DEEPINGS RUFC OVERWHELMED BY SUPPORT FOR CLUB

MAKEOVERDeepings Rugby Club is celebrating a successful weekend of hard work, thanks to the volunteers who came in great numbers to lend a helping hand to the club’s RBS RugbyForce Weekend. Everyone worked together to help the club prepare for the 2012/13 season by repairing, tidying and making all as part of the RBS RugbyForce Weekend programme.

RBS RugbyForce 2012 provided clubs across the UK with tools and resources, to help them plan and deliver their own activities. The programme is a cornerstone of RBS’s sponsorship of the RBS 6 Nations Championship, seeing RBS support the sport at every level.

DEEPING SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB -

SUMMER BALLDeepings Sports and Social Club recently hosted their 1st Annual Summer Ball, at Outgang Road in Market Deeping. The organisers organised a stunning marquee to be sited on the cricket outfield, accommodating 200 guests. Everyone enjoyed a three course meal, with entertainment by The Kommitments. DJ Michael Dean, from The Box, provided the disco. During the evening a silent auction and tombola were held to raise money for the two chosen charities, Parkinsons UK Bourne Branch and The Deeping Men’s Group.

The sum of £2,500 was raised on the night and the Summer Ball committee would like to thank all sponsors and guests for supporting the ball.

CASTLE COTTAGETony Robinson and his crew from Chanel 4’s Time Team stumbled

upon a hidden gem in Oakham in June. The Castle Cottage Cafe

is tucked away behind the red door in Church Passage, but the

super sleuth time detectives had no problem in unearthing the

perfect venue for a party following their archaeological project in

Oakham. The Time Team was in Oakham at a ‘dig’ to investigate

12th Century remains inside Oakham Castle. The crew were

excavating for three days and made some exciting discoveries

including a 13th century horseshoe.

ALTERNATIVES - STAMFORD’S

PREGNANCY ADVICE CENTRE AND MORE… “Offering confidential, caring, impartial, non-directive and expert support from trained advisors”

Since they opened our doors in July 2009, Alternative have seen over three hundred clients in a variety of situations; ages ranging from 13 to mid sixties for a number of reasons from unexpected pregnancies to pregnancy testing to sexual health advice. Alternatives also offer post abortion and baby loss counseling. Working in partnership with referral agencies (local GPs, health visitors, midwives) they are able to signpost to further services as appropriate.

Recently, Alternatives also ran a week of tutorials at New College Stamford exploring relationships with students. This allowed discussion and debate with students around relationships. The work is undertaken in partnership with Stamford’s SureStart Children’s Centre.

Alternatives vision is to provide help and support to women and their partners in the Stamford area who find themselves dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. To reach out to women, to partners and husbands to provide a safe, confidential environment where any person can access unbiased advice and information and talk through their options with trained advisors.

Open two days a week - Monday and Thursday for appointments and drop-ins. The mobile phone is manned 24/7 and appointments can be made out of opening hours.

HARLEYS DINER ROCKS MARKET DEEPING

Harleys Diner in Market Deeping hosted the first Trans- Atlantic Harley Rocks, Biker Party in the UK to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Kegal Harley Davidson in Rockford Illinois USA.

300 invited UK guests rocked the night away on Saturday Night at the same time as Kegal Harley Davidson hosted 4000 customers and friends with a BBQ and Live Bands in the afternoon.

The UK Harley Rocks event was co-ordinated by Cellet Travel on behalf of Rockford Illinois Visitors Bureau to promote tourism to America and Illinois in particular.

The evening started with a “Rolling Thunder” cavalcade of 100 Harley Davidson Motorcycles and other vehicles from Stamford to Market Deeping. Harley Davidson Motorcycle Clubs from throughout the UK attended this event to celebrate Kegal Harley Davidson’s special day and demonstrate that American style motorcycling is alive and well in the UK.

As the Bikes roared into town, Cheerleaders from the local Ministry of Dance School welcomed them into town and add a touch of Americana. Guests then tucked into an authentic American Style BBQ and sampled a wide range of specially imported Hand Crafted American Beers to give them a taste of “Real America”

The event also raised £150 to contribute to the term fund raising efforts for Afghan Heroes.

