Helping to transform the lives of people inthe third worldImagine living in a tin shack in a squatter camp in the blazing heat in theDominican Republic. The roof leaks when it rains (and it certainly rains a lot!),

you have no running water or toilet and you cook on a coal fire. Your bed is on bricks sothat when the rats and snakes come in they can’t get toyou. You share one outside toilet with dozens ofothers (and there is no flush!).

Hard to imagine? Well that’s what the team fromBewdley Baptist Church witnessed over and over againduring their recent two week trip.

Now imagine a group of Christians paying forthemselves to come to your country and raising money

for new houses, schools and churches. Thanks to the vision and drive of Elio and LenaMadonia that is what is happening.

Over 20 years ago, when on holiday Elio went for a walk, got lost and found the hiddenDominican Republic. After much heart searching he decided to do something and build ahouse – this year, thanks to that vision, the 1,000th house will be built. And you can add fiveschools, five clinics and 10 churches in the nine new villages.

The 11 people from Bewdley Baptist worked on the building site for two weeks paintingwindows, making rebar foundations, mixing concrete… to name a few. The team paid fortheir own flights and accommodation and raised enough money to build nearly four newhouses. They also went to a hospital and gave out toiletries and toys for children and olderpatients and helped with a number of church services in remote squatter camps.

“One of the highlights of the trip has to be thelast day on site. After working in the morning, wewent to the squatter camp just across the trackand visited six families to tell them that they weregetting a house.” said David Glenn. “To see thesqualor that they have to live in and knowing thatwe had played a small part in helping to transformtheir lives was very emotional.”

Like to know more about the trip call David on 401953 email [email protected]

Bewdley schools add their supportIn the last edition of the Bridge, we reported on the £4,000raised by Bewdley School and Sixth Form School towards anew school in the Dominican Republic. Bewdley Primary hasdonated just under £200 from their Harvest Festival events. This money will go towards a new school being built that theteam from Bewdley also visited. Currently the children aretaught in an old house - one classroom being the garage.

The team with the six families that theyhelp to rehouse - Elio and Lena on right

Don’t panic - Margaret is only having one month off! Stepping into theeditor’s shoes is a daunting task! What on earth can I write about?Margaret seems to do it so well and so easily - all Martin and I (we lookafter the design and artwork) have to do is drop her text into place.

Well - there is only one thing to write it about this time of year - yesChristmas!

As we come up to Christmas, it is almost impossible to avoid theseemingly endless adverts on TV that imply that you have to spend lots ofmoney to ensure you have a happy Christmas. The stores seem to start selling Christmasearlier and earlier and lights may be turned on months in advance of the main event.

But putting together the Bridge this month, once again reminds me of the benefit of living inBewdley. There are so many examples of local people who give up their time to benefit ourcommunity. They do so freely and out of the love that they have for others. This is exactlywhat Christmas is about - God’s love for us.

So with a magazine full of Christmas spirit and exciting things to see, even if we have typicalDecember weather, the true spirit of Christmas, despite all the commercial media messages,Bewdley will be as full of personal kindness as it always is.So, from everyone on the Bridge team, including those who put it through your door - monthin and out - we wish you a Happy Christmas.

Enjoy the read.

start setting it up, but once we were in wecould look around for the right stuff tocreate a cosy Victorian feel. So now we’vebeen here over a year, and we’ve loved everyminute. It’s really hard work, of course, butwe’ve met people from all over the world aswell as our regular locals. So here’s to manymore scones, pots of tea and home-bakedcakes!Karen and Mark Flello

Work’s fine - but I havea dodgy pastime.Been in Bewdley long enough forgrandchildren to arrive, but there’s alwayssomething to notice and enjoy, even afterall these years. Past example - Royal Hotel’strace fades; Anchor Inn’s double traceemerges.

Christmas approaches. Memories ofsplendid open fires?

I only recently registered the fascinatingnumber and variety of the coal holes (?)opening into cellars, all along Upper Street.

