The Olympics continue until 12 August. If you missed

our guide to the games in the July edition, then you

can view in online at:

http://www.issuu.com/the_scene_magazine

This month we have featured the Paralympic Games,

learn about sports exclusive to those games.

We have a fabulous giveaway too this month, to win a

DEEPINGS RUFC OVERWHELMED BY SUPPORT FOR CLUB

MAKEOVERDeepings Rugby Club is celebrating a successful weekend of hard work, thanks to the volunteers who came in great numbers to lend a helping hand to the club’s RBS RugbyForce Weekend. Everyone worked together to help the club prepare for the 2012/13 season by repairing, tidying and making all as part of the RBS RugbyForce Weekend programme.

RBS RugbyForce 2012 provided clubs across the UK with tools and resources, to help them plan and deliver their own activities. The programme is a cornerstone of RBS’s sponsorship of the RBS 6 Nations Championship, seeing RBS support the sport at every level.

DEEPING SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB -

SUMMER BALLDeepings Sports and Social Club recently hosted their 1st Annual Summer Ball, at Outgang Road in Market Deeping. The organisers organised a stunning marquee to be sited on the cricket outfield, accommodating 200 guests. Everyone enjoyed a three course meal, with entertainment by The Kommitments. DJ Michael Dean, from The Box, provided the disco. During the evening a silent auction and tombola were held to raise money for the two chosen charities, Parkinsons UK Bourne Branch and The Deeping Men’s Group.

The sum of £2,500 was raised on the night and the Summer Ball committee would like to thank all sponsors and guests for supporting the ball.

CASTLE COTTAGETony Robinson and his crew from Chanel 4’s Time Team stumbled

upon a hidden gem in Oakham in June. The Castle Cottage Cafe

is tucked away behind the red door in Church Passage, but the

super sleuth time detectives had no problem in unearthing the

perfect venue for a party following their archaeological project in

Oakham. The Time Team was in Oakham at a ‘dig’ to investigate

12th Century remains inside Oakham Castle. The crew were

excavating for three days and made some exciting discoveries

including a 13th century horseshoe.

HARLEYS DINER ROCKS MARKET DEEPING

Harleys Diner in Market Deeping hosted the first Trans- Atlantic Harley Rocks, Biker Party in the UK to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Kegal Harley Davidson in Rockford Illinois USA.

300 invited UK guests rocked the night away on Saturday Night at the same time as Kegal Harley Davidson hosted 4000 customers and friends with a BBQ and Live Bands in the afternoon.

The UK Harley Rocks event was co-ordinated by Cellet Travel on behalf of Rockford Illinois Visitors Bureau to promote tourism to America and Illinois in particular.

The evening started with a “Rolling Thunder” cavalcade of 100 Harley Davidson Motorcycles and other vehicles from Stamford to Market Deeping. Harley Davidson Motorcycle Clubs from throughout the UK attended this event to celebrate Kegal Harley Davidson’s special day and demonstrate that American style motorcycling is alive and well in the UK.

As the Bikes roared into town, Cheerleaders from the local Ministry of Dance School welcomed them into town and add a touch of Americana. Guests then tucked into an authentic American Style BBQ and sampled a wide range of specially imported Hand Crafted American Beers to give them a taste of “Real America”

The event also raised £150 to contribute to the term fund raising efforts for Afghan Heroes.

I wanted to go along and see for myself how the restaurant had been improved and to sample their new menu.

We were greeted by a waitress called Debbie, who was lovely and really made us feel welcome and that nothing was going to be too much trouble.

After sitting with a drink in the bar, we were shown to our table. There was a party of 14 in the restaurant that evening, but this did not detract from the service and attention we received.

After perusing the menu my partner Steve and I were immediately attracted to the taster menu, where you got to sample 3 starters, 3 main courses and 3 desserts – perfect! Our friends opted for the al la carte option, which had a varied selection of dishes, such as - Beer Battered Hake with triple cooked chips, Surf and Turf, BBQ Rack

of Ribs, Potato Gnocchi with Spiced Chicken Breast on Pea Puree as well as vegetarian options and a superb grill menu too. With a childrens menu from £3.95 it is also a great place for families to enjoy superb cooked food. You have to leave a little room for dessert too, the difficulty will be deciding which one to have; Orange Crème Brûlée, Apple and Cinnamon Crumble, cheese board? The list goes on.

