PHILIPPINE NORMAL UNIVERSITY HOLDS THE INTERNATIONAL NEUROELT CONFERENCE (cont.)
By: Baring, Cariño, Gacosta, Gaddi, Golifardo & Ligot
According to iTEC Corporation, this conference aims to: provide opportunities for teachers to learn about the emerging field of
NeuroELT and how it can be used in the classroom; recognize the complexity of learning; and educate and help people avoid pseudoscientific “neuromyths” and
inspire them to apply innovative and neuroscience-based methods in their teaching.
Five professional speakers from various parts of the world like Japan and London share their
knowledge on their field of expertise: Mr. Marc Helgesen, Chair of the Extensive Reading Foundation and Founder of FAB Brain Science in
Language Teaching: NeuroELT; Prof. Curtis Kelly, Ed.D, Cambrige and National
Geographic author; Prof. Robert Murphy, University of Kitakyushu and University of
Birmingham professor; Dr. Robert Shaules, intercultural educator and consultant in Japan,
Mexico, and Europe; and Ai Murphy, officer in the Japan Association for Language
Teaching (JALT) Mind, Brain & Education Special Interest Group.
The International TESOL Education Consultancy Corporation (ITEC), in
cooperation with Faculty of Arts and Languages (FAL) professors and The English Club (TEC) officers work hand in hand in reserving and assigning the different venues of the seminar proper and concurrent sessions.
"Professor Alido and Professor Papango asked for the permission of Professor Tuga, in
cooperation with Prof. Minerva Atanacio-Brilliante, for the approval of the venues needed for the seminar," said Ernest Tenorio, VP for External Affairs, TEC. “We were asked to prepare only three days before the event,” he added.
The invited speakers managed the three-day conference composed of plenary and concurrent
sessions, book talks, as well as general ELT forum featuring papers on ELT topics, and neuroscience
education books where educators openly interact with the students. Professor Anne Camit, Miss Tin Mendoza, Mr. Jay Acacio, Professor Noel Yu, Professor Carole Diamante, Dr. Arlene Opina, and Miss
Catherine Ann Diy Ambat facilitated the book talk sessions were. “It is very useful and inspiring to get useful ideas to equip as personality as a teacher to make
students want to learn rather than being forced to learn,” answered Jose Antonio Sarmento, English
teacher, Timor Leste when asked what makes this conference more exceptional. "First, it helped students, especially English and Language students, in their journey as a future teacher
and at the same time, the certificate will help them in their job, especially promotions," said Earnest Dave Tenorio, Vice President External of The English Club.

PNU receives a fresh room makeover; students await comfort rooms’
renewal By: Arañas, Antonio & Sevilla
Philippine Normal University (PNU) grabs P500, 000
worth of Freshroom Makeover as it outnumbered four other
universities in collecting empty packs of Carefree variants in
the Carefree Freshroom Competition on Monday, January 12.
Girl power proves to be more dominant in PNU, the
only state university to lead over four other private institutions
in the competition: Arellano University, Manuel L. Quezon
University, National University and San Beda College.
Inclusive of the makeover is the renovation of female comfort
rooms: changing the tiles as well as cleaning, painting, and
fixing broken toilet bowls, mirrors, bathroom sinks, and
doors.
“’Yung CED [College of Education] kasi ‘yung
Socio-Cultural Committee Chairperson Zainorah Odzong. Odzong stressed that if the money for the
makeover is not fully spent, it can also be used for the comfort rooms in other school buildings. “Bukod sa
CED, kung ‘di naman mauubos ‘yung pera sa makeover dun, balak ng SG na gawin din ‘yung CR sa
Student Veranda tsaka sa Normal Hall.”
Odzong shared the positive sentiment of other PNUANS when they knew that the school won the
competition, “Malaking tulong sa CR natin ‘yun; na may pagkukusa ang Student Government na
magkaroon ng ganitong project. Hinihintay na lang namin na ang admin ang mag take ng part nila ng sa
ganoon, mas maayos. She also avers that the makeover will be really helpful for the students. ”Siyempre
estudyante kailangan maayos tayo.”
Despite winning the promo’s hygienic comfort room package, many PNUANS observed the lack
of water supply in the university as a hindrance to achieve the goal of the makeover. ”Nakakalungkot kasi kailangan pa nating sumali sa ganoon (Carefree Competition) para lang mapaayos ‘yung CR ng PNU.
Bakit wala ba tayong sariling pera? Sana isinasaalang-alang ng mga nasa taas ‘yung ganito tulad ng hygiene ng mga estudyante.” Elmer F. San Jose, an English major stated. Other than the renovation of the
comfort room in CED and the supposed improvement of CRs in the Student Veranda and Normal Hall, there are still six female CRs in three other buildings of the school in need of repairs: two in the Main Building; three in the Bonifacio P. Sibayan (BPS) Hall; and one in the gymnasium. According to the
Office of the Facility Management and Sustainability Services (OFMSS), these comfort rooms have the same problems as almost all of the cubicles’ doors have no lock, the toilet bowls have no flush and there is
no stable water supply. Meanwhile, all the comfort rooms in the BPS hall have lost its water supply since November 2014.
“Nasira kasi ‘yung pinakamotor ng tubig, pero sinisimulan ng ayusin ‘yung motor ng tubig na malapit sa
gym”, says Eliud Noriega, a PHILCARE maintenance employee. The water supply in BPS hall’s comfort rooms just recently returned yesterday, January 21.

