Medieval JapanEssays in Institutional History

John W. Hall and Jeffrey P. Mass, editors

The view of medieval Japan that emergesfrom this pioneering collection is a muchmore diverse and energetic one thanordinarily portrayed. The authors presentnew analytical insights and expand ourknowledge of the political structure of theHeian court, of the interests behind thecreation of the Kamakura military govern-ment and their modification under theMuromachi regime, and of the evolution ofthe land-tax systems which underlay thepolitical structure.

TreasuresAmong MenThe Fudai Daiinyo in Tokugawa Japan

Harold BolithoBy the middle of the seventeenth century, theTokugawa Bakufu (shogunate) seemed wellon the way to achieving centralized controlof Japan. Why did it subsequently weaken andfall? Mr. Bolitho breaks with tradition andanalyzes this question by focusing on thefudai daimyo. Disputing the conventionalportrayal of these men as paragons of fealtyto the shogun, he describes the competingclaims upon their loyalty and their self-interest. In the final years of conflict that ledto the Meiji Restoration they refused tojeopardize their positions by fighting for theTokugawa house that had raised them upnearly three centuries before. $12.50

Important ASIAN STUDIES TEXTSfrom ALDINE

VILLAGE LIFE IN SOUTH INDIA: Cultural Design and Environmental VariationALAN R. BEALS, University of California, Riverside

Over the past 2,000 years South Indian civil-ization has undergone constant change andmodification. But the South Indian village hasmaintained its basic character, adjusting to avariety of environments and countless con-quests yet always adhering to a world viewthat pictures the entire universe as a har-monious entity. Professor Beals describes theSouth Indian world view; the close relation-ship among human beings, grain crops andcattle; the settlement patterns and socialstructures that characterize village life; theagricultural technology and ecology; thetechniques of population regulation that havetraditionally operated to maintain appro-

priate man-to-land ratios; the relationshipsamong villages; religious rituals and institu-tions; the relationship between the villagesand the increasingly powerful Indian govern-ment; and the new ecology resulting frommodernization. In a final chapter he weavestogether all these varied aspects and themesinto a description of the seamless web of re-lationships that have preserved this success-ful adaptation of man for many centuries.

CHINESE LITERATURE: Popular Fiction and DramaH.C. CHANG, Wolfson College, Cambridge

"There is no richer anthology of Chinese ver-nacular literature in English translation nowon the market. Judging by the uniform excel-lence of the translations, I would predict that ifDr. Chang continues in this line of endeavorhe should in a matter of years win general rec-ognition as the foremost translator of Chinesevernacular literature in our time. But Dr.Chang is also a sensitive critic and eruditescholar: each of the selections is prefaced bya long essay containing copious backgroundinformation for the proper appreciation ofthat selection in its cultural context. Thetwelve essays, together with the General In-troduction, constitute in themselves an im-pressive guide to the major genres and works

of Chinese fiction and drama."—C. T. Hsia,Professor of Chinese, Columbia University

This book illustrates the art of the Chinesestory-teller—the bards, flute players, singers, mummers and actors who entranced theaudiences that crowded the fair grounds andstages of Chinese cities from the SouthernSung (c. 1100 AD) onward. The twelve storiesand scenes from plays—many of them here-tofore untranslated—are brilliantly trans-lated by a Chinese scholar whose narrativeskill matches that of his subjects.
