Friends of Bewdley Museum

As we move towards Autumn The Friends of Bewdley Museum can reflect on a busy summer period. Feedback from the developments at the museum has been positive andvolunteers have been very, very active over the summer months. August began with a bang. The Friends hosted the 2009 Bewdley in Bloom prizegiving in the Guildhall, where over 30winners and their guests heard Central TV’s Keith Wilkinson enthuse that Bewdley was hisfavourite town in the area and how nice it was to arrive for a pleasant task to give out cupsrather than to report on the activities of the River Severn. After the prize giving The Friends attended the first of the music in gardens where they hadsponsored local talent Carrie Hayden. It was a lovely afternoon with the gardens full ofpeople and picnics. October will open with a thank you for all volunteers in the museum hosted by Wyre For-est District Council. Volunteers are an essential part of Bewdley Museum; they add somuch to the visitor experience from staging brass rubbing, opening the Air Raid Shelter andnew Front of House role, meeting and greeting visitors who want more information. If youare interested in volunteering please telephone Carol Mathieson on 01299 400386 formore information. You can also help by joining The Friends, only £5 a year, leaflets are avail-able in the museum and you will know that you too are doing your bit for Bewdley and themuseum.

Editorial

Now that autumn is in the wings, I often wake up to the rather beautifulsight of the river down in the valley wearing a cosy fleece of white mistalong its length. I was musing on this the other Sunday as I walked along

Severnside North on my way home from church, this time in sunshine. The stretch ofriverside was full of people sitting at the tables, ambling along its length or leaning over therailings watching the swans. The adults were sitting in the sun chatting, the children wereapplying ice cream to their faces, and over all was a cosy smell of fish and chips. Everyonelooked as happy as the reserved Brits can allow themselves; some were even laughing.

I felt pretty mellow too as I reflected that most of these people had to leave Bewdleylater and go back home; I was staying put. You know, I find it very easy to become blaséand critical about our town; we all grumble about the narrow congested streets and lackof car parking; about yet another set of roadworks or the steep hills we labour up withour shopping. Yet we live in a town people get in their cars to come and enjoy; we haveour river but also our forest and those hills that give us some superb views fromunexpected corners of roads round town. (Can I recommend the top of Tudor Road forthose of you who haven’t tried that end of town?)

So let’s open our eyes even wider as we walk around our town. Let’s congratulateourselves on choosing to live in a corner of the West Midlands that takes a deal of beatingwhen it comes to sheer beauty. And let’s take every chance of welcoming all those peoplewho come here because they think so too.

Maggie Says GoodbyeThe path of life leads us in many directions, my pathdoes not have many twists and turns.

My path to become a florist started in my 20s, but as Iworked full time I could not take the course.

The next change was when the boys came along andas everyone knows who has children it’s a full timeoccupation.

A few years after that, my husband decided to open anursery for plants and once it became successful I was able to start floristry training. I studied for five years and then my first venture into running my own flower business wasat the nursery and it became very busy. By this time we were coming to the end of runninga nursery so I came to town at the back of Timmis’s new shop complex. That was in 1995.16 months after opening in Timmis’s I moved to where you know me – Maggie’s Florist,Load Street.

In total I have worked in Bewdley town for 14 years and enjoyed every minute of it. Thiswas a good time in my life. Lots of laughter, jokes, enjoyment, and customers.

A lot of customers became friends; you see them regularly and talk about what’s been happening in theirs and my life since last you saw them.

I’d like to think a florist’s job has many hats: supporter, listener, adviser, fundraiser, and friend.

That brings me to additional interests in town life. I became a member of the Chamber ofTrade, Christmas Lights Festival, and of course, one of the Chamber Maids. We are threeladies and one gentleman who organise events to support Bewdley Town.We have organised the French Market, St. Georges Day, the Art Event, and the Pumpkin Festival. We have a lot of support and this is what Bewdley Town life is all about. Support, unity, friendship, joy, happiness; who could ask for more?

Thank you once again to the people of Bewdley. I take my hat off to you!

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home tofind and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work isover, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle.Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expandyour horizons?

If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings sosee if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we caneven arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for aninformal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts- just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like tobe able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

The fete, held at the Button Oak pub on1st August was, despite the torrential rain, agreat success.

Cate Gillespie, one of the organisers gained the attention of the waiting crowdby manically wielding a teapot and tomatoslice (stolen from the white elephant stall).Local entrepreneur and passionate supporter of Bewdley, Dale Permenter ofDRP films, opened the fete and was presented with a bottle of red wine in appreciation.