Take a look. Mundane, but all different - in

size, construction, condition. Domestichistory. Justanother, easilyoverlooked, facet ofhow Bewdley issuch a visual delight.

And to motorists, who muttered atsomeone dodging hastily back to thepavement from a crouched camera vantage-point right in the middle of Upper Street, asif photographing a coal hole – “Sorry!”.

Work resumes in the New Year.

Happy Christmas.Al Curmist.

2010 has been a busy year, seeing substantialchanges at the Wyre Forest.

The big building project to create the newCommunity Discovery Centre is finished andhas given us a delightful (and amazinglytranquil!) base for forest exploration andlearning. Since early summer it has beenused extensively for school visits, trainingcourses and open days.

There will be many more events in 2011which will be publicised locally in thesearticles, posters and websites. If you wouldlike to find out when the next open day is, orenquire about hiring the building, please ring01299 266929.

Meanwhile, visitors can get away from peopleand buildings quite quickly by heading offdown one of the three waymarked trails intothe quiet surroundings of the forest.

The Wyre Forest was hailed as “the mosttranquil place in the West Midlands” in early2007 by the Campaign for Rural England, andthis season is the quietest time of all to visitit.

My personal recommendation is to followthe Woodland (Red) Trail to find the rareWhitty Pear and the arboretum. Or take theButtonoak road (B4194) out of Bewdley, parking on the left just out of Buttonoak toexplore Earnwood Copse, where you willhave a better chance of seeing fallow deer. They will have moulted into their thickerwinter coats and there are 4 different colourvarieties in Wyre:

Common – the body is chestnut withwhite or cream spots which disappear inwinter as the coat darkens

Menil – like the common but the spotsare retained in winter and the white rumpis not edged with black

Black – the body is dark chocolate toblack and there is no white rump

White – the body is cream coloured. Thisis the rarest of the colours and a lovelysight to see.

Christmas is coming!

There are carols in the Visitor Centre on19th December from 2.30pm to3.30pm – just a plain and simple celebrationof Christmas. (Last year it snowed!)

On the other hand you may need to escapefrom the worst excesses of Christmas sellingby getting away to the woods for some ofthe aforementioned tranquillity!

There are Health Walks every Tuesday andSunday, meeting at the Visitor Centre at10.30 for a 11am start. The walks are free, led by trained leaders, and are especially forthose who wish to improve their fitness –perhaps after illness. They are very sociableoccasions too and have a large following.

Forest Friends meet at 10am eachThursday in term time for an hour of forestactivities for pre-school children and theircarers. Meet at the Visitor Centre. £2 perchild.

Don’t forget that the forest is open everyday and the Visitor Centre offers hot foodand drinks each day except Christmas Eveand Christmas Day.

There are special deals available to temptyou during the week.

View from the RedthorneFrom my window up here in the Redthorne I can just see the farcorner of the namesake of this publication. It’s only a glimpse butthe bridge is a constant reminder to me of the importance ofBewdley in history and the dilemma of balancing heritage withdaily life.

I can imagine that as it rose, gleaming and hi-tech from the Severnafter its 15th century predecessor was swept away, there would have been many who feltthis was (I wince as I write it) a bridge too far. After all, it was the Georgian equivalent ofNorman Foster’s Millennium Bridge, being of the latest design and a huge leap into themodern age for the largely Tudor town. But then Bewdley was a very important port; busy, wealthy, outward looking. It was the economic epicentre of an extensive hinterland. A townlike that deserved the latest in bridge design by the ultimate bridge designer of his day.

Clearly, the great and good of the town wanted Bewdley to be up to the minute. TheRedthorne itself was one of many properties built as a Georgian fashion statement. Evenmany of the wooden framed Tudor houses were concealed behind Georgian facades, as youcan learn in the museum, itself once a hub for high-speed food production.

