The Choice is Yours…

Page 2: The Choice is yours

• Narrated 'Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) Allah's Apostle used to invoke Allah in the prayer saying:

• "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min adhabil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-masihid-dajjal, wa a'udhu

bika min fitnatil-mahya wa fitnatil-mamati. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-ma thami wal-

maghrami.

• (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave and from the afflictions of Masi,h Ad-Dajjal and from the afflictions of life and death. O

Allah, I seek refuge with You from the sins and from being in debt).“

• Somebody said to him,• "Why do you so frequently seek refuge with Allah

from being in debt?" The Prophet replied,• "A person in debt tells lies whenever he speaks, and

breaks promises whenever he makes (them).“ 'Aisha also narrated:

• I heard Allah's Apostle in his prayer seeking refuge with Allah from the afflictions of Ad-dajjal.

• Bukhari (Book#12, Hadith #795)

• Pride • Pride and vanity are competitive.

If someone else's pride really bothers you, you have a lot of

pride.

• It Is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas'ud that the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him), observed: He who

has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not

enter Paradise. A person (amongst his hearers) said:

Verily a person loves that his dress should be fine, and his shoes should be fine. He (the

Holy Prophet) remarked: Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace. pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and

contempt for the people. Muslim (Book #001,

Hadith #0164)

• Humility• Seeing ourselves as we are and not

comparing ourselves to others is humility

• Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives Allah adds to his respect, and the one who shows humility Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).

• Muslim (Book #032, Hadith #6264)

This is about more than money...• Avarice/Greed

Greed wants to get its "fair share" or a bit more

And He said: The inmates of Hell are five: the

weak who lack power to (avoid evil), the (carefree)

who pursue (everything irrespective of the fact that it

is good or evil) and who do not have any care for their

family or for their wealth. And those dishonest

whose greed cannot be concealed even in the case of minor things. And the third.

who betray you. morning and evening, in regard to your

family and your property. He also made a mention of the miser and the liar and those

who are in the habit of abusing people and using

obscene and foul language. Abu Ghassan in his narration

did not make mention of" Spend and there would be

spent for you."  Muslim (Part hadith )(Book #040,

Hadith #6853)

• Generosity• Generosity means letting

others get the credit or praise. It is giving without having expectations of the

other person.

• Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, The example of a miser and

a generous person is like that of two persons

wearing iron cloaks from the breast up to the neck

When the generous person spends, the iron cloak

enlarges and spread over his skin so much so that it covers his fingertips and obliterates his tracks. As for the miser, as soon as

he thinks of spending every ring of the iron cloak sticks to its place (against his body) and he tries to expand it, but it does not

expand. The Prophet pointed with his hand towards his throat.

•  Bukhari (Book#63, Hadith #219i)

Page 5: The Choice is yours

• Envy• Envy resents the good others

receive or even might receive. Envy is almost

indistinguishable from pride at times.

•  Narrated 'Uqba bin 'Amr: The Prophet once came out and

offered the funeral prayer for the martyrs of Uhud, and

proceeded to the pulpit and said, "I shall be your

predecessor and a witness on you, and I am really looking at my sacred Fount now, and no doubt, I have been given the keys of the treasures of the

world. By Allah, I am not afraid that you will worship others along with Allah, but I am

afraid that you will envy and fight one another for worldly

fortunes."  • Bukhari (Book #56,

Hadith #795)

• Love• "Love is patient, love is

kind…" Love actively seeks the good of others for their

sake.

•  Narrated Ibn Masud: I heard the Prophet saying, "There is

no envy except in two: a person whom Allah has

given wealth and he spends it in the right

way, and a person whom Allah has given wisdom (i.e. religious knowledge) and he gives his decisions

accordingly and teaches it to the others."

 (Bukhari Book #24 Hadith #490)

Page 6: The Choice is yours

• Wrath/Anger • Anger is often our first

reaction to the problems of others. Impatience with the faults of others is related to

this.

•  Narrated Abu Huraira: A man said to the Prophet

, "Advise me! "The Prophet said, "Do not

become angryand furious." The man asked

(the same) again and again, and the Prophet said in each case, "Do not become angry and

furious." Bukhari  (Book #73,

Hadith #137)

• Kindness• Kindness means taking the

tender approach, with patience and compassion

• Narrated Asma' bint Abu Bakr: My mother came to me, hoping (for my favor) during the lifetime of the

Prophet asked the Prophet, "May I treat her kindly?" He replied, "Yes." Ibn 'Uyaina said, "Then Allah revealed: 'Allah forbids you not with

regards to those who fought not against you because of religion, and drove you not out from your homes, that

you should show them kindness and deal

justly with them.'.......(60.8)  Bukhari (Book #73

Hadith #9)

• LustLust is the self-destructive drive for pleasure out of proportion to its worth. Sex, power, or image can be used well,

but they tend to go out of control.

• Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying. Allah fixed the

very portion of adultery which a man will indulge in. There would

be no escape from it. The adultery of the eye is the lustful

look and the adultery of the ears is listening to voluptuous (song or talk) and the adultery

of the tongue is licentious speech and the adultery of the

hand is the lustful grip (embrace) and the adultery of

the feet is to walk (to the place) where he intends to commit

adultery and the heart yearns and desires which he may or

may not put into effect.  • Muslim(Book #033,

Hadith #6422)

• Abu Sa'id Khudri reported Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying: Avoid sitting on the paths. They (the Companions) said: Allah's Messenger, we cannot help but holding our meetings (in these paths) and discuss matters (there). Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: If you insist on holding meetings, then give the path its due right. They said: What are its due rights? Upon this he said: Lowering thegaze, refraining from doing harm, exchanging of greetings. commanding of good and forbidding from evil. Muslims(Book#026 Hadith #5376)

Self ControlSelf control and self mastery prevent pleasure from killing the soul by suffocation. Legitimate pleasures are controlled in the same way an athlete's muscles are: for maximum efficiency without damage.

Page 8: The Choice is yours

• Gluttony

• Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Good way, dignified good bearing and moderation are the twenty-fifth part of Prophecy.Abu Dawud  (Book #41, Hadith #4758)

• Faith and Temperance• Temperance

accepts the natural limits of pleasures and preserves this natural balance.

This does not pertain only to

food, but to entertainment and

other legitimate goods, and even the company of

others.

Page 9: The Choice is yours

• Sloth• The other sins

work together to deaden the spiritual senses so we first become slow to respond to God and then drift completely into the sleep of complacency.

• Zeal• Zeal is the energetic response of the heart to Allah's commands.
