Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing areour third generation jamb-mounted,concealed door closers. Their development

owes much to the expertise gained over fortyyears of designing and manufacturing theirsuccessful predecessors, Perko and Perkomatic, but also draws heavily on the innovative designand engineering know-how for which SamuelHeath is renowned.

The Powermatic controlled, concealed door closeroffers the functionality and benefits you wouldexpect from the leading manufacturer of jamb-mounted closers. Powermatic Free Swing, whenconnected to the building’s 24-volt fire alarmsystem, delivers these same advantages with theadded functionality of allowing the door to beoperated manually and left open as desired.

Specifically designed to meet the requirements ofthe European standard for controlled doorclosing devices, BS EN 1154, Powermatic andPowermatic Free Swing incorporate a specialtwin-power. Together with other unique features, this enables the door closer to deliver theperformance demanded by the standard whilstallowing the door closer body to be fitted withinthe door. This ensures that the closer is totallyconcealed when the door is closed.

Such is the efficiency of these mechanisms thatboth door closers can enable a door assembly tomeet relevant United Kingdom accessibilityrequirements.

The door closers’ innovative design has beentranslated into high performance products ofoutstanding reliability through the disciplinedapplication of engineering principles and state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques.

With the vast majority of componentsmanufactured in-house, we are able to exactprecise control over the entire productionprocess. This direct control also ensures ex-stockavailability of the door closers for both small andlarge scale building projects.

The latest computer-controlled machinery assuresmicroscopic accuracy in the production of thedoor closers’ component parts, whilst meticulousquality control throughout all processes, including individual testing of key sub-assembliesand the final product itself, results in productsthat will give years of reliable, maintenance-freeservice deserving of our ten-year guarantee.

Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing not onlymeet the plethora of national and internationalperformance standards that prevail for fire doorsand accessible routes, but also, thanks to theirconcealed nature, offer a number of significanthealth and safety benefits that make them thepreferred choice for many health, care, education, commercial, leisure and hotel projects.See the ‘hidden benefits of concealment’ sectionlater in this brochure for further details.

Specificationconsiderations

There are many factors that need to

be taken into consideration when

choosing a door closer.

Compliance with legislation and

technical performance standards,

covering areas such as fire safety and

accessibility, is obviously vital.

Ensuring that a door closer meets

these requirements and that the

manufacturer is able to substantiate

their claims through independent

certification is a vital part of the

specification process.

One thing you can be certain of is

that Powermatic and Powermatic

Free Swing tick all the right boxes

when it comes to performance.

Page 10: The controlled, concealed door closersconcealeddoorclosers.com/doorclosers/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/R... · Specification considerations There are many factors that need to be taken

Door closers play an essential role in assuringthe safety of a building and its occupants incase of fire. They ensure that the fire door

closes efficiently and correctly, and remains closedagainst its seals.

A number of performance standards and regulationsinfluence the specification and use of door closers incase of fire:-

BS EN 1154The standard provides details on product types, classification by use, test cycles, door width andmass, and corrosion resistance as well as definitions, product performance requirements, test apparatus, test methods and marking of products.

Key features of the standard are the stipulationthat:-

• Door closers used on fire doors should be ofpower size 3 and above.

• Door closers should complete 500,000 openingand closing cycles without loss of performance orsignificant wear.

• A door closer representative of its model shallhave been incorporated in a door assembly thathas satisfied the appropriate criteria of a fire test. The test shall have been on a full-sized assembly inaccordance with BS EN 1634-1.

Both Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing arerated power size 3 and comply with all of theserequirements.

BS EN 1634-1BS EN 1634-1 is a Europe-wide standard designedto provide more realistic measurement of aproduct's performance in the case of fire.

Fire resistance testing of doors is covered by BS EN1634-1. It is against this standard that Powermaticand Powermatic Free Swing have beentested/approved by an independent laboratory andproved to meet the requirements for one-hour andhalf-hour fire doors, making them suitable for awide variety of fire door applications.

Fire safety

10 SPECIFICATION CONSIDERATIONS

BS EN 1155This standard specifies requirements for electricallypowered, free swing and hold-open devicesclassifying products according to use, test cycles, door mass, fire resistance, safety and corrosionresistance.

