PhPhPhPhPhyyyyysical Fsical Fsical Fsical Fsical Fitness Can Pitness Can Pitness Can Pitness Can Pitness Can Paaaaay Ofy Ofy Ofy Ofy OffffffBy Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor

At the beginning of 2007 I started on a physicalfitness program. It was nothing designed by ahealth club or physician; it was just a self-madegoal, and a commitment to do whatever it tookto reach that goal. My goal was to lose 30pounds by the end of the year, and then work tokeep the weight off.Today, over a year and a half later, I am happyto report that I not only achieved my original

weight-loss goal, but I have since exceeded it, as well as maintained anexercise and dietary program that has me feeling better than I have felt inmy entire life.So what was it that prodded me to set this type of goal at my age (56, now57)? Well, there were two motivators – one was personal, the otherprofessional. On the personal level, I do not have health insurance so it isvery important for me to take it upon myself to stay as healthy as I possiblycan. On the professional level, I have long felt that playing good pool, especially under extreme pressure, is very stressful and requires extremefocus, both of which can physically wear a player down. This is especiallytrue if they have to play under these conditions for long periods of time. Ithas been no wonder to me why professional players will often commenton how exhausted they are right after they’ve won a big tournament. With this second thought in mind, I have been hoping for the past fewmonths to get the opportunity to test my pool game under a lengthy andstressful situation since my body seemed finally ready for it. I wasn’t sureif that was ever going to happen, however, as my work load and financeshave been keeping me out of the larger tournaments for quite some time. And since I don’t gamble, I didn’t have that as an option, either. Then something wonderful happened. One of Arizona’s more notableyoung players called me out via the forums on a popular billiards website. He never did tell me exactly why he issued his challenge, but it took only a

little rudimentary logic from my grape-sized brain to deduce that someonewas finally fed up with me writing stuff as though I actually know what I amtalking about, and now they wanted to find out whether or not it is true.Well, fine then. I needed to find out the same thing for myself. Thus, a match was set up. The disciplines were to be Straight Pool to 150points, a 10-Ball race to 20 games, and a One Pocket race to 5 games, allon a 9-foot table. The location was to be BullShooters in Phoenix •Arizona’slargest and busiest pool room. The day and time was to be a Saturdayafternoon starting at 3:00PM and going until finished. To top it off, theevent was to be live streamed on the Internet. So now let’s evaluate the situation. Here we had an old guy who hadn’tplayed on a 9-foot table in six years, had not played any serious competitionin months, and had not been practicing at all, going up against a youngguy who is one of the state’s rising stars, and one who had recently beatenArizona’s very best player in a professional tournament; and they were todo this by way of a marathon match in front of a world-wide live audience. No pressure there! Right. So how did the match turn out? Well, my opponent won the 3-hour plusStraight Pool match by a score of 150-72. But then in the 10-Ball match,I came from 6 games behind to win that contest by a score of 20-18. Inthe tie-breaker, my opponent showed his superior One-Pocket skills byputting me away with a score of 3-0 (it had been shortened from a 5-game race due to the time). I t was over nine hours of continuous, intensepool. And one in which my opponent came out with the better overallscore. But I felt like it was I who really won that night. Why? Because late in the10-Ball match – a grueling 4-hour test of wit and grit that, if you remember, came on the heels of a 3-hour Straight Pool match – one of the live-streamcommentators made the statement that I looked like I had more staminathan my opponent. Wow! Now that’s what I consider reaching a goal!I think I just might be ready to enter some tournaments now.

The Arizona BCA State Championship onAugust 7th - 10th, 2008The lure of the 2008 BCA StateChampionship had 27 teams and 125BCA Pool League members rally to theMazatzal Casino nestled in the cool pinesof Payson, AZ. With six titles at stake, and $14,550, the Open Men’s and Ladiescombatants were the first to battle thetight, Pro cut 4-1/2" pockets on thesixteen, 7 foot Diamond Smart Tables.Draped in Simonis 860 Tournament Bluecloth, and dotted with Red Circle cueballs and Super Aramith Pro balls, thecompetitors enjoyed the best equipmentknown to amateur tournament play today. The new BCAPL tournament lights, complete with built in scoring beadsapprized the competitors of theirprogress. With the newly compiled BCA Pool League (BCAPL) Rule book as

reference, theplayers wereready toattack theracksThe Men’sOpen drew60 playerswith JerryS t u c k a r t ,even tua l l y,facing offa g a i n s tRobert Barryfor the hot-seat.Stuckart thensent Barry to

