The Art of the StealFraud & Scams Seminar

Former con artist extraordinaire Frank Abagnale is one of the world’s most respected authorities on forgery, embezzlement and secure documents. For more than 30 years, Abagnale has worked with hundreds of fi nancial institutions, corporations and government agencies around the world.

His exploits and fi ve-year international crime spree inspired the memoir, Catch Me if You Can, which later became a fi lm directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. Abagnale served time in French, Swedish and U.S. prison systems before being released on the condition that he would help the federal government, without remuneration, by teaching and assisting federal law enforcement agencies.

Abagnale will describe the latest protections against embezzlement, forgery, counterfeit currency, check fraud, identity theft and Internet fraud for institutions, associations and corporations. He will explain the newest crime techniques made easy by technology as well as your organization’s potential liability under the new Uniform Commercial Code.

Abagnale’s presentation will be followed by a panel of law enforcement agents who will review cases studies, all of which have local connections, of successful and attempted fraud schemes that have been conducted against businesses. Businesses that were victims of fraud will not be identifi ed by name, but they range from some of the largest businesses in the area to smaller, one- or two-person businesses and include retailers, law fi rms, banks, and utilities. Th e panel includes:

Mari Ossenfort was named director of broadcasting for Forum Communications in November and oversees WDAY-TV in Fargo as the general manager. She grew up in Fargo, but has lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., since 1995 where she worked for a local television station, most recently serving as general manager and general sales manager.

Mike Artnson serves as plant manager at Cardinal IG and is regarded as a manufacturing and leadership expert who understands business. He has been in charge of plant operations since 1998 when the Fargo Cardinal IG facility was built, and his leadership has been instrumental in growing the business.

Jodi Duncan is currently serving as president of Flint Communications, Inc., with a focus on business development and strategic account planning. She has built a career around strategically planning for her clients and helping them get the right message to the right audience to meet their objectives.

Steve Swiontek is chairman, president and CEO at Gate City Bank. He has been with the company for the duration of his career, amassing experience in personnel management and branch leadership. Beyond his duties at the bank, Swiontek is active in the community, serving on numerous committees, boards and within associations.

Laney Packs House For Leadership LuncheonMore than 300 people attended the February Business Training session to hear Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney discuss his leadership philosophy and how he motivates his team to serve the public with honor, integrity and character.

Laney opened his presentation by explaining his background, highlighting experiences that helped shape his leadership style. As a servant leader and native of West Fargo, Laney felt compelled to run for elected office so he could serve the people of Cass County; he won in 2007 and said he reminds himself every day as he leaves for work that he has been given the privilege to serve the public through his job.

During the last seven years, Laney has implemented a Drive the Road leadership philosophy that embraces individual leadership styles while maintaining a high standard for professionalism, which has resulted in improved morale among his team members. His team members are introduced to the concept on their first day, and they have to commit to upholding the philosophy before they join the team.

“By introducing them to the concept right away, they know the expectations from Minute 1,” Laney explained. By knowing the philosophy immediately, they can better understand how it works and live it out as they perform their job duties, he said.

Laney talked about how clear expectations make accountability imperative to success in an organization. “High accountability leads to high morale,” he said.

Leadership Class Learns About Company Culture and Thinking Big

The Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class spent a day AT Concordia College's Offutt School of Business in February learning about navigating change, touring a new business school and thinking big.

Change vs. TransitionAssistant Dean of Student Life at North Dakota State University Michael Harwood shared his experiences with managing transition and change. Harwood has worked with various organizations on navigating change and helped them develop strategies to prepare, train and develop staff in a transition worthy organization.

Think Big: Company CultureSundog CEO Brent Teiken and Greg Ewing-Lee, the company’s director of Business Analysis, shared insights about how the company has become a leader in innovative corporate culture. Teiken and Ewing-Lee explained that the

company serves its clients so well by understanding how their goals can provide strategies for success.

Think Big: Dream to RealityThree founders of local companies wrapped up the day by sharing how each of them came up with and implemented their idea for a company and how they’ve turned their dreams into reality. Scott Bintz, RealTruck.com, highlighted his company’s start as an online pickup truck accessories store operating out of a basement to the 15-year-old organization it is now that seeks to make people’s vehicles and lives better. Aaron Hill, Fargo Brewing Company, detailed how a random idea to have a Fargo-based brewery turned into establishing a limited liability company. Jake Joraanstad, Myriad Mobile, explained that his company started as dual partnership between two college friends and has evolved into a collaborative, innovative work environment where they do cool stuff every day.