Powermatic Free Swing complies with the standard’srequirements.

Page 11: The controlled, concealed door closersconcealeddoorclosers.com/doorclosers/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/R... · Specification considerations There are many factors that need to be taken

BS 476The British Standard for fire resistance testing, BS476 is still widely used in the industry.

As with BS EN 1634-1, it covers fire resistancetesting of doors and, again, Powermatic hassuccessfully completed testing by an independentlaboratory and proved to meet the standard’srequirements for one-hour and half-hour fire doors, making them suitable for a wide variety of fire doorapplications.

CE markBS EN 1154 and BS EN 1155 are regarded as‘harmonised’ European standards and compliance witheither, supported by suitable evidence, allows theapplication of the CE mark.

As closers for fire/smoke doors have a critical safetyfunction, application of the CE mark requiresindependent verification by a notified certification body. This involves initial type-testing of the product to BS EN1154 and/or BS EN 1155, inspection of themanufacturer’s factory production control andcontinuing surveillance and approval of the factoryproduction control system.

Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing havesuccessfully completed independent fire testing/approvalto BS EN 1634-1 for one-hour and half-hour, latchedand unlatched fire doors.

The manufacturing processes and systems used in theirproduction comply with BS EN ISO 9001.

As a result of their performance, durability and quality, both Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing carry theCE mark.

Building RegulationsUnited Kingdom Building Regulations recommendthird party fire test certification (ApprovedDocument B for England and Wales, Section 2 inScotland and Part S in Northern Ireland).

Powermatic has been independently tested andcertified for use on fire doors by Certifire (seebelow).

CertifireRecognised by regulatory authorities in the UK andoverseas, Certifire requires:-

• Door closers to have completed successful firedoor tests.

• BS EN ISO 9001 certification.• Independent audit testing against relevant British

and European standards.• Comprehensive field of application document

based on carefully chosen tests.

The additional assurance provided by thePowermatic certification under the Certifire schemegives specifiers, enforcement authorities andbuilding managers even greater confidence in thespecification and use of the door closer.

12 SPECIFICATION CONSIDERATIONS

The Equality Act imposes a duty on serviceproviders and managers of premises to ensurethat people with disabilities have access to

the benefits and facilities the premises offer. Thismeans that any physical barrier which might preventpeople of differing abilities from accessing servicesshould be removed.

Additionally, for educational establishments, theSpecial Education Needs and Disability Act (SENDA)imposes similar requirements and states that thereshould be an accessibility strategy in place fordisabled pupils.

Where door closers are concerned, the key area ofconsideration is the force required to open the door.In the United Kingdom, this area of performance fordoor closers is stipulated in BS 8300: 2009 and theregional Building Regulations; ApprovedDocument M (ADM) in England and Wales,Section 4 in Scotland and Part R in Northern Ireland. These regulations state that, when measured at theleading edge of the door, the force required to opena manually operated door shall be notmore than:-

(a) 30N from 0° (the door in the closed position)to 30° open, and(b) 22.5N from 30° to 60° of the opening cycle

It should be noted that no manual door closer can,in itself, claim compliance with this regulation as therequirement applies to the complete doorset, fittedin situ. Other influences, such as width of door,smoke/acoustic/brush seals, hinges, etc. also need tobe taken into account.

SPECIFICATION CONSIDERATIONS 13

Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing have aunique design that employs two mechanisms;on opening the door from the closed

position, and following the initial compression, theenergy is held primed in the first mechanism, butalso kept isolated until required on the closing andlatching action. This ensures a low opening force inthe initial stages of opening. The secondcompression mechanism is used to close the doorfrom greater opening angles.

The graph on this page clearly shows that, after theinitial 4 degrees of door opening, the opening forcesactually reduce and the efficiency remains constantfor the first 60 degrees. This is in contrast to somepopular door closing solutions where the openingforces required actually increase after the initial 4degrees of opening.

The two-stage mechanism used in Powermatic andPowermatic Free Swing satisfies bothBS EN 1154 and also aids compliance with BuildingRegulation requirements for opening forces.