the one loss side where Bob Soto waited. Soto had lost his second matchbut bounced back with eight in a row including big wins over Tony Flores,Joe Perez and Brandon Butler. Barry sent Soto to the stands in third place. Now, against Stuckart in the finals, Barry took an early lead and it lookedlike a second set was imminent. Stuckart, relentless, fought back to tie thescore at hill-hill then claim the last rack and the Arizona State BCA Men’stitle at 5-4.The Ladies Open event had 30 players contending tor the title. The winner’sside came down to Stevie Caylor from Prescott and Noel Rima fromPhoenix. Caylor, a relative unknown to the Phoenix players, came with a

full cheering section and a game to backit up. Caylor ousted Rima and took herplace in the hot-seat. Rima, against loserbracket finalist Lourdes Lomeli. Acombination of strong play from Lomeliand Rima running out of gas led to aLomeli win. Lomeli had lost early in theevent to Caylor, and was hoping to avengein the finals. The match was close, butthe scrappy Caylor came out on top againto earn the title of Arizona State BCALadies Champion. The Men’s Masters Division saw reigningchampion Dennis Orender make his waythrough the field to earn the hot-seat witha win over Terry Tucker. Tucker led early, but Orender quickly overcame the deficitand cruised to victory. After Tuckereliminated teammate Pete Lhotka on the

one loss side, he met Orender in the finals. This time, Orender took theearly lead and Tucker made a valiant effort to mount a comeback, but to noavail. Dennis Orender affirmed his second straight Arizona BCA StateMasters title. The Ladies Masters Division was a round-robin event with Susan Williamsand Bernie Store emerging as the two top players. Store scored adominating 5-1 win over Williams in their round robin match, but it wasWilliams’ 7-2 win over Store in the finals that earned the title. The ArizonaState Ladies Masters Title will fit nicely next to Williams’ BCA National Scotch

Doubles title from earlier this year. With all of the singles events completed, the team events got underway. The Ladies Teams event came down to a showdown between The “A”Team from Alexander’s in Phoenix and Kitty’s Bad Cats from Kitty’s inPhoenix. The Bad Cats are the reigning BCA Open Ladies Champions, but the “A” Team was chock full of top masters talent. Both teams made itto the hot-seat with the “A” Team coming back from an early disadvantageto win. The Bad Cats sent the Snap team apackin’ in third place and earnedanother shot at the “A” Team for the title. The Bad Cats gave it all they hadbut it just wasn’t enough and the “A” Team took the State Championship.

Big Jeff Handles the FieldNORTHGLENN, CO - August 16, 2008Cue Club regular Jeff Crawford made a nice undefeated run through thebracket of 23 players to claim the top prize at the Big Box Summer Series

8-Ball event. "BigJeff" as we like tocall him played wellto dispatch MikeHellmer, JohnnyVasquez, BillSkinner and JohnSanifer to the oneloss side.Over on the oneloss side the manon the move wasKiko. He won 5matches in a row

before running into Colorado Springs representative Nick Smith. Nick wasin the middle of his own little run also winning 5 in a row, including a revengematch over John Sanifer, to take a crack at Big Jeff in the finals. The finalsmatch would end in one set, however, and Nick would have to settle forsecond place. The monsoon-like conditions in the Denver area this day probably didn'thelp the turnout for this event but the Cue Club and the players managedto generate a respectable $1,380 pot nevertheless. Thanks to all the playersthat sailed out here!1st Jeff Crawford $600 + 230 pts2nd Nick Smith $350 + 115 pts3rd John Sanifer $200 + 77 pts4th Kiko $110 + 58 pts5/6 Bill Skinner $60 + 46 pts

NORTHGLENN, CO - August 23, 2008The Colorado Cue Club and Players Choice Leagues were happy towelcome 36 players for the 2nd "PCL Fall Kickoff" event: the $500 AddedFall Kickoff 9-Ball Open. Mike "Hammer" Hellmer, owner of Match Up's inFort Collins, made his presence known by rolling through the winner's