Huge “thank you’s” go to Mrs Susan Pricefor organising the main raffle; Robert Mayfor persuading numerous vintage car owners to display their spectacular vehicles, still amazingly shiny despite the weather;Mr Bernard Leighton, for the use of his

field, adjacent to the pub; Dave Grainger, who at the last minute delivered bark chippings for the gateway. Finally to Tonyand Sue, landlords of the Button Oak pubwho generously let all this mayhem go onin their beautifully mown gardens.

It really was great fun and the general humour held out as numerous stall holdersand car booters fought all afternoon tokeep their goods dry(ish)! Meanwhile thebattle for the Tug of War slip, slided its wayacross the adjoining field in glorious mud!

Thank you again to everyone who supported, you were all heroes making itpossible for us to raise £1500+ which willbe shared by Community TransportHelpline and Parish works.

Autumn is on itsway

So far the weather has been a reallymixed bag this summer and now wemove to September, the first of the

autumnal months. Although we may havenice days, they become much shorter andwe can at the end of the month expectheavy dew and mists and perhaps the firstmorning frosts.

September is a month for harvesting fruits,if for storage just before they are ripe, preparing for the end of the vigorousgrowing season by tidying lawns andborders, cutting back herbaceous plants, deadheading of roses, control of mildew

and those recalcitrant greenflies. Believe itor not it’s also time to think about bulbsagain. Plan where you think clumps willlook best; maybe between shrubs orherbaceous plants or even in the rockery.

Again as we look forward to spring, think ofthe vegetables that might be needed nextyear and get an early start under glass or inthe greenhouse. In sheltered areas sowlettuce under glass for overwintering; sweetpeas can be started from seed at the end ofthe month. Take cuttings of evergreenshrubs such as geraniums and hydrangeas;take good care of chrysanthemums anddahlias, as they move towards their best.Enjoy what’s left of the warm days.

The benefits and pleasures of gardening…Potatoes, cabbages, onions, leeks, courgettes, squash, peas and beans!

These are just some of the things that are being harvested by the gar-deners of Bewdley at the moment. What enormous pleasure (and of course health enhancing physical exertion!) is associated with thegrowing, harvesting and eating of our own produce.

If you have been inspired by produce shows over the last few weeksbut haven’t yet started growing things yourself, why not start now andplan for next year. And, if you don’t have a plot of land to garden, would like someone else to grow vegetables in a garden that is too bigfor you to manage, or would be interested in allotment type plots inBewdley itself, then do phone me, on 401109.

Finally if you are interested in other local community sustainability issues, please contactthe Bewdley Development Trust, tel. 405516, email [email protected] or look atwww.bewdley.org.uk.

Community News

Dear readers,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you all as the latest addition to the Bewdley & Rural Local Policing Team. I thought I would share withyou all a little about myself and why I choseto become a Community Support Officer.

Since I can remember I have always wantedto be a member of the Police and to be in aposition to help, assist and support others. In my opinion there is nothing better thanbeing part of a warm and friendly communityand a committed local policing team thattries to make positive changes happen.

I am continuing to settle into the role, whichup till now has provided many steep learningcurves and challenges. However, I would liketo assure you all I am up to any challengesthat Bewdley chooses to put to me and willalways aim to do my best.

My previous employment has consisted of arange of different roles but mainly workingfor a large utility company as a ComplaintsManager. One of my many memorable complaints was dealing with an elderly ladywho had had a collection of plates which her

late husband had bought her, accidentallydamaged by the engineer. I researched thecollection and was able to get her replacements delivered to her door, un-known to her. When she took delivery ofthe plates she called me up in tears of joy. Ibelieve that dealing with complaints gave mesome of the skills required for my currentrole.

Whilst I would love to do this for everyoneon every occasion, I will only be able to dowhat I can within the remit of my position,so sadly I won’t be fixing your smashed window or replacing your stolen car or jewellery. What I will try and do is preventsuch things happening in the first place!

Finally, I would like to say thank you for thekind hearted welcome that I have been givenand I look forward to meeting you all whenout and about, or at one of our PACTmeetings at 6.30 p.mWednesday 9th September(at The Baptist Church, High St, Bewdley) or on Wednesday 18th November(at The Bewdley School & 6th Form Centre).

Best wishes,Nicky.CSO 40009 Nicholla FiceBewdley & Rural Local Policing Team

OctoberFest 2009As we enjoy the summer weather (am I tempting fate here?) it is that time of year again toremind you that all the festival fringe events throughout the month of October will besummarised as OctoberFest.

Last year 8,000 flyers were distributed throughout the Wyre Forest and beyond and manysaid that they were surprised how much is going on in the town. There is always greatmusic in the pubs around the town and last year’s blues event at the Packhorse was awelcome addition. However, the one area missing is comedy.

