The Origin of the Tarots:the Birth of a Legend

HermeticismThe word Hermeticism derives from ErmeteTrismegisto, three times magician. In its turn itderives from Thoth, the Egyptian god of wis-dom, who had a human body but the head of anibis. Thoth was the scribe of the gods whosebook contained all the knowledge of the world.Hermeticism or the Hermetic cults, followedone after the other in the history ofMediterranean culture from the Fourth centurybc onwards, with the coming together of theGreek religion. This took the form of thepriests who held the Eleusinian Mysteries andEgyptian religion and those of the Cult of Isis.The result was astonishing. The Egyptian reli-gion was completely reinterpreted throughGreek philosophy and those codexes and manu-scripts were attributed to Hermes the Egyptian,trice magician and God of knowledge. Thisesoteric religion developed on parallel lineswith Christianity, but gradually faded out in theMiddle Ages as the erudition required to inter-pret the Hermetic texts was forgotten. It wasthe Arabs with their heritage of theAlexandrian Greek writings who reintroducedthis knowledge into Europe although it had bythen been sadly compromised by numerous

translations, into Egyptian, Greek, Arabic andLatin. Hermetic knowledge spread despite theInquisition and became both a philosophic andcultural reference point for movements likethat of the Rosicrucians and later the FreeMasons.

EgyptianismThe fascination with Egypt followed parallellines independently of Hermeticism. There isnothing surprising about the attraction which apictographic language of a completelyunknown meaning and which appeared toguard huge secrets, held for both scholars andwriters. Archaeological discoveries and ancientartefacts which filled the collections reinforcedthe great importance given to the mythographyof this civilisation.Towards the end of the Eighteenth century anarchaeologist called Court De Gebelin madethe following historical statement: "The Bookof Thoth exists and its pages correspond to theimages of the Tarots". They were invented bythe God Thoth himself and supposedly wereused by Egyptian priests for divinatory purpos-es and initiation rites. Although the statement isbased on objectively weak reasoning it wasembraced and accepted all over France at theheight of the Egyptian craze thanks to thearchaeological finds brought back byNapoleon and the deciphering of the RosettaStone (in 1822). The two tendencies were

joined once and for all with the revival of mag-ical traditions which was taking place at thattime. In 1791 an occultist called Etteilla, publishedthe "Dictionnaire du Livre de Thoth" wherethe magic and divinatory meaning of the Tarotswere codified for the first time. Alphonse LouisCostant, alias Elifas Levi, was one of the great-est occultists of all time. He attempted to con-fer a unified structure to the Western magicaltraditions to which the Tarots were a key in sofar as they were correlated to Massonic sym-bolism, astrology, the Cabbala and alsonumerology. An important follower of Levi wasJean Baptiste Pitois, alias Paul Christian, whoinvestigated Levi’s work in depth and main-tained the conviction that the Tarots were ofEgyptian origin. Later on many others were tobase themselves on the Egyptian myth so as toobtain a closer understanding of the Tarots,especially Papus (Gerard Encausse) andAleister Crowley.Today the Tarots inspired by Egypt are a funda-mental component of the cartomantic tradition;it is impossible to know whether or not theTarots originated in ancient Egypt.

The Interpretation of the Egyptian Tarots The Tarots should be seen as a path. Amagical path in search of knowledge, anexistential path in search of harmony, asymbolic path of growth and acquisition.The Tarots are an alphabet which can rep-resent all the concepts of the human soul.But there is no end to the learning con-tained in this most difficult alphabet. In theanalogy with the letters of an alphabet thewords and phrases arise from the spread,i.e. the sequences of cards laid out in a par-ticular way. Thus just as to pronounce aword it is not sufficient to know the pro-nunciation of the individual letters, in thesame way when interpreting the Tarots thevision of the whole must be borne in mind. Here is a simple spread which can be used as astarting point. Its aim is that of answering ques-tions about who one is, one’s own identity,which components it is made up of and theirrelationship among themselves. It is a layeredpath, in the shape of a pyramid which leads tothe centre of being.