bracket to take on Chris McDaniel. The hot seat match seemed to be allHellmer at 6-3 in the race to 7, but McDaniel made it interesting by forcinga hill-hill game. Hammer would close the deal, however, and wait for anopponent in the finals. The battle for third was waged by a couple Big BoxSummer Series champions in Bill Skinner (One Pocket) and Jeff Crawford(8-Ball). This match was all Skinner and he earned a rematch with McDanielwho had defeated him earlier getting a majority of the good fortune. Therolls seemed to be on Chris' side once again as he cruised to a 7-3 winand a birth in the finals. But they wouldn't last against the "Bulldog" Mike"the Hurricane/Hammer" Hellmer who snapped three 9-Ball breaks (all indifferent pockets) to win hill-hill again! Congrats to the Hammer. The Fall Kickoff main event, $1000 Added Barbox 8-Ball, is September 13at the Cue Club. by Michelle BarkdollOn Thursday, July 24th Johnny Archer (TheScorpion) and Earl (The Pearl) Stricklandconducted two pool schools, for those thatregistered for this rare opportunity, and thenperformed a 3 hour exhibition later thatevening at Malarkey’s Pool & Brew inTacoma, WA. The pool schools andexhibition were specially organized for theAmerican Poolplayers Associationmembers. With over a hundred spectators, EarlStrickland performed his awesome trick shotexhibition. Then throughout the course of thenight eight people would be drawn from raffletickets to play a game of scotch doubleswith Johnny and Earl. The first two namesdrawn were Dave Wingate (paired withJohnny) and Nina Arnold (paired with Earl).‘Team Strickland’ won that match … woohoo Nina! The second two names were DanWingate (w/ Earl) and Jo Woodward (w/ Johnny). This time ‘Team Archer’was victorious.Next Dan Louie played Johnny Archer a Race to 5. The match started off 1

to 2 in Johnny’s favor but Dan caroms thecue ball off the 2 to pocket a difficult 9 thustying the match 2-2. Louie breaks and runsthe next game giving him the lead. ThenArcher wins the following game. With thescore 4-3, Dan gets a shot and runs the tableto win the set. It was nice having our ownarea world class player show his talent onthe pool table … way to go Dan!Back to drawing the third set of names toplay scotch doubles; Jim Ackers (w/ Archer)and Joe Mack (w/ Strickland) were the luckywinners. ‘Team Strickland’ pulled it out. Thelast two names to be drawn for a scotchmatch were Paul Alexander (w/ Strickland)and Drew McMahon (w/ Archer). Again, ‘TeamStrickland’ won.For the close of the evening, Johnny and Earlspent over an hour autographing whateverwas given to them to sign (and there were

some doozies) and taking pictures with everyone. (Malarkey’s seemed tohave a few missing cue balls after the autographing segment … hummm?)All in all, it was a great treat to have these players visit our area where thepros do not normally stop. We hope to have another event such as thisagain. Thanks to Mark Cantrill for scheduling arrangements, also Johnnyand Earl for exhibiting their legendary talent and spending time for autographsand pictures.

Mitch Ellerman

The 5th stop of the Desert Classic Tour was played this past weekend atBullshooters in Phoenix, AZ. The original location was moved and recentlyopened Bullshooters did an outstanding job ofhosting the tour event. It is located at 35th Ave& Peoria in Phoenix, the old Six Shooters. AndWOW have they done a fantastic job convertingthis place into the nicest and largest billiards hallin the area.43 players showed up to compete for the BigTable 9 - Ball tournament. Chuck Evans andMitch Ellerman played their way to the Hot-Seatwhile other top players from around the statewere all vying for spots in the money. At the endof Saturday’s play 12 players were set to returnon Sunday, all of which were guaranteed in themoney.A great thing about the Desert Classic Tour, isthat they cater to the lower ranked players byoffering an 8 & Under Side pot for the highestfinishing player rating an Arizona 8 and lower. Inthis tourney two players tied to split the side pot. Carlos Avalos and Judeboth played some tough matches to earn a share of the side pot.George Teyechea found himself in a tough battle with Gus Briseno with theloser taking 5th/6th. The two went back in forth, tied at 4, tied at 5 andagain at 6 - 6, but Gus strung together a few racks late to get on the hillfirst. Congrat’s to George for his strong finish after his 9 - 7 defeat. Gusawaited his challenger in the next round and it turned out to be one of theorganizers of the event Dennis Orender. Dennis and Gus played a nailbiter and ended up hill-hill. On the case game they traded safes and positionplay back in forth. Dennis was left with a really tough shot on the 6 ball. Hebared down and fired on it but it just didn’t find a pocket, leaving Gus a 4ball out for the win. Congrat’s to Dennis for another strong finish in theDesert Classic Tour. For the Hot Seat we find the tale of two styles as young gun Mitch Ellerman

