdoms, we will

also face these same types of

choices as God’s people - at

some point in America. I said

in this sermon, “You have to

be ‘on fire’ before you get

into the Fire.”

Are you “on fire” for Jesus?

Is there anything competing

for Lordship in your life

against Jesus Christ? Are you

“sold out” to loving God

more than systems, people,

things or comforts of ease?

Jesus tells us in Matthew

6:24, “(24) No one can serve

two Masters. Either he will

hate the one and love the

other, or he will be devoted

to the one and

despise the other. You

cannot serve both God and

Money.”

I believe this applies not only

to money, but anything that

vies for our attention and

allegiance.

May the Lord Jesus empower

us, His Church, to be faithful

and true in these godless days

we find ourselves living in!

Love you with all of my

heart,

Pastor Jerry Ernst

FINANCE As of this writing our 2017

church budget is 99% complete.

The amounts for one or two line

items are currently subject to

minor change before our

November 2016 Administrative

Council Meeting. Our

preliminary 2017 church budget

of $284,242 is $12,416 less than

our 2016 budget of $296,658.

To cover our 2017 fixed

expenses we will need an

average of $17,751 each month,

as compared to $20,861 this

year. To cover our expenses for

the entire 2017 budget, we will

need an average of $20,145 each

month, as compared to $24,722

this year. The Finance

Committee thanks each

committee/commission

chairperson and treasurer for

their timely submission of data

and their cooperation in creating

a manageable 2017 church

budget.

Our current Associate Pastor

fundraiser has a monthly goal of

$1,400 a month. The fundraiser

will continue through December

2017. Achieving this goal will

finance the Associate Pastor’s

salary and benefits through June

2018. As of the end of

September 2016 our fundraiser

total was $537 below our goal.

Your continued support of this

fund is vital. If you are not

currently a regular donor of this

fund, please consider supporting

this ministry. The future of our

church depends, in a large part,

upon growing our youth and

young adult ministries, the main

focus of this position. Your

prayerful consideration to

supporting this effort is

requested.
