The Family That Plays Sikaran Together Stays Together By: Emmanuel es Querubin

Sikaran blood is the lifeline that assures the continued exis-tence of this 16th century original Filipino martial art. Sikaran expe-rience and tradition have been handed down from generation to generation. The family is the determining factor that has sus-tained the existence of Sikaran for over 500 years and hopefully will still do so in the next 500 years, and God-willing beyond. Filipinos in general are God-fearing and God-loving people. Filipinos believe in the Bible and what it teaches. Just as important, Filipinos believe in family and the importance of family life in their own personal growth. To the Filipino, family is everything and the most impor-tant in living. Everything that any member of the family does is for the good of the family. Every effort is exerted in order for this purpose not to be in anyway com-promised. The typical successful happy Filipino family life has a

loving, understanding woman in the center and a man that provides structure and stabil-ity. The children listen to the father’s instructions and do not forsake the mother’s teachings. It is natural for the son to follow in the footsteps of the father in relation to choosing a career. In the same token, it is natural for a daughter to follow the footsteps of the mother also in choosing a career. However, in choosing a sport, more often than not, the children select a sport that the father participates in. The family is the most fun-damental unit of society and of culture. The perpetual source of energy and assurance empowers all the members to strive to be the best that they can be. Blood is not the only link that makes a family. Loyalty and respect for each other keeps the family strong and this strength is the tradition that defines the family. George Bernard Shaw, said: “Perhaps the greatest social service that can be rendered by

anybody to this country and to mankind is to bring up a family.” I totally agree with him, but I will say the greatest social service that can be rendered by anybody is to bring up a happy family well versed in Sikaran. The teachings of the bible have given support, and nour-ished the Filipino families and their love for Sikaran has kept them together. This faith and love have nurtured the growth of Sikaran well into the present time. There are thousands of Fili-pino families engaged in Sikaran. Presented herein are just hand-fuls that have came forward to be counted. Foremost of these fami-lies is the Geronimo family. The Geronimo family is the only Sikaran Lineage that survived to the present and introduced to the international world of the mar-tial arts this truly Filipino Art of Fighting. Once a pastime activity of the proletariat, Sikaran is now a revered martial sport practiced all around the world.

Like his father, Meliton, Jr. started the study of Sikaran at an early age. His first teacher of course is his father. While growing up, he cross-trained with other martial arts that came his way.

Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo, Sr., has designated Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., his successor as the administrative head of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines when he finally retires. Junior (as he is called) is ready and well prepared to take on the job of leading tens of thousands of Sikaranistas around the world.

Jaime “Jimmy” C. Geronimo, is the second son of Cpriano Geronimo. Jimmy is the only Sikaran Master. His title was awarded him by the Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo. Master Jimmy is the Chief Instructor and Examiner of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. In his current position, he is next in line for the “grand mastership” of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. In April 2012, Jimmy Geronimo was the recipient of the “Sikaran Master of the Year Award” from the First Philippines Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

While growing up, Master Jimmy learned Sikaran from his father Cipriano Geronimo, Sikaran elders Melencio Bigasin, Manuel Ocampo, Aurelio Cabacob, Ange-les Pilapil, and Servillano Javier, and his brother Supremo Meliton Geronimo. Master Jimmy was award-ed his black belt in 1960. Soon after, he assisted Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo in teaching Si-karan at the Sikaran Brotherhood central gymnasium in Pasay City and the Baras Sikaran Club.

In order to complement his skill in unarmed combat for international competition, he took comparative studies with Japan’s Koichi Kondo, Korea’s Grandmasters Hwang Kee of Moo Doo Kwan Tang Soo Do and Grandmaster Kwai Byeung Yun of Ji Do Kwan Kong Soo Do. In the 1960’s he has competed in full contact tournaments with the use of protective armor and won several Gold Medals and Trophies. The climax of his compet-ing days using protec-tive armor was in 1968, when he was awarded the “Most Courageous Fighter Award” during the 5th Asian Karate Champion-ships in Seoul, Korea. Fighting under a different rule of no protec-tive armor during the First World Karate-do Champi-onships in Tokyo, Japan, in 1970, his bout in the

Team Championships ended with a draw. In the Individual champi-onships, he was outpointed by his taller and larger European oppo-nent. In 1969, after a selection process that included empty hand practitioners from Japan, Korea, and China, President

Ferdinand Marcos directed then Captain Meliton Geronimo, Grandmaster of the Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines to train the Presidential Security Command in the Filipino fighting art of Sikaran. Master Jimmy, then a 5th De-gree Black Belt was among those who were chosen for this exciting but sensitive position. After the graduation of the Presi-dential Security Command Si-

karan class, Master Jimmy was commis-sioned to provide covert security to a Philippine Air Force General and his fam-ily. He was later in-ducted in the Philip-pine National Police where he retired as a SWAT officer.