The hiddenbenefits ofconcealment

In addition to compliance with

relevant legislation and performance

standards, door closer selection relies

heavily on the situation in which it is

intended to be used.

Additional factors will have a

significant influence on the type of

door closer that is chosen. These

might include aesthetics, safety, anti-

ligature requirements, hygiene,

reliability, sound insulation, economy

and product support.

In all of these aspects, you will find

Powermatic and Powermatic Free

Swing to be eminently suitable for

your project’s needs.

16 THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF CONCEALMENT

The aesthetics of any project are close to theheart of every architect and interior designer, and they are becoming increasingly important

in many health and care projects where a homely, less institutional atmosphere is desirable.

Ensuring that a door is free from devices that candetrimentally affect its appearance, as well asinterfere with the overall finish and ambience of theinterior, is a key part of creating the aesthetics thatare envisioned and desired.

Whether for appearance or to enhance theenvironment, you will find the fact that Powermaticand Powermatic Free Swing are invisible when thedoor is closed, and extremely unobtrusive whenopen, a real benefit for all types of project.

In addition, the lack of surface-mounted controlarms and boxes makes Powermatic and PowermaticFree Swing particularly suitable in situations wheredoor clearance is restricted, such as hotelguestrooms and ante-rooms where 90° reveals areso often found.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF CONCEALMENT 17

In addition to the safety implications of a doorfailing to function because the door closer hasbeen vandalised (see page 19), the reduction of

risk, and avoidance of litigation, is a keyconsideration for many designers and buildingmanagers.

Reducing the risk of doors and door furniture beingused as a point of ligature is vital in psychiatrichealth and secure accommodation facilities, but therisk is also present in many other buildings.Anecdotal evidence suggests that at least oneeducation authority has recognised this risk andinstalled Powermatic door closers to minimise it.

Assessing the significance of this risk is a matter ofprofessional judgement, but where present,Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing can make avaluable contribution towards its reduction.

The door closers' total concealment when the dooris closed plays a vital role in anti-ligature situations, but the benefit is enhanced by the fact that thedoor closers can be installed at a height which islow enough to virtually remove the risk of theclosers being used as a suspension point.

When combined with continuous hinges, the doorclosers’ link rods are completely obscured from theopening face side of the door, further reducing risk.

Safety/Anti-ligature

Page 18: The controlled, concealed door closersconcealeddoorclosers.com/doorclosers/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/R... · Specification considerations There are many factors that need to be taken

Anything which makes an environmentcleaner and more hygienic is welcome in allsectors of our society, particularly

healthcare.

Powermatic’s and Powermatic Free Swing'sconcealment as well as their lack of significantexposed and horizontal surfaces ensure that theyattract and retain very little detritus and potentiallyharmful bacteria which can be associated withsurface-mounted hardware.

Furthermore, their low mounting position within thedoor makes them very easy to inspect, reach andclean, simplifying hygiene and housekeepingregimes and making the world a cleaner place.

18 THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF CONCEALMENT

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF CONCEALMENT 19

As mentioned, various regulations alreadyimpose requirements with respect to thereliability of the door closers.

There is one further consideration that cansignificantly enhance a door closer’s ability toprovide continuously reliable service and that is thereduced risk of vandalism.

There is probably no truer adage than ‘out of sight, out of mind’ when it comes to petty acts ofvandalism, whether undertaken deliberately oroccurring as a result of horseplay. Place somethingin full view, particularly in public buildings andeducational establishments, and it will almostcertainly become a target for malicious ormischievous acts.

A damaged door closer will, more often than not, result in a total failure of the door. In the case of afire, the consequences can be inconvenient at bestand catastrophic at worst.

Being totally concealed when the door is closed,Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing significantlyreduce the risk of vandalism, thereby enhancing thereliability of the entire doorset.

Product application

Suitable for a wide variety of

situations where discreet, controlled,

automatic closing is required,

Powermatic and Powermatic Free

Swing have become the preferred

choice for specifiers and decision

makers in a wide variety of projects

in both private and public sectors of

the industry.