The menu had been well thought out, using produce that is sourced locally, which is what a lot of chefs aim for, but do not always achieve. Craig Sampson, the headchef at the Angel is totally committed to using local farms and businesses for his ingredients to prepare the best dishes.

The Angel Hotel also has function rooms available for up to 150 guests, a funky cocktail bar which is ideal for a smaller gathering and can be hired exclusively for private functions.

Do not miss out on the hilarious Angel Comedy Nights – the next one is 24th August 8pm.

Garden SceneBy Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

You could say that gardening is in my blood, my grandfather as his father before him, a head gardener, my dad a keen and very capable gardener, I think the path I chose was probably inevitable!

Gardening doesn’t just offer us great pleasure but also our children; just the simple act of sowing a seed waiting for the first shoot to appear and watching it grow is enough to inspire a future generation of young gardeners.

To capture the imagination of your young gardeners maybe we should look at plants that excite the senses –• Calendularalovelyannual, brightflowersandastheyfadeseedsof three very different shapes.• Stachysbyzantineor‘lambsear’swithsoftfurryfoliagethatyou can’t resist stroking.• PickingfreshStrawberriesoreatingrawpeasfromthepodnochildcouldresist!• Growingpotatoesinthegroundorifspaceislimitedinlargepotsonyourpatio, when it’s time to harvest them it’s like searching for buried treasure!

To help inspire your budding gardeners how about – • Sowsomegiantsunflowersandseewhocangrowthetallest.• Makingawildlifecontainerpondwithalargewaterproofglazedpot, filledwith water and add small aquatic plants.• Howaboutusinghazelstickstomakeateepee, andthengrowingrunnerbeans all over it and hay presto a living and partly edible den.

A nice way to introduce your children to fruit and vegetable growing is to build a simple raised bed, the wood can be painted and decorated. Put in a strawberry plant, sow successional crops like lettuce, spring onions and beetroot, and longer term crops like carrots, peas and French beans that can just be dug up or picked and eatenraw.Don’tforgettosowarowortwoofannualflowerslikeNigellatoattractlots of bees and other insects for pollination.

A few plants to perhaps avoid in a child friendly garden –• AnythingveryspikylikePyracantha

and Berberis.

• Plantsthatcancauseirritation,like

Euphorbia who’s sap can irritate

the skin or Fremontidendron and its

furry leaves that can cause breathing

problems.

• Anythingpoisonouslikemonkshood

(Aconitum) or fox gloves (Digitalis)

which are very dangerous

if ingested.

Stamford Foodbank is based at All Saints’ & St John’s Church Centre, although all of the Churches in Stamford are pulling together for this great cause.

The Churches involved are - Church Baptist, Life Church, Salvation Army, St Mary & Augustine’s RC, St George’s, St Martin’s, St Mary’s, United Reformed.

How a Foodbank worksFoodbank is an organisation which provides a safety net of 3 days emergency food for people in a financial crisis. Only people with a genuine need of assistance will benefit from this charity, and there is a network of frontline care professionals, trained to identify those people in need.

How you can helpSchools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to the Foodbank at various collection points around the town.

Supermarket collections are one of the main ways that food is donated, and you will find a shopping trolley at the entrance/exit of the Sainsbury’s store in Stamford, with a list of what food they need most. All they ask is that you purchase one or two extra items within your weekly shop, to give to this worthy cause.

Want to help even more? Could you start a Foodbank collection point at your work, school or church?

OLYMPIC THEME!With the olympics coming to London in the summer of 2012, many people are turning their attention to sports of all kinds. We must remember that when we see all those athletes going for the gold medal, there is so much going on behind the scenes that has propelled that athlete to their current peak position. Years of dedication, motivation & commitment to physical training to hone their skills to where they are today, but it’s not just all about the physical body!

Athletes are great at training the body but many forget

about the mind, failure to recognise the importance of mind

control can hinder sports performance.