My little glimpse of the bridge almost aligns with the site of Telford’s octagonal tollhouse, thevictim of a time when architecture such as Bridge House, the medical centre and library wasa matter of expedience. When I met the architect of the proposed new library, medical andcultural centre, he said that Wyre Forest DC had requested a “high quality modern”replacement, rather than a neo-Georgian one. I asked how he felt about that and he said heagreed, so long as it was understood that “high quality modern” came at a price. One onlyhas to look at what the project will replace to see what happens if you cut corners.

As with Telford’s bridge and Norman Foster’s, the latest design can add to the heritage of atown but only if it is executed with passion and artistry. Bewdley’s heritage is precious butit is a living, breathing place that needs to flex with the times. What we need is not somuch to resist the new as to resist the cheap. Neville Farmer

I remember the year my gran died justbefore Christmas. All the family met and, taking a kite each, climbed Clee Hill in thesnow to fly them in her memory.

For some reason, one present from mychildhood sticks in my memory. It was awhite music box with a pink ballerina on thetop. I played with it all day.

We used to come home from Midnight Masson Christmas Eve and were allowed to openjust one present before we went to bed.

Before we ate our Christmas breakfast wealways went out and gave the horses theirspecial present of carrots.

When I was three I spent Christmas inplaster with a broken leg. I had asked for arocking horse but got a Scalextric which mydad played with all the holiday.

When I was little, I got an umbrella forChristmas and prayed all day for rain.

My childhood was spent in the village next toAlthorp House. The church choir used to gothere on Christmas Eve and the wholeSpencer family sat on the Great Staircasewhile we sang our carols. Then the butlergave us mince pies and coffee.

I spent Christmas 1945 under snow and icein Vienna, just a few months after the end ofWorld War II. I was in the ATS. (now theWRAC) and part of the British Army. Viennawas divided into four zones; American,Russian, French & British, and an interimmilitary government was set up, known asthe Allied Commission for Austria. We livedin a former SS barracks and worked in thepalace of Schőnbrunn, the favourite summerresidence of Maria Theresa. In the forecourtof the palace there is a small theatre, built in1763, which we were able to use and alsooutbuildings which housed a uniquecollection of state carriages. One of these outbuildings was convertedinto a chapel for the use of the forces, and Iremember, with pleasure, singing in the choirat a carol service, that Christmas time.Barbara Crank

Rowing ClubAs I write we have had a lot of rain and the river is currently too highfor safe rowing. Stourport small boats Head race was cancelled due towater levels last weekend, and there is more rain to come. Howevermuch we love our sport, safety comes first. When the water is highthere are two main concerns;- 1) the speed of the stream, which can

make control of the boat harder (if more exciting!?) and although it might be possible torow to Stourport in 10 minutes, it will take a lot more effort to row back again… and 2)the debris in the water. Anyone watching the river in flood will notice the twigs, branchesand even whole trees that float down at speed. Other interesting items to have been spot-ted in the river are a hay bale, a garden shed and a wheelie bin!

"Don't be cross, uncle," said the nephew."What else can I be," returned the uncle,"when I live in such a world of fools as

this?"From 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens

I've always had some sympathy withScrooge. My Christmases involverestless nights on camp beds and sofaswhile others sleep soundly in my bed;laughing off casual insults about my cakebecause "it's the season of goodwill";and travelling miles to visit relatives andthen having to watch the worst thingtelevision has to offer when disaster isimminent for the A & E staff at HolbyCity Hospital on the other side. However…There's plenty of Christmas spirit in thelibrary. We have our Cards for GoodCauses ladies with us, and a selection ofbooks to help with preparations for thebig day – from making table decorationsand roasting turkeys to planning parties. We'll have them out on display thismonth. If it can all get too much foryou, there's always the New Books; youcould take out a completely unrelatedbook to escape into!