I Tarocchi Egiziani

L'origine dei Tarocchi:la nascita di una leggenda

L'ErmetismoLa parola ermetismo deriva da ErmeteTrismegisto, tre volte mago, ma la figura diquesti a sua volta deriva da Thoth, il dio egiziodella conoscenza, con il corpo umano e latesta di ibis: Thoth, lo scriba degli dei, nellibro del quale era contenuta tutta la conoscen-za del mondo. L'ermetismo, o meglio i cultiermetici, si susseguirono nella storia delleciviltà mediterranee sin dal IV secolo a.C.,quando la religione greca, nei sacerdoti deten-tori dei Misteri Eleusini, e quella egiziana, neisacerdoti del culto di Iside, si incontrarono. Ilrisultato fu sorprendente. Il corpo intero dellareligione egiziana venne reinterpretato attra-verso la filosofia greca e a quei codici e a queimanoscritti veniva attribuito come autoreErmete l'Egiziano, il tre volte mago, il diodella conoscenza. Questa religione esoterica sisviluppò parallelamente a quella cristiana, masi spense nel medioevo a mano a mano che leconoscenze per interpretare i testi ermeticivenivano dimenticate. Furono gli arabi, con laloro eredità di scritti greco alessandrini a rein-trodurre in Europa quella conoscenza, purtrop-po ormai compromessa dalle molteplici tradu-zioni: egiziano, greco, arabo, latino... La cono-

scenza ermetica si diffuse tuttavia nonostantel'inquisizione diventando un punto di riferi-mento sia filosofico che culturale per movi-menti come i Rosacroce e in seguito per laMassoneria.

L'EgizianismoIndipendentemente dall'Ermetismo il fascinodell'Egitto seguiva via parallele. Non deve stu-pire l'attrazione che una lingua pittografica dalsignificato totalmente ignoto e che sembravacustodire enormi segreti esercitava su studiosie scrittori. Le scoperte archeologiche e gliantichi manufatti che affollavano le collezionicontribuivano a portare alla ribalta la mitogra-fia di questa civiltà.Verso la fine del 1700, l’archeologo Court DeGebelin fece un'affermazione storica: "Il librodi Thoth esiste e le sue pagine sono le figuredei Tarocchi". Inventati dallo stesso dio Thoth,sarebbero stati utilizzati dai secerdoti egizianiper pratiche divinatorie e riti iniziatici.L'affermazione per quanto basata su argomen-tazioni obiettivamente deboli venne ripresa eaccettata in tutta la Francia, all'epoca impazzi-ta per l'Egitto a causa dei reperti portati daNapoleone e della decifrazione della stele diRosetta (nel 1822). Il contemporaneo revivaldelle tradizioni magiche sposò definitivamentele due correnti.Etteilla, un occultista, nel 1791 pubblicava il"Dictionnaire du Livre de Thoth" in cui veni-

vano codificati per la prima volta i significatimagico divinatori dei Tarocchi. AlphonseLouis Costant, alias Elifas Levi, fu uno dei piùgrandi occultisti della storia. Egli cercò di darealle tradizioni magiche occidentali una struttu-ra unitaria, struttura dove i Tarocchi erano unachiave, correlati sia alla simbologia massonica,che all'astrologia, che alla Cabala, che alla nume-rologia. Tra i seguaci di Levi bisogna ricordareJean Baptiste Pitois, alias Paul Christian, il qualeapprofondì l'opera di Levi, mantenendo la con-vinzione dell'origine egizia dei Tarocchi. Inseguito molti altri si basarono sul mito egizio peravvicinarsi ai Tarocchi, non ultimi Papus (GerardEncausse) e Aleister Crowley.Oggi, i Tarocchi ispirati all'Egitto sono unacomponente fondamentale della tradizione car-tomantica. Se i Tarocchi siano o meno origina-ti nell'antico Egitto non è dato saperlo.