Andy Sanano was born in Legazpi City, in the Province of Albay. He learned the rudiments of stick fighting, from his grandfather and uncles who were the caretakers of their family art, the Labing-Tatlong Hampas system of Arnis de Mano. His adversary in training was the banana trees and the tall cogon grass while walking in the field. Little did he know that he was being prepared to someday take over their family art. When his father passed away relatives, adopted Andy in 1961 and the family moved to Manila. He joined the Sikaran class at the Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines gymnasium in Pasay City. His instruc-tors included Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo, Jimmy Geronimo, and Emmanuel Querubin. Andy’s insatiable appetite for the fighting arts led him to join the Pering Cruz Dojo where the curriculum included Karate, Judo, Jiu-jitsu, Aikido, and Arnis de Mano. After receiving his Black Belt in at the age of 18 his adopted parents brought him to San Francisco, California. While in San Francisco, Kempo was added to his martial arts repertoire. He joined the United States Air Force and was eventually stationed in Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, where he retired after 20 years. He also served for 16 years as a Reserve Lieutenant with the Rapid City (South Dakota) Police Depart-ment assigned to the Special Response Team (SRT), sometimes referred to as SWAT in other Police Agencies.

While in the service he continued his Sikaran training under Dante Alambra. Andy trained in all the martial arts that came his way, like Tae Kwon Do, Uechi-ryu Karate, Shotokan Karate, White Crane Kung-Fu, Aikido, and other weapon arts. He holds high-ranking Black Belt Degrees in several martial arts. To honor his family art, he consolidated all the systems he learned and formed the Sanano Martial Arts System (SMAS) with numerous affiliates all over the United States. His expertise in the martial arts won him several gold medals in competitions and tournaments. He was also honored in several Hall of Fames by different National and International Martial Arts organization. He was also one of the most sought after Martial Arts Instructor in various workshops and seminars. In 2010, Andy and other Filipino Martial Arts Teachers formed the Matawguro Association Filipino Martial Arts Education for Arnis de Mano, of which he is the International Coordinator. Also in 2010, the United Fellowship of Martial Artists, with headquarters in the East Coast, vested on Andy an Award of Excellence, for the Propagation and Development of the Filipino Martial Arts in the United States. In 2011, Andy Sanano co-authored with Louelle Lledo, the Teacher’s Training Handbook No. 1 entitled Fundamentals of Arnis de Mano, and The Teacher’s Training Handbook No. 2 entitled Fundamentals of Abecedario, and Handbook No. 3 entitled Prin-ciples of Classical Maneuvers. Elpidio Seletaria, Jr., by profession is a Senior Deputy Sheriff with the City and County of San Francisco Sheriff’s Depart-ment. He is a member of several Police Officers Fraternal Order. He helped formed the Filipino Ameri-can Law Enforcement Officers Association (FALEO). Graduating with a Law Degree from the MLQ University, he joined the military and saw ac-tion in Mindanao and other parts of the Philippines. He became a member of the famous (or infa-mous) military group known as “The Guardian.” He learned Sikaran from Florentino Pecate, Sr. in 1970, receiving his 1st Degree Black Belt in 1972, after passing the examination given by Grandmas-ter Meliton Geronimo himself. He later joined the SOS (Sons Of Stunts) Daredevils performing several stunts side by side with Lito Lapid (now a Senator). He is married to Mary Jane Presas, daughter of Remy Presas, Sr., the acknowledged Founder, and Grandmaster of Modern Arnis. His

son Carlomagno (now an aspir-ing actor in Hollywood) is a chip off the old block and is an excep-tional Sikaranista, Arnisador and stuntman. In 2005 elpidio Sele-taria, Jr. was promoted to the 7th Degree Black Belt. In 2011, he produced a Sikaran Train-ing DVD with the blessings of Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo. He was appointed International

Coordinator of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. In 2012 Elpidio Seletaria took the lead in upgrading and updating the Constitution and By-laws of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s approval of the updated and upgraded by-laws gave the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines another 50 years of corporate life.

