Dear Friends—

Our program year, “SAAGO Celebrates!” had a wonderful start at our first event on September 18 at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. It was great seeing so many of you, and meeting some of you for the first time!

Our next three programs continue the theme of celebrating our membership by featuring the talents of five of our members. We begin with a double-header on October 30. At 2:00 p.m., SAAGO co-sponsors member Jeffrey Campbell in an organ concert at St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church that celebrates Jeffrey’s fifteen years as Associate Director of Music and Principal Organist at the church. The program is entitled “The Romantic Century” and features the music of Reger, Franck, Saint-Säens, Vierne and Rheinberger. Jeffrey will be joined by violinist Lauren Rustad Roth, and a reception follows the concert. At 7:00 p.m., SAAGO co-sponsors the first of the Johnson Series organ concerts at the University of Arizona. The concert will be performed by member Chris Fresolone who will be joined by percussionist Dave Walton and the Tucson Girls Chorus in a program of the music of Dupré, Hampton, and Fresolone!

November 13 brings our annual Showcase Concert which features members Ji Sun Lee, Sara Tobe, and Janet Tolman performing on the recently installed Holtkamp organ at the Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior in Green Valley. There will be a brief membership meeting at 2:00, followed by the concert at 3:00. A reception follows the concert. Although I realize many of you have Sunday morning commitments, I do hope you will make every effort to attend the membership meeting as well as the concert.

We truly are fortunate to have so much talent in our membership!

As always, this issue of The Cypher is full of wonderful information, and I commend it to you for your reading.

I look forward to seeing you all on October 30!

Blessings—

Doug

A couple thoughts to ponder . . .A couple thoughts to ponder . . .A couple thoughts to ponder . . . from Phillips Brooks, clergyman, long-time rector of Boston’s Trinity Episcopal Church, and briefly Bishop of Massachusetts, particularly remembered as author of the text of “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

I do not pray for a lighter load, but for a stronger back.

She has performed internationally and has won top prizes in several competitions including first prizes in the President's Concerto Competition at the University of Arizona and the Contemporary Music Society Competition at Arizona State University. She holds degrees from Presbyterian College, S. Korea, Arizona State University, and the University of Arizona, where she studied organ with Dr. Pamela Decker. Dr. Lee has taught at Cochise College in Sierra Vista and at The University of Arizona. She is director of music and organist at Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior, Green Valley. Her program includes Concerto del Signor Meck in b minor (J. G. Walther),Tierce en taille (Guilain), and Choral Improvisation sur le "Victimae paschali" (Tournemire). She holds a bachelor’s degree in organ performance with a minor in piano performance from Washburn University. From the Program ChairFrom the Program ChairFrom the Program Chair

Hello SAAGO! As you all know, we had our first event of the season, SAAGO Celebrates, on September 18th. It was such a joy for me to reconnect with those of you I already knew and to have a chance to connect with some of you that I hadn’t met in person before. I’m beyond thrilled with the attendance and the overwhelming feeling

of community and support that we had at this event, and I want to personally thank each and every one of you for attending and making that evening a fantastic celebration! I would also like to thank Kristin Prouty, our District Convener, for coming to help us install our officers and kick off the new season.

With the first event of the year down, it’s time to look forward to the next one. Our Annual Showcase Concert is coming up on Sunday, November 13 at 3 pm with a brief membership meeting at 2 pm prior to the concert.

The concert will be performed on the recently installed Holtkamp organ at the Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior in Green Valley. Janet Tolman, Ji Sun Lee, and I will be treating you all to some early music, some extremely modern music, and a little bit of everything else in between. The program will include works by Walther, Guilain, Tournemire, Vierne, Bach, and our very own Pamela Decker. I hope to see all of you there!

Cheers!

SAAGO CelebratesSAAGO CelebratesSAAGO Celebrates———a recap of the September meeting a recap of the September meeting a recap of the September meeting Report from Doug Leightenheimer, Dean Our program year got off to a wonderful start on Sunday, September 18, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, with over 40 members in attendance. The event began in the church with a brief service of installation of officers. Our new Chaplain and the new Rector of St. Michael’s, Brother David Hedges, served as liturgist, and our District Convener, Kristin Prouty, presided over the installation of officers. Sub-dean Sara Tobe and yours truly were the organists. Following the service, the membership moved to the Smith Parish Center for a time of fellowship before the opening business meeting of the program year. The meeting included reports from the treasurer, board members/coordinators, as well as a greeting from our District Convener, Kristin Prouty. As part of her remarks, Kristin addressed the investigation of the AGO by the Federal Trade Commission. An update from our Executive Director, James Thomashower, can be found on page 6 of the October issue of TAO, and I commend it to you for your reading. New members and guests were recognized as were six past deans who were in attendance; Jeffrey Campbell, Dennis Grannan, Fern Hieb, Lynn Moser, Janet Tolman. Our newest Johnson Memorial Scholarship winners, Chris Blanco and Kevin Seal, also were recognized. Special recognition was given to Russell Baughman who was made an honorary member by the chapter. Goals for the coming year were addressed as were upcoming programs. Membership directories and brochures were distributed, and members were given the opportunity to fill out a survey to express concerns and to offer suggestions and ideas for the chapter. Of special note is that this is our 80th anniversary year, and a celebration is being planned for next April. The evening concluded with a wonderful dinner catered by Chef Andy Bruno. A good time was had by all!

More photos on the next page.

Honorary Member Russell Baughman In recognition of his 66 years as a member of the Southern Arizona Chapter of the AGO, and his seventeen years of service as treasurer, Russell was made an honorary member of the chapter at the opening meeting on September 18. Russell joined the chapter in 1950 when it was a mere thirteen years old. He reflected that dues at the time were only $3.00 per year, and that half of that went to national! Dean Leightenheimer presented a certificate to Russell recognizing him as an honorary member of the chapter. Thank you, Russell, for your wonderful example, and for your many years of devotion to the SAAGO!