To vote or not to vote? That is the question. What are your reasons for voting? Do you vote to
exercise your right or just for the heck of it? It is noticeable that the number of voters have significantly decreased in the past year and the only reason we see for this deterioration is the students’ lack of
interest on the matter. In spite of the COMELEC’s extensive efforts to get the student body to actively participate in the
elections and do their part in voting, the number of voters highly deteriorated compared to last year’s
elections. According to Justine Huliganga, Head of Board of Canvassers, the percentage of voters’
turnout this year is 10% lower than last year’s 52%.
One of the reasons of this dramatic decline is the campaign strategies of each party. They were not able to capture the interest of the students through their campaign strategies. It is important that
each PNUan knows the candidates and their platforms. In this year’s case, both parties were not able to campaign in each class. It is not enough they have their leaflets, banners, and other campaign materials spread all over the school. They have to establish rapport with the students and leave a mark for
themselves; let students know that they have power, authority, and strength in speaking in front; and prove that they are worthy of the votes and the positions they are running for. Partylists should work on
their schedule to have their campaign on all sections. Their exposure to the student body is a very important factor to promote their self and their partylist.
Second, the platforms that they raised are not always fulfilled. One of the reasons why students vote is they look forward to the things that the candidates can do for them. Building their credibility is their purpose for campaigning. It will only reflect if they will be able to achieve their platforms. If
elected officers are not able to stand by their words, voters will no longer believe in their credibility. This will cause them to lose their interest to vote for the next election.
In addition, students think that platforms of the candidates, or the whole party, are not student-centered. They are too focused on the budget and the problems of the whole country, not realizing that
students’ needs are being set aside and neglected. Issues on budget cut should be acknowledged but should not really be the center of all future plans.
It’s time for a change.
Although their efforts were noticeable it just happen that these are not enough. They should think of new and innovative strategies instead of recycling and using old tactics. They should also create
objectives that are more tangible instead of making big promises with no results.

We ended with no closure,
We ended, that was it.
We ended, I didn’t notice.
We ended, you just quit.
I forgot what we had.
I forgot, did I really?
I forgot what it meant.
I forgot you ineffectively.
You never made a move.
You never gave me signs.
You never showed you cared.
You never were even mine.
Time helped the wound to heal.
Time, what have you done?
Time did not do anything.
Time, you lost. I won.
I still remember everything.
I still love him as before.
I still want him to be around me.
I still feel the way my heart tore.
You tell me things I want to hear.
You show me otherwise.
You make me hang on and never let go.
You feed me words with lies.
We ended, that was for the best.
We ended quick and fast.
We ended but you’re still here.
We ended but the memories last.

HOW LIFE IS By: A.B.C.
To realize that everything is temporary Is such a hit on reality.
To realize that everything is fleeting, Brings about strong feelings.
Feelings of wanting to make things last
Because time goes so fast.
Feelings of wonder Of how much more life could be. How long do we still have?
One month? One year? The answer we’ll never know,
What’s certain is that life is short.

Questions By: Jamie S. Golifardo
I often find myself
Staring at the blankness Wondering why you even care
Cannot fathom why you're there I look at myself in the mirror Seeing every scar made by the past
And I ask, would your love still last? My life has not been good
For me to even dream so high But when I look at your eyes,
And they speak of so much love I cannot tell myself to deny That these questions are nothing
For you I'll stop asking For you I'll start trusting
Even if I know I don't deserve anything.
Evanesce (reply to
sonnet 18) By: Jamie S. Golifardo
Beauty fadeth just as memories drift:
It lasts some time and fades most of the time, Comparing beauty to a summer's gift:
Physical and inner beauty chime: How lovely it is to be known by you, How fair it is to be compared to sun:
It shines and glows but also makes me blue, Whispering soft sounds and I want to run
The face that you see, the hair that you touch, They are all only lovesome while they last:
I'm afraid what you expect is too much, Are you only looking to what can pass?
As long as you love this beauty of mine, I'd allow myself to be only thine.
The Truth By: Rod Daniel Antonio
When Life gives me a hard time You are here to stay on my side
Human imperfections forces us to swallow our pride For beauty lies inside
No matter where I go or what i do
I always think of you Flowers Bloom when you give me a clue We can make a garden out of the blue
Look at me, Look at us
Let's destroy the barrier that keeps us apart Fill my empty heart
and you'll be my brand new start.. Once a nobody but you made me a somebody
I wish I could thank you enough someday Sad to say I'm not here to stay
If Only I could turn back time even if I have to pay Forever is the word that will make my day.