Top governing bodies/coaches are at last recognising the

importance of this aspect of development. If your sport does

not already employ someone to help you, then you are at a

disadvantage!!

As a sports hypnotherapist/peak performance consultant,

I can help you to focus on goals & develop the complete

athlete - from improving your golf swing to increasing your

motivation in the gym, all sports benefit from hypnotherapy/

NLP.

Sports psychologists work with sports participants across

both team & individual sports & from amateur to elite

levels of competition. The aim is to predominately help

athletes prepare psychologically for competition & to deal

with the psychological demands of both competition &

training & helping athletes to deal with the psychological

& emotional consequences of sustaining an injury. Exercise

psychologists are concerned with the application of

psychology to increase exercise participation & motivational

levels in the general public - optimising the benefits from

exercise & helping individuals with the implementation of a

plan to take more exercise.

After all our constant hard work each month, making sure we produce a fabulous magazine for you to read, we decided it was time for some serious R&R for the Scene team. We, therefore decided to head to The Olde Barn at Marston, just north of Grantham.

This charming rustic Spa hotel is set in beautiful countryside and the character and charm of the place is very inviting. We all booked a massage and some of us went for facials, whilst the others had manicures and pedicures using OPI products – it was pure luxury!

The pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room really added to the experience and meant we could all totally relax and unwind. For the more energetic there is a fully equipped gym available, but we were there to chill and chat, so the treadmill was ignored on this occasion.

After a delicious lunch, we continued with our treatments, in between relaxing by the pool. It really was a great day out and only 30 minutes north of Stamford on the A1. We all detoured into Downtown to do some shopping on the way home, which was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

BOCCIA

Boccia is a target sport that tests muscle control and accuracy,

demanding extreme skill and concentration at the highest level.

Believed to have Ancient Greek origins, Boccia is a tough

test of nerve, tactics and skill. Played on a rectangular court

by individuals, pairs and teams, the sport offers both tension

and excitement, as athletes aim to land balls close to a target

ball, across a series of demanding ends. The sport is similar to

boules or petanque and is played competitively in more than 50

countries worldwide.

Boccia is played by wheelchair athletes with cerebral palsy and

related locomotor conditions, with players required to be in a

seated position within a throwing box at one end of the playing

court. A classification system ensures an even playing field for

athletes to compete against others with similar disabilities.

GOAL BALL

Played competitively in more than 100 countries, Goalball

is one of the most popular Paralympic sports. Since it was

developed as a rehabilitation activity for injured soldiers

returning from World War II, Goalball has spread around the

world. Played by visually impaired athletes using a ball with

bells inside, it is among the most exciting team sports on

the Paralympic programme.

Did you know?

Athletes wear blackout masks (eyeshades) on the playing

court, which allows persons with varying degrees of vision

to participate together.

The ball reaches speeds of 60 kilometres per hour – players

literally put their bodies on the line to stop the fast-moving

ball crossing the goal line.

The aim is to score by rolling the ball at speed into the

opposition’s goal, while the opposition attempts to block

the ball with their bodies. Spectators must be quiet during

play so that players can hear the ball (and each other), but

they are free to cheer when a goal is scored. The team that

scores the most goals is the winner.

HISTORY OF THE PARALYMPIC GAMES

In 1948, as the Olympic Games took place

in London, the seeds for future Paralympic

Games were sown. History of the Paralympic

Games Pioneering neurologist Sir Ludwig

Guttmann organised a sports competition at

Stoke Mandeville Hospital to coincide with

the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. He

had already seen the rehabilitative power of

sport for spinalinjured World War II veterans

and wanted to build on this experience.

Guttmann then continued to repeat the event

every year at about the same time. In 1949, he

is reported to have said in his opening speech

that ‘maybe one day there would be Olympics

for the disabled’. Three years later, in 1952,

Dutch athletes joined the event, creating the

first international games for athletes with a

disability.

In 1960, Rome became the first Host City to use

its Olympic venues for the Paralympic Games,

with 400 athletes from 23 nations participating.

The first Paralympic Winter Games took place in

Örnsköldsvik, Sweden in 1976.

