In keeping with this, Compagnie du Ponant has released a number of new themed cruises for 2010, including voyages that focus on gastronomy, golf and wellness. Le Boreal, Compagnie du Ponant’s newest ship, will offer a 9-night Harmony cruise designed to pamper guests with alfresco massages, yoga, Pilates and more while visiting some of Europe’s finest ports. Experienced health and wellness specialists will be onboard to offer expert advice and help guests rebalance both their minds and bodies. The 7-night Gourmet Odyssey, the company’s first gastronomic cruise, will take place onboard Le Diamant. Michelin-starred chefs and renowned sommeliers will join passengers for a journey of culinary discovery around the Mediterranean. Golf will be the main focus of a 7-night cruise called Tee-Time in the Mediterranean, sailing roundtrip from Nice on Le Ponant, where guests can play at several world-class golf courses.

A NEW s IgNATurEms ryndam is the most recent Holland America Line ship to receive the line’s signature of Excellence enhancements. During a 17-day drydock in Freeport, Bahamas, she received a number of upgrades including the addition of a Mix Lounge, a retreat Pool, Canaletto Italian restaurant and a showroom at sea as well as Lanai staterooms. In addition, her staterooms and bathrooms were upgraded with new fixtures and soft furnishings. The retreat on the Lido Deck now boasts a new bar, a new pizzeria and a large LED screen for evening movies. Other ships still to receive signature of Excellence upgrades are ms Maasdam and ms statendam. These will be completed in two phases, starting this year and finishing in 2013.

EurOPEAN MAgICIn just over a year, Carnival Magic will make her debut as part of Carnival Cruise Lines’ season in Europe. Her maiden voyage will depart Venice on 1 May 2011 on the way to her homeport, Barcelona. The 130,000-ton ship will have several features in common with her sister ship, Carnival Dream, including a WaterWorks aqua park; Ocean Plaza, a café and live entertainment area; and adults-only retreat, Serenity. Carnival Magic’s 2011 season will include three 7-day, six 9-day and eight 12-day voyages, cruising from Barcelona between May and October 2011.

THE NExT LEvEL OF A Ir TrAvELAir New Zealand is leading the sky-charge with new seat configurations in economy class that allow passengers to lie down during flights. The lie-flat seats will be available on the new Boeing 777-300ER due for delivery this November. The first 11 window rows in economy class will be engineered so that the footrests fold up all the way to the backs of the seats in front. Called Skycouches, these seats will have space for children to play or, if three in a row are folded up, room for two adults to lie down and relax during long-haul flights. To gain access to the bed-like seats, you need to purchase all three seats – the first two at full price and the third at approximately half the cost of a single seat. Business Premier will also receive an upgrade with the introduction of on-demand food and drink service, and meals freshly prepared onboard.

easoned travellers often praise the virtues of autumn travel, which offers the best mix of peak- and off-season benefits, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. Generally, autumn brings fewer tourists, cheaper airfares and hotel rates, a more relaxed atmosphere and more comfortable temperatures. Smaller crowds mean shorter queues at major attractions and

opportunities to explore countries in more depth; locals who have been avoiding summer holiday crowds start to re-emerge in the cafés and bars. Typically, you will enjoy better service at banks, tourist offices and restaurants, and not have to compete for attention.

As summer’s heat turns into a mellow autumn, Mother Nature begins to paint the landscape in burnished hues of gold, crimson and orange, and change is in the air as she prepares for the long cold days of winter.

North america aND alaska There is nothing more spectacular than the intense colours autumn brings to the forests of Canada. It is a delicious time to drink in the vivacious reds and deep pumpkin oranges and yellows of the countryside.

Autumn in Alaska is an ideal time to view bears, moose, caribou, whales and seabirds against a backdrop of magnificent scenery. One of Alaska’s most amazing wildlife spectacles is the annual convergence in autumn of the greatest concentration of eagles in the world. The rich hues of fall foliage in Denali National Park is reason enough to visit Alaska at this time of year.

