The Cape Town Holocaust Centre is delighted to invite Grade 9-12 learners to enter The White Rose Art & Writing Competition: Resisting Injustice. The closing date for entries is Thursday 30 July 2015. What is the aim of the competition? To encourage a greater understanding of the need to protect human rights and to respond to injustice in this country and globally. The White Rose Competition takes its name from a group of German university students who resisted Nazi oppression. To learn about who resisted the Nazis, and how they did so. To consider what relevance this history has for a South African in 2015. What else do you gain from entering the competition? Writing skills Independent research skills Design skills Learners may choose to respond to the theme Resisting Injustice through writing or art. Amazing prizes to be won! Who can enter? Any Grade 9–12 learner, no matter which subjects you take. The competition is divided into two sections: Junior (Grade 9-10) and Senior (Grade 11-12). We look forward to receiving your entry! The White Rose Competition: Resisting InjusticeHere is some background information to help you:TheHolocaustreferstothegenocideofEuropeanJewry,committedbytheNazisandtheircollaborators.Likeallgenocides,theHolocaustdidnotbeginwithmassmurder.TheracistNazistateencouragedprejudice. The world stood by and watched while Europe’s Jews were persecuted and eventually sent tothedeathcampsofPoland.Ordinarypeoplewatchedastheir Jewishneighbourswereremoved.However,thereweresomeshiningexamplesofindividualswhoriskedtheirlivesandthelivesoftheirfamilies tosave Jews.Theirstories illustrate their response to injustice.This response to injusticerequired courage, care and compassion. Their stories are true examples of humanity and all thathumanityshouldstrivetobe.

Somepeopleorganizedresistancegroups.YoungGermanstudentsoftheWhiteRoseMovementspokeoutagainstNazipoliciesandthetreatmentofJews.InDenmark,theeffortsofthevastmajorityofDanessaved95%oftheDanishJewishpopulation.CommunitiessuchasthepeopleofLeChambon-sur-Lignon,aswellasindividualssuchasPastorDietrichBonhoeffer,OskarSchindler,RaoulWallenberg,ChiuneSugiharaandHugoArmandisplayedcompassionandcouragebyresistingtheNazisthroughhelping the Jews.

The victims themselves resisted the Nazi regime’s brutality. The Nazis attempted to dehumanisetheirvictimsbystrippingthemoftheir righttoeducation,culturalactivities, freedomofexpressionandmovement.Thus,theactofcreatingapoem,keepingadiary, leadingaprayerservice,painting,or recording what was happening to people in the ghetto, became an act of resistance. Despiteextraordinaryodds,somepeopletookuparmstoresisttheNazis.
