Dear Friends,“Thank you” seems the only appropriate way to begin my letter. Your generosity this past year has been extraor-dinary, and considering the difficult financial times we are experiencing, it only proves your faith in our most important mission – cancer, its treatment and the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

Our Giving Campaign was most successful, and you can see in this newsletter the many generous donors committed to our mission. Our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you.

Our “Drive for a Cure” event on October 23, 2009, was a huge success, and more than 400 people enjoyed a wonderful experience. A feeling of friendship was everywhere. I know that my dear parents, Tita and Joseph Monti, would be so proud to see the young generation of this family and their friends so involved in such a wonderful event.

We look forward to November 6, 2010, when our trademark Ball of the Year will be held at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Mark your calendars for this very special evening. We are hoping to see our old friends and many new friends. 2010 also holds the launch of our brand- new Web site. Please visit www.donmontifoundation.org on February 1 to see its unveiling.

We are pleased to be able to report such good news over the past year. This is the longest newsletter we have

ever published; and it is filled with so much positive information. Please enjoy it and remember that The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation is alive and well thanks to you, our dear friends. Because of you, all that you read on the following pages was made possible. May God bless you all. With gratitude,

The Monti-Saladino family at Drive for the Cure: Joe & Sarah Saladino, Arthur Saladino & Caroline Monti Saladino, Joe & Danielle Faria, Anna Saladino, Melissa & Don Saladino

Richard Monti, Co-chair, The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, and Tom Hoeft, Chief Operating Officer, Huntington Hospital, review floor plans with Robert Mottola, Vice President of Development and Community Relations, Huntington Hospital; Theresa Jacobellis, Director of Public Affairs; and Caroline Monti Saladino, President, The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation.

A“An oasis.” “A haven.” “A place to go to forget that you’re in the hospital.” These are just some of the words that patients, families and staff members have used to describe the Tita and Joseph Monti Patient Lounge and Atrium at Huntington Hospital. Located opposite the nursing station on the hospital’s 25-bed Don Monti Oncology Unit, the lounge recently opened after a major renovation underwritten by a generous grant from The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation.

Decorated in soothing shades of mauve with rich wood-toned paneling and furnishings, the lounge is open around the clock for use by patients and visitors. The unit’s liberal visiting policies mean that at any given time one might find multiple generations enjoying the ambience.

“I think of the lounge as a wellness room,” says Angela Brown, whose husband, Willie, has been hospitalized numerous times since being diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in January 2008.

“I consider it a home away from home,” agrees the couple’s grown son, David. “It is a place for families to come together and share quality time.”

In the room’s westward-facing atrium section, plenty of natural sunlight streams in the large windows. Another section contains a flat screen television and a fully stocked bookcase with complimentary reading materials. But the most popular feature is the outdoor deck, which attracts visitors even on a crisp fall afternoon.

“Sometimes I see staff taking their breaks out there, and that’s nice because it gives the patients an opportunity to bond with their caregivers outside of the clinical environment,” says Mrs. Brown.

“Patients will visit with their children and grand- children in the lounge or out on the deck. It is a nice environment for them to share a meal or visit without worrying about disturbing other patients sharing their room,” notes Gail Probst, RN, AOCN, Director of Cancer Services at Huntington Hospital.

“It is so peaceful. It’s definitely a place where patients and families can forget what they’re going through, even for a short time,” says Mr. Brown’s daughter, Avita Fleming, who was visiting along with her 16-month-old daughter, Langston.

The lounge renovation is Phase I of a planned four- phase overall renovation for the unit. In Phases II and III, patient rooms on the west side of the corridor will be renovated, with several being converted to private rooms. Direct access to outdoor balconies will be afforded.

“We are so grateful to the Monti family for supporting this project,” says Mrs. Probst. “The lounge has enhanced the healing environment on our unit and is a fitting trib-ute to Tita and Joseph Monti’s lifelong mission of caring for cancer patients.”