matched up with old school Chuck Evans. Mitch’s style is fast and powerfulwhere Chuck is more slow and calculated. Mitch rattled off the first few

racks while Chuck “The Mailman” Evans pickedaway at a few games of his own. After a shortmatch, Mitch was able to pull away to continuehis undefeated tournament and sit upon the hotseat thrown.Awaiting Chuck on the 1 lose side was GusBriseno. The two played a very exciting matchback in forth for the chance to upset the kid. Theytraded leads throughout the match but in the endChuck was able to edge Gus out. Congrat’s toGus with his 3rd place finish. The finals, as is with all Desert Classic Tourevents is a One Set Race to 13 games. Chuck“The Mailman” Evans verses Mitch “TheWonderboy” Ellerman. Chuck wins the coin tossand breaks the first rack “Dry”. Mitch showedthat he was definitely here to win as he ran offthe first two racks to take an early lead. Chuck

got his first game at 3 - 1, before Mitch got down to business. He used hisfast style and superior ball making skills to run off the next 8 games beforeChuck could get on the board again to make it 11 - 2. At 12 - 3 Mitchmissed his first ball on the match. Leaving an incredible hill to climb forThe Mailman. Chuck did not seem rattled at all at this point as he workedhis way through a few racks, played a few safety games and got the gameback to 12 - 7. In game 20 though, Chuck worked his way through the rackonly to just get on the wrong side of the 7 ball in the side pocket.Without much angle at all, he drilled the ball into the side and tried to movewhitey around the table 3 rails. The tables that were just re-done in previousweeks didn’t allow the ball to make it all the way to the bottom rail for the 8.Chuck quickly decided between banking it back or trying the extreme cut inthe corner. He elected the cut shot and came up short. He tapped the cueball to concede the victory to Mitch Ellerman. With that win Mitch will bethe new leader in the Desert Classic Tour’s Overall Leaderboard. At the end of the season the top 8 players in the standings will be seededin the final tournament. With over $6000 of added money already in thepot, the finals will definitely be the event to attend. Because of Alexander’sclosing it’s doors earlier this year the final location is still up in the air. Staytuned to AZPoolScene.com and www.desertclassictour.com for updates.I want to thank Bullshooters for hosting what I can only imagine is the firstof many great events. The upgrades throughout the building were great toenjoy and the staff very helpful and polite. If you haven’t had the change tostop in yet, I highly recommend doing so. Bill Mildenberger died yesterday in Portland from complications of the heart. He had been in intensive care for about a week. He was a long time ownerof the Nite Hawk in Portland and he was a leader in making the northwesta great place for pool. Bill was the first President of Western BCA andwithout his early leadership the Western BCA would not be where it istoday. He was instrumental in getting Chinook Winds as a site for ourChampionships and he always gave more money and time to the sport ofpool than anyone realized. Bill had been the President of the PACS sincethe split between ACS and BCAPL in 2004. The pool community has lost achampion of the sport. --- Bill Henderson, President Western BCA

Bill MildenberBill MildenberBill MildenberBill MildenberBill Mildenbergggggererererer

What I always admired about Bill was you always knew whether he likedyou or didn’t like you. He didn’t pull any punches in dealing with people, and most knew where they stood with him. Diplomacy was not Bill’s strongsuit, as he was honest in speaking his mind, regardless of the forum hewas addressing. He displayed a hard exterior, but those closest to himknew he could have a soft heart. Wily, cantankerous, generous and toughrolled up into a package that endeared him to those who had the time toreally know him. He displayed strong leadership skills, but he possessedthe wisdom to hear opinions from those he respected before rendering adecision. Bill was always at the forefront of supporting northwest pool withhis great events at the Nitehawk and the founding of the Western BCA;and he carried on his leadership role with the Pacific ACS and as a directoron the national ACS Board. Perhaps Bill had a foreboding of his demise,as over the last year he handed over his leadership baton to those officersand directors who could carry on his tradition of building his associationsstronger for the future. His legacy will continue. From the national American CueSports Alliance (ACS), its player membersand directors, we are truly saddened to lose a great sportsman and agreat friend. He will be greatly missed, and we will rededicate ourselves tocarrying on his love for the sport. – John Lewis, Executive Director - ACS

