Helping you to manage your moneyIf you would like free help on managing yourmoney, then there is a special three eveningCAP Money course being run at BewdleyBapist Church.

CAP (Christians Against Poverty) is moneymanagement course that teaches peoplebudgeting skills and a simple, cash-basedsystem that really works. This course willhelp anyone to get more in control of theirfinances, so they can save, give and preventdebt..

CAP Money teaches.

How to build and live on a budget.

This is the cornerstone of managing your money well. The session includes advice on how toincrease your income and how to cut costs.

The CAP Money system.

This system will help to simplify your money and make it understandable. It operates usingthree accounts for your money: a regular payments account, a cash account and a savingsaccount.

How to live from week to week using cash.

Living on cash and getting away from cards means you know exactly where you are and helpsyou to spend less money. It’s statistically proven that you spend 33% less money when payingby cash rather than cards

By applying these three principles, you will learn how to manage your money, and live yourlife!

For more details and to book places contact John Rhodes on 01299 403267 or check outwww.capmoney.org

The course starts onthe 15th Septemberat 7:30 in BewdleyBaptist Church,HighStreet, Bewdley.

Editorial News

The harvests in, the schools are back, holidays are over and the days haveshortened. Oh, dear, I think I feel rather depressed. Some stiffening ofthe sinews is required. I shall sit and work on:

Ten reasons to welcome autumn:

1. My apple trees are keeping me supplied with sensationally tasty eaters

2. The rush to pick and freeze all the fruit and veg from the garden isover

3. Everywhere looks wonderful in shades of orange, gold and brown

4. The hayfever season is over

5. The clocks haven’t gone back yet

6. The garden has stopped demanding twentyfour-hour attention

7. Holiday prices have gone down

8. Our societies’ activities are all starting up again after the summer break

Oh dear, I think I’ve run out. Do feel free to email me something cheery about Septemberto ensure I stay smiley throughout the month. I’m sure this month’s Bridge will help. Wehave more stunning photos from Gary, more news from our regulars and more evidence thatBewdley stays a good place to live whatever the season.

BBeewwddlleeyy IInn BBlloooomm 22001111The standard of the displays this year was excellent, particularly in the large and small privategardens, where the marks were very close. Mr.and Mrs. CC Quayle of Bowcastle Farm,Tanners Lane, who have not entered previously, won the large garden class. Their garden wasdescribed as very special,

All Saints church won praise for very good maintenance, though it would benefit from moreflowering shrubs and roses along the boundaries. Now, if any kind persons could donate theodd shrub or two, there is a good home waiting.

An innovation this year was a scarecrow competition for those who entered the Schoolcategory. The winner was “Fred the Farmer” by Far Forest Primary, which had interestinglegs, clad in crisp packets

Why is it that such a high proportion of mobile home dwellers are so keen to put in entries? There were 21 mobile home surrounds to be judged. These included eight from TheWoodland Park Homes, which has not previously sent in any entries. Welcome to you, andwell done for taking two of the top three places. .Hugh Morgan, (We heard from Mrs Quayle earlier in the year. Well done for further success! Ed.)

Come along and find out how to turn allthose spare apples and pears into qualityjuice or cider! This course is bought to youby the Grow with Wyre project hence thereis only a £10 booking fee for what wouldotherwise be a far more expensive course.

Spaces are limited so book early to avoiddisappointment. To book your place write to:Community Greenspace Team. WorcesterWoods Countryside Centre, WildwoodDrive, Worcester, WR5 2LG or [email protected] .

As a follow-up to this course the Grow WithWyre Partnership and Wyre CommunityLand Trust are seeking to help local peoplemake the most of their autumn fruit bonanzarather than waste the fruit. The fruit doesnot need to be perfect and for cider makingcould also include windfalls.

Equipment and expertise is available to

enable small groups/ individuals press fruit tomake juice and/or cider. There will be amodest charge to cover transport costs andreplenishment of equipment.

As a rough guide 100 kilos fruit (about 8sacks) should yield 40-60 litres of juice. Thisis dependent on fruit variety, ripeness andthe efficiency of the various presses.

They have a range of fruit presses availablefor hire including the all-important step ofmilling the fruit before pressing, known in thetrade as “scratting”.

What you do with the juice is up to you:

• You can also hire pasteurisers (pasteurisedjuice keeps for up to 12 months) andsupply glass or plastic bottles for storage.(Small quantities can be frozen in plasticbottles.)