In Thy Sweet Love By: January Hannah Arañas
I succumb to emptiness dreadfully,
Tears drop down like pearls on barren earth, Shame, remorse, and guilt are my enemy, A lonely creature I was, who seek rebirth.
O, I long for sweet laughter, for rejoice,
To be clothed in ruby, ivory, and gold, Fame and fortune, by any other man’s choice,
I yearn for glory, a treasure to hold.
Yet whilst a dream of worldly merriment,
I see the dawn in thee, a blissful sight, With haste, I cast away my resentment,
And sing the melody throughout the night.
For this sheer loneliness I do now scorn, In thy sweet love, I am now reborn.

I close the lights, remove the covers And crawl into my bed.
I close my eyes, no silence comes, But thoughts rush in instead.
I think of where I am today, And see that nothing’s changed.
I think of where I’ll be tomorrow, And fear things’d remain unchanged.
I think of how people my age are Far more successful than I.
I think of how I’m such a failure, I wonder so many times, why?
I think of where I’d rather be, In countries far from here.
I think of who I wanna be, A person who feels no fear.
These are the thoughts that fill my mind When I go to bed at night. I want to shout, “Dear head, keep quiet!”
And go to sleep I might.

As I succumb to the world’s whims,
I lie alone suffering. With no one to heed, even heavens up above
Of my misery– my subdued life. All the jewels and the glorious kings, I greatly envy.
In this dark realm, I curse my state with all the villainy and treachery. Yet as this gloomy night comes to pass,
I see the dawn in thine eyes. Happily, I cast away my doubts
For life is like a feather in the sky— Flying so carefree, fleeting– as I see the beauty in thee.

Eloquencia Perfecta: Eloquent’s Finest Studes (English majors edition)
By: Ligot, Baring, Arañas, & Sevilla
Philippine Normal University thrives with the perseverance and hard work of PNUANs, or
teachers-to-be to embody quality education in our country. Nonetheless, there is a fine line which
separates various kinds of students: from those who don’t know what is happening; who know what is
happening; and the ones who make things happen. The search for Eloquent’s finest had been far and
wide as we searched for the most productive role-models in various majorships. Yet as we listened to
several interviews and painstakingly took notes of their answers, we narrowed down our quest to one of
the most complicated majors in the university: the English majors. With their “eloquence” in using the
language of command and responsibility, they left marks in the university, which earned the respect of
the student body (be it in academic fields such as research, or even in socializing with different people).
And in their participation in the recent Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges
(PASUC), they are highly regarded as one of the different facets of a leader in PNU. These four
embodies a true leader in the field of education: a heart full of love, boldness, simplicity, beauty, and
brains.
Alvin: It all blossoms from love
In an interview with Alvin Rey M. Caña, he shared his life as a president of the PNU English
club and where all his strength in serving comes from.
Alvin shared his goals as the president of TEC and
one of these goals is making sure that the English majors
are happy. He wanted them to know that they have the
right to comment on what the officers do and how they
are doing it. When asked what motivates him to continue
being president, he simply answered that it was his love
for what he was doing and for his co-officers that kept
him going. It is never easy to be president of an
organization as big as The English Club. Alvin admitted
to sometimes losing patience, but after all the hysterics
die down, he will calmly approach the people involved
and solve the problem.
Alvin really has the characteristics of a good leader. He is a living proof that leaders should
not only be smart but also humble, patient, and responsible. Wrapping up the interview, he left us
with this, “if you want to be a part of something, you’ll need to learn how to love it and the people
involves in it. There is no perfect organization. If it’s perfect, it is definitely imperfect. Loving the
English club is like loving someone. It’s a process and time really matters. If you love what you are
doing, everything follows.”