L'interpretazione dei Tarocchi EgiziI Tarocchi sono un percorso. Un percorsomagico alla ricerca della conoscenza, un per-corso esistenziale alla ricerca dell'armonia, unpercorso simbolico di crescita e acquisizione.Sono un alfabeto in grado di rappresentaretutti i concetti dell'anima umana; un alfabetodifficile, da cui non si finisce mai di imapara-re. Nell'analogia con le lettere di un alfabeto leparole e le frasi sono date dalle disposizioni,ciò da sequenze di carte poste in determinatomodo. E così come per pronunciare corretta-

mente una parola non basta saper guardare lapronuncia delle singole lettere così i Tarocchidevono essere interpretati tenendo conto dellavisione d'insieme.Questa è una disposizione semplice con cui sipuò iniziare. Il suo intento è quello di rispon-dere alle domande su chi si è, qual'è la propriaidentità, in quali componenti è divisa e comequesti si rapportano tra loro. Essa è un percor-so a strati, a forma di piramide, che conduce alcentro dell'essere.

Origen del Tarot:nacimiento de una leyenda

HermetismoLa misma palabra hermetismo deriva deHermes Trimegisto, tres veces mago, figuraque a su vez deriva de Tot, dios egipcio delconocimiento, con cuerpo humano y cabeza deibis: Tot, el escribano de los dioses, en cuyolibro está contenido toda la sabiduría delmundo. El hermetismo, o mejor los cultos herméticos sesucedieron en la historia de las civilizacionesmediterráneas desde el siglo IV a.C., cuando lareligión griega, de la mano de los sacerdotesdetentores de los Misterios Eleusinos, y la egip-cia, con sacerdotes que rendían culto a Isis, seencontraron. El resultado fue sorprendente. Elcuerpo entero de la religión egipcia fue interpre-tado nuevamente a través de la filosofía griega;sus códigos y manuscritos fueron atribuidos aHermes el Egipcio, el tres veces mago, el diosdel saber. Esta religión esotérica se desarrollóparalelamente a la cristiana, pero se fue extin-guiendo durante la Edad Media a medida que losconocimientos necesarios para interpretar los tex-tos herméticos se iban olvidando. Fueron los ára-bes, con su herencia de escritos grecoalejandri-nos los que volvieron a introducir en Europaestos saberes, aunque ya demasiado contamina-

dos por sus múltiples traducciones: al egipcio,griego, árabe, latín... La filosofía herméticasiguió difundiéndose a pesar de la inquisiciónllegando a convertirse en punto de referenciafilosófico y cultural para movimientos como elRosacruz y más adelante la Masonería.

EgiptoAl margen del Hermetismo, el encanto de Egiptoseguía caminos paralelos. No debe extrañar queuna lengua pictográfica de significado totalmen-te desconocido, y que además parecía guardarenormes secretos, ejerciese tanta atracción entreestudiosos y escritores. Los descubrimientosarqueológicos y los antiguos objetos halladosque colmaban las colecciones contribuían aponer de moda la mitografía de esta civilización.Hacia finales de 1700, un arqueólogo, Court DeGebelin, hizo una afirmación histórica: "El librode Tot existe y sus páginas son las figuras delTarot"; inventado por el mismo dios Tot, fue uti-lizado por los sacerdotes egipcios en sus prácti-cas adivinatorias y ritos iniciáticos. Esta afirma-ción, aunque basada en razonamientos objetiva-mente débiles, cobró nueva importancia y acep-tación en una Francia que en esa época delirabapor Egipto, debido en parte a los hallazgos traí-dos por Napoleón y a la interpretación que sehabía hecho de la Piedra de Roseta (en 1822). Elrevival contemporáneo de tradiciones mágicasabrazó definitivamente las dos corrientes.Etteilla, un ocultista, publicó en 1791 el

"Dictionnaire du Livre de Tot" en el que se codi-ficaron por primera vez los significados mágicosy adivinatorios del Tarot. Alphonse LouisCostant, alias Elifas Levi, uno de los ocultistasmás importantes de la historia, trató de dar a lastradiciones mágicas occidentales una estructuraunitaria, donde el Tarot era una clave, en correla-ción con la simbología masónica, la astrología,la Cábala y la numerología. Entre los seguidoresde Levi hay que recordar a Jean Baptiste Pitois,alias Paul Christian, que profundizó en la obrade Levi manteniendo su convicción sobre el ori-gen egipcio del Tarot. Más adelante muchosotros también se basaron en el mito egipcio paraacercarse al Tarot, entre ellos Papus (GerardEncausse) y Aleister Crowley.Hoy en día el Tarot inspirado en Egipto escomponente fundamental de la tradición carto-mántica. Que este Tarot sea o originario o nodel antiguo Egipto, es algo que no sabemos.