We at The Break were shocked and saddened to hear of Bill’s passing. While on deliveries, I always looked forward to stopping at the NiteHawkand talking to Bill. He always found the time to sit and talk. He was alwaysinterested in what pool news I had heard in my travels.I had the priviledge to work with Bill when he was president of the WesternBCA and of the Pacific ACS and admired his dedication to the sport. Heworked tirelessly to bring pool to the players of the Northwest. He will bemissed by all who knew him and the sport of pool has lost a great advocate. It is with an great sense of loss that we wish you goodbye. -- Don “Cheese”Akerlow, The Break

Bob JewettSamm Diep

By Samm Diep (c) August 2008It’s that time of the year again! As the leaves turn, the kids go back toschool and the fall pool league season begins. Do you have any plans fora better league season this year? Can you improve from lastyear? Now would be a good time to set some tangible, measurable goals. Maybe we want to move up by onehandicap. Maybe we want a higher win percentage. Thegreat thing with league is that someone else is keepingstats for you.Your kids come home with progress reports thatshow their development and indicate their areas forimprovement. Granted, the league stats won’tidentify the shots you miss most often or how manytimes you play a safety, but most will show ERO’s(Earned Run-Outs) and win-loss percentages. Nowremember, our goals must be performance based, not outcome based. Ifwe put in the time, the results will follow. If you play five people in one nightthat all run the table on you, that was not a result of your performance.Let’s start with something simple!Choose a new drill each week to focus on. This should be something thatallows you to target a weakness in your game. Perhaps you dislike rail cutshots or have a phobia of draw shots. If you can’t identify your weakness, just ask one of your teammates. Obviously, if one week is not enoughtime, keep working on it. Don’t move on to another one until you’ve got it. Ifyou’re having trouble with it, ask for help. That’s the only way to improve. Here’s one that I enjoy. It requires minimal set up and is a great warm-upbefore leagues or tournaments:In a perfect rack, the center ball doesn’t move. It’s very common to find the8 or 9 ball still in the rack area after the break. In this exercise, set up the 8 ball or 9 ball one ball behind the spot (basically, the same place it gets racked). Shoot the shot with ball in hand in thekitchen. If you find that’s too difficult, move the cue ball closer. Make sureyou’re using a very level cue and very little side-spin. Use a deliberate, smooth stroke and try to get the cue ball back to the kitchen area, or close.Re-spot the ball (or another one) and shoot it again from where the cueball stopped. You’d be surprised how many times the money ball stays put after thebreak. The next time you face this game-winning shot you’ll already have itin your arsenal.Pick up a book, watch a video, surf the internet, or simply read through therest of this publication. There are so many great resources out there tohelp you get started. Many of them won’t even cost you a dime!PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT POOLTIPJAR.COM “RANDOM SMATTERINGS OF POOL THOUGHTS & ARTICLES”.You can take polls, view article archives, and read tournament and training updates.SAMM DIEP, “CHERRY BOMB” HOUSE PRO AT MILE NINE & RACK ‘EM BILLIARDS (AURORA, CO) AUTHOROF “YOU MIGHT BE A D PLAYER IF... One of the most common mistakes I see beginningand intermediate players make when they areplaying position is to complicate the shot. Oftenthey will try to use lots of power and/or spin when asimple rolling cue ball would suffice.

The natural state of the cue ball is to be rolling smoothly on the cloth. Thisis nicely demonstrated by using a striped ball as the cue ball and shootingit the length of the table with draw. If you shoot at gentle speed, within afew diamonds of travel you will see the backspin disappear and turn first

into sliding and theninto smooth rolling. One big advantage ofthe rolling cue ball isthat it is easy to predictwhere the cue ball willgo. As long as youpocket the ball and getthe speed right, thecue ball’s ending spotis very repeatable. In comparison, withdraw shots the finalcue ball locationdepends on both howmuch draw and speedyou started with, howfar away the object ballis, and how sticky thecloth is. Lots of thingshave to be right or atleast taken intoaccount for a drawshot to turn out well. The same is often trueof side spin shots withthe addedcomplications ofsquirt, swerve andthrow. Sometimessuch shots arenecessary for theposition you need to

play, but they should not be your first choice. Here is a drill to help you perfect your rolling shots. The goal

on each shot is to pocket an object ball with a rolling cue ball and justbarely pocket a second ball with the cue ball. The object balls go on theX’s in the diagram and the nine ball goes in the jaws of the pocket. The cueball is where ever you want on each shot, so you will have to select theangle that makes the shot possible and/or easy. To make sure the cue ballis rolling when it hits the object ball, start back a couple of diamonds andshoot at least a tip above center on the cue ball.Only put one ball up at a time or the extra balls will interfere with the shot. The object ball always goes into pocket A. For some of the positions shown,it may be impossible to both pocket the object ball and just roll to the nine.See if you can work out the areas on the tables where the requirements