This year we are ahead of ourselves as a number of people have already told us about theirplans including a Performance Poet, a Cricket Dinner at the Royal Foresters, a Petanquecompetition, an Art Exhibition at the Quay Gallery, Creative Writing at the Museum, Applepressing & Cider festival, and a French Market & Pumpkin festival at the end of the month. So get your thinking caps on and let us know what you are planning so that your event canbe included in this year’s flyer.

Our Town HistoryBewdley in the early 16th century

John Leland, English antiquary and library keeper to King Henry VIII has been described as“the father of English local history”, between 1540 and 1546 he travelled through Englandand Wales making notes as he went. The majority of his notes still survive including hisdescription of Bewdley nearly five hundred years ago.

Leland recalls that the land between Kidderminster and Bewdley was a gentle incline, somewhat barren, and that the town of Bewdley was approached by a newly built greatstone bridge linking the counties of Worcestershire and Shropshire. The town of itselfconsisted of just three memorable streets (these streets are now known to us as Severnside, Load Street and High Street), with Tickenhill Park on the hillside above thetown surrounded by the Wyre Forest. Load Street served as a market place at this timeand the timber chapel of ease (now St. Anne's Church) stood at the heart of the townwith the parish church located at Ribbesford one mile down river.

He was clearly impressed with the beauty of the town and he says that at sunrise thewhole town glittered as if made from gold because all of the buildings were newly built. He spoke to a Bewdley merchant who confirmed that the town had been just a poorhamlet until the stone bridge was completed and the town had been rebuilt as the resultof the business generated by the new bridge. Bewdley Reggatta 2009

Pictures by Gary Mayner

After a dodgy forecast the sun shone on thefirst day of the Regatta, as crews from all over the country arrived in Bewdley tocompete.

The scent of sun-cream and burgers hung inthe air, with the shouts of encouragementfrom supporters who lined the banks on bothsides of the river.

The youngest competitors were only 11 or 12,and the oldest were experienced rowers intheir 60’s; the races ranged from single scullersto boats with 8 rowers and a cox.

Bewdley had many successes;- a group fromthe Pub and Club regatta earlier this yearstormed through to ‘win their novice pot’, iewin a qualifying race which takes them ontothe second rung of the status-ladder of rowing points. As well as a pewter tankard, they also won the opportunity to give theircoach (our club captain) an impromptu swim! There were other wins (and swims!) for Be-wdley crews, as well as some hard-foughtraces.

In spite of Sunday’s weather not being ideal, there were more exciting races, including adead-heat between 2 scullers which had to bere-rowed. This was probably more entertain-ing for the spectators than the competitors!

All in all a fabulous weekend;- and next yearwe’ll do it all again! Melanie Gunn

September in the ForestFor over a month now I have been pickingjuicy blackberries from the hedgerows andkeeping my eye on my favourite elderberrytree for vitamin C-packed syrup and purpleelderberry wine.

This could be a good time to look for mush-rooms and toadstools if the weather is right– the best conditions are found after a fewdays of heavy rain following a dry spell. Thefungi we see are the reproductive parts ofthe organisms which exist as hyphal threadsin soil, in leaf litter or other dead material.

In the 1920s Carleton Rea found 1,391species of fungi in the Wyre Forest (according to Norman Hickin in “The natural history of an English forest”). Thisscore outdoes both Epping Forest and theNew Forest, despite the latter being aboutten times the area. However, no-one reallyknows what the total is now. The Wyre For-est Study Group have records of about 700species and new ones are found every year. What is certain is that the more you look(and the more people look), the more youfind. If you’d like to become a fungus spotterwe have 2 events to help you learn: on Sep-tember 26th there is a Fungus Workshopfrom 10am to 4pm at the Discovery Centre(including a foray into the woods) to learnwhat fungi are, how they live and which aresafe to eat. Adults only, £25 each. There willalso be a Fungus Foray into the woods onSunday 4th October. The morning walk(10.30am – 12.30) will start at the Earnwoodcar park, and the afternoon (2pm – 4pm) atHawkbatch. The cost is £6 each and you willneed a basket, small knife and a notebook.Lunch may be purchased from the VisitorCentre. Booking is required – please call01299 266929.

We’re getting ready for the Grow With WyreAutumn Festival around the Forestry Com-mission’s Wyre Forest Visitor Centre on 3rdand 4th October. This time there will beexciting demonstrations of traditional forestwork including horse logging, charcoal mak-ing, fence post cleaving and greenwood turn-ing on a pole lathe.

