A Message From the BIDs Executive Director

2014 has been an amazing year forDowntown Yonkers. For years, ourcommunity has been viewed in terms of the

potential we have to become that nextgreat city in the region. Our coreinfrastructure is unique andaccommodating, which includes ourbeautiful waterfront, a transportation hub(24 minutes to NYC via Metro North), agrowing district of high-end restaurants, and a desire to fully utilize underdevelopedland. In 2014, people really started to noticeand Downtown Yonkers saw an increase innew businesses and new residents. Weve

especially seen increased interest from theart community, with dozens of artists andnew studios opening in the area (see page8). This momentum has already plantednew seeds for growth next year. At leasttwo up-scale, residential buildings will becompleted and several others will havebroken ground. The sustained and strongdemand for apartments in DowntownYonkers is an excellent sign that peoplewant to be here. Buildings that have been

vacant for decades are now beingrefurbished as the demand by newbusinesses is also growing. We are close toan important tipping point, in which the 10million people who live within an hourrealize that Downtown Yonkers really is thenext place to be. With the right planning, infrastructure, investments, and partners,we are poised for growth unlike anythingthis city has ever seen.

The Yonkers Downtown BID is proud to bepart of this and will do everything we can tocreate an atmosphere that fosters thisgrowth. Through our work, we produce theevents that drive people to this area, increase the enjoyment for those who livehere, and cause a positive shift in theperceptions of Yonkers. The BID keeps ourstreets safe and clean; replacing blightedlandscapes with beautiful murals andartwork. We are a hub for communicatinginformation about Downtown Yonkers, promoting businesses, and buildingpartnerships within both the public andprivate sectors. The Yonkers Downtown BIDwas proud to advocate and invest ourresources in both short and long-termprograms with this vision in mind.

Looking back, we have done so much in2014. The Yonkers Downtown BID producedover 40 free, events, bringing tens ofthousands of people to our area. Theseevents are a great way to engage localresidents and showcase our community tonew visitors. Our most notable events, including our Friday Night Jazz & Bluesconcert series and the Yonkers Riverfest areconsidered amongst the best events of theirtype in the county (Once again thank you toall our sponsors especially the City of Yonkersand Domino Sugar). We increased our teamof Rangers who are in the streets everyday, keeping things clean and helping those inneed. Weve invested in new equipment towork more effectively and are looking tofurther expand our impact in the future.

On behalf of everyone at the YonkersDowntown BID, I wish you a happy andhealthy holiday season. I hope to see younext year in Downtown Yonkers.