Ernest: Simplicity at its finest
Ernest Dave Tenorio literally has his hands full
as The English Club’s soft-spoken and down-to-earth
Vice President for Internal Affairs (VPI) earns his spot
in the “E-loquent’s Finest” with a vision of his own.
They say that leaders are both born and made for at a
very young age, Ernest already employs a unique
charisma that gets his team up and running, even in
simple classroom tasks. As his teachers would lay their
eyes in this seemingly timid young man, they envision a
lot more: “I’ve been eyeing on you and I can say you will be
a good leader”, his elementary teacher proclaims. With a
huge responsibility in guiding the English majors in
both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, he
stretches his arms wide enough to help the officers with
their tasks. “I am not just the VPI because all of us in TEC
[The English Club] are multi-taskers so our duty goes beyond
the written duties of our position” Ernest claims.
Yet every leader has some hurdles to trudge as he has to face different views, and to some
extent, complaints in some of their activities. “There is also an incident wherein we, the TEC officers, as far
as I know, commited a mistake. We set some rules but it was not followed and I think it is our fault but the other
officers didn’t accept it. Anyway in the end, we were able to fix the problem and we were able to understand each
other”, he affirms. With a humble disposition, you wouldn’t expect that a simple person as Ernest is
would play a huge role as a leader. Indeed, true looks can be deceiving.
Patty: Dare to be different
With the biggest dreams and aspirations, Ms. Patriluz
C. Manongsong reaches far and wide beyond what any
student can imagine. Fondly known as “Patty” by her
classmates and friends, this young lady dares to be different
in Philippine Normal University (PNU) as well as an
accomplished English major and public speaker. At 21, she
already studied in Bennet College, USA and toured various
countries as scholar of the Global-Undergraduate Exchange
Program by Philippine-American Educational Foundation
(PAEF). She accepts the challenge as the president of PNU-
debate society, venturing on various tournaments. And
recently, she becomes the university’s pride, taking home 1st
place in the Philippine Association of State Universities and
Colleges (PASUC) Extemporaneous speaking competition.

Patty outshines every student in having the most productive life in PNU; a life filled with
passion and opportunities. The eldest of five in her family, she was raised in a very supportive
environment with remarkable independence. “Very open ang communication naming sa isa’t isa.
My parents were literally my first teachers.” She recalls. Unknown to many people, she also lived
with self-doubt. “Be willing to learn. Be ready to learn (because you will really learn). Be willing to
try. Be ready to try (because you will really have to try). It’s difficult, yes—but learning comes when
you dream, when you try, and when you fail once in a while.” She claims.
Koreen: PNU’s girl next door
Koreen Anne Villaverde proves to be that a
winning face should also be paired with wit and good
heart. As one of the students of the honors class, Koreen
is a genuine achiever not just of good looks but also of
good brains. When asked for the meaning of beauty for
her, she confidently answered that it is not physical and
that real beauty is what the eyes cannot see. If she proves
to people that she is not just the typical pretty face, she
averred positively and added that joining pageants is her
way to prove to people that she also has something to say
aside from her face that speaks immediately for her. In
joining pageants, she bagged the title from most of them.
Even surrounded by glory as she receives titles and
honors, she keeps her foot on the ground stressing there
was not a single change that happened; that she was the
Koreen who still had not have the laurels that she have
today. She is, as she described herself, a simple girl and a
good friend. A good teacher herself will become, she
noted, once she treads her way through real life.
The use of Language in empowering the society liberates the minds of any student. These four
leaders serve as a jigsaw puzzle to a wider scope of what PNUANS can offer in the society. As we
continue our search for our next “Eloquent’s finest”, we proudly uplift the morals of our institution
through the capabilities of the pre-service teachers. For in this edition, the “big” four enlivens their
faculty’s motto: “In language we lead, in the arts we live”.

The Three Faces of Arts: PNU’s finest performance
By: Rod Daniel Antonio & January Hannah Arañas
An astounding array of precious talents with overpowering passion for the arts is shown in the
Philippine Normal University’s Celebration of National Arts Month. The limelight focused on the
sparkle of performance by three of the best artistic groups in PNU as they render, The PNU Kislap
Sining Dance Troupe’s “Sayaw” The Elements of Life in Dance, PNU Chorale’s Musicooltura, and
PNU Rondalia, Ethnic and Angklung Ensemble’s Musika’t Pagkakaisa. As PNUANs showcase a
variety of talents, they rejuvenate the university’s fashion and passion for arts as an essential factor in
valuing one’s life: the colors, music, and rhythmic movements as the voice of revelry, culture, and
identity.
PNU Chorale: The trembling voice of Filipino glory
On the afternoon of February 23, every
student, professor, and music lover eagerly took their
seats at the PNU Quadrangle to listen as PNU
Chorale lent their soothing voice in different
variations. At the signal of Prof. Luzviminda Modelo,
the singers made the earth tremble starting the
program with Ama Namin to invocate the spirits of the
spectators. From the highest tone of sopranos, to the
deep setting of the bass singers, one could feel the
harmony in every note they sing. In a melodious
triumph, they covered various OPM hits, traditional
church hymns, and Folk songs, in lieu to the nationalistic theme of Filipino arts. “As we climb up the
stage to perform, I feel honored in using our own voices to communicate with the Filipino soul. Nakakaoverwhelm
yung feeling na hanggang ngayon tinatangkilik pa rin ng mga kabataan ang awiting Filipino.” James Reyes, a
PNU chorale member exclaimed. Every performer deemed themselves as virtuosos of the night
supplemented by the audience’s warm applause.
PNU Rondalla: An exemplary performance of traditional instruments
Native music that will surely bring your soul to the sweetest tunes of a promising paradise;
the harmonious music by PNU Rondalia, Ethnic
and Angklung Ensemble led by Prof. Pacita Narzo
resounded in the PNU Quadrangle on February
27, 2015. Different tunes of various cultures and
traditions all over the Philippines assembled to
deliver a satiating performance. Each musical
arrangement is carefully studied and authentically
presented by its members as to give justice to
artistic craft. The audience felt like they are in
high heavens as they soar with the ascending and
descending melodious tones.