Easthams RockhouseChristmas 1946Shortly before Christmas,my father searched thewoods for a Yew boughwhich was decorated withhand-made paper lanterns.Oddments of cotton woolwere pushed between the branches. EarlyChristmas Eve we visited Easthams farm andsang carols by the light of our hurricane lamp. Our landlord Mr. Edward Rheade invited usinside where we spent a pleasant evening withfather reciting funny monologues and mothersinging in her fine soprano voice. My favourite song was the “Mistletoe Bough”written by Thomas Haynes Bayley. I recallsipping punch ladled into glass cups the like I hadnever seen before. Returning home I had hungone of my father’s.... stockings from the bedrailand next morning I found nuts, and orange, apple, a sugar mouse, and a bright shining six-pence. At the foot of my bed were a magicpainting book and a new hair ribbon also akaleidoscope from my grandmother. On thefloor lay a blue case containing a portablegramophone made by His Masters Voice withNipper the terrier dog depicted inside the lidalso a selection of 78 .m. records. My father hadpaid a florin – a silver two shilling piece – andtwo rabbits for it. Melodies spinning from itsturntable gave much pleasure instilling within methe beginning of my interest in melody and lyricswhich I retain today. Our Christmas dinner ofrabbit stew was eaten in silence followed byfather entertaining us with his harmonica. Aftera tea of jelly and blancmange my father left forFranche Village. The voice of the clock mingledwith the crackling of firewood while the oillamps cast a comforting glow.We drank our cocoa andalthough alone we felt secure.Christmas soon passed with1947 making her entry.

Mission to Peru - Episode 2In Arequipa most of our time was spent in thechurch-run San Lucas School. Here we wereinvolved directly with the pupils: in an art project,bible-story telling, football and general play. Wealso spent time in two homes run by the churchfor children who had been abandoned by theirparent(s). One little girl had just arrived havingbeen sold by her mother in a restaurant!

From Arequipa we travelled up into the Andes(14,000ft) to the Colca Canyon area. The missionhere is new and the priest (on his own) is reachingout through healthcare initiatives to the isolatedcommunities in the mountains – involving him inwalking 6 hours each way just to reach a village!

Whilst in this area we were fortunate to watch 12condors soaring on the thermals above thecanyon. From Arequipa we travelled to Lima, and Itell you about this next month.

Practice – life atRiverside Vets asseen by Gavinthe practice catSo, Christmas is onthe way again and I must say I amlooking forward to a little bit ofturkey as a treat. I’m sure one of myhumans will provide some instead ofa few of my biscuits for me. I always make sure they don’t giveme both as I’m quite concernedabout my waistline and I don’t wantto put on extra weight because ofhaving a treat over the festive season.I was talking to my friend Harvey thepointer the other day and he wastelling me that chocolate ispoisonous to dogs.Apparently most dogs don’t realisethis and sometimes they steal thehuman’s chocolates and it makesthem unwell.Personally, I can’t understand whydogs do things like that – I wouldmuch prefer a bit of turkey as long asthere aren’t any bones in it thatcould hurt me. I did hear of a cat once though whogot a tinsel star stuck in the back ofits throat; the vet had to remove itunder anaesthetic. It just goes toshow it’s important to think aboutyour Christmas celebrations andmake sure that your pets are safewhile the humans are enjoyingthemselves. It doesn’t take long andthat way we can all enjoy Christmaswith our humans safely.Wishing you all a very happyChristmas Gavin

FFeesstt iivvee WWiinneessIt’s getting close to that time of the year again.Riding into our lives comes that wonderousevent, Christmas. Now Christmas immediately conjures up thatstaple favourite Mulled Wine. Yet there is alot more to the grape than just the warmingcinnamoned liquid. The Christmas meal isnormally a white meat with occasionaly redmeat as an added attraction.White meat tends to lead us to white wineand there are some amazing whitesavailable.ProseccoThis fine, fruity Italian wine reveals hints ofapples and pineapples. Prosecco is not aclassical wine, but I find it gentler andeasier to drink than most sparkling wine. Riesling This fine German wine originates in Rhein andMosel river valleys. I find this wine to be easyon the palate with gorgeous aromas of fruit.Chardonnay.This classic wine boasts an impressive rangeof flavours of citrus fruits leaving a sumptuoustaste on the palate. Yet you don’t have to serve whites why nottry a superb alternative.

