rThe California Gold Fields
While this document was intended to be a register for men from Cooper County, Missouri who went to the California gold fields, it has transpired to become something more. It also includes information on 49ers from adjoining counties, as well as, data on early pioneers. It has been interesting to learn that some of the earliest settlers of Howard and Cooper Counties, Missouri were also among the very earliest “Anglo” settlers of California. The history of Solano and Yolo counties are an extension of ours. A) Register of Forty Niners since the meeting of Oct 10, 1889, who went to California in 1849 and 1850. In the fall MoSGA Fall Journal is a record of the proceedings of the Forty-Niners and Old Timers Association copied from the files of the Joint Collection of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection in Columbia, Mis-souri. Betty Harvey Williams copied the manuscript from the microfilm record. Meetings of the Forty-Niners and Old Timers Association were held in August for 2 days and were rotated among the counties and chosen by ballot. The 1891 meeting was to be the 2nd Wednesday in August, at Boonville. The 1890 meeting was held Aug. 20, in Sedalia. The 1889 meeting was held in Boonville. A.J. Elliott was born in Howard County, Territory of Missouri 20 Jul 1819 and died in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri, on 25 Sep 1892 aged 73 years 2 months and 5 days: and a resident of Missouri all his life. His funeral took place in the Christian Church in Sedalia, Pet-tis County, Missouri, on the 27th day of September 1892. Rev. Myers Pastor of said church officiating. He was founder and leader in orga-nizing the "Old Timers Association." Composing the counties of Coo-per, Howard, Moniteau, Morgan, Pettis and Saline in the State of Mis-souri. Left Pettis County in 1850 for the gold fields of California. Mrs. Patsy Briscoe Elliott, wife of founder Maj. A.J. Elliott, died 06 Apr 1890.

Fryer, James H.
James H. Fryer was born at Otter Creek, Madison County, KY ca 1808. He moved to Cooper County Missouri in the late 1820s or early 1830s. He married Margaret G. McCulloch, daughter of Thomas McCulloch and Mary (Polly) McCune. He was a brother-in-law of Tandy Douglass and Robert A. McCulloch (49er). His wife was a first cousin of Spottswood and Joseph McCulloch (49ers). James Douglass (49er), son of Tandy Douglass was James H. Fryer's nephew. James H. Fryer resided in the Clark's Fork township near the home of Tandy and James Douglass. James H. Fryer and some of the McCullochs were brick makers and made the bricks for the original courthouse in Booneville. The Fryer home was made of brick and stood in place until at least the 1940s or 1950s. Fryer's home was the residence of Nicholas Smith Esq. in the 1880s (Ref: Sec. 29, T. 47, R. 16, Cooper Co. MO.) James H. Fryer went to California with the group from Coo-per County led by McCulloch and Houck. Sometime in 1850, Fryer became concerned about the welfare of his family in Cooper County and attempted to return to Missouri. Fryer reportedly succumbed to Cholera while aboard a ship sailing from San Francisco. (Note, how-ever, that an IGI Individual Record for James H. Fryer indicates his death occurred in New Orleans, LA in October 1850). Upon his return from the California gold fields, James Douglass married his first cousin, (James H. Fryer's daughter), Zerelda. After the Civil War, James Douglass, his wife Zerelda, James H. Fryer's widow, Margaret G. McCulloch Fryer, and five of Zerelda's sib-lings moved to Johnson County, Missouri near Kingsville.