Dedication of the Joseph and Tita Monti Cancer Research CenterOn Sept. 28, 2009, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) President Bruce Stillman joined The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation to dedicate the Joseph and Tita Monti Cancer Research Center. In this new facility, CSHL Cancer Center Deputy Director and Howard Hughes Medical Investigator Dr. Scott Lowe’s team of researchers are focused on lymphoma and leukemia research.

The Joseph and Tita Monti Cancer Research Center is part of the Quick Laboratory building – one of six new research buildings in CSHL’s Hillside Laboratories complex. The Quick Laboratory building will house researchers who link the genetic basis of cancer

with therapeutic outcomes. The goal is to discover and test new therapeutic targets and strategies to combat the disease.

Uniting the latest technology such as RNA interference with clinical expertise in analyzing human cancer tissues, the work being done in the Joseph and Tita Monti Cancer Research Center is based on a new approach that greatly speeds up the discovery of all the genes that cause various types of cancer. CSHL scientists have also created models that accurately predict how particular cancers respond to chemotherapy and identify which of a patient’s cancer-causing genetic mutations contribute to treatment resistance – critical pieces of information that will help in the design of effective, patient-specific therapeutic regimens.

Drive for a CureOur Drive for a Cure, held Oct. 23, 2009, at Drive 495, Don and Joe Saladino’s Manhattan premier golf and fitness club, raised thousands of dollars to help The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation continue its fight against cancer. It was a spectacular evening of fun, music, food and – of course – a little golf talk! Attendees vied for prizes and auction items including a 40" high-definition TV, golf outings and lessons, tickets to the 2010 Masters Practice Round and a Cancun vacation. Thank you to our many donors and participants for helping make Drive for a Cure such a success.

We’d also like to extend a special thank you to our donors, sponsors and auction winners for their generosity.

Bible Camp kids collected $3,000 for The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation.

OOn July 17, 2009, Bible Campers at Maria Regina Church in Seaford, N.Y., celebrated raising $3,000 for The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation.

Laurie van Daatselaar, director of the one-week camp and advocate for cancer patients and children, encourages her campers to raise money for a worthwhile cause each year. As a breast cancer survivor, van Daatselaar knows the value of compassionate, high-quality health care – the kind of care that The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation

helps support. And because she believes in “kids helping kids,” she chooses a charity that benefits children and presents it to the campers as a service project.

Thank you, Laurie and the Maria Regina Bible Campers!

Bible Camp Kids Raise $3,000

Friends of Tory Zabatino Raise More than $12,000One measure of a life well-lived is not its length, but the impact on the people around you. Tory Zabatino died of cancer in his early 20s, but he was the kind of friend everyone would like to have. In remembrance and honor of his life, the Friends of Tory Zabatino have held a bar crawl to toast Tory and raise money for the fight against cancer.

On Nov. 7, 2009, The Friends of Tory Zabatino held the 4th Annual NYC Bar Crawl. Each bar involved in the event donated one free drink to each participant or person who donated money to the cause; more than $12,000 was raised for The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. Last year the group raised about $10,000.

Tory’s friends are proud to help keep his memory alive and show every-one what a special person he was by carrying on this bar crawl tradition. Steve Arocho, Scott Cianciulli, Christine Cimino and Matt Dodd

Giving Campaign DonorsKnowledge is vain save when there is work,And all work is empty save when there is love; And when you work with love, you bind yourselfTo yourself, and to one another, and to God.

– Tita Monti, founder, The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation

TTita Monti died in 2006, followed the next year by her beloved husband, Joseph. Yet her words and the legacy of The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation live on.

It is in this spirit that, in 2009, we initiated a Giving Campaign in lieu of our Ball and Journal. You have been generous in your time, treasure and talents, and your generosity will help us continue in our efforts to eradicate cancer.

The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation and the Monti-Saladino families extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the 2009 Giving Campaign.

For the second year, young Ally Gottesman used her trick-or-treating time to collect money for The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation.

Here’s Ally’s letter:

Dear friends and neighbors,We had a great amount of donations this year with the

C.C.C. (Candy Cures Cancer). Thanks to everyone who helped. Two cookie sales and one Halloween trick-or-treating later, we raised $3,000 … and 54 cents.