RoseRose wines have become more and morepopular and are not an expensive alternative. They have a flavour all of their own and wortha try at anytime.

Now we come to Reds and I am onlygoing to recommend two.SangioveseThis classic Italian wine grape varietywhose name derives from the Latinsanguis Jovis, "the blood of Jove". Iadore the bitter cherry, plum andmulberry fruits with just a touch ofvanilla oak. Shiraz (Syrah)I am going to recommend somethinggloriously special but, it may shocksome of you.

Sparkling Red.Sparkling Shiraz is, in my opinion, one of thegreat innovations of modern wine making. The taste of this exquisite nectar sends angelsdancing around the tongue.Believe me, this is a magic wine for a magicoccasion. Next month as the New Year approaches I willbring some of the delights of the New Worldwine to the magazine.

WWiinntteerr iinn tthhee GGaarrddeennMost of us will be retiring to the warmth of the house as the really cold weather sets in.However it’s important to remember the useful and decorative work the manyinhabitants of gardens undertake during the year and their struggle to survive in thewinter months.

Fish ponds should be checked daily to ensure the water has not frozen. If it has, place asaucepan of hot water on the surface to melt the ice and maintain an air hole. Don’t

smash the ice or pour boiling water into the pond as this canshock and kill fish.

Hedgehogs hibernate between November and mid to late Marchso you can help by leaving piles of leaves as these are perfectplaces for their nests, also be careful when turning over thecompost heap as this is a natural, warm blanket for frogs, toadsand newts. They are also partial to piles of leaves, abandoned

plant pots and stones.

Garden birds also suffer during the winter months when food and watersources dry up. Leave out food like stale cake, moist breadcrumbs, seeds, sultanas, biscuits, cooked rice and bacon rind for them to eat; you couldeven find a recipe to make your own brand of fat balls for consumption, but like all other creatures they always need fresh water.

Squirrels are always thankful for unsweetened or unsalted nuts overwinter, hazelnuts, walnuts, and almonds are favourites, other additions arechopped apple, carrots, spinach or green beans.

All the nooks and crannies around the garden are havens for a variety ofhibernating insect life. Under the bark of logs, cracks in window and doorframes arelacewings, wasps and ladybirds. Leaf litter and holes in the ground may shelterbumblebees. To help insects in winter, bamboo makes an excellent home for hibernation, tie up the shortened stems into clumps and leave them in the garden in a dry area do thesame with sunflower stems. The welfare of wildlife during winter is a concern but theirpresence in our gardens is a necessity and a pleasure.

Bewdley and District Horticultural Society wish you a Merry Christmas and happy gardening next year.

We did it again. A huge thank you to all youlovely people out there who supported theTraidcraft Christmas Fair. We sold £3,500 ofwonderful Fairtrade goodies on the day, which means people like John, a stoneworker in Kenya who carves the beautifulMadonna and Child from kisii stone, can buyfood for his family and send his children toschool. Estela, a glass cleaner in Boliviainvolved in the production of the recycledglasses range, now has the security ofregular work and a weekly wage. We sold afew more of the delightful animal tapemeasure range. These are made in Vietnamand since we started selling them in 2007Traidcraft has sold over 60,000 – enough togo round the warehouse up in Gateshead300 times! Le Thi Tien, a ceramics worker inVietnam with Craft Link says “Thanks toworking here I have a stable job with astable income. I am happy with the work. Ihave money for my son’s education.” Just afew of the thousands of stories Traidcraftcould tell of lives dignified by regular workand a chance to provide their families withthe important things – food, education, cleanwater, housing and health care.