Interpretación del Tarot egipcioEl Tarot es un recorrido mágico en busca delconocimiento. Un recorrido existencial enbusca de armonía; un recorrido simbólico decrecimiento y adquisición. Es un alfabetocapaz de representar todos los conceptos delalma humana; un alfabeto difícil del que nuncase termina de aprender. Análogamente a lo quesucede con las letras de un alfabeto, las pala-bras y las frases están determinadas por unadisposición, es decir una secuencia de cartas

colocadas de una forma concreta. Y así comopara pronunciar una palabra correctamente noes suficiente conocer la pronunciación de cadauna de las letras, del mismo modo el Tarottambién tiene que interpretarse teniendo encuenta la visión de conjunto.Esta es una disposición sencilla con la que sepuede empezar. L'origine des Tarots:la naissance d’une légende

L'HermétismeLe mot hermétisme dérive d’HermèsTrismégiste, trois fois grand, mais la figure decelui-ci dérive à son tour de Thot, la divinitéégyptienne du Savoir, au corps humain et à latête d’Ibis: Thot, le scribe des dieux, dont lelivre contenait toute la connaissance du monde.L'hermétisme, ou plus exactement les culteshermétiques, se succédèrent à travers l’histoiredes civilisations méditerranéennes à partir duIVème siècle avant J.C., lorsque la religiongrecque, chez les prêtres détenteurs desMystères Eleusiniens, et la religion égyptienne,chez les prêtres du culte d’Isis, se rencontrè-rent. Le résultat fut surprenant. Le corps entierde la religion égyptienne fut réinterprété à tra-vers la philosophie grecque et Hermèsl'Egyptien, trois fois grand, dieu du Savoir futconsidéré comme l’auteur de ces codes et deces manuscrits. Cette religion ésotérique sedéveloppa parallèlement à la religion chrétien-ne, mais elle s’éteignit au Moyen Age au fur età mesure que les connaissances visant à inter-préter les textes hermétiques étaient oubliées.Ce furent les Arabes, avec leur héritage d’écritsgréco-alexandrins qui introduisirent de nouveauen Europe cette connaissance, hélas désormais

compromise par de multiples traductions: égyp-tien, grec, arabe, latin... Toutefois la connais-sance hermétique se diffusa malgré l’inquisi-tion, devenant un point de référence aussi bienphilosophique que culturel pour des mouve-ments tels que les Rose-croix et ensuite pour laFranc-maçonnerie.

Le culte de l'Égypte Indépendamment de l'Hermétisme, le charmede l’Egypte suivait des voies parallèles. Il nefaut pas s’étonner si cette langue pictogra-phique, au sens totalement inconnu et qui sem-blait garder d’énormes secrets, attira les savantset les écrivains. Les découvertes archéologiqueset les objets antiques des nombreuses collec-tions contribuèrent à placer sur le devant de lascène la mythographie de cette civilisation.Vers la fin du XVIIIème siècle, un archéologue,Court De Gebelin fit une affirmation historique:"Le livre de Thot existe et ses pages sont lesreprésentations des Tarots". Inventés par le dieuThot lui-même, ils auraient été utilisés par lesprêtres égyptiens pour des pratiques divinatoi-res et des rites d’initiation. Quoique basée surdes argumentations objectivement faibles, cetteaffirmation fut reprise et acceptée dans toute laFrance, à l’époque fascinée par l'Egypte suiteaux pièces rapportées par Napoléon et par ledéchiffrage de la stèle de Rosette (en 1822). Lerevival contemporain des traditions magiquesunit définitivement les deux courants.