While New England is the queen of classic autumn scenery, other regions of the United States also have plenty to offer. Autumn is harvest season in Northern California wine country and connoisseurs flock to the vineyards to sample the vintage. In San Francisco, warm weather and sunny skies officially signal the start of what locals call their ‘Indian summer’.

Fall, as it’s called in the United States, is full of festivals and special events with great food and live entertainment, and iconic celebrations such as Halloween and Thanksgiving. Autumn in New York has been acclaimed in song lyrics and movie titles for good reason: ask any New Yorker and chances are the season is his or her favourite time of year in the Big Apple.

europeVisiting in autumn means you can explore Europe’s most memorable landmarks at your own pace and not have to worry about crowds. You can spend quality time studying Renaissance paintings at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, get close to the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, and linger over coffee in a café without queues forming outside.

In Paris, the weather is still warm enough for pleasant walks along the famous boulevards and park trails. After the summer hordes leave Southern France, its rustic villages remain drenched in warm Mediterranean sun, and its lavender fields, vineyards, and country roads are still there to be enjoyed by off-peak travellers. The crisp weather is a fine complement to Loire Valley wines, and one of France’s most highly-anticipated events – the release of the season’s beaujolais – takes place at this time.

In Italy, autumn is the best time for gourmets. Truffles, chestnuts, wild mushrooms, wine and olives are all treasures that can be tasted by in-the-know travellers at this time of year.

In Austria’s elegant capital city, Vienna, the opera and theatre season starts in autumn. You can enjoy evening concerts, visit Schönbrunn Palace, watch the precise moves of the city’s famed Lipizzaner stallions or just sit and ponder the magnificent art collection at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. And of course, Munich’s world-famous Oktoberfest is another wonderful reason to visit in the European autumn.

Ah, the tango! They say the dance captures the soul of Argentina: melancholic, wistful, erotic. In the old neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires, locals tango among evening shadows as raspy voices sing of love. In the great tango clubs of the city, professional dancers make floorboards and emotions quiver.

For me, it is the rough passion of street dancing in places such as Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo that is best. I sit at a café, surrounded by jaunty church spires and ornate houses, as guitars twang and tango dancers click across the cobblestones.

Buenos Aires is full of such bohemian neighbourhoods. In Caballito, I like rummaging for old maps and stamps at stalls in the local park. Barrio Norte hides the tranquil Japanese Gardens, with their trickling streams and smug carp, while Palermo is the place to be for cutting-edge fashion without the attitude: boutique owners are more than happy to chat about their latest designs.

Of course, first-timers should head to La Boca, a riverside district associated with the city’s twin passions of soccer and tango. Houses are brightly painted in soccer-team colours, and street dancers and artists entertain along the pedestrian Caminito: touristy but highly enjoyable. I also like to wander upriver to Puerto Madero, a once-rusty port area now buzzing with restaurants overlooking the River Plate.

Just west of here is the heart of Buenos Aires, around the Plaza de Mayo, with its Colonial buildings and pink presidential palace. The city’s main boulevard, Avenida 9 de Julio, and the ornate architecture everywhere are reminders that this was once the wealthiest city in the world.

Women in high heels parade their pampered pooches along streets of palatial buildings adorned with statues, while white- haired gentlemen haunt grand old cafés. My favourite is atmospheric La Biela in Recoleta. This upper-class suburb also has elegant boulevards lined with jacaranda trees and boutiques flaunting designer clothes. Its cemetery, though, is the biggest attraction; as well as the tombs of Eva Perón (Evita) and many a national hero, it houses some 6,000 mausoleums studded with saints, winged Victories and opulence.

By nightfall, Palermo Viejo, with its cobblestone streets and plazas where teenagers strum guitars and funky bars spill onto the pavement, is where I want to be. This is now Buenos Aires’ trendiest dining district, with restaurants showcasing the city’s top chefs. Tuck in to some outstanding food and prepare to tango into the night.

Q: Why do you prefer Tauck World Discovery?A: We love the way Tauck does things; everything is included and you soon realise it is fantastic value.