In addition to their exceptional

performance and durability

characteristics, the fact that

Powermatic and Powermatic Free

Swing are completely invisible when

the door is closed, and particularly

unobtrusive when open, means that

the door closers deliver a number of

specific benefits that meet the special

requirements of projects in key areas

of application.

Page 28: The controlled, concealed door closersconcealeddoorclosers.com/doorclosers/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/R... · Specification considerations There are many factors that need to be taken

28 PRODUCT APPLICATION

Powermatic is specified and fitted by a numberof local authorities and housing associationswho recognise the benefits that the door

closers bring in terms of safety, reliability andreduced maintenance.

The fact that Powermatic and Powermatic FreeSwing are completely out of sight when the door isclosed, and not easily visible when open, significantly reduces the opportunity for the closerto be vandalised. This offers significant benefits, both to those responsible for the maintenance andupkeep of properties as well as for the residentsthemselves.

A damaged door closer can prevent the doorfunctioning altogether, not simply failing to closeautomatically, though this in itself can causeproblems. A fire door that fails to function is, atbest, an inconvenience and, at worst, potentiallyfatal.

Social housing

Add to this the cost of constantly replacingdamaged door closers and the appeal ofPowermatic and Powermatic Free Swing to thesocial housing sector becomes clear.

Page 29: The controlled, concealed door closersconcealeddoorclosers.com/doorclosers/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/R... · Specification considerations There are many factors that need to be taken

PRODUCT APPLICATION 29

The healthcare sector draws a broad and variedarray of benefits from the use of Powermaticand Powermatic Free Swing, most of which

derive from the specifics of each application:-

Safety and anti-ligatureIn addition to the implications for safety that avandalised door closer represents (see ‘Education’ onpage 33), specialist areas of the health sector, suchas psychiatric care, demand that particular attentionbe paid to the safety of vulnerable people.

Reduced, or anti-ligature solutions are vital in manysuch areas, and Powermatic and Powermatic FreeSwing make a valuable contribution in reducing theopportunity for self-harm. The door closers’ totalconcealment when the door is closed is an obviousfactor in its anti-ligature credentials, but particularlyapposite is the fact that Powermatic andPowermatic Free Swing can be mounted within300mm of the bottom of the door, a height atwhich effective ligature is considered impossible inthe majority of circumstances.

Hygiene/cleanlinessWith minimal surface exposure to the environmentPowermatic and Powermatic Free Swing attract verylittle detritus when in service. This feature and theirlow mounting height make cleaning procedures andinspection regimes quick and easy.

Well-beingIn frontline health services there is broad recognitionthat providing a homely, less clinical atmosphere aidsrecovery and enhances the lives of the service’sconsumers.

Using Powermatic or Powermatic Free Swingremoves the unsightly mechanical controls that areso often associated with commercial projects, making for a more pleasant, comfortable and lessinstitutionalised environment.

Health & anti-ligature

30 PRODUCT APPLICATION

The need for residential care facilities to makeadequate provision for fire safety is widelyaccepted, with the use of door closers, and

free swing versions in particular, beingrecommended in the government’s document: ‘Fire safety risk assessment: residential carepremises’.

Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing are perfectfor use in residential care premises for fire and non-fire door applications.

Especially welcome in care homes is the fact thatboth door closers are totally concealed when thedoor is closed and particularly unobtrusive when thedoor is open. The lack of visible, unsightly controlarms and mechanical housings that come withordinary door closers facilitates a cleaner, moreaesthetically pleasing and less institutionalisedappearance to the interiors, imbuing a more homelyfeel, enhancing comfort and improving the overallambience of the home.

In addition to an improved living and workingenvironment for residents and staff, PowermaticFree Swing is particularly well-suited to satisfying theneeds of care homes as it allows doors to operatemanually, with no added resistance to access, andleft open as desired.

Linked to the building’s 24-volt fire alarm system,Powermatic Free Swing’s manual mode is easily setby opening the door to its maximum. At this point, the closing mechanism is held primed. Automaticdoor closing takes place at a controlled rate whenthe fire alarm is activated, when the power isswitched off or when there is a power failure.

