The Desert BiomeOdalis Uribe
What is it?What makes a desert is not the fact that it is hot, but the fact that it
lacks precipitation.
Covers ⅕ of earth’s surface.
There are hot and dry deserts just like there are cold deserts.
...continued...Some disturbances are:
occasional fires
extreme cold weather(for both hot and cold weather)
sudden, infrequent, intense rains that can cause flooding
There are four types of deserts:
Hot and Dry Deserts
Semiarid Deserts
Coastal Deserts
Cold Deserts
Where is it?Deserts are located between 15 and 35 degrees latitude.
Both North and South of the equator.
Larger deserts are usually found away from coasts in areas where the moisture from the ocean rarely reaches.
There are exceptions where some deserts are located on the west coast.
There is a formation of coastal fog, the aridity is the result of cold oceanic currents.
Locations of the Major DesertsNorth America:
Great Basin
Mojave
Sonoran
Chihuahuan
Africa: Sahara Desert
Middle East: Negev Desert
Asia: Gobi Desert
How Does it Affect Life on Earth?Every biome is important because it is home to millions of species.
Humans, animals, and plants are all unknowingly linked together.
It is important to keep the desert biome safe because it contains a food chain that affects us all.
Once this food chain begins to fail, it will be a continuous decline in various populations.
Every plant, animal, and human life is important to earth.
Are There Any Problems?Global Warming
Increased temperatures causes the increase of droughts(current California drought!!!) which leaves many animals and plants without water, a major necessity for life.
Wildfires
Increased alteration of the landscape
Grazing Animals
May destroy many desert plants
One of many human-caused problems, nuclear waste.
JUST A FEW PROBLEMS
The SolutionsUse water more efficiently.
Planting sand-fixing bushes and trees.
Digging artificial grooves in the ground so that when it rains the water will be retained.
It will also trap any windblown seeds.