The class toured the new Offutt School of Business with Greg Cant, dean of the school. Cant showed the class the state-of-the-art classrooms the facility offers.


Advocacy in ActionChamber Testifies for Water Supply Project

Chamber President and CEO Craig Whitney testified before the North Dakota Legislature’s Water Topics Overview committee, which met in Fargo in early February. “The Chamber understands the increase in residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural water use places a growing demand on existing water supplies that will be inadequate during periods of drought,” Whitney noted, citing a policy position from The Chamber’s 2014 Public Policy Guide. The Chamber supports the prioritization and advancement of the Red River Valley Water Supply Project to ensure the availability of a long-term, high-quality water supply.

Moorhead Intersection Project Aims to Address CongestionThe Public Affairs transportation subcommittee has been studying proposed design solutions to the Moorhead intersection at Interstate 94 and Highway 75 (8th Street). Because of unique issues surrounding the existing interchange and the heavy traffic flow, engineers have presented alternate design plans for consideration. The transportation committee reviewed the interchange designs and provided input to project engineers. The project will be funded by Minnesota Trunk Highway funds and will be completed in one construction cycle.

The Chamber looks forward to the completed project, which will significantly increase mobility and safety while reducing delays on both 8th Street and I-94, allowing easier access to the businesses in the area.

The timeline for the project is set for construction in 2016, and the project has a preliminary cost estimate of $7-$12 million.

Repealing Business Taxes a Priority During Upcoming Session

The Chamber has called on Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and state lawmakers to improve the business climate in Minnesota by repealing the stifling business-to-business taxes enacted during the 2013 legislative session. Additionally, The Chamber supports appropriations necessary to complete Moorhead’s flood protection projects and promote economic development initiatives for Greater Minnesota.

National Guard Prepares for Potential Flood EventThe North Dakota National Guard conducted its annual preparation for potential flood response operations, an engagement soldiers are all too familiar with. Last year, soldiers and airmen spent 656 work days from April 22 to May 2 providing around-the-clock flood response in areas within Cass County. North Dakota National Guardsmen have helped local, state and federal agencies battle river and overland flooding every year except one since 2009. For this, and many other reasons, The Chamber is thankful to have a strong National Guard presence in our community.

Honor Star Program Contributes to USS North Dakota Commissioning

The vision of the Honor Star program is to foster a community of support for our service members, their families and the missions they carry out on our behalf. What better way to share that support than with the critical mission of the nuclear submarine that will bear the name of North Dakota? The USS North Dakota will be celebrated and commissioned on May 31. The Honor Star program is pleased to support a mission that will serve our country for decades to come.

Eric Marts: My State of the Union ExperienceRetired Master Sgt. Eric Marts shared his experience as a guest of Sen. Heidi Heitkamp at the State of the Union. “I was shocked by the call but it was an invitation I had to take advantage of," said Marts. Following the State of the Union, Marts spent the rest of the week in Washington D.C. talking to leaders in Congress and the Pentagon about issue’s facing today’s veterans. While serving in Iraq, Marts was riding in a vehicle that was struck by roadside bombs, resulting in the loss of his eyesight and a traumatic brain injury. Marts serves on the Military Affairs committee and hosts Heroes of the Heart Land, a talk show that airs Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. on WDAY-AM. He continues to serve by sharing veterans’ stories and concerns and providing family and community support.

Governor Set to Decorate Local Businessman with State’s Highest Honor

North Dakota’s highest honor will be presented to the family of Herman Stern, former manager of the famous Straus Clothing in recognition of the man’s leadership and vision. Stern died in 1980. His grandsons, John and Rick Stern, now run the clothing store, which has been a Chamber member since 1938.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple will present Sterns’ family with the North Dakota Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award, the highest commendation for citizens, on March 13 at the Radisson Hotel Fargo. Visit www.ndchamber.com to register for the event.

A native of Germany, Stern immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 to work at the Straus Clothing Store in Casselton, becoming manager in 1910 and working there for the next 70 years.

While Stern is most known for his business contributions, he also founded the Greater North Dakota Association, now known as the Greater North Dakota Chamber. Stern also helped start the Winter Show in Valley City, which has become the oldest running agricultural show in the state. Stern was also active with Boy Scouts of America, Rotary and the Masonic Order.

“When you think of a leader and visionary whose contributions have impacted generations of North Dakotans, Stern rises to the top,” Dalrymple said. “In addition to building a successful business, he made pioneering contributions to North Dakota’s economy and communities…His dedication to helping others and to building a strong foundation for our state has forged a legacy that lives on in North Dakota.”