I wanted to go along and see for myself how the restaurant had been improved and to sample their new menu.

We were greeted by a waitress called Debbie, who was lovely and really made us feel welcome and that nothing was going to be too much trouble.

After sitting with a drink in the bar, we were shown to our table. There was a party of 14 in the restaurant that evening, but this did not detract from the service and attention we received.

After perusing the menu my partner Steve and I were immediately attracted to the taster menu, where you got to sample 3 starters, 3 main courses and 3 desserts – perfect! Our friends opted for the al la carte option, which had a varied selection of dishes, such as - Beer Battered Hake with triple cooked chips, Surf and Turf, BBQ Rack

of Ribs, Potato Gnocchi with Spiced Chicken Breast on Pea Puree as well as vegetarian options and a superb grill menu too. With a childrens menu from £3.95 it is also a great place for families to enjoy superb cooked food. You have to leave a little room for dessert too, the difficulty will be deciding which one to have; Orange Crème Brûlée, Apple and Cinnamon Crumble, cheese board? The list goes on.

The menu had been well thought out, using produce that is sourced locally, which is what a lot of chefs aim for, but do not always achieve. Craig Sampson, the headchef at the Angel is totally committed to using local farms and businesses for his ingredients to prepare the best dishes.

The Angel Hotel also has function rooms available for up to 150 guests, a funky cocktail bar which is ideal for a smaller gathering and can be hired exclusively for private functions.

FIRST RESPONDERS HONOURED WITH QUEEN’S DIAMOND

JUBILEE MEDALTwo volunteer First Responders in the Deepings were

among the thousands nationwide that have been

recognised for their service with the presentation of a

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal after completing more

than five years operational service “where they face the

prospect of dealing with emergencies as part of their

conditions of service”.

Peter Ward and Dave Book are the longest serving front

line members of the Deepings First Responders group of

L.I.V.E.S. (Lincolnshire Integrated Emergency Service).

The organisation, which is attached to EMAS (East

Midlands Ambulance Service) has 60+ groups throughout

Lincolnshire that provide a rapid response call-out service

to most ambulance related 999 calls within specific, local

boundaries. The Deepings group has provided cover to all

of the villages in a 2 mile radius of Market Deeping for 10

years now with one or two volunteers available on-call from

7pm to 7am every night of the year (in this area the day

shift being covered by Co-responders from the Retained Fire

Service).

Stamford Foodbank is based at All Saints’ & St John’s Church Centre, although all of the Churches in Stamford are pulling together for this great cause.

The Churches involved are - Church Baptist, Life Church, Salvation Army, St Mary & Augustine’s RC, St George’s, St Martin’s, St Mary’s, United Reformed.

How a Foodbank worksFoodbank is an organisation which provides a safety net of 3 days emergency food for people in a financial crisis. Only people with a genuine need of assistance will benefit from this charity, and there is a network of frontline care professionals, trained to identify those people in need.

How you can helpSchools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to the Foodbank at various collection points around the town.

Supermarket collections are one of the main ways that food is donated, and you will find a shopping trolley at the entrance/exit of the Sainsbury’s store in Stamford, with a list of what food they need most. All they ask is that you purchase one or two extra items within your weekly shop, to give to this worthy cause.

Clients receive foodFoodbank clients bring their voucher to a Foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea/coffee with cake/biscuits and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.

Foodbank also run a rural delivery service, which takes emergency food boxes to clients living in rural areas who possibly cannot get to a foodbank.

After all our constant hard work each month, making sure we produce a fabulous magazine for you to read, we decided it was time for some serious R&R for the Scene team. We, therefore decided to head to The Olde Barn at Marston, just north of Grantham.

This charming rustic Spa hotel is set in beautiful countryside and the character and charm of the place is very inviting. We all booked a massage and some of us went for facials, whilst the others had manicures and pedicures using OPI products – it was pure luxury!

The pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room really added to the experience and meant we could all totally relax and unwind. For the more energetic there is a fully equipped gym available, but we were there to chill and chat, so the treadmill was ignored on this occasion.

After a delicious lunch, we continued with our treatments, in between relaxing by the pool. It really was a great day out and only 30 minutes north of Stamford on the A1. We all detoured into Downtown to do some shopping on the way home, which was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

BOCCIA

Boccia is a target sport that tests muscle control and accuracy,

demanding extreme skill and concentration at the highest level.