Care

Page 31: The controlled, concealed door closersconcealeddoorclosers.com/doorclosers/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/R... · Specification considerations There are many factors that need to be taken

PRODUCT APPLICATION 31

As with any building that is open to thepublic on a regular basis, hotels are, tovarying degrees, subject to many of the

considerations mentioned in the sections onEducation and Health.

However, Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swinghave gained favour in the hotel sector thanks mainlyto the enhanced aesthetics that their concealmentbrings, both to the door itself and interior décor as awhole. The lack of surface-mounted mechanicaldevices enables the designer to retain a clean, unhindered appearance to the door, and a look thatwill not detract from the desired visual effect of thedecorative scheme.

From a practical perspective, tests have shown thatPowermatic and Powermatic Free Swing offer anadvantage over other concealed closing devices when itcomes to sound insulation, as their installation requiresminimal morticing of the door, ensuring that the door’ssound insulation properties are retained.

Furthermore, the absence of protruding mechanicalcontrol arms and surface-mounted boxes meansthat Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing offeran ideal solution to situations where door clearanceis restricted, such as with 90° reveals.

In addition, should the door closers requireadjustment, their convenient position within thedoor facilitates quick and easy fine-tuning,unhindered by the restricted headroom that is socommonly experienced in guestroom reveals.

32 PRODUCT APPLICATION

Performance, reliability and return oninvestment are all boxes capably ticked byPowermatic and Powermatic Free Swing

when it comes to commercial applications thanks tothe door closers’ features and benefits, whilst a ten-year guarantee offers ultimate assurance of itsdurability.

Such considerations are usually sufficient to makePowermatic and Powermatic Free Swing the firstchoice for commercial building projects, but onearea in which the door closers garner particularfavour with designers and their clients is in raisedfloor situations: Raised floors make it costly for adesigner to opt for a floor mounted door closingdevice. Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swingprovide the ideal solution.

Whilst not a risk immediately associated withmainstream educational establishments, the risk ofdoor closers being used as a point of ligature mightalso be a consideration. Recent anecdotal evidencesuggests that at least one local authority hasreplaced overhead door closers throughout allschools with Powermatic to reduce the risk of self-harm.

Concealment and unobtrusiveness ensure thatPowermatic and Powermatic Free Swing removemany of these temptations and opportunities, reducing costs and enhancing the comfort andsafety of a building’s occupants.

Whether malicious or the result of amisguided action, the risk of damagebeing caused to a door closer is

particularly high in most educational establishments.

The costs of repair and replacement, which canextend beyond that of merely replacing the doorcloser to repairing or replacing the door itself, canbe considerable.

However, there are other, more severe consequencesof a damaged door closer which transcend financialconsiderations; a damaged door closer will not onlyfail to perform its primary function correctly, but canrender the door useless. The result may only beinconvenience, but in the case of a fire, thepotential for disaster is easy to appreciate.

The protruding arms and control boxes that are soevident with surface-mounted door closers canpresent a very tempting target for the would-bevandal or prankster.

Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing lendthemselves particularly well to heritage andrefurbishment projects where modern fire

safety and convenience features need to beintroduced, but where the retention of important, often historically significant, features and finishes isvital.

Naturally, the fact that Powermatic and PowermaticFree Swing are completely concealed when the dooris closed, and unobtrusive when the door is open, makes the door closers ideal from an aestheticviewpoint, but they also deliver other key practicalfeatures above and beyond their impressiveperformance characteristics.

Shaped door heads and the excavation of floorspose insurmountable challenges for overhead doorclosers and floor springs respectively. Standardoverhead door closers cannot be fitted to shapeddoor heads and the excavation of floors to

Matching with other hardware

Hold-open devicesPowermatic is particularly well-suited for use withseparate electrically-powered hold-open devices andcan often provide an easier and more economicsolution than other closers thanks to its mid-heightlocation within the door.

Best practice for the installation of wall-mountedelectro-magnetic hold-open devices stipulates thatthe device should be positioned at a point whichminimises stress on the door assembly. Ideally, thehold-open device should be mounted at the samelevel as the door closer to avoid imposing twistingforces on the door assembly.