In addition to his civic contributions, Stern worked with state leaders and the U.S. State Department during the rise of Adolf Hilter and the Nazi Party to help approximately 200 German Jews escape the Holocaust and immigrate to the United States. On Stern’s 70th birthday in 1967, many of those individuals he helped escape recognized him with a framed resolution of appreciation for his inspiring generosity, according to a press release from the Office of the Governor. The Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York also honored Stern for his efforts.

“We are so honored to accept this prestigious award on behalf of our grandfather,” said John Stern, spokesperson for the Stern family. “His contributions to our family and our state are significant and his vision continues to guide Straus Clothing and the state of North Dakota still today. We are proud that Herman is being honored for his valuable accomplishments and that his legacy will live on as a member of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders.”

Did You Know?The Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award was established in 1961 to recognize present and former North Dakotans who have influenced the state by achieving national recognition; Stern will be the 40th recipient of the award.

Other individuals who have been honored include Lawrence Welk, Roger Maris, Eric Sevareid, Anne Carlsen, Louis L’Amour, Era Bell Thompson, Ronald Davies, Phil Jackson, Sister Thomas Welder, Bill Marcil, Doug Burgum and Ronald Offutt.

We stopped in to say hello to the staff at Dell Comm, Inc., where they offer installation for all inside and outside data, voice and video networking systems consisting of copper, fiber optic, coaxial cabling and wireless LANs design.

Member ProfileCI Sport Embraces New Technology For

Growth and Improved QualityMany say that growth in the technology field has had the largest impact on workforce in the 21st century. From snail mail to email or file cabinets to the Cloud, it’s easy to see that our offices do not look the way they once did. CI Sport is one Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber member that reaps the benefits of advancement in technology on an hourly basis.

Not long ago CI Sport was using floppy disks to save individual designs and walking them over to load onto the manufacturing machines. Now, graphic artists use state-of-the-art design software that can wirelessly communicate with machines with just the click of a button. Not only has this sped up production time, it has also catapulted CI Sport into the nationwide company it is today.

Started in Bismarck in 1990 to outfit bars and restaurants with their apparel needs, Creative Imprintz took off and quickly found its way to Fargo. They moved into a small office above the Old Broadway, knowing there was room for growth. Soon, that growth prompted hiring more employees and changing the name from Creative Imprintz to CI Apparel and finally to CI Sport. The company has more than 110 employees and customers in 48 states.

Having gone from just one manual screen printing press to an entire floor dedicated to screen printing and another floor dedicated to embroidery, CI Sport is a key player in the apparel industry. The entire production process happens in Fargo, making the company one of the largest manufacturers in North Dakota. According to CI Sport Human Resources Executive Bree Duval that is something that makes the company unique in the custom apparel industry. It also allows staff members to provide quick, quality customer service to their clients. That means staff members can literally “stop the presses” if a question arises about whether the company is delivering the best possible product to its clients.

Collegiate apparel is one of its largest product categories. CI Sport supplies to college bookstores and athletic teams for school and team apparel. Last fall, CI Sport was the official supplier of North Dakota State University ESPN GameDay apparel. Corporate apparel is also a very important sector of the company’s portfolio. Assisting companies with uniforms and various other apparel needs keeps staff members busy year round.

One very important aspect in CI Sport’s company culture is the relationship with the Fair Labor Association. Since 2001, CI Sport exclusively uses garment suppliers that strictly adhere to the Fair Labor Associations guidelines to ensure the employees are treated equally with rights, compensation and work in safe environments.

AAA North Dakota, along with AAA Minnesota-Iowa, donated $5,000 to Northern Lights SADD, a peer-to-peer education, prevention and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, teen violence and teen suicide.

Aarsvold Anderson Bye Maras

Jon Aarsvold was promoted to senior vice president/commercial finance risk manager; Kathryn Anderson was hired as a credit officer; Heidi Bye was promoted to senior vice president/credit manager; and Toni Maras was promoted to senior vice president/loan administration at Bell State Bank & Trust. Aarsvold received bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and economics from the University of North Dakota and has been in the banking field for 28 years. Anderson earned a business management degree from Concordia College and has been in the banking field for five years. Bye earned a bachelor’s degree in business with a major in banking and finance from the University of North Dakota and has been in the banking field for 23 years. Maras earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance and has been with Bell State Bank & Trust for 16 years.

Hill

Jennifer Hill, Bell State Bank & Trust, earned the Qualified 401(k) Administrator credential from the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries. The credential recognizes mastery of retirement plan fundamentals, as well as expertise in the administration and compliance of 401(k) plans.