Kislap Sining Dance Troupe: A Rhythmic movement of tradition
Grace and glamour anchored with
drama, rhythm, and artistic movements; a
dance full of life. As they step and tap their
feet on the floor of the stage, you would feel
the mixture of ethnic and contemporary style
of dance in the Philippines. PNU Kislap
Sining Dance Troupe headed by Dr. Larry
Gabao has established this identity for more
than two decades. They continue to set the
legacy by bringing the torch up above the far-
reaching skies of tremendous success. For the
special celebration of arts month, the group
performed simultaneously with Philippine
State College of Aeronautics’ Sining Himpapawid Dance Troupe and St. Paul College of Paranaque’s
Pas des Tous on February 20. The combined magical presentations are endowed with superb dance
routines and stunts that left the audience longing for more. “When I move my body, I make sure that it
conveys a certain message for the people. I communicate through movements and express myself through the
heartfelt performances I render for the people who continue to live with the Arts” Mar Trabuco, PNU Kislap
Sining Dance Troupe, President testified. Indeed, the secret to a great performance rests upon the
earnest desire of a performer to share his talent to the world.
The arts truly come with various forms, from the intricate movements of dancers, the
rhythmic beating of the drums, and the soothing tune of one’s voice. As PNU celebrates National
Arts Month, every PNUAN and professor remembers the value of what arts can give the society: the
value of life, and living it with the beauty of self-expression and freedom. The colors and beauty of
how art is valued continuously thrive as educators see its importance, an art to keep, and an art to
live.
One of the PNU chorale members, Edward Cortez said “I feel proud of being a Filipino whenever
I see PNU Rondalia perform. I am inspired by their passion for the arts. Like them, I want to live a life which
centers on music.” Truly, a musical group of our own that could speak for our nation in the Global
scene and beyond.

Ferdinand Pisigan Jarin, the author of the outstanding Anim na Sabado ng Beyblade and a
National Book Awardee, once again wrote a simple yet very meaningful book for children of today’s
generation, Si Kaitlin at ang Game Machine. The illustrations of the book were made by the artistic
hands of Manix Abrera, along with his other work Kiko Machine. Si Kaitlin at ang Game Machine
discusses about how gadgets and internet games influence Kaitlin’s life as a child. It is important that
the story itself is easy to understand; thus making it really appropriate for children.
The title itself is very simple yet it made me wonder if the game machine is like the monsters
in other stories and movies where children who disobey their parents are being eaten or placed inside
the machine to learn their lesson. But it turned out that the game machine in Jarin’s book is not the
stereotypical one. In the middle of the story, I found out that the game machine here is not a monster.
It was just made to bring Kaitlin to a world where children value the importance and joy of playing
with other children instead of internet games. It is very good to know that this book does not give
readers cliché topic and characters.
Another element that should be acknowledged is the plot. At the beginning, it gives the
readers descriptions of the sounds and actions of what Kaitlin is doing with her tablet. Onomatopoeia
is a very good strategy to capture the attention of the readers. It gives life to the thing that is being
described. When readers read the sounds, it is as if they are a part of the story. This gives way to the
success of the readers to interact with the book. It is also important that the plot includes the kinds of
games that Kaitlin plays. Some readers can find connections with these games. I think it is good to
know that the readers can relate to what the book is trying to convey. The descriptions of Kaitlin’s
reaction while playing these games are also effective. While reading, I felt how excited and intense
Kaitlin is whenever she starts playing with her tablet.