Alex Sabater Bartolata, 7th Degree Black Belt (#2757) is a native of Baras, Rizal. While employed by Foremost Farms in Pinugay, Baras, he was intro-duced to Sikaran by a co-worker, who has since then left the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Phil-ippines. When the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines Headquarters relocated within a block from their home, Alex’ Sikaran training became more intense and progressive. His skill in Sikaran was further honed by senior instructors Allen Rio, Ruel Zuniga, Dante Amonelo, Gil Teodoro, Narciso Matignas, Nemencio Matignas, Rodrigo

Manalo and others. Among his instructors, he admired most Adonis Vallesteros who was very good in competition. His train-ing in the Headquarters led him to be an assistant instructor and later on a senior instructor. He had the opportunity to teach and train foreigners who found their way to the Headquarters. Among the hundreds of students he has trained, he said he likes most Emily Samillano because she was

hard working and very diligent in learning Sikaran. Erlina Bartolata, wife of Alex is an honorary black belt in Sikaran and a trusted and con-stant companion of Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo. Due to her active participation in Sikaran af-fairs she has met several officers and members from the different regions. Alex and Erlina have 3 sons whom they also nurtured in Sikaran. The eldest, Earickson

Bartolata is a 3rd Degree Black Belt and is at present a Sikaran instructor in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Her second son Edmon Bartolata although a black belt has put a temporary hold in his Sikaran training and is now concentrated in his studies. The youngest son Earvin Bartolata is learning Si-karan under the watchful eyes of Emily Samillano.

Earickson Bartolata, 3rd Degree Black Belt is an Instructor at the King Cobra Sikaran Club in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He Said: “ I was a warrior when I was

young and now that I am grown up, I am still a warrior.”

Allan Ocasla Villamor and Emily Zamora Samillano met in a Sikaran tournament held in Mandaluyong City. They both won the champion-ships in their divisions. Their love for Sikaran and for each other led them to raise a Sikaran family. Their daughter Aila, recently was a recipient of the Sikaran Scholarship Award. Their son Aeron said that he will follow the footsteps of his father, a Sikaran champion and Instructor.

In the City of Fresno, in Central California, is an exceptional family, the Lladone Family. What makes them exceptional is their dedication to Sikaran. The father, Ro-meo is a 5th Degree Black belt and her student-wife is now ready to take her black belt examination. Their first daugh-ter Ruby Grace, is now 8-years old and is now a Yellow Belt. They have twins, Reanne Gillian and Rainier Grant, who first took up Sikaran when they were only 2 years. They are now almost 5 years old and they continue to grow, not only in age but also in skill. Recently, the twins were awarded Most Outstanding Students in their school. This is not surprising, considering that the twins are always dead serious in what-ever they do, whether school work or Sikaran.

Moreno Villanueva started Sikaran training in the mid 1980’s, under Dennis Ante in a gym in Quezon City. He rose through the ranks until he became assistant instructor. He met Marion in the gym when she enrolled to take up Sikaran. In 1995, Marion received her black belt. They fell in love and got married in 1998.Thye are blessed with two very charming daughters. Michelle, now 13 years old is a Green Belt, while Maureen, 12 years old is an Orange Belt. One good thing about a Sikaran family is the chance to train to-gether, assuring them of quality time togetherness. Moreno and his family migrated to the United States in 2006 and settled in Bakersfield, California. In 2012, his wife Marion, who is a Nurse, was assigned in Roseville, a suburb of Sacramento, where they relo-cated. Although there are several martial arts school in Bakersfield, most of his students continued their Sikaran training in Fresno under Romeo Lladone.

Emmanuel del Espiritu Santo Querubin, is the third in the last direct link to the original Sikaran, the first two being Grand-master Meliton Geronimo and Master Jaime Geronimo. He learned Sikaran from Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo and the Sikaran el-ders led by Cipriano Geronimo, Melencio Bigasin, Manuel Ocampo, Aurelio Cabacob, Servillano Javier, and Angeles Pilapil. Always hungry for knowledge in the fighting arts Querubin, searched and learned various armed and unarmed systems such as Arnis de Mano, various styles of Karate, Judo, Kung Fu and others. He graduated with honors from the Feati Institute of Tech-nology and Francisco Law School. He continued his educational quest at the Laney College in Oakland, California, where he gradu-ated with honors with a Degree in Management and Supervision. He also took a course in Public Speaking from the Vista College in Berkeley, California. His educational pursuit includes Search and Rescue Training from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Training Academy, Powers of Arrest (Penal Code 832) from the Oakland Police Training Academy, First Responder Course from the American Red Cross Academy in Oakland, California and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) obtaining HAM Radio Operator License KJ6HJX.

There are thousand others who are passing on their Sikaran skill and experience to their offspring and other members of the family and community but they have not come forward to be counted. The first that comes to mind is Florentino Pecate, whose son Florentino, Jr. and nephew Candido Pecate have been constant winners in Sikaran tournaments. Another is Rodrigo Espiritu whose sons and daughter inherited his knowledge of Sikaran and are now actively teaching. Victor Laxamana and his son DonVic is also a Sikaran family. I am sure after this issue is off the press out of the wood works they will come and blame the editorial staff for their “exclusion.”