Believed to have Ancient Greek origins, Boccia is a tough

test of nerve, tactics and skill. Played on a rectangular court

by individuals, pairs and teams, the sport offers both tension

and excitement, as athletes aim to land balls close to a target

ball, across a series of demanding ends. The sport is similar to

boules or petanque and is played competitively in more than 50

countries worldwide.

Boccia is played by wheelchair athletes with cerebral palsy and

related locomotor conditions, with players required to be in a

seated position within a throwing box at one end of the playing

court. A classification system ensures an even playing field for

athletes to compete against others with similar disabilities.

GOAL BALL

Played competitively in more than 100 countries, Goalball

is one of the most popular Paralympic sports. Since it was

developed as a rehabilitation activity for injured soldiers

returning from World War II, Goalball has spread around the

world. Played by visually impaired athletes using a ball with

bells inside, it is among the most exciting team sports on

the Paralympic programme.

Did you know?

Athletes wear blackout masks (eyeshades) on the playing

court, which allows persons with varying degrees of vision

to participate together.

The ball reaches speeds of 60 kilometres per hour – players

literally put their bodies on the line to stop the fast-moving

ball crossing the goal line.

The aim is to score by rolling the ball at speed into the

opposition’s goal, while the opposition attempts to block

the ball with their bodies. Spectators must be quiet during

play so that players can hear the ball (and each other), but

they are free to cheer when a goal is scored. The team that

scores the most goals is the winner.

HISTORY OF THE PARALYMPIC GAMES

In 1948, as the Olympic Games took place

in London, the seeds for future Paralympic

Games were sown. History of the Paralympic

Games Pioneering neurologist Sir Ludwig

Guttmann organised a sports competition at

Stoke Mandeville Hospital to coincide with

the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. He

had already seen the rehabilitative power of

sport for spinalinjured World War II veterans

and wanted to build on this experience.

Guttmann then continued to repeat the event

every year at about the same time. In 1949, he

is reported to have said in his opening speech

that ‘maybe one day there would be Olympics

for the disabled’. Three years later, in 1952,

Dutch athletes joined the event, creating the

first international games for athletes with a

disability.

In 1960, Rome became the first Host City to use

its Olympic venues for the Paralympic Games,

with 400 athletes from 23 nations participating.

The first Paralympic Winter Games took place in

Örnsköldsvik, Sweden in 1976.

By the time of the Sydney 2000 Games, 18

sports were part of the programme, with

Paralympic Sailing and Wheelchair Rugby

making their debut. The Barcelona 1992 Games

featured 3,021 athletes from 82 nations. The

London 2012 Paralympic Games will feature 20

different sports with as many as 4,200 athletes

from 150 nations taking part.

TORCH RELAYThe Paralympic Torch relay takes place from 24 – 29 August.

Building on the traditional Torch Relay format, the relay begins in

LondononFriday24AugustwiththelightingofEngland’sflame.

The United Kingdom’s other three capital cities – Greater Belfast,

CardiffandEdinburgh–will then lightaflameoneachof the

followingdays,atspecialFlameLightingevents.Onceaflame

has been lit, it will visit local community groups and key locations

“Don’t Run before you can Walk!” or

“ Listen to your Body!”

The Olympics can’t help but inspire us to

have a go or increase our exercise levels.

Healthcare professionals encourage daily

exercise and I am no different. However

don’t run before you can walk!

Don’t try to run a marathon without entering

into a structured training programme and

warming up and cooling down pre and post

exercise. Muscles and joints are most vulnerable

when asked to work in a way we haven’t before

or at least not for a long while.

Build exercise regimes up slowly. 20 mins

daily is a good place to start. Begin gently but

enough to raise your heart rate; brisk walking,

jogging, swimming or gardening. Be aware of

your limitations. If you carry excess weight,

start by walking, building gradually and loose

some weight first before you sign up for

exercise classes that look like such fun.

If you start exercising and end up in pain, listen

to your body. It may go away with time but is

just as likely to return unless you get it sorted.