I also liked how Kaitlin is described in the story. She is the representation of the children who
are born in a very advanced society. The story is very timely because a lot of children today prefer to
just play with their tablets and computers instead of building friendship with other kids of their age.
Kaitlin is so obsessed with her computer games to the point that she becomes tired and weary
although she is just sitting on her bed. It is also important to know that Kaitlin realizes the
significance of playing with other children. It reminds the readers that interacting and socializing with
other people should be prioritized because it will not only help us to build good relationship to them
but also it will teach us lessons that we will not know on our own.
More than the story, the illustrations of the
scenes and characters also add up to the success of
the book. The descriptions in words fit the pictures
and designs. The pictures are not too detailed but
just enough to give visual representations of the
characters and events. The colors are also very
refreshing yet attention-catching. They are not too
bright that can make the pictures loud but they are
just in their right shades. There are instances that
children only look in the pictures of the book that’s
why I believe that the illustrations alone should
already tell the story. And I think Manix Abrera
really made a good job in doing the illustrations
because they complement the story of Jarin.
Above all, there are many factors that a
writer considers before he/she can produce a story
that is appropriate for kids. More than anything,
children’s books should really be properly written
and designed as they can influence and affect the
views of children. Si Kaitlin at ang Game Machine
is an appropriate book for children who have lost
value on building friendship with other kids. It should be read by all kids to remind them that playing
with other children can teach them many lessons in life that computer games won’t be able to give
them.

TEACH WITH STYLE! (A fashion guide for future teachers)
By: Jean Claudine G. Vicencio
Have you ever had a teacher in your life that became your favorite and you are very eager to
attend their class because he/she always comes to class well dressed? Or a teacher who comes to class
very shabby that every time you are in his/her class all you do is look at your watch wishing it’s
already dismissal time? Well, it is undeniable that a teacher’s physical appearance makes good impact
on students. Going to class well dressed up will help you obtain the respect and credibility necessary
from students and parents as well as colleagues in work. Students will tend to model the behavior and
appearance they see in the classroom. An effective teacher will dress appropriately as a professional
educator to model success. Your respect in the classroom begins with your appearance and you
should strive to be a positive role model for each student.
Most of the schools and universities provide uniforms for teachers but who says teachers can’t
look exceptionally good in uniform? He/she could actually spice up the everyday uniform by wearing
stylish accessories like a statement watch or necklace. Always make sure that your hair is neat and
stylish. Teachers are advised to wear makeup as well but it should always be subtle, just to add color
in the face and emphasize your features.
Teachers should dress presentably every day of the week, unless a stated dress code policy
allows you to dress casually on a given day. There is usually a day or two, most likely every Friday
that is given for them to have the chance to have a day-off from the usual uniform. Teachers should
always wear something wholesome and professional-looking outfit inside the school. Avoid wearing
too fitted clothes and skirts or dresses, which lengths are above the knee. Also, who says teachers
should always wear those boring dark or neutral color clothes? Ditch those, and start buying fun
clothes! Here are some outfit inspirations perfect for teachers.

Oh, Pag-ibig! Paano ba makalimot? (Advice Column by Gabriella Bianca Ivanah T. Gaddi)
I’ve been receiving an extra amount of calls and tweets lately from people who can’t move on.
Some from a bad relationship, an almost relationship, a friendzoned relationship, or even a one-sided,
unreciprocated relationship. So here I have written a little something for you guys to hopefully help
you move on with your life and start anew.
Dearest Friend,
You’re young, beautiful, smart, and funny. John Doe is an idiot for leaving you. I’d tell you to
move on, but we both know you aren’t going to do that. You’re going to stalk his Facebook for
months after your break up, check his Twitter every single minute to see what he’s doing, look at his
instagram to find pictures of him with his new girl. You do all this while you silently wonder what
went wrong. Why did he leave you? Weren’t you enough? Wasn’t he happy with you? He won your
heart by saying the sweetest things and giving you gifts that made your heart flutter and gave you
butterflies in your stomach. But now he’s gone, you’re left feeling like your heart has been ran over,
stabbed by a serrated knife, and is now nothing but a deflated balloon and the butterflies have now
been burned by the acid in your stomach that comes from the nights you skipped dinner to cry alone
and mope in your bedroom. Your eye-bags so heavy from nights you spent mulling over the moments
you had together; your firsts, your adventures, your laughs, your fights, your rebellions, your love,
which you thought, would last forever. I understand why moving on would be rather difficult.
But love is tricky and it blinds you to things you refuse to see. He says he loves you but you
catch him texting with other girls. He says he cares but he doesn’t visit you when you’re sick. You try
meeting up but he keeps coming up with so many excuses. If he really wanted to see you, he’d find a
way. You tell me he was thoughtful but he always forgets your monthsary. He says he adores you, but
he publicly ogles others, even in your presence. He says he respects you but doesn’t come on time
when you have a date. He calls you sweet nothings like “bae”, or “beh,” but he also calls other girls
“beh.” He is goodlooking, but I’m sure you can always find someone better, because looks aren’t
everything. He isn’t even that smart. You tell me that you’ve been together for so long, but you know
what? You know how to count. Then that means you can begin with 1 again, with someone better
and more deserving.
It hurts me to see you this way. I watch as you slither into a sad and desolate world right before
my eyes because of your inability to move on and let go of the past. It’s like clinging onto a rose as it
dies, as the thorns dig deep into your hand, wounding you, you continue to hold on, showering it with
tears, hoping it lives again. You’ve lost so much weight because you keep skipping meals, your
appetite gone like the light that used shine brightly in your eyes. Your hair, usually long and kept tidy,
now nothing but a bird’s nest bunched at the top of your head in the messiest bun in the whole world.