By the time of the Sydney 2000 Games, 18

sports were part of the programme, with

Paralympic Sailing and Wheelchair Rugby

making their debut. The Barcelona 1992 Games

featured 3,021 athletes from 82 nations. The

London 2012 Paralympic Games will feature 20

different sports with as many as 4,200 athletes

from 150 nations taking part.

“Don’t Run before you can Walk!” or

“ Listen to your Body!”

The Olympics can’t help but inspire us to

have a go or increase our exercise levels.

Healthcare professionals encourage daily

exercise and I am no different. However

don’t run before you can walk!

Don’t try to run a marathon without entering

into a structured training programme and

warming up and cooling down pre and post

exercise. Muscles and joints are most vulnerable

when asked to work in a way we haven’t before

or at least not for a long while.

Build exercise regimes up slowly. 20 mins

daily is a good place to start. Begin gently but

enough to raise your heart rate; brisk walking,

jogging, swimming or gardening. Be aware of

your limitations. If you carry excess weight,

start by walking, building gradually and loose

some weight first before you sign up for

exercise classes that look like such fun.

If you start exercising and end up in pain, listen

to your body. It may go away with time but is

just as likely to return unless you get it sorted.

It is difficult for the lay-person to identify

whether pain originates from joints, muscles or

both so my advice would be play it safe. Use

an ice pack rather than heat, especially when

dealing with back pain.

If you want more advice or to discuss an

individual problem then please call Bridget

Bath at Greenacres Chiropractic centre,

Glinton on 01733 254239 (leave a short

message if no reply) or drop me a line at

Viking invasion – with Katie (aged 10)In June I was invited to visit the Peterborough Museum for

the official opening of the Viking Exhibition. I really enjoy

going to museums where I can try things out, play games

and feel like I have been transported back in time. At the

exhibition, I played a Viking game about bartering with

my Mum and also tried loading a model ship with cargo

(without losing any into the sea!). If also got to stand at

the front of a Viking ship trying to sail it across the North

Sea whilst imagining warrior battles and adventure. The

museum is on my Summer ‘to do’ list, so I might see you

there!

** SUMMER OFFER **Until the start of September entrance to the Vikings

exhibition will be half price at just £2 for adults,

£1.25 for children, £1.75 for concessions and £6

for families. Entry to this exhibition is also FREE to

Hair, Pampering & Cakes - with Matthew (aged 7) & Katie (aged 10)We were really lucky to recently be invited to the evening

opening of CJ’s Kids & Teens on Wentworth Street in

Peterborough. The salon looks so cool, with little racing

car seats for toddlers and they can watch DVD’s whilst

they have their haircut. For older children, like us, there

are video games and DVD’s, so Mum can chat away to the

stylist whilst we catch up with a favourite show. Next door

to CJ’s, Margaret’s Tearoom served drinks, sandwiches and

yummy cakes. What a great evening!

Matthew says ‘The salon is so cool! I want my hair cutting

more often now, so I can keep going back’

Katie says ‘I loved the salon, it looks grown up and it’s

still great for children of all ages. I can’t wait to try out

the teens’ side’.

The two key looks this season seen on the catwalks were ‘New Edge’ and ‘Technicolor’. From the catwalk to the high street, these two trends have been adopted by the biggest stores in the business providing fashionable attire from toddlers to teenagers.

H&M’s ‘Celebrate Summer’ collection blends both looks mixing the 80s hot-trend of dungarees with bright neon T’s to create a thoroughly modern, fresh look. The girls are spoilt for choice with checked shirts and frilly dresses a la Cath Kidston whilst the boys will look oh-so-cool in bleached denim and festival-style shirts.

A much less known kid’s collection is that of River Island. Only recently created, the high-street brand has tailored its infamous style to kids producing the first-port-of-call for any fashion-savvy parent! With dresses from £10, jeans from £12 and accessories starting at a mere £1, who could now say no to a child? Vibrantflowerprints, folksyshifttopsandcutesyshortsawait the girls – although a punky comic-book T teamed with bubblegum pink shorts, or punchy leopard-print

denim ensure that there’s just the right about of attitude. Similarly, boys have soft yet vibrant tones, with city-print T’s, neon shades and cool denim to give a stylish LA vibe.

