The Project   The Fall is a multi-media theater performance that examines the world’s relationship to the moment of the fall of the Berlin Wall, as we approach its 25th anniversary on November 9th, 2014.

Page 3: The Fall

Origins of The Fall Inspired by Simón Adinia Hanukai’s childhood, growing up in Azerbaijan under communist rule, The

Fall was devised using international voices through real interviews and stories from those who relate to Communism, whether they lived through it or gazed at it from afar.

vvv

Words From the Director: The Fall investigates the hope for a unified world that was so alive when the Berlin Wall came down. The Fall also juxtaposes that hope with the current wall-building frenzy of nation-states and private communities. Instead of solely looking at the effect that the event had on Germany, I am interested in the way the fall impacted the rest of the world, and particularly the communist countries of the time. As we approach the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall we are once again surrounded by social unrest. From the uprisings of Tunisia to Ukraine, from Thailand to Greece, from Egypt to Bosnia-Herzegovina, the discontent is amassing. For many, the promises of freedom and unity that resounded at the end of the Cold War did not come to fruition. For some, the world is more divided and walled apart than ever.

Voices from countries reflected in the development of The Fall thus far:

Azerbaijan Bosnia- Herzegovina Canada

Cuba France Germany Hungary

Korea Mexico Poland Romania

Russia Slovenia USA

The Story Through word, movement and video, the

piece weaves together three interdependent narratives: a young

Romanian man and his newborn daughter on a 25-year journey into the once

forbidden West after the bloody regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu is swept away with the

fall of the Iron Curtain; a pair of construction workers dispatched to slice

up the world with a multitude of new walls; and fantastical administrators, the masterminds behind this caustic quest of

brick and mortar.

vvv

The story takes us on a journey from the once blaring promise of “freedom”,

sounded by the West in 1989, to the ever more divided world of today.

Community Events: "Teaching Young Artists

Through an education partnership funded by Theatre That Transcends, Simón has been teaching an 8-month residency at the Gotham Arts Academy, a public high school in Bedford-Stuyvesant. ""

Inspired by the local and global divide created by the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain, the collaboration with the students narrows in on the personal and societal walls that young adults and individuals face in their own Bed-Stuy community. " "

The students, prompted by personal narratives of peers as well as their own experiences, use improvisation, composition and writing exercises to generate performance material. The residency will culminate with an original piece performed by the youth in May 2014.