You’re pale, lacking the luster that used to be your greatest asset. You used to glow even
when people tried to dull your sparkle, because nothing could get you down. You used to be so
positive, your optimism always rubbing off on me, keeping me up when all I wanted to do was
crumble when I had problems of my own. Your smile was so bright it could have lit up a star that
would shine brighter than our sun. You were always on an all time high, flying higher than hot air
balloons on a warm summer day, pulling people up with you as much as you can. But now you’re
crumbling, your grades continually deteriorating. The teachers are noticing that you’re always late,
you’re failing exams, and you don’t pass requirements on time, if at all. Graduation isn’t long from
now, and I couldn’t imagine graduating without you. We’ve gone through so much together and I
won’t let John Doe dare get in the way of keeping you from being who you really are. I’m your friend.
I won’t let that happen.
You have to move on. I’ll help you. First of all, you have to stop stalking him. Unfriend him.
Unfollow him. Don’t think that this is a sign of weakness, because only the wise can say they were
strong enough to remove something that was weighing them down even if they didn’t want to. By
doing so, you’d avoid being reminded of him every time you log onto your social networking sites.
You can finally stop stalking him. Stop listening to songs that remind you of him, and dwelling on
memories of the things you’ve done. They’re in the past for a reason. Look forward. Stop letting
yourself get rundown because of him, like not eating or staying at home all the time. Socialize. Call up
your friends. We’re always here for you, ready to help in any way we can. Stop being a hermit and get
out of your room. Reconnect with your family. Also, stop blaming yourself. There are some things in
life that weren’t meant to last, and your relationship with him is obviously one of those. It doesn’t
necessarily mean it’s your fault. It just means it was not meant to be. Learn to forgive, even if it would
be extremely difficult to forget. Open yourself to new experiences.
Letting go opens you up to new possibilities. Letting go can bring out a better you. Once you
learn from your mistakes, you become a stronger person. Let the tears clear your eyes to see the
beauty of the world, instead of when you kept your eyes closed to the world’s wonders to dwell on
something that was out of your control. Moving on isn’t easy, but once you do, it can be so refreshing.
Imagine swimming towards the shore for so long with an anchor strapped to your ankle, the waves
relentlessly crashing onto to you. Moving on is like finding the key to remove that anchor and finally
arriving at the shore, breathing a gasp of fresh air and relief. You’d look at the world with new eyes,
and you’ll learn to appreciate even the smallest things. Who knows, maybe even find a better and
longer lasting relationship.

So dear friend, you may think that all hope is lost and that the end of your relationship is the
end of your happy days. But let me tell you, you have never been more wrong. The end of your
relationship is but a beginning for the dawn of a new and better you. You’re young, you have so much
ahead of you and life can only get better once you’ve experienced the worst. Moving on isn’t going to
be easy. It’s going to be hard, and it’s going to take some time and a lot of pain. But in the end, you’ll
only find that, like a diamond, you have to go through a lot of heat and pressure before coming out
shiny, brand new, and stronger.
Yours truly,
Echoserang Hugotera

My kind of character… “A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.”- Neil Gaiman
As we indulge ourselves in different kinds of finery by today’s standards (i.e. watching a
movie; going to a spa; enjoying the rides in a carnival, etc.), we see life that gleams like a gem: we
surely don’t want to lose it. However, there is more to life than experiencing all of these, and that is
reading a good book. As teachers to be, we are given one heck of a responsibility, and that is to
inspire our students to learn. What better way to show the wonders of learning, than to flip the pages
of a good book and feel its crispy sound; and utter each word printed? As good teachers are good
readers, we imbue the gift of imagination and the ability to think outside of the box to our students.
And what a fine lesson one could get as each share his or her favourite character that they adore and
value? Thus, we asked the “Eloquent” staffers to share a thing or two about their personal favourites.
Ranging from the classical princesses, mysterious personas, heart throbs, and brave heroes, they sure
catch any reader’s attention and give them the very reason why they should be emulated.
Katniss Everdeen: Girl on Fire
Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games” trilogy embodies a
woman strong enough to make a change. Known as the “Girl on
fire”, she sure knows how to spark the people’s desire for freedom
in a dystopian and destructive future amidst the rule of the Capitol.
As a victim in her own right, she lost her father at an early age over
a war which disintegrated District 13 and majority of her people.
She had no choice but enter the sadistic “Hunger games” herself to
save her sister, and reclaim her role as the sole protector of her
family. Katniss upholds the ideals of women empowerment for
surviving the sadistic game which tremendously alarmed the
Capitol. Her strength and cunningness made her instrumental for
acquiring peace and tranquillity throughout “The Hunger Games”
trilogy. Yet, her tender heartedness as a woman gave room for her
personal desires that made her human: her affection towards Peeta
Mellark. Katniss Everdeen’s character can truly capture one’s enjoyment in reading as she sets
“fire” in one’s spirits and adventures. –January Hannah Arañas, Editor-in-Chief/Illustrator