And who can forget good old Debenhams? The giant of the high-street ensures the best of the catwalk comes to you. Jasper Conran’s nautical inspired trends for Debenhams (J by Jasper Conran) give a ‘New England’ feel with miniature chinos, cardigans and Breton T’s for a classic lookthatsuitsbothboysandgirls.‘Butterfly’,byMatthewWilliamson, plays on the eponymous name with sweet girly prints for the younger age range, promoting candyfloss-cute dresses and tops.

All of the high street stores, from H&M to the Debenhams collections, are available online so there really is no excuse for not making sure the little angels look fabulous this summer – although, make sure they don’t outshine the very fashionable you!

MOTORING

The Vauxhall Insignia needs better

wing mirrors. They’re just too small

and narrow to give you a confident

view - especially when changing lanes

on motorways. The other small niggle

is the steering wheel. It’s big enough

to belong in a bus. But these minor

issues are eclipsed by the motor’s

merits.

For a start, the Insignia is a good

looking estate (Sports Tourer in

today’s parlance). It comes loaded

with equipment; it’s practical; it’s

comfortable, and it’s satisfying to

drive. But the model on test here - the

BiTurbo SRi Sports Tourer - is not just

the usual griffin labelled, load-lugging,

mile-muncher. Why? Because under

the bonnet, Vauxhall has shoehorned

in its most commanding diesel engine

ever. It produces 192 bhp and 295 lb/

ft of torque, and yet CO2 emissions

are only 134 g/km.

The heady, twin-sequential

turbocharged oil-burner is based on

the existing 1956 cc unit that powers

key models in the Insignia, Astra

and Zafira Tourer range. However,

in BiTurbo form it delivers an extra

34.5 bhp and a significant 37 lb/ft of

further ‘get-up-and-go’. The result for

the Sports Tourer is 0-60 mph in 8.4

THERE ARE many things I like about this car and just a couple of tiny things I don’t. Let’s get the grumbles out of the way first.

seconds. It’s the sort of acceleration

that gives you that perceptible ‘pulled

back into your seat’ feeling.

Complementing this power gain,

Vauxhall’s FlexRide adaptive damping

is standard on all Insignia BiTurbos

(normally a £790 option on front-

wheel drive models). The system

can ‘learn’ how you drive the car and

adapts the dampers accordingly. You

can also select Tour and Sport buttons,

and configure the throttle, steering

and damper settings in Sport mode

separately.

The result is a car which is more

rewarding to drive than many other

large turbo diesel motors on the market.

In Sport mode it’s taut, quick, and it

takes corners on rails. In Tour mode it’s

one which will give you a magic carpet

ride to work. In normal mode, it’s

simply a good estate car with poke.

Unsurprisingly, the Sports Tourer has

a big area for loading, and cleverly,

under the powered tailgate (which

incorporates the rear light clusters),

there is an additional set of rear lights,

making the car highly visible to other

road users if you need to sort out your

luggage after the sun has gone down.

Finally, thanks to a package of eco

features – including standard Start/

Stop across the range – the Insignia

BiTurbo Sports Tourer manages to

achieve a combined 55.4 mpg. This

is the last piece of the jigsaw to

make the car a great all-rounder. It’s

economical and spacious enough to be

the main family car; its emissions are

low enough to make it an affordable

yet very smart business motor, and, of

course, the potency of its engine will

bring out the devil in you when you feel

the need for speed.

The Great Migration

A Safari is never complete without witnessing one of the most

spectacular phenomenon’s that is forever the subject of books

& documentaries, the annual migration from the Serengeti

in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. The main spectacle

takes place during July & August each year when hoards of

wildebeests, zebras and gazelles make the 500 mile trip with

the pinnacle being the excitement of the river crossings. Also

seen are elephants, black rhinos, buffalos, hartebeests, hippos

and crocodiles, which all in all make for a breath-taking sight.

Outside of these months you can still witness the migration as

the herds move around the plains of Tanzania’s Serengeti.