It’s great fun but quite an undertaking totransform a place of worship into adepartment store and restaurant for the day.How do we do it? A team of helpers arriveson the Thursday to do the heavy lifting, moving the “shop counters” into place and

putting all the heavy boxes of stock intoroughly the right place. The next day a newteam of helpers arrives and sets to workbeavering away to display all the stockattractively and make sure it’s all priced andlabelled. Meanwhile others have beenlabouring in their kitchens producing cakes, soups, quiches, salads etc for therefreshments.

On the Saturday, yet another team ofhelpers arrives to serve the food and drinks, sell the Traidcraft and restock Christmascards and food items. The place hums withshoppers, friends meet for lunch, and the daypasses in a flash. Then at four o’clock aminor miracle occurs. Yet more helpersarrive and everything is cleared away in lessthan two hours, leaving the church ready forworship again. On the following Monday allthe stock has to be got out again andsorted out, but that’s another story.

I love it – it’s so satisfying and heartwarming to see so many people really careabout the plight of folk in the developingworld. It’s marvellous that so many of ourcongregation turn up to help with all thejobs. It’s a great team effort and lots of fun.Thank you to everyone and roll on nextyear!

PS If you missed it we have a stall in St Anne’s,specially extended, with lots of Christmasgoodies, so do come in and take a look and doyour bit to work for a fairer world.

After A-levels, isuniversity the only

worthwhile path to take?At the moment I’m in my final year of A-levels, possibly education altogether, and would like to make clear that goingto university isn’t the ‘be all and end all’for everyone. It appears that the attitudeof some teachers at my school, forexample, is that if you don’t go touniversity you are “writing off thepossibilities of a good future oremployment”. They also appear to bevery interested in figures and statisticsabout how many students apply touniversity - I will be one of the fewstudents in my year that will not be.

With the cap raised on tuition feesrecently, I am even more determined tofind myself a job, with prospects, whichpotentially could give me the funding foruniversity should I decide to go in lateryears rather than saddle myself with ahuge financial debt which I would possiblybe paying off for the rest of my life! TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1ST NOVEMBER 2010

Pot holesThe Mayor and Council welcomed Councillor Mrs Liz Davies to the meeting following herbad fall caused by a pothole in the Load Street Car Park. The Mayor encouraged members ofthe public to report pot holes which they felt were dangerous to the Worcestershire Hubwhich coordinated all such matters. This can be done preferably on-line at www.whub.org.ukor by calling the contact centre on 01905 765765. Anyone reporting a problem should begiven a reference number which can then be followed up if the work is not done reasonablypromptly. Welch GateThe Council had been informed that some further progress was being made by the CountyCouncil as to traffic management options that might help to improve this longstandingproblem which gives rise to high levels of air pollution.Saturday Market – Severnside SouthCouncillors expressed concern at the small number of stalls that were trading at the regularSaturday Market (not to be confused with the Continental Market) and resolved that somediscussion should take place with Bewdley Development Trust who operate the market toput forward suggestions as to how it could be improved Town Council BudgetThe Budget Working Group is in the process of drawing up next year’s budget. As regularreaders will know the Town Council’s budget is not that large when compared with those ofthe County and District Councils. However, it tries to spend your money carefully. Atpresent the “precept” which is the amount levied on an average Band D household is £21.52for the year. If local residents have any suggestions for small scale spending which could helpto improve the town please get in contact (preferably in writing) with one of your TownCouncillors or with the Town Clerk at the Guildhall War Memorials Following on from last month’s note, the War Memorials were indeed cleaned in time for theRemembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday and looked much smarter for these importantevents in the town’s civic calendar. Hopefully they will not require such thorough cleaning fora few more years.

Dear readers,

You may recall from my article in theNovember Bridge that we whilst we haveresources locally in terms of officers andequipment we will be targeting specificissues around Bewdley and surroundingrural parishes that are the cause ofpersistent complaint.