It is difficult for the lay-person to identify

whether pain originates from joints, muscles or

both so my advice would be play it safe. Use

an ice pack rather than heat, especially when

dealing with back pain.

WILDCATSWildcats Theatre School are getting ready for an exciting new school year in September, when they open the doors to their new Academy building.

The premises, in St Peters Hill, Stamford will become home to the Wildcats - and all Stamford based classes and activities will be based from the venue. It will also host the new Wildcats Post 16 Academy - a full time two year course working towards the BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre). Students at the Theatre School work towards LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams in Musical Theatre, Acting and Verse and Prose. Viking invasion – with Katie (aged 10)In June I was invited to visit the Peterborough Museum for

the official opening of the Viking Exhibition. I really enjoy

going to museums where I can try things out, play games

and feel like I have been transported back in time. At the

exhibition, I played a Viking game about bartering with

my Mum and also tried loading a model ship with cargo

(without losing any into the sea!). If also got to stand at

the front of a Viking ship trying to sail it across the North

Sea whilst imagining warrior battles and adventure. The

museum is on my Summer ‘to do’ list, so I might see you

there!

And who can forget good old Debenhams? The giant of the high-street ensures the best of the catwalk comes to you. Jasper Conran’s nautical inspired trends for Debenhams (J by Jasper Conran) give a ‘New England’ feel with miniature chinos, cardigans and Breton T’s for a classic lookthatsuitsbothboysandgirls.‘Butterfly’,byMatthewWilliamson, plays on the eponymous name with sweet girly prints for the younger age range, promoting candyfloss-cute dresses and tops.

All of the high street stores, from H&M to the Debenhams collections, are available online so there really is no excuse for not making sure the little angels look fabulous this summer – although, make sure they don’t outshine the very fashionable you!

staying on home turf, the high-

street has ensured that, this

summer, the kids are looking just

as good as the adults!


MOTORING

The Vauxhall Insignia needs better

wing mirrors. They’re just too small

and narrow to give you a confident

view - especially when changing lanes

on motorways. The other small niggle

is the steering wheel. It’s big enough

to belong in a bus. But these minor

issues are eclipsed by the motor’s

merits.

For a start, the Insignia is a good

looking estate (Sports Tourer in

today’s parlance). It comes loaded

with equipment; it’s practical; it’s

comfortable, and it’s satisfying to

drive. But the model on test here - the

BiTurbo SRi Sports Tourer - is not just

the usual griffin labelled, load-lugging,

mile-muncher. Why? Because under

the bonnet, Vauxhall has shoehorned

in its most commanding diesel engine

ever. It produces 192 bhp and 295 lb/

ft of torque, and yet CO2 emissions

are only 134 g/km.

The heady, twin-sequential

turbocharged oil-burner is based on

the existing 1956 cc unit that powers

key models in the Insignia, Astra

and Zafira Tourer range. However,

in BiTurbo form it delivers an extra

34.5 bhp and a significant 37 lb/ft of

further ‘get-up-and-go’. The result for

the Sports Tourer is 0-60 mph in 8.4

THERE ARE many things I like about this car and just a couple of tiny things I don’t. Let’s get the grumbles out of the way first.

Finally, thanks to a package of eco

Stop across the range – the Insignia

BiTurbo Sports Tourer manages to

achieve a combined 55.4 mpg. This

is the last piece of the jigsaw to

make the car a great all-rounder. It’s

economical and spacious enough to be

the main family car; its emissions are

low enough to make it an affordable

yet very smart business motor, and, of

course, the potency of its engine will

bring out the devil in you when you feel

the need for speed.

The Great Migration

A Safari is never complete without witnessing one of the most

spectacular phenomenon’s that is forever the subject of books

& documentaries, the annual migration from the Serengeti

in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. The main spectacle

takes place during July & August each year when hoards of

wildebeests, zebras and gazelles make the 500 mile trip with

the pinnacle being the excitement of the river crossings. Also

seen are elephants, black rhinos, buffalos, hartebeests, hippos

and crocodiles, which all in all make for a breath-taking sight.

Outside of these months you can still witness the migration as

the herds move around the plains of Tanzania’s Serengeti.

of their home to fund care, with the home being sold to pay off the debts after

the elderly person has died.