Climb Kilimanjaro

Standing at nearly 6,000 metres, this dormant volcano is

undoubtedly the roof of the African continent. It has 5 main

routes to take, with different ones that suit all levels, but whatever

Kilimanjaro lightly and allow for acclimatisation, and for those

who prefer something less demanding there is the alternative

Sardine Run

The ‘Sardine Season’ starts in May and runs through to the

end of July, and the best place to be for this fishy frenzy is the

South African region of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and its endless

coastline. The season is triggered when millions of sardines

travel from their spawning grounds near the southern tip

of Africa and head east following the South African coast

northwards toward KZN. They follow a route close to the shore,

With the vast shoals of fish, it’s a hotspot for predators such

After hurtling down the spectacular Victoria Falls, the Zambezi

Unlike others, this can be completed by a beginner, so long

A Room Full of BonesBy Elly Griffiths Quercus, 2012. £7.99

The Submission by Amy Waldman Windmill Books £7.99

A jury gathers in Manhattan to select a memorial for the victims of a devastating terrorist attack. Their fraught deliberations complete, the jurors open the envelope containing the anonymous winner’s name. The discover he is an American Muslim.

The fourth in a series featuring forensic archaeologist Dr Ruth Galloway. “You can bury the coffin but you can’t bury the secret…” - it is Halloween night, and the local museum in King’s Lynn is preparing

for an unusual event – the opening of a coffin containing the bones of a medieval bishop. But when Ruth Galloway arrives to supervise, she finds the museum’s curator lying dead beside the coffin. A gripping novel with a Norfolk setting, this is an absorbing read with an engaging

and realistic heroine in Ruth Galloway. A read that takes you to Norfolk, into a world of bones, history, and sinister happenings and keeps you turning the pages. If you prefer to read the series in order, the first is ‘The Crossing Places’ (2009).

The Great Silence: 1918-1920 Living in the Shadow of the Great War By Juliet Nicolson John Murray Publishers Ltd. £9.99

Peace at last, after Lloyd George declared it had been ‘the war to end all wars’, would surely bring relief and a renewed sense of optimism? The Great Silence is the story of the pause between 1918 and 1920. A two-

minute silence to celebrate those who died was underpinned by a more enduring silence born out of national grief. Some struggled to come to terms with the last four years, while others were anxious to move towards a new future.

Change came to women, who were given the vote only five years after Emily

Davidson had thrown herself on the ground at Ascot race course, to the poor, determined to tolerate their condition no longer, and to those permanently scarred, mentally and physically, bytheconflict.Whetheritwasembraced or rejected, change had arrived as the impact of a tragic war was gradually absorbed.

They are cast into a debate about grief, art and the meaning of Islam. When the news of the selection leaks to the press, outraged family members collide with hungry journalists, wary activists and opportunistic politicians.

Great holiday read!

£Who Cares Who Pays?

The media is full of talk about the government’s latest efforts to fund care for

the elderly. The latest ‘Big Idea’ is to allow people to borrow against the value

of their home to fund care, with the home being sold to pay off the debts after

the elderly person has died.

The media is full of talk about the government’s latest efforts

to fund care for the elderly. The latest ‘Big Idea’ is to allow

people to borrow against the value of their home to fund care,

with the home being sold to pay off the debts after the elderly

person has died.

What this doesn’t do is to solve the problem of assets that

you have amassed in your lifetime being used up to pay for

care instead of being passed on to you family. So is there

anything that you can do to protect your assets for future

generations.

The short answer is YES but only if you make the right plans.

One in three of us will need long term care in later life, but

the sad fact is that very few of us plan for the care we might

need. What your plan involves will depend on where you are

on your journey towards care and will differ greatly if you are

on the cusp of going in to care. But you can rest assured that

all is not necessarily lost, your care plan will include Lasting

Power of Attorney Documents and an appropriate Will. It may

include, reordering your investments, placing assets or your

property in trust. Purchasing insurance or annuities may also

form a part of your plan.

The bottom line is that every person’s circumstances are

different, so if you want to avoid the care lottery you need to

talk to somebody.

Call us today to arrange a free initial consultation

to discuss your personal circumstances

and needs – 01778 342291.