Q: What style of tour do you prefer?A: We love cruising and we have been on six cruises with Tauck, most with Compagnie du Ponant. We have been on Le Ponant three times and Le Levant twice. We enjoy how these ships only carry between 60 and 90 passengers.

Q: Do you have any special memories of your trip?A: In the Ukraine, we were taken to see the Panorama Museum of Sevastopol, where the siege of the city during the Crimean War comes to life in painted murals. Then, as a surprise, a bus took us to Yalta, where we dined at a restaurant with panoramic views of Swallow’s Nest, a beautiful romantic castle.

Q: What was your most recent trip?A: Last September, we sailed on Le Levant to Istanbul and the Black Sea for 12 days. Then we joined another Tauck tour of Italy on Le Ponant for 11 days, visiting Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily and Malta.

Q: What did you enjoy most about your tour of Italy?A: One of the really special things was being taken into the Vatican for a private viewing. It is an example of how well Tauck does things. They also take you to places that larger tour groups cannot go. For example, in Venice, they do not take you to large glass- blowing places; they take you to smaller ones where you will get good value for money.

Q: Is there anything else that you appreciate about Tauck?A: There are always little surprises that are not shown on the itinerary and they also give you little unexpected gifts – what they call lagniappes. For example, you will visit a leather workshop and then, at dinner, you will find a leather bookmark waiting for you on your seat. It is a lovely touch.

Q: Would you recommend Tauck?A: Definitely. Their Tour Directors make you feel as though you are family. The people you travel with are also friendly. They are usually aged between 50 and 80 and there is always a good mix of people.

Q: Where will you go on your next trip?A: In September/October we are going with Tauck to Egypt and Jordan and then we join another Tauck tour for a safari in Tanzania. They don’t call it Tauck World Discovery for nothing! We cannot wait.

the voyages of the great explorers filled our history books at school and this year, Cruise West will make modern-day

maritime history as it follows in their wake during an extraordinary 335-day circumnavigation of the world.

The Voyages of the Great Explorers programme will trace the travels of Marco Polo, the Phoenicians, the Vikings, Captain Cook and Magellan through six ‘chapters’, each focused on an exotic region of the globe.

The story begins in Singapore on 6 March 2010, when 120-passenger flagship Spirit of Oceanus sets sail for India via the islands of the Andaman Sea. From India, she will travel to Egypt, visiting an array of Middle Eastern ports en route.

History buffs and modern-day seafarers can choose one voyage or a whole chapter, or piece together as many cruises as they like to design the journey of a lifetime.

Chapter Two takes up the story of the Phoenicians as the ship makes six cruises through the Mediterranean; Chapter Three, the Viking Sagas, will transport guests around Scandinavia and Northern Europe and cross the Atlantic Ocean on its way to Canada.

The story of Columbus and the New World is the focus of Chapter Four, while Chapter Five explores the warm waters of the South Pacific, following the exploits of Captain James Cook.

The final chapter sees the ship cruise from Darwin to Singapore following in the wake of Ferdinand Magellan.

Three captains will guide the Spirit of Oceanus on this epic journey, an adventure that will cross 14 seas and oceans, transit four canals and call at 242 ports and 85 UNESCO World Heritage sites in 59 countries.

Captain Malcolm Scanlan, a former QE2 first officer, will take the helm for the final legs of the voyage, through New Zealand and Australian waters.

Voyage 22, the 17-night cruise from Auckland to Sydney, will reveal New Zealand’s amazing geothermal sites, with Smithsonian guest lecturer and geologist Kirk Kempter accompanying a boat landing on the still-active, volcanic White Island.

Passengers will attend a wine-tasting in Napier before browsing the art galleries of Wellington, then sail on to stately Christchurch. Spirit of Oceanus will also venture into Fjordland National Park for a glimpse of spectacular Milford Sound before heading across the Tasman to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Sydney.

Eminent zoologist Clyde Roper will accompany Voyage 23, the 19-night cruise to Darwin that departs Sydney on New Year’s Day 2011. Guests will learn about the unique landscapes and abundant wildlife of Fraser, Lady Elliot and Hinchinbrook islands, snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef and learn more about Aboriginal culture.
