PE, Earl Huson introduced this year’s Dream Home Committee Chair, Norm Legare. Norm gave a stunning history of our fund raising efforts. Since its inception 33 years ago, we moved from a yearly garage sale yielding $5,000 to the current suc-cess of our Dream Home endeavours yielding in excess of $200,000. What a smart move for our Club to form a partnership with the Calgary Stam-pede Board in 1977. These monies go yearly to support selected chari-ties. Club History

Bob Watson gra-ciously presented a recollection of Jack Westbrook’s birthday celebration at the July

8th, 1965 Stampede Luncheon. Jack, a Club Charter member, former Direc-tor, Secretary and Past President made significant contributions to Rotary, not the least of which was the annual Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park Celebrations. In his professional career, Jack retired from his position as Regional Manager, Business Develop-ment and Marketing with CIBC after 40 years.

Classification Talk - Bryan Walton Born on this day in 1954 in Westlock, AB, Bryan grew up in Edmonton and became an alumnus of the University of Alberta holding a Bachelor and Masters of Science in Zoology. Aside from a short stint in Ottawa, Bryan ac-cepted the CEO position with Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association in 2007 and remains there today. With the Alberta Beef Industry Conference being held in Red Deer this year, a theme of “Own the Plate” has been adopted. However, the challenge pre-sented today by Bryan was that “All Rotarians be Meatari-ans!” Happy Birthday, Bryan and we will all do our best to take up your challenge. www.cattlefeeders.ca

Sergeant-at Arms Keith Davis Bryan Walton dropped $5 in the bucket because he forgot to bring steaks to his birthday luncheon. After all, Ana brought cupcakes to hers. Bryan dropped another $5 for offering bribes to Club Executive Secretary, Linda Tatter-sall. Chas “Like Lightening” Filipski paid a $5 fine for being caught on the se-curity tape of Air Force One and increasing se-curity costs to all Canadi-ans. Chas countered with the offer of a 20 spot for being able to announce his great pride in the Americans beating our wonderful Canadian Junior Hockey Team in the most recent game. John Fitzsimmons dropped a $20 in the bucket for his blatant business promotion in the Calgary Herald Newspa-per.

Hugh Delaney led a hand holding version of Auld Lang Syne in celebration of our New 2010 Year!

Stay-in-School Golf Tournament

Earl Huson then introduced Larry Kennedy, Chair of the SIS Golf Tour-nament. This major fundraiser pro-vides financial and mentoring support to students selected in grade 6 with high potential for attending post sec-ondary institutions.

Over the past 7 years, we have raised approximately $1.4 million with a record $134,000 coming from 2009. Larry asked us to embark upon a quest to secure live and silent auction items with a minimum value of $100 for the July 29th, 2010 Cottonwood Golf & Country Club event.

Club News

JANUARY is Rotary Awareness Month!

On December 27, 2009 there was a tragic car accident and Margaret Pulwicki died. Margaret was the mother of Alexandra Pulwicki, the St. Mary’s High School stu-dent who placed second in our Four-Way Test speech competition last spring. (Alexandra’s talk was of a scien-tific nature.) Dorothea Schaab has forwarded our con-dolences to Alexandra on behalf of our St. Mary’s Part-nership.

The Board regretfully accepted the resignation from the Club from Ralph Gibson. Adrian Bohach is no longer a member of the Club.

Visitation: Reported by Don O’Dwyer. Howard Miller is in the Rockyview Hospital, Unit 82 Room 12. His tele-phone number in his room is 403-943-3094. He would love a visit or a telephone call. He told Linda that he had a complaint against Rotary. The first 3 days he was in the hospital, he only had 31 visitors!

The Volunteer Services Committee would like to thank all Rotary members, partners, family and friends who graciously donated their time on Sunday, December 27,

2009, for the “Feed The Hungry” dinner service at St. Mary’s – see attached letter of thanks from Feed The Hungry.

For our Partners – The pictures from the Christmas Brunch will be posted shortly to the Calgary South web-site www.rotarycs.org and will be available to view as a slide show.

There is a seat sale ending today with remarkable airline prices for those wanting to attend the Montreal Rotary International Convention June 2010. Ted Rowsell, Claudia Brews and Constance Jackson have started the first Rotary Calgary South Downhill Ski Group. If you or your partner wants to be put on the list to be notified of weekly group excursions, please e-mail Constance Jackson at [email protected]. Chas Filipski encouraged all to attend the Annual Larry Kwong Chinese New Year’s Celebration January 29th. There is underground parking to accommodate all.

Bob Boyden’s closing comments encouraged all Rotari-ans to “Rise Above the Little Things”. Great advice Bob, especially as we venture into the New Year.
