WELCOME to . . . THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE

A Letter from the Pastor

Dear Parishioners, During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, and now especially within this Season of Lent, we desire to explore further the “language of Mercy.” It is a word that seems to have a profoundly religious meaning and is used rarely in other contexts, except perhaps in a courtroom when the accused, found guilty, “throws himself at the mercy of the court.” Since our Holy Father Pope Francis called this year a time for mercy, the faithful are inspired with the response of trying to understand the fuller meaning of that word in our Lenten reflections. In the MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2016, the Holy Father stated that “mercy expresses God’s way of reaching out to the sinner, offering him a new chance to look at himself, convert, and believe, thus restoring his relationship with him. In Jesus crucified, God shows his desire to draw near to sinners, however far they may have strayed from him. In this way he hopes to soften the hardened heart.” God’s mercy has the power to transform human hearts. Pope Francis said that mercy enables each one of us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn. He recalls Jesus’ address to his disciples that they likewise should “be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful” in their response to correcting offenses and rebuilding bridges in relationships that have been torn apart by transgressions that alienate and resentments that crush. “In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbor and to devote ourselves to what the Church’s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them. On such things will we be judged. For this reason, I expressed my hope that “the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; this will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty, and to enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy.” During the season of Lent now in this Jubilee Year we

have a special time to explore and improve any broken relationships we have found injurious and harmful to our emotional, psychological and spiritual lives. It is “a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listening to God’s word and by practicing the works of mercy. In the corporal works of mercy, we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, sheltered, visited; in the spiritual works of mercy – counsel, instruction, forgiveness, admonishment and prayer – we touch more directly our own sinfulness. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated. By touching the flesh of the crucified Jesus in the suffering, sinners can receive the gift of realizing that they too are poor and in need.” The language of Mercy, the meaning of Mercy and the purpose of Mercy are to be pondered devoutly and pursued vigorously so that both the offender and offended will be restored and broken hearts and deflated spirits will be made wholesome and holy. Mercy produces a new heart and a new spirit in which to live, rejoice, and mirror God’s glory. Indeed, God’s Mercy comes to us most especially through the Sacrament of Penance. That very religious experience of the confession of sins and absolution of wrongs brings us into a sacred moment in time where God’s gracious love and compassionate mercy are keenly felt. We hear, know and correctly believe that, on this side of heaven, through the administration of the priest confessor, the merciful Lord has cleansed all sorrowful sinners of their wrongs and has expiated their guilt. As these days of Lent proceed, let us prepare well our hearts and consciences for a worthy reception of the Sacrament of Mercy. Let us hear the efficacious language of His absolving words and know the true meaning of the Cross He bore and suffered for our redemption.

For questions or more information contact Susanna Bolle at [email protected] or 651-291-4411 ENDING POLITICAL HOMELESSNESS: Participate in your local precinct caucus on March 1 and promote a consistent ethic of life in Minnesota. Many Catholics feel a sense of “political homelessness,” as no party seems to advance a consistent ethic of life. But Minnesota Catholics have a fast-approaching opportunity to be a part of the solution. On March 1, local precinct caucuses will be held throughout the state. Precinct caucuses are an important step in the political process, in which parties nominate candidates and form party platforms. A unified Catholic voice at the caucus level can play a large role in ending “political homelessness” by urging political parties to adopt positions that foster human flourishing from conception to natural death. The Minnesota Catholic Conference can equip you to make a difference by being a voice for human dignity and the common good at your precinct caucus. Whether you’re a seasoned caucus-goer or have never gotten involved before, the MCC website provides helpful resources, including an explanation of the caucus process and sample resolutions. Visit the Minnesota Catholic Conference website at mncc.org and click on the “Ending Political Homelessness” slide to access these resources (or visit mncc.org/mn-caucusing-cheat-sheet/) To find out where your local precinct caucus will be held, call 651-293-1200 (Democratic) or 651-222-0022 (Republican), or visit caucusfinder.sos.state.mn (major and minor party information included).

STATIONS of the CROSS During Lent You are invited to participate in the Stations of the Cross every Friday of Lent. The Stations will take place at 6:30pm every Friday except for March 18th when they will be held at 6pm prior to the 6:30pm Fish Fry. Please attend these very meaningful Lenten services.