M8 Pool Leagues has grown to become the largest Independent PoolLeague in the world with over 600 Teams and 5000 members in theMinneapolis/St. Paul MN area alone. This is mainly attributed to the utilizationof the best handicapping system available to pool leagues. And now it isavailable to any pool league - anywhere! There isn’t any “Set up Fees” or“Franchise Fees”; you just need tohave the desire to improve the statusof pool leagues in your area. The M8handicapping system gives EVERYpool player that steps up to the tablethe best opportunity of winning thatmatch. Nearly 3 out of every 4 setsplayed in M8 has gone hill/hill -meaning both players have anopportunity to win the match bywinning that game. Combine thatwith the fact that M8 pays back moreof the players money than mostleague systems - with team prizes of $10,000.00 at 3 different levels andno requirements to travel to Las Vegas to get your prize - you get paid righton site at our Annual Tournament. We have both “Match Play” - where it’sone on one play a race to ratings, and we have “Round Robin Play” whereall five players on each team play all five players on the other team onegame each. Both of these formats of play are handicapped with the “FairPlay” system and it absolutely has made the game of pool much moreexciting for the league players. Any Vendors, League Operators, Pool RoomOwners, and Bar Owners - if you are interested in an inexpensive way ofrejuvenating your pool related business, give us a call at 651-636-2022 orvisit us at www.M8Pool.com for more details.

On August 16th and 17th, The Parlor in Bellevue, WA was host to the

NWPA’s 5th tour stop. It was also a WPBA Qualifier for a paid entry to theirupcoming stop in Lincoln City, OR. As this is a difficult event to get an inviteand the closeness in proximity to us, it was circled on the calendar by allthe top local players. But it also drew attention across North America.Players came from California, Minnesota, British Columbia and Florida. Once again, The Parlor shone through with its amazing décor, service, and playing conditions. And with the advent of all day happy hour prices forfood and drinks on Sunday, it has gotten even better. The players from outof town all commented on this being the nicest pool room in which theyhad ever played. It was one of these players, however, that stood out from the others. FROM CHRISTINA & STAR PIONA“The 2nd Annual Dave Piona 8 Ball Open was a reminder of so manyof the good things that pool has to offer.I was reminded how Cony and Tina Mendoza stepped up almostimmediately after I lost Dave last year and offered to host a memorialtournament in his honor. They worked hard and without any financialgain for themselves; Parker, owner of Vinnie’s Bar and Grill provided thefacility and tables, offered up a BBQ lunch for the players; and the playersthemselves came and helped us with their support, encouragement andmore importantly true caring. Everyone put their literal and figurative armsaround us and showered us with love. This year’s tournament had a different, yet familiar feel. This year, I wasexcited to see the players and hoped that there would be a good turnout. This year, I assisted Cony and Tina in getting the word out about thetournament. This year, I was still encouraged and supported by the playersand spectators. But it this year was also my turn to reach out and let theplayers know just how important they were to Dave and his family. Somany comrades of the green felt; so many road stories; so many yearsand so much history – itwas such a specialfeeling.A mere thank you doesn’tseem to be enough toexpress the gratitudethat we feel for everyonewho has stepped up tohelp us in so many, manyways. PORTLAND, ORTwenty-three players was a record for the 1st Sunday of the month tournament atSam’s Billiards. Who would have expected it to happen in August on a beautifulday? Perhaps the Johnny Archer - Earl Strickland exhibition 11 days earlier inspireda few more people than usual to join the straight pool tournament.

Bob Zack took the top honors as he generally does when heplays. He had to beat some very good players to get there, including Michael Jensen, John Fleming and Mike Deitchman.Other players making the finals, but not ending up in themoney included Tracy Fannin, Michael Justice, Darin Walding

and John Lewis. There were many fine players who wereeliminated in the first round.