Etteilla, un occultiste, publia en 1791 le"Dictionnaire du Livre de Thot" dans lequelétaient codifiées pour la première fois les signi-fications magiques et divinatoires des Tarots.Alphonse Louis Costant, alias Elifas Levi, futl’un des plus grands occultistes de l’histoire. Iltenta de donner aux traditions magiques occi-dentales une structure unitaire où les Tarotsconstituaient une clé de lecture pour la symbo-logie maçonnique, l’astrologie, la Cabale et lanumérologie. Parmi les adeptes de Levi il fautciter Jean Baptiste Pitois, alias Paul Christian,qui approfondit l’oeuvre de Levi, gardant ainsila conviction de l’origine égyptienne desTarots. Par la suite beaucoup d’autres se basè-rent sur le mythe égyptien pour se rapprocherdes Tarots, comme par exemple Papus (GérardEncausse) et Aleister Crowley.Aujourd’hui, les Tarots s’inspirant de l'Egypteconstituent une composante fondamentale de lacartomancie. Mais le doute subsiste quant aufait que les Tarots dérivent ou pas de l’Egypteantique.

L'interprétation des Tarot égyptienLes Tarots représentent un parcours. Un par-cours magique à la recherche de la connaissan-ce, un parcours existentiel à la recherche del’harmonie, un parcours symbolique de crois-sance et d’acquisition. Ils constituent un alpha-bet en mesure de représenter tous les conceptsde l’âme; un alphabet difficile qu’on ne cesse

jamais d’apprendre. Dans l’analogie avec leslettres d’un alphabet, les mots et les phrasessont fournis par la disposition des cartes, c’est àdire par des séquences de cartes disposéesd’une certaine façon. En effet, pour prononcercorrectement un mot, il ne suffit pas de savoirla prononciation de chaque lettre, de manièreanalogue les Tarots doivent être interprétés entenant compte d’une vision d’ensemble.Voici une disposition simple avec laquelle onpeut commencer. Son but est de répondre auxquestions suivantes: qui sommes-nous? quelleest notre identité? quels sont les composantsdans lesquels elle se divise? quel rapport ont-ilsles uns avec les autres? Der Ursprung des Tarot:die Geburt einer Legende

Der HermetismusDer Ausdruck Hermetismus stammt vonHermes Trismegistos, in der Legende ein drei-facher Magier, der seinerseits von Thothabstammt, dem ägyptischen Gott des Wissens,dargestellt durch einen menschlichen Körpermit Ibiskopf: in dem Buch, das das gesamteWissen der Welt enthielt, ist Thoth derSchriftgelehrte unter den Göttern. DerHermetismus, oder besser gesagt die hermeti-schen Kultformen, folgten in der Geschichteder Mittelmeerzivilisationen ab dem IV. Jh.v.Chr. aufeinander, als die griechische Religion,in Gestalt der im Besitz der EleusinischenMysterien befindlichen Priester, und die ägypti-sche Religion, in Gestalt der Priester desIsiskultes, aufeinander trafen. Das Ergebnis warerstaunlich. Der gesamte Hauptteil der ägypti-schen Religion wurde mit Hilfe der griechi-schen Philosophie und jenes Kodex neu inter-pretiert. Als Autor dieser Handschriften wurdenun Hermes der Ägypter angenommen, derdreifache Magier, der Gott des Wissens. Dieseesoterische Religion entwickelte sich parallelzur christlichen Religion, erlosch jedoch imMittelalter, als das zur Interpretation der her-metischen Texte notwendige Wissen langsam in

Vergessenheit geriet. Erst durch die Araber undderen Erbe an griechisch-alexandrinischenHandschriften wurde es in Europa neu einge-führt, war jedoch bereits durch die zahlreichenÜbersetzungen, unter anderem in die ägypti-sche, griechische, arabische und lateinischeSprache kompromittiert. Das hermetischeWissen fand jedoch trotz der InquisitionVerbreitung und wurde sowohl auf philosophi-schem als auch auf kulturellem Gebiet einBezugspunkt für Bewegungen wie dieRosenkreuzer und anschließend für dieFreimaurerei.

