Music fes-tivals leave you with a certain feeling — a cross between

free-spiritedness, rebellion and re! ectiveness. To prepare for the barrage of emotions Dillo Day brings, I’ve compiled some movies to get you in the music-festival mood. Whether they’re cult clas-sics or mainstream titles, these ! icks will put Dillo Day in perspective and inspire your attitude for the big day.

‘PITCH PERFECT’Although it may not have that music festival

feeling, “Pitch Perfect” is one of my favorite mov-ies. It’s hysterical and witty, and the music feels relevant. " e cast’s rendition of “No Diggity” is a personal favorite. Fat Amy, played by Rebel Wilson, is the clear standout of the # lm — few scenes with her didn’t have me in stitches. If you’re looking for something lighthearted and easy to watch, “Pitch Perfect” is it.

‘FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF’Ferris, Cameron and Sloane represent the clas-

sic best friends we all want to hang out with, and their day o$ from school is guaranteed to put you in a carefree and excited mood. “Ferris Bueller’s Day O$ ” isn’t just an ‘%&s classic — it’s a movie every generation can relate to. It’s de# nitely got that summery feel and the plot line is inspired and lighthearted.

‘PIRATE RADIO’“Pirate Radio” is a cult comedy about an illegal

radio station in the North Sea. " e men onboard the ship streaming the contraband music play the tunes of their generation, standing up to a conser-vative U.K. government that wants to limit radio music to solely classical pieces. " e small elements of romance and large amounts of revolution make for a dynamic and inspiring # lm and will leave you feeling rebellious just in time for Dillo Day.

‘ACROSS THE UNIVERSE’" is # lm seems to be a fan favorite, perhaps

because our generation was seemingly raised lis-tening to the tunes of " e Beatles. Jim Sturgess

is the outstanding lead in this # lm, combining beau-tiful vocals with striking acting. The romance between Sturgess’ character and an upper-class Ameri-can is also a strong point of the # lm, and " e Beatles music weaved throughout the movie lends an element of familiarity and nostalgia.

‘ALMOST FAMOUS’I’ve written about this movie before, but I don’t

think it’s overkill if I tell you to watch this ! ick again to get excited for Dillo Day. " is story of a young journalist following a rock band and its groupies has that “cool” factor you look for in movies to watch before a music festival. Kate Hudson plays the e$ ortlessly cool Penny Lane, a hint of inspiration for the Dillo Day atmosphere.

Dillo Day, the one occasion where day drinking is expected,

is quickly approaching. You can throw back a shot or crack open a beer as soon as you wake up, even if it is ' a.m. But drinking from sunup to sundown can be a bit dangerous, especially if you don’t do it right. One important key to drinking is incorporating food into the mix. Here are some of the best foods to munch on as you go through Dillo Day. Fortu-nately, you can easily incorporate alcohol into many of them, so you can still prevent a hangover and uncomfortable vomiting without cutting back on your drinking time.

Let’s start with breakfast. For your alcohol # x, try pouring some vodka into your morning orange juice for a delicious screwdriver. Pair that with beer-infused pancakes — making the pancakes is

as simple as pouring some beer into the batter of your favorite recipe. Experiment and try using cra( beer instead of something like Corona or Heineken. Frying the pancakes will cook away most of the alcohol, but you still get the taste, and they will provide a solid base in your stomach. " row in some eggs and milk to help digest the liquor.

For lunch, get some more protein into your body, which will also make you feel full for a longer period of time. Of course, you will most likely be very busy on Dillo Day and won’t necessarily have time for an elaborate meal. Don’t worry. Grab a hot dog or sausage and cook it in the oven in a beer batter for a delicious, alcohol-infused lunch.

As the day goes on, you will have consumed more alcohol. You will probably be feeling tired or maybe a little sick. It’s important to get some food in your

stomach if you are going to continue drinking. Have a good meal rich in protein or carbohydrates. Make a bourbon-infused barbecue sauce to add to a pork

chop or steak, or add some wine to your fet-tuccine Alfredo sauce and cook up a box

of pasta. A good vegetable to add on the side is asparagus: It helps digest the alcohol in your body.

Of course, you can’t forget about dessert! And there are so many great dessert recipes made from alcohol. A great option is rum cake, com-plete with a butter-and-rum glaze

for the top. What a delicious way to end your Dillo Day.You don’t have to choose between eat-

ing and drinking. Fun alcohol-infused recipes make sure your day is # lled with liquor and they also ensure you’ll wake up feeling not-so-horrible the next day.

ALCOHOLAND FOOD

Dillo Day is the one day of the year when Northwestern # nally acts like the Big Ten school it is. Students all come together to “darty” (day party) and listen to music on the Lake# ll, whether they appreciate the artist or not. If you’re )* or older — or plan on drinking copious amounts of alcohol anyway, which I cannot condone* — this article is for you.

MORNING GLORYWhen you wake up on Dillo Day,

your thoughts will probably jump to that o$ -campus shindig you’re trying to attend and all the friends you want to see. However, you need to take the time to fuel up for the long day ahead of you. Healthy fats such as salmon, avocado and nuts will help line your stomach and assure the drinks you’re downing don’t hit you too fast and knock you out for the day. " ey’ll also help prevent a hangover by giving your body more time to process the toxins in alcohol — something our )*-and-older readers may be concerned with.

SOME LIKE IT HOTTemperature-wise, Dillo Day is as

close to “summer” as it gets here in Chicago, meaning it’s going to be fairly warm (# ngers crossed). Due to the elevated temperature outside and all the physical activity, stay hydrated with water so you don’t embarrassingly pass out on the Lake# ll. During a regular day, you should be drinking about +, ounces of water, so make sure to con-sume just as much on Dillo Day.

ON THE LAKEFILLWhile enjoying all of the “festivities”

Dillo Day has to o$ er, be sure to snack lightly throughout the day. Complex carbohydrates are always a good idea. Sure, they may make it take longer for alcohol to absorb into your blood stream, but do you really want to be that kid who passed out in the middle of the day?

RAGING BULLWhile consuming shady beverages

whipped up in people’s backyards, be sure to avoid ca$ einated mixers. It’s also a good idea to avoid dairy prod-ucts and spicy foods, because they are already di- cult to digest. Adding alco-hol into the equation will just further upset your stomach. Extremely salty food will also make you even thirstier, compelling you to drink more and making the rest of your day a rough one.

A STREETCAR SNACK NAMED DESIRE

Post-Dillo Day, you’ll probably want to snack … and snack you should. Look for foods high in potassium, such as bananas, to replace electrolytes you’re low on. Breakfast food may also be a good option — scrambled eggs are high in protein and taurine, which may help reverse liver damage, and orange juice can boost your blood sugar a( er a long day of drinking. Also do your best to drink plenty of water before bed — it’ll help with tomorrow’s throbbing headache that is sure to ensue.