• For the alcoholically minded, cider/perryproduction is not daunting but someextra equipment, eg largish fermentationvessels are required. It is hoped to placea bulk order to gain a discount and saveon delivery charges.

Hi all,

Hope you have managed to enjoy thelovely warm weather we had in Julyand early August.

You will be pleased to hear Imanaged to fit in plenty of snoozes inthe sun in spite of my many duties atthe practice.

I am becoming a fully computerliterate feline and now have my ownfacebook page! It has been a lot tolearn, but I think I am getting thehang of it now and it is certainly fun.

I have been spending some time inthe practice reception recently as Ithought it was time I inspected thatarea again. I am pleased to reportthat my humans were suitablyaccommodating and made sure I hada lap to sit on whilst they carried onwith their work.

I am looking forward to Septemberas our Saturday helper Claire will becoming to the practice two days aweek to train as a Veterinary Nurse.Claire is very good to me and isexcellent at paying me attention.

Better go now and have my cat nap,

Gavin

2011: The 50th Anniversary of Amnesty International

Fifty years ago, in May 1961, outraged by the imprisonment of two Portuguese students fortoasting freedom, British lawyer, Peter Benenson, launched an “Appeal for Amnesty” in TheObserver newspaper. His appeal, reprinted worldwide, became the catalyst for theformation of Amnesty International.

In The Observer article Peter Benenson coined a new term - “prisoner of conscience”,defining this as “Any person who is physically restrained (by imprisonment or otherwise)from expressing (in any form of words or symbols) any opinion which he honestly holdsand which does not advocate or condone personal violence".

One of the first Amnesty adopted prisoners was Angolan poet, Dr Agostino Neto, wholater went on to become President of Angola. In 1977 Amnesty International won theNobel Peace Prize for its work.

Today Amnesty has 224,000 supporters in the UKalone and more than 3 million across the globe. Itswork is needed today as much as it was 50 yearsago. Peter Benenson said: “Only when the last prisonerof conscience has been freed, when the last torturechamber has been closed, when the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights is a reality forthe world’s people, will our work be done.”

The Wyre Forest group of Amnesty International will be holding a second-hand bookstall outside Bewdley Museum on Saturday September 10th.

Do come and support our work.

A band to be proud of!Bewdley Concert Band performed their first concert outside of Bewdley on Sunday 27th Julyand proved without doubt that they are an excellent ambassador for the Town. The band washired to play in Gheluvelt Park, Worcester as part of a season of performances sponsored byWorcester City Council.

The Band, which only formed nine months ago, looked fantastic in their new uniform. Theirroyal blue ties and cravats were bought for them by band member Derek Mc Cluskey. Theyalso showed off their Bewdley Concert Band stand banners bought with a grant fromBewdley Town Council.

Mrs Valerie Blount, secretary of the Band said “It was a wonderful afternoon for the band andthe audience. The bandstand is in the middle of a lake, it’s a lovely park, the sun shone down

on us and there were hundreds of peopleenjoying the atmosphere created by thecarefully chosen programme of music.”

The band is still welcoming new members. Ifyou play a woodwind or brass instrument andwish to join they rehearse on a Saturdaymorning at Bewdley Primary School. They areparticularly looking for Clarinet players.

Visitor numbers up at the Tourist Information CentreBewdley Tourist Information Centre had areally good summer season with visitornumbers being up once again. The weatherhas certainly worked in theirr favour andperhaps more people are taking short breaksnearer to home, rather than their usual oneor two weeks away.

Perhaps their most unusual phone call thissummer was from two visitors who werelocked in their bed and breakfastaccommodation with no obvious signs of how to get out and more importantly no sign ofbreakfast. They were getting quite distressed and wanted to call the police but were askedto give us a few minutes to sort it out. To the TIC it was just another day at the office andafter a few, admit rather frantic phone calls, they were able to summon help and thevisitors were rescued. Apart from being a little hungry they were none the worse for theirordeal.

Please remember that you can still purchase your Bewdley Festival tickets from us andthere are plenty of seats available for the daytime talks. In addition we have tickets for theFirst Anniversary Concert of the Bewdley Concert Band at St Anne’s Church on Saturday8 October at 7.30 pm. So please call in to see us you are always welcome.