JAMIE SULLIVAN: The greatest gift from a plain box
Jamie Sullivan is a very simple girl with pure heart. She may
seem to be unattractive to others who view beauty as
something extravagant. But I must say that real beauty
definitely lies inside. Her selfless character and depth
outpours an aura that is so angelic; a real blessing. She does
not teach Landon life lessons, but she continues to believe
that there is a good person hidden inside in spite of his
behavior to the contrary. Jamie believes in him that no one
has ever done before. She holds him to a higher standard;
bring out the best in him. Jamie is dying of cancer. However,
she spends her remaining days in helping, inspiring, and
transforming others with her positivity.

CINDERELLA: A true Princess
She is a kind young lady. Since her dad passed away, she learned to be
independent and strong. Even though she lives with her wicked stepmother
and stepsisters, she doesn’t get mad at them for she knows she will be
facing consequences once her stepfamily learned of her anger. She is very
patient and calm. Her physical appearance is classical and almost perfect.
Even if she wears a maid‘s outfit, one can tell that she is beautiful.

Belle: Beautiful inside and out
Well, who would not love a fellow reader? Despite her
beauty, Belle was treated as an outcast in her town- her
dreams to escape her provincial life and to go for an
adventure made people look at her in a different manner.
And of course, her dreamy far-off look and her nose stuck
in a book. People could not comprehend why Belle spends
her time reading instead of mingling with them; a concept
only fellow readers would understand. Belle has proven so
many times that it was not only her look that is good about
her, but also her heart. When her father was imprisoned by
the Beast, Belle sacrificed her own freedom in return for
his, and eventually learned to love the Beast in spite of his
outward appearance. – Gerard Francheska Ligot, Contributor

John Tyree: True love’s sacrifice
One of my favorite male characters that I have encountered in contemporary novels is John Tyree.
John shows that true love does not mean owning a person but rather sacrificing his own happiness for
the person that he loved so much. I like that John did everything he could to show Savannah how he
loved her but he was so brave to accept that Savannah’s world did not revolve on him. He made me
realize that not everything or everyone we like would be ours. There are just some things that are
made not to be ours but to teach us lessons. Even then, John did not hold any grudges and hatred to
Savannah. At the end of the story, he donated the money from his father’s coin collections to Tim,
Savannah’s husband.
Severus Snape: A mysterious anti-
hero
Severus Snape wasn't actually the type of character you'd
adore the moment you saw/read about him. He has this puzzle-
box of a character that you couldn't quite put your fingers on.
After watching the sixth movie (Half-Blood Prince) which left me
in a myriad of emotions I decided to read the book and be ahead
of the movies. Turns out that the ever-gloomy professor isn't what
you think he is. I've come to love Snape and has since became my
favorite literary character not because of his undying love for the
mother of 'The Chosen One'; but because of the character's
consistency throughout the books (and film) which put the
readers/viewers into a shock. Just imagine the pain he feels ever
time he looks at Harry Potter and see James' face and Lily's eyes
especially when Harry called him a coward for killing
Dumbledore (on which he was tasked to do so by none other than
Dumbledore himself). Instead of lashing out the truth on Harry he
instead kept it to himself. And let us not forget that epic battle
between him and McGonagall and how he felt so pained to also
be called a coward by the teacher he so respected. But in contrast
to what most people say, I don't consider Snape as a hero. He's more of an anti-hero for me. Playing
as a double agent for both Dumbledore and You-Know-Who is a very hardcore job and only Snape
can do it so flawlessly. I could still tell you thousands of reasons more why I chose Snape but it
would be too much of a spoiler especially if you haven't watched the movies or read the books.

different now. It wasn’t easy for me to accept this simple truth, because there was a time when our
stories were the same, but that was six years and two lifetimes ago.”
“I finally understood what true love meant…love meant that you care for another person’s happiness
more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be.”