Bethany Retirement Living was awarded a number of customer experience awards from Pinnacle Quality Insight. Qualifying for the awards displays a continued dedication to providing best in class senior healthcare services. The Skilled Nursing facility at Bethany on 42nd was recognized in eight categories: overall satisfaction, cleanliness, communication from facility, response to problems, recommend facility to others, activities, safety and security, and overall customer experience. The Skilled Nursing facility at Bethany on University received awards in six categories: overall satisfaction, laundry service, communication from facility, response to problems, safety and security, and overall customer experience. The Gables Senior Living at Bethany on 42nd was honored in six categories: overall satisfaction, personal care, cleanliness, dignity and respect, move-in process, and safety and security.

Hummel

Dawn Hummel was named senior executive of resident care at Bethany Retirement Living. Hummel received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Concordia College/Tri-College University.

Rena Stenseth joined Choice Financial as director of human resources. Stenseth brings extensive human resources and banking experience to her new role with more than seven years of experience as an HR director.

Choice Financial contributed nearly $194,000 to the North Dakota Housing Incentive Fund (HIF), with funds supporting projects that will provide affordable housing in Fargo, Grafton and Dickinson. Timothy P. Sayler was hired as the chief operating officer for Essentia Health’s West Region, overseeing facilities in North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. Most recently, Sayler served as chief executive officer/president of the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho.

Essentia Health is partnering with an online convenient care service called virtuwell. Launched in 2010 by HealthPartners, virtuwell is an online convenient care service where patients can be diagnosed and treated for more than 40 common health concerns for a fee of $45.

The HoDo Lounge & Restaurant earned a spot on AAA’s 2014 list of Four Diamond Restaurants. The AAA Four and Five Diamond Ratings are the travel authority’s highest designations for hotels and restaurants. The HoDo Restaurant made the Four-Diamond list for the first time in 2013, becoming the first North Dakota restaurant to ever make the annual list.

The North Dakota State University Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Established by Congress and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the program provides undergraduate research opportunities to first-generation, income-eligible and under-represented students who are pursuing graduate education, a doctoral degree and a career where a doctorate is a prerequisite. NDSU was one of the original 14 universities to host the program.

North Dakota State University has awarded the first master’s degrees from a first-of-its-kind cooperative program between NDSU and the University of North Dakota. Erin Loeb earned a Master of Public Health degree with a specialization in the management of infectious diseases. The Master of Public Health program offers diverse tracks in public health that builds upon the strengths of both campuses to meet the practical needs of the public and health care practitioners who serve it.

Donald Miller, professor and chair of pharmacy practice at North Dakota State University, was appointed to a three-year term on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Arthritis Advisory Committee. Miller was a member of an FDA panel in July that evaluated data on the safety and effectiveness of the prescription drugs Cimzia and Humira as treatment for spondyloarthritide disorders, or inflammatory back arthritis.

Cory Fong was hired as public affairs senior specialist for Odney. Fong previously worked as the North Dakota State Tax Commissioner.

NDSU’s Innovation Week Showcases Student Innovation

North Dakota State University and the NDSU Research and Technology Park, Inc., will host the fifth annual Innovation Week March 3-7, to showcase and encourage students’ innovative work. The week includes the culmination of an innovation competition for students, educational sessions and networking opportunities.

“The innovative ideas of the NDSU students are truly phenomenal,” said Chuck Hoge, interim executive director of the NDSU Research and Technology Park. “Innovation Challenge is an organized way for students to present their ideas, earn prize money and learn more about the process of turning ideas into commercial ventures.”

The highlight of Innovation Week is the third annual Innovation Challenge. Student teams have competed throughout the school year, and the top 20 present their ideas for new, progressive products, services or corn-based innovations. Judges award the top innovation in each category $5,000. A total of $20,000 will be awarded to winning teams. The North Dakota Corn Growers Association is a major sponsor of the competition.

The first two innovation competitions yielded numerous entrepreneurial ideas, including a novel dental implant, aphasia therapy for professionals and an encapsulation material used for cancer drug delivery.

Several participants, including last year’s best-in-show winner Erin Nyren-Erickson, have launched companies based on innovations they entered in the competition. Nyren-Erickson’s test for finding contaminants in a widely used blood-thinning drug became a springboard for her new company, HQC Biosciences Inc. The company creates easy-to-use identification tools for biological compounds or targets. Her office is located in the NDSU Research and Technology Park, where she has access to resources available for start-ups.