Bewdley Library - new serviceand Age Concern information

The other night at home I was so bored that I endedup watching a video of Benny Hill’s ‘Ernie the FastestMilkman in the West’* onYouTube.

This is not something awoman with a family and a jobin an intellectually stimulatingplace such as a library shouldadmit, so why am I doing so?Because it reminded me howold I am.

We can’t do anything about getting older; spendingthousands on cosmetic procedures will only give atemporary boost, at best. Maybe the best thing to dois make sure we have the best life we can, all the timewe’ve got it.

Bewdley library provides a Housebound service forreaders who can no longer come into the library tochoose their books in person, and this can be a reallifeline for someone adjusting to reduced mobility.

We’ve also now got a regular visit from arepresentative of Age Concern, who will be in thelibrary on the first Thursday of every month, armedwith leaflets and information about help and supportavailable for the senior members of our community.

So if you know a reader who can’t get about anymore,or you need information about health or money in theadvancing years, come along and see us.

Dear Editor,Please can I correct some errors in the“View from the Redthorne” August article. There is a reference to a bottle kiln as beingon Dog Lane. Shown on an early 19thcentury painting by J. Wood, this kiln wasactually part of the Skey chemical workswhich was not on Dowles Brook but wasmuch closer to Bewdley. For those of us oldenough to remember it, the Bewdley GasWorks was built on the same site. Althoughthe exact use of the kiln, referred to as theRotunda in documents, is not known, it wasnot used for firing pottery.Charles Purcell

July and August at The Hop Pole Allotment Although like all gardeners we've been experiencing the problems associated with lack ofrain there have still been abundant yields on the allotment over the last two months.Courgettes, peas, mangetout, beetroot and broad beans have all been appearing on the pubmenu, an oven-baked risotto with beetroot being one of the more unusual items on offerrecently. Sweet peas from the garden have graced the pub's tables daily since mid June butas the plants succumb to mildew Cosmos flowers have begun to take their place. The basesof the runner and French bean plants are swathed with the lush foliage and pretty blue,trumpet-like flowers of shoofly (Nicandra), a plant much grown by cottage gardeners in thepast, usually by the kitchen door or under windows, to keep flies at bay.

Last but not least the hens are coming along very well, a couple of them having re-grown allof their feathers. They now all have names thanks to Shuttle readers who sent insuggestions and are a draw for children visiting with their parents. Not only have somechildren helped in feeding them but the birds stimulate lots of conversation about egg laying, the re-growth of their plumage and the way in which their well-being can be assessed fromthe colour of their combs; these are turning from white to a good healthy pinkish red.

The hens are so easy to look after and it's been very rewarding watching them grow strongand healthy after their battery cage ordeal. If you are thinking of getting a few hens, doconsider rescuing some ex battery birds; they will reward you. Val Austin

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1st AUGUST

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

Councillors received information from the Government about the “Beacon Project” whichaims to have 2012 Beacons lit across the country on Monday 4th June 2012 as part of theJubilee celebrations. The beacons can either be traditional bonfires on open ground or gas litflares erected on church towers. The Council is registering Bewdley as a place where aBeacon will be lit with a preference for having one lit on the St Anne’s Church Tower subjectto agreement with the Vicar and Diocesan Authorities.

Heritage Town Trail Markers

The Town Clerk had reported upon the loss (believed theft) of 12 of the Town Heritage Trailpavement markers. These act as guides for visitors and locals walking round the town andacross the river. Nine had gone from the Wribbenhall side and three from the town centre.Despite being fixed into and made flush with the pavement, they have been carefully prisedout by persons unknown. Councillors agreed to take advice as to replacing them with a non-metallic material to reduce risk of theft in the future.

Localism

Councillors agreed to set up a Working Group to look at the likely effect of the Localism Billcurrently going through Parliament and how it could impact on the Town Council.

Mayor’s Chain

The Mayor’s Chain is an important piece of civic regalia which was acquired by the thenBorough of Bewdley in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. However, during its history two of the 30 shields have become detached and are presumedlost and some repairs need to be carried out to the scrolls and the enamel. It was agreed thatreplicas of the shields should be made and the repairs should go ahead to restore it to its fullvalue.

Blackstone to Burlish 50 mph speed limit

Councillors agreed to support proposals by the County Council to put in place a 50 mphspeed limit on the B4195 from the Blackstone (by-pass) roundabout up through thesandstone cutting and onwards to Burlish where it becomes part of Stourport’s 30mph zone.