The player to come from the furthest distance wasWalter Nead, a very good player who came fromMontana to visit Jason at Sam’s.Many thanks for making this a record-settingtournament. The final results of the August 3tournament were as follows:

BILLIARD TOURNAMENTS

BROOMFIELD, Colo. - Forecasting an $800,000 operating loss this year on itsbalance sheet after a disappointing Expo in June, the Billiard Congress of Americais planning to tighten its belt several notches in its next fiscal year and cut supportfor some high-profile events and organizations.Among the casualties will be the BCA’s annual professional 9-ball tournament, produced this year as the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships. The BCAalso has elected not to stage an induction ceremony for new members of the BCAHall of Fame elected in 2009.Those high-profile annual events were just two of the programs slashed from the2008-2009 budget when the BCA Board of Directors met in Lake Forest, Ill., in earlyAugust. With the billiard industry still mired in a horrendous economic slump andthe BCA coming off its smallest trade show in 15 years, the board of directors votedto eliminate events and affiliated association support for at least one year.“The board voted to suspend funding to all sources and organizations until we canbetter analyze the extent of this economic downturn,” said BCA President SeanCummings of Brunswick Billiards in an embargoed interview last week. “We can’tcontinue deficit spending, and we determined that the best way to handle budgetcuts was with a uniform approach.”Cummings left open the possibility that an outside organization could take the reinsof the 9-ball event or Hall of Fame ceremony. “The question is at what level of qualitythey would be staged,” he said. “If somebody wants to do it right, we would certainlyentertain it.”The BCA, which derives virtually all of its revenue from its annual International Billiard& Home Recreation Expo and through membership dues, is projecting an $800,000net operating loss for its 2007-08 fiscal year, which ends on Sept. 30. Theassociation’s annual pro 9-ball tournament, which the BCA produces for telecast onESPN, loses more than $100,000 per year, while the annual Hall of Fame ceremoniestypically run at a $50,000 deficit. While the final numbers from the 2008 Expo had not been tallied as of last week,Cummings said that the Charlotte, N.C.-based show would make at least a $60,000profit or slightly more. For perspective, the 2006 BCA Expo in Houston generated a$1.1 million profit for the association. The disappointing result and changed expectations prompted the BCA board tobudget very conservatively for 2008-2009.“We had to make tough choices,” Cummings said. “We cut discretionary spending, spending on the home office, contracted services ...”The BCA contracts its member services, accounting, technology, associationmanagement and some public relations/marketing with Meeting Expectations inAtlanta. The association manages the expo, marketing and some graphic designthrough its office in Broomfield, Colo. Cuts in those areas are likely to be confinedto employee time allocation. In addition to the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships and the Hall of Fameinductions, the BCA will suspend its financial support of pool-related organizationssuch as the National Wheelchair Poolplayers Association and Association of CollegeUnions-International (ACU-I). According to Cummings, the BCA will continue as theNorth American member confederation to the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA),but will not supply funds for American players to travel to WPA events.According to Johnson, the budget cuts will save the BCA approximately $300,000in the coming budget year. Johnson insisted that education and research will continueto be funded. In further efforts to reel in spending, the BCA will reduce its commitment at the

August JamboreeNational Championship Series Announced by CueSports International, LLCCueSports International, LLC (CSI), the parent company of the BCA PoolLeague (www.playbca.com), the United States Bar Table Championships(USBTC) and the Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament, would like toannounce the National Championship Series (NCS). The NCS will be aseries of five national events in the following cue sport disciplines: 8-Ball,9-Ball, 10-Ball, 14.1Continuous and One Pocket. The first NCS event will be the 8-Ball Division. For players to participate inthe 8-Ball Division they must be either a U.S. resident or possess a U.S.passport. The winner will receive all paid expenses to the prestigious WorldPool-Billiard Association (WPA) 2009 World 8-Ball Championship. Lastyear’s world event was held in Fujairah, UAE. The 2009 event is anticipatedto be held in mid-April.The following information applies to all five NCS events. Qualifiertournaments will be held at billiard rooms throughout the United States. AllNCS events will be open to men and women - both amateurs andprofessionals. Players are not required to be a member of any nationalleague or association. In the initial years of the NCS, everyone must qualify- there will not be any invited players.Mark Griffin, CEO of CSI expressed the need for a more formalized nationalchampionship system, “The U.S. is one of the few countries that does notconduct national championships. CSI saw the possibility of creatingopportunities for pool players while offering national exposure for the billiardsindustry. This structure will determine for the first time a true nationalchampion in all five disciplines.”More information will be released in the next few weeks. Room ownerswith any questions, interest in hosting a qualifier in your state or region, orin hosting the national event, please contact Holly Ryan [email protected] or at 702-719-7665.CueSports International, LLC, goal is to create and improve opportunitiesfor pool players of all abilities through fair governance and equitable policies.

