THE CLOSURE

Page 2: The Closure

We researched Hammer Horrors, a British horror film brand based inLondon. We researched this to develop and understand what constitutes aBritish film. British films, especially independent ones, have a low budget sothere is no CGI or digital technology. Hammer films are a good example ofthis, also This Is England and Shifty are low budgeted British films. Also, with British films they tend to have low budget setting and less famousactors, this shows in different British films and will be the same in ours.

We would like to work with the production company UK Film Council andthe distribution optimum releasing because they are both well known sowould bring in viewers that have watched movies recently produced anddistributed by them. They are both UK based and have worked withindependent film makers like Shane Meadows. The UK Film Council ‘workto make non-mainstream films more widely available to cinema audiences andsupport the export of UK films abroad.’

PlotThe film is based at a normal every day school after hours. Everyone has

gone except two teachers and a caretaker, so they think. Our 2 minutes will includeshooting the two teachers separating before leaving the school. The security guardhears a ‘bang’ so takes his torch to look around the school. He finds the one teacherbeing feasted upon by some unknown creature as the other teacher watches from theCCTV tapes.

We did primary research to see what films had been watched and how they had beenwatched from teenagers aged around 16. The most popular genres wereHorror, Comedy and Action. They were watched mostly at the cinema or on DVDrather than copies or online. We then added to this with different age groups andfound the same results. This shows that Horror films can appeal to all audiences.

Our film is going to be aimed at 15+ years old. As the film is located at a school themain audience is going to be students and teachers. As the setting is an every daylocation this will appeal to real Horror fans as it represents real life. The social classestargeted would be B, C1, C2 and D, because it can appeal to any member ofsociety, but people in class A and E might not be as interested as they prefer differentthings and may not want to, or be able to go to the cinema. The film will interestmainly a male audience as most horrors do. There are no particular religions thatwould tend to be interested in the film.

Some of the things you expect to see in a horror film are;blood/gore, a mysterious creature, a vulnerable woman, restricted light, highcontrast, digetic eerie sounds, non-digetic tension music..

Our horror film includes a lot of these; The teacher left in the building alone is a woman, representing vulnerabilityWe have a mysterious inhuman little girlThere will be blood during the flash light sceneThe flashlight will create restricted light, The contrast between light and dark of the torch and the CCTV screensDigetic and non digetic sounds

Mise-en-sceneSound: Digetic (doors creaking, the ‘bang’, footsteps etc) and non digetic (suspense)Lighting: High contrast, restricted (used when caretaker is looking for girl with torch)Props: The torch, school books, CCTV cameraCamera shots: CCTV low angle shots from high up to create the effect someone's watching. POV shots from the caretaker walking around school with the torchEditing: Quick movements

Narrative. We have Propp’s theory, in the case of our characters having ‘jobs’. The one teacher being a vulnerable woman, the other being her romance and the mysterious inhuman creature being the bad. There will also be cases of binary opposites, ‘good vs. evil’ with the teacher against the possessed girl. Our film also has the enigma of leaving the female teacher alone in the school after the two men die, leaving the audience wanting to know what's going to happen.

We need to film in the dark so January after school hours around 6. We are filming in the school, CTTC.

We are using the four members of the group as the actors, but wont need all characters at the same time, so can create a log of who

filmed at a particular time