From The Desk of the Editor-At-Large Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. 9th Degree Red and White Belt WSBP Vice-President for International Affairs

He is the son of Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo and the third generation heir to the Geronimo Sikaran lineage. He came from the line of Sikaran haris. His Grandfather, Cipriano Geronimo was the last Hari of Baras, Rizal. His Great-grandfather Bonifacio Geronimo, was the last Hari ng mga Hari. Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo has issued a Legal Declaration, naming his son Administrative Head of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines, when he steps down as President.

I sat on my desk pondering what I will share with you in this issue. When I opened my email, staring at me was this email. This email embodies the principles of Sikaran; treat everybody with respect, always help when you can, always be considerate, and remember that every obstacle is an opportunity to succeed. Instead of writing something else I decid-ed to print this very thought-provoking email instead. I hope it will touch you as it did me.

Four lessons about the way we treat people

First Important Lesson – Cleaning Lady During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a con-scientious student And had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. “Absolutely, “ said the professor.. “In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant.. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say “hello..” I’ve never forgotten that lesson.. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American Woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway. Trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally un-heard of in those conflict-filled 1960’s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance, and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A Special note was attached. It read: “Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband’s’ bedside just before he passed away... God Bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.”

Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve. In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table.. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. “How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked. “Fifty cents,” replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. “Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.. “Thirty-five cents,” she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. “I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on The table and walked away The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two

nickels and five pennies.. You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

Fourth Important Lesson - The obstacle in Our Path. In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king’s’ wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables.. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand! Every obstacle presents an op-portunity to improve our condition.

Most importantly.... Live with no regrets, Treat people the way you want to be treated, Work like you don’t need the money, Love like you’ve never been hurt, and Dance like you do when nobody’s watching.

Important Projects for 2013The World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines is now finalizing plans for the Sikaran Teacher’s Training Academy, in conjunction with Province of Rizal Ordinance No. 002, s.2010, which reads:

Section 5. Creation of the Rizal Sikaran Training Center; Supervision of the Rizal Sikaran Training Cen-ter (RSTC); The RSTC as herein established shall be under the direct control and supervision of the Office of the Gov-ernor with a Center Director as head / chief of office, who shall be appointed by the Governor for a fixed term of three (3) years, unless sooner removed for just cause;

Section 6. Rizal Sikaran Training Board; The Board of the RSTC shall be composed of the Governor as Chairman and SIKARAN Federation President as Vice-Chairman and five (5) regular members to be appointed by the Governor which shall be composed of rep-resentatives from duly accredited SIKARAN Organizations in the Province of Rizal which possess reputable stand-ing and two (2) representatives from the academe; The RSTC Board shall serve as the policy making body of the center to be vested with the authority to formulate appropriate SIKARAN training programs and modules and perform such other activities, projects and functions that will best attain the objectives of this ordinance; The RSTC Board shall be responsible in the allocation, disbursement, management and disposition of the SIKARAN Development Fund hereinafter created consistent with existing auditing rules and regulations; The RSTC Board shall likwise be responsible for the accreditation, training and certification of SIKARAN trainers, instructors, coaches and referees in accordance with the guidelines it shall hereinafter formulate and shall perform such other functions as may be provided for by law or ordinance;”

In connection with the provisions of the RSTC, the WSBP is now in the final stages of publication of the official textbooks of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines Teacher’s Training Academy and the DVD of the Original Balangkas of Sikaran. The textbooks, authored by Master Jaime Geronimo, Man-tas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., and Mantas Emmanuel Querubin, are based on the teachings of Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo. The authors are all 9th Degree Red and White Belt. Jaime Geronimo is the Chief Instruc-tor and Examiner of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., is the Chief Executive Officer and Vice-President for International Affairs of the WSBP, while Emmanuel Querubin is the Executive Technical Assistant To Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo. Assisting them in this project are Mantas Elpidio Seletaria, WSBP International Coordinator and Mantas Danilo Chu, WSBP State Director for California State Chapter. The Official Textbooks will be composed of:

Book One - History of Sikaran; Filipino Terminologies; Stances and Postures; Blocks and Deflections; and Targets of Sikaran. Book Two - Weapons of Sikaran (Hand Techniques; Leg Techniques; Throws and Take-downs; Joints Re-versal; Submission Techniques; Other Forms o Attack; and Fighting Techniques. Book Three - Sikaran Tournament Rules and Regulations.

To be an accredited Sikaran Teacher and Sikaran Tournament Official, a practitioner must complete the WSBP Sikaran Teacher’s Academy and must pass the examination for such as prescribed by the By-laws of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines.