I really appreciated all your help! This money is going to help cure cancer, and we should all feel good about that! I’m not the only one who helped this cause, you know! You helped too! My friend, Anna, helped me with the cookie sales at my dad’s café.

See you next year! (Unless cancer has been cured!)Love,Ally

On Friday, Nov. 27, the 3rd Annual Virginia Campione Memorial Fundraiser was held at Abbracciamento’s Restaurant in Rego Park, Queens. Friends and family of Ginny gathered to honor her memory while raising money for causes she would be proud of.

While contributions received are usually designated for scholarships, this year $5,000 of the monies donated was also designated for The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. Ginny received top-notch care through the Foundation and North Shore-LIJ, and this is a small token of the Campione family’s appreciation.

CCaregivers and family members recently witnessed a heartwarming connection that spanned two continents: Anthony Zagami of Queens finally had the chance to thank Martina Kager of Munich, Germany, in person for her selfless bone marrow donation that helped him survive his battle with acute myelogenous leukemia.

When Mr. Zagami experienced unusual weakness and exhaustion in 2006, he was mildly concerned about his symptoms. An avid runner, he attributed them to over-training for an upcoming marathon. After a medical evaluation, Mr. Zagami received his diagnosis that June and remained in North Shore University Hospital until November, when he received a bone marrow transplant. After recuperating for six weeks, Mr. Zagami went home.

The occasion of Mr. Zagami’s and Ms. Kager’s life-changing meeting was the Seventh Annual Celebration of Life Dinner of North Shore University Hospital’s Don Monti Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation Program at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The event is a highlight for bone marrow donors and recipients, family members, healthcare professionals and supporters.

The program is supported by The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. The foundation is named for Don Monti, who succumbed to acute myeloblastic leukemia at North Shore University Hospital in 1972 at 16 years old. Within days of his passing, his parents, the late Tita and Joseph Monti, committed to founding an organization in his memory, dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. They established the foundation at the hospital and over the next three decades, raised and contributed more than $36 million toward cancer research, education, care and fellowship.

Today, The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation is under the stewardship of Don’s sister, Caroline Monti Saladino. As she watched Mr. Zagami and Ms. Kager eagerly communicate through an interpreter, Ms. Saladino said that she strongly felt the presence of her mother and father, the foundation’s founders.

Mr. Zagami summed up the spirit of the reunion in just a few words: “I think Martina is going to be like a sister to me. We are always going to stay in contact. It’s a very happy ending.”

Ruthee-Lu Bayer Dedicates Her Life’s Work to Helping Cancer PatientsRuthee-Lu Bayer, MD, prides herself on the care and support she and her team provide at the Don Monti Stem Cell Transplant Unit at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, N.Y. There, she has served as director of the Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplantation Program since 2002.

Dr. Bayer’s work has a great impact on patients’ and families’ lives every day of the week. “The highs are very high, the lows are very low and there isn’t much in between,” says Dr. Bayer. “But we give patients the opportunity for treatment and survival when standard treatments may fall short. We gauge ourselves on two kinds of successes – the first, when the patient does well and has long-term survival, and the second, when we do everything we possibly can and help patients and their families to find some form of peace about their situation.”

The passion she shows for her work is clearest when it comes to her patients. She likes to think of the unit as an extreme health spa, and her team often arranges options for alternative medicine such as aromatherapy and reflexology. “We give our all to our patients,” says Dr. Bayer, “and in a time when it is sometimes hard to stay positive, we are constant cheerleaders, and helping them to feel better is the best reward.”

Her interests and expertise in hematology-oncology, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation are evi-dent in not only her interactions with patients, but also in the articles she has written and lectures she has given on research- and treatment-related topics.

Her knowledge and dedication have also helped bring greater distinction to NSUH, including gaining accredi-tation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) for its Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Program.

Dr. Bayer is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, and board eligible in Hematology. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, International Society for Hematology and Graft Engineering, and American Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation.

She received her medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y. She completed an internship and served her residency with the Department of Internal Medicine, and fulfilled a fellow-ship program in the Department of Hematology-Oncology at NSUH. Prior to coming to NSUH, she was assistant director of the Bone Marrow and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.