Speed Enforcement

Throughout November we have beenconducting speed enforcement on thoseroads where there is a measured ratherthan a perceived problem of speeding.

We are using a hand-held radar device andchange locations frequently, so offendingmotorists are unlikely to be aware of ourpresence until they are pulled over furtherup the road.

It is disappointing but not surprising thatevery one of those issued with fixedpenalty notices or cautions so far lives inBewdley.

Scrap collectors

Our well publicised initiatives to ensurethat scrap collectors and waste carriersare operating legally have resulted in anoticeable reduction in their activitylocally.

Our focus will now move closer to theWest Midlands where the main scrapdealers are based.

Word has certainly got round that

community, and drivers now almost fallover themselves to show us their licencesand permits when we speak to them.

Unlocked cars

Throughout October and November wehave dealt with a number of suspiciousincidents where someone has attemptedto gain access to unattended vehicles, often successfully.

They are targeting cars on driveways andparked at the roadside, usually during lateevenings. These incidents have beensporadic; however the significant factorcommon to all of them is that in everycase the cars have been left unlocked!

Lock it up

As we approach Christmas and stock upon food, drink and expensive gifts to see usthrough the festive season, the temptationsand opportunities open to thieves increaseexponentially.

Most insurance companies will notcompensate any claim of theft from aninsecure house or vehicle, but will recordit as a risk, so next year your premiums goup! Use some common sense; to quote aphrase –“Lock it or lose it!”

I will close by offering our very bestwishes to you all for a safe, secure andpeaceful Christmas and New Year, fromeveryone at Bewdley Police Station.

The Final Say

From 1st Wribbenhall Rainbows in theirown words

We are the youngest members of the Girl guiding family. Our motto is ‘No-one gets left out’and we’ve tried not to be left out of the Centenary Year! The Launch Party was a perfect fun start to our celebrations with yummy food, games, amagician and a party bag too. Our meetings are only an hour long but we packed them full ofactivities to complete the Adventure 100 Challenge. We compared different aspects of life in1910 with today, looked at water science and performed Goldilocks and the Three Bears ‘inthe spotlight’. We joined in all District events including Fun Swim, St. George’s day Parade,Jamboree on the Trail and Carnival. We were day visitors at the Best100 Camp; Ellie wrote, ‘I liked sitting around the camp fire because wesag (sang) nice sogs’ (songs). Millie: ‘I engudet (enjoyed it). It was scarywean (when) the sucas (circus) man gugled (juggled) with fire’. WithRainbows from the Midlands Region we ‘went wild’ at Twycross Zooand we were on show at Stagestruck! The highlight of the year?Centenary Promise Ceremony in Jubilee Gardens. “I’m going toremember this forever” Thank you, Lord Baden Powell, for all ourmemories and here’s to the next 100 years. Carol-ann Muller-Jones

Promise renewalOn the evening of 20thOctober the church bellswere ringing as approximately 75 members ofBewdley Girl Guiding walked through Bewdley toJubilee Gardens to renew their promises to markthe end of our centenary year. With lanterns andglow sticks lighting us up, we walked the candle litpath into the gardens, where there was a bigscreen counting down to Guiding members allover the UK to renew their promises at 20:10 on

20.10.2010! Gill Robinson, our publicity guru, was presented with her 10 year service badgeand all present received a commemorative promise badge. We left Jubilee Gardens all singingGo well and safely...Our Bewdley celebrations would not have gone so well without the help from people whoaren’t usually involved with Guiding.

The Bridge editors for printing our reports and photographsGary Mayner, always there to photograph our celebrations.St. Anne’s bell ringers for undertaking a quarter peel in our honour. The Police Community Support officers who helped us cross the road safely.Bewdley Floral Art club for their generous donation from the proceeds of their annual fund raising. And Dale Parmenter of DRP Group for providing and working the outdoortechnical equipment for Vision event.