Local apple and pear growers are being en-couraged not only to bring their own fruitfor juicing but also to have the varieties iden-tified by experts. There will also be localproduce for sale, children’s crafts, chainsawcarving and the all-important seed gatheringwhich will help to create a bank of youngtrees ready for planting back into localhedgerows and woods as part of the GrowWith Wyre special trees and hedgerowsproject. TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3 AUGUST 2009

Air Quality in Welch Gate

Councillors were concerned to learn from local residents in Welch Gate that contrary topromises made earlier, very little if anything had happened to overcome some of the trafficproblems in Welch Gate. It still had some of the highest levels of pollution in the WyreForest area in the form of nitrous oxide. They noted correspondence betweenWorcestershire County Council and some of the Welch Gate residents that had indicatedsome trial traffic management measures would be put in place but nothing had happened. There was however a fresh promise from the County Council to produce some designs togo out to consultation and hence the Town Council agreed to look again at the matter at itsnext meeting in September.

Flower beds and flower tubs

Councillors agreed to write to Wyre Forest District Council seeking an assurance thatBewdley was not losing out when it came to expenditure on flower beds and tubs in thetown. There had been some reductions in the planting this year as a result of budgetarymeasures but it seemed that Kidderminster was still able to have some magnificent displays. It was recognised that the funding for those could come from elsewhere and so Councillorsasked the District Council for a financial breakdown of expenditure and to check thatallocations on a per capita basis to the two towns were equal.

Speed Activated Signs

With funding available, local County Councillor John Campion had asked the Council if itwould like to nominate up to three locations for the siting of these devices to help to reduce speeding within the Bewdley Division. Councillors welcomed the opportunity andput forward Long Bank, Dowles Road and Cleobury Road for consideration.

Heritage Sunday

The Council agreed once again to open up The Guildhall on Heritage Sunday which this yeartakes place on Sunday 13th September during the afternoon and hoped members of thepublic would take the opportunity to come down and look around the building and learnabout its history and some of the traditions that we are keen to maintain.

Future Town Council meetings: 1 September, 5 October, 2 November, 30 November, 4 January Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the NoticeBoards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall and Load Street Car Park, in theLibrary and the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page ofwww.bewdley.org.uk.and on the My Parish page of www.worcestershire.gov.uk

Bewdley MuseumThe ever popular summer holiday activities kicked off with claypipe painting in the newly refurbished saw yard area. This drop-in activity was one of several which complemented thisyear’s extended range of pre-booked workshops. Throughoutthe summer, children enjoyed creating colourful artwork, throughlearning new techniques and skills such as batik and mosaic. To coincide with the London 2012 Open Weekend at the end ofJuly, museum staff created a colourful Olympic themed Gardenarea. More than 100 youngsters added their own brightly decorated flowers and pebbles to the garden. The event alsopresented the opportunity to promote Worcestershire’s ‘RaisingOur Game’ brand and logo. Local garden designer Judy Knight,

who helped to inspire the museum garden, also judged Josh Macuean, aged 10, as the de-served winner of the Olympic themed garden design competition. This month sees the return of the Schools Education programme after its summer break. This is a unique resource for schools wishing to access a wide range of cross-curricularstudies. The highly successful Blitz and Evacuation programme is already fully booked forthis year. The Education Service is looking forward to working with schools and other groups todeliver new and exciting activities, whilst keeping to the Museum catchphrase ‘A surprisearound every corner’.

GGrrooww wwiitthh WWyyrreeGrow with Wyre is funding the restoration of 15 orchards plus three exemplar communityand education orchards across the Wyre Forest area. Seven orchards have already been supported by the project. We are looking for people who would like to plant or re-instate an orchard to get in!If you live in the project area, (see the map above), please [email protected] or call 01299 269 048 for an application form.

OOrrcchhaarrdd WWiillddlliiffeeTraditional orchards combine fruit trees, grassland and hedgerow. They provide homes formany plants and animals because they provide this variety of habitats. This is important be-cause many bumblebee species, which help pollinate the fruit trees, need tussocky grassland for nesting in summer and hedgerows to hibernate under in winter. Many beetles which eat live wood as larvae, feed on the flowers of tall herbs such as hogweedand wild angelica and hawthorn as adults.

Dead and dying trees with ‘veteran features’ such as hollow trunks and rot holes providethe most important habitat for nesting birds and rare insects.

Traditional orchards are important habitats for amphibians, mammals and birds. A varietyof bats forage over traditional orchards, Dormice and many wild birds forage and live inthe hedges surrounding them. Even amphibians like frogs and Great Crested Newts maybe found in orchards that have ponds, because the rough grassland provides foraging for in-sects, with fallen logs for shelter in winter. Foxes and badgers will eat fallen fruit and havebeen seen reaching up to pick fruit from low branches!

Wildlife needs trees of different ages within the orchard. Sadly many orchards have justtrees of the same age group, or might be too small to support much wildlife. Grow withWyre is helping not just by restoring orchards but also by giving away fruit trees for hedgerows and orchards. If you’d like free trees or more information please contact [email protected] or call 01299 269 048.