Die ägyptische BewegungDie von Ägypten ausgehende Faszination ging,hiervon unabhängig, einen zum Hermetismusparallelen Weg. Die Anziehungskraft, die eineBilderschrift mit völlig unbekannterBedeutung, welche immense Geheimnisse zuhüten schien, auf Gelehrte und Schriftstellerausübte, ist nicht verwunderlich. Die zahlrei-chen, ausgestellten archäologischen Fundstückeund antiken Kunstwerke trugen dazu bei, dieMythenfor-schung dieser Zivilisation in denVordergrund zu rücken.Gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts stellte derArchäologe Court De Gebelin eine Behauptungauf, die in die Geschichte eingegangen ist:“Das Buch des Thoth existiert, und seine Seitenentsprechen den Abbildungen des Tarots”. VomGott Thot erfunden, wurden sie angeblich von

ägyptischen Priestern zur Weissagung und fürInitiationsriten verwendet. Obwohl dieBehauptung objektiv betrachtet auf einerschwachen Argumentation basierte, wurde siein ganz Frankreich übernommen. Es herrschteeine regelrechte Ägypten-Hysterie, die durchdie von Napoleon mitgebrachten Fundstückenund die Entzifferung des Steins von Rosette imJahre 1822 ausgelöst wurde. Das zeitgenössi-sche Revival der magischen Traditionen ver-schmolz die beiden Strömungen endgültig.Etteilla, ein Okkultist, veröffentlichte 1791 den"Dictionnaire du Livre de Thot", in dem diemagisch-seherischen Bedeutungen des Tarotszum ersten Mal notiert wurden. Alphonse LouisCostant, alias Eliphas Levi, war einer der größ-ten Okkultisten der Geschichte. Er versuchte,den westlichen magischen Traditionen eine ein-heitliche Struktur zu geben, in der das Taroteine Schlüsselstellung einnahm und mit derSymbolik der Freimaurer, der Astrologie, derKabbala und der Numerologie in Verbindungstand. Unter den Anhängern von Levi erinnernwir an Jean Baptiste Pitois, alias Paul Christian,der Levis Werk vertiefte, wobei er seine Über-zeugung bezüglich der ägyptischen Herkunftdes Tarots beibehielt. Später stützten sich vieleandere auf den ägyptischen Mythos, um sichdem Tarot zu nähern, nicht zuletzt Papus(Gerard Encausse) und Aleister Crowley.Heute ist das von Ägypten inspirierte Tarot einfundamentales Element in der Tradition der

Esoterik. Ob die Ursprünge des Tarots im anti-ken Ägypten liegen, werden wir nie erfahren.

Die Deutung des ägyptischen TarotDas Tarot ist eine Art Reise. Eine magischeReise auf der Suche nach Wissen, eine existen-tielle Reise auf der Suche nach Harmonie, eineReise, die Wachstum und Vorankommen sym-bolisiert. Es handelt sich um ein Alphabet, dasin der Lage ist, alle Konzepte der menschlichenSeele auszudrücken. Ein schwieriges Alphabet,von dem man nie aufhört zu lernen. Wie beiden Buchstaben eines Alphabets werden dieWorte und die Sätze von den Auslagenbestimmt, das heißt von Abfolgen von Karten,die auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise angeord-net werden. Und so wie es nicht ausreicht, dieAussprache der einzelnen Buchstaben zubetrachten, um ein Wort richtig auszusprechen,so muß auch das Tarot unter Berücksichtigungseiner Gesamtheit gedeutet werden.Es handelt sich hierbei um eine einfacheAuslage für den Anfang. Ihr Zweck ist es,Antworten auf Fragen zu unserer Person zu fin-den, zu unserer Identität, zu den Elementen, ausder sie besteht, und deren Beziehung unterein-ander. Sie ist eine Art Reise in mehreren„Schichten“, die die Form einer Pyramidebesitzt und zur Mitte des Seins führt.