This left the Open Teams eventundecided. All players in attendanceagreed that the early favorite was Copand Robbers. The team wascrammed with talent includingreigning Masters Champion DennisOrender and National Barbox 8-BallChampion Mitch Ellerman. All thattalent was not enough as the LandSharks from Crazy Earls, in the thirdround, put them in the loser’s bracket. The Sharks pummelled two morestrong teams, X Factor from Phoenixand then the White Rhinos fromPrescott, to sit atop in the hot-seat.Who else to confront them in the finals

— none other than Cop andRobbers? The first set was a closeone, but a victorious Cop andRobbers and forced a second set.The Land Sharks quickly found thatallowing their opponents to see thefinish line was bad strategy. Cop andRobbers crushed the team fromCrazy Earls in the final set to becomeArizona State BCA Champions.2008 AZ BCA State Championshipwas another successful event withfive of the six events being won byteams from Alexander’s in Phoenix.A true testament to the level of talentthere was also a statement to whatplayers lost when Alexander’s, unfortunately, closed their doors earlier thisyear. This year’s players unanimously agreed that the new location of MazatzalCasino was outstanding and wish to thank the entire staff for their careand dedication to service.Ladies Open Division1st $725 Stevie Caylor2nd $525 Lourdes Lomelo3rd $350 Noel Rima4th $200 Sonia Florez5th $100 Natalie Hostler, Claudia Justus7th $75 Linda McBride-Adams, Char AlcottLadies Masters1st $500 Susan Williams2nd $250 Bernie StoreMen’s Masters1st $550 Dennis Orender2nd $300 Terry TuckerMen’s Open Division1st $1300 Jerry Stuckart2nd $900 Robert Barry3rd $600 Bob Soto4th $350 Brandon Butler5th $200 Ed Parker, Joe Perez7th $125 Doc Rice, Todd Ludwigg9th $75 Andy Davis, David Sloan, Travis Kennedy, Tony Florez13th $50 Echo Ledger, Bill Vander Weyst, Al Barlow, Gary WheelerMens Teams1st $1800 Cop and Robbers2nd $1200 Crazy Earls 23rd $900 White Rhinos4th $550 X FactorLadies Teams1st $1100 “A” Team2nd $650 Kittys Bad CatsThe BCAPL would like to thank Mike Howerton for his contribution to this editorial.

are impossible. For example, if a ball is at point Y, you can’t make it in Aand simply roll the cue ball into the nine without coming off the side cushion. The point is to learn both what is possible and what is impossible. An extension of the drill that is more general is to see for each object balllocation where can you leave the cue ball exactly by the cushion with arolling cue ball and no bounces off cushions. For example, you could chosepoint Y for the object ball and see which diamonds — A, B, C, D, E, F —you can leave the cue ball near while pocketing the object ball in pocket A.I think I can reach all of them except maybe F. Remember, it’s no fair to usedraw, since a combination of angle and draw (or follow) should allow youto get to any spot on the table. This is a rolling cue ball drill.

Shorty

My Vegas 2008 APA Wheelchair Challenge StoryAs some of you know, I recently had the pleasure of traveling to Las Vegas,Nevada to play in the 2008 APA 8 ball Wheelchair Challenge. I have beenshooting league pool now with the APAsince 2005, but had never played in thistourney. In 2007, I shot in three NWPA,National Wheelchair PoolplayingAssociation, events in which I finishedthe year 13th in points. They play about8-10 tournaments a year on average. For this particular APA event, I really didnot know what to expect. I went into theevent as an SL4 (read skill level 4), buthaving recently gone up to an SL5, Iexplained it to the tournament officialsbeforehand. They simply said that Iwould be continue to play as an SL4 andwould be adjusted accordingly.First round, I played a guy named JoelGoodman from Oregon. Nice guy, SL4,and he had a decent game. For somereason, I was very timid andnervous...not my usual self for sure. I lost hill/hill.Luckily the format was modified single elimination...meaning you could loseone of your first two matches and still be in it, but not both.My second round, I got a bye.My third round saw me playing a guy named Rob Thompson from Decatur,Illinois, also an SL4, who turns out finished third last year in this event. Ididn't know this until after our match. I won hill/hill, but I also gave him agame by scratching on the 8 ball in the side pocket. This match I playedMUCH better than my first...actually having a couple of nice outs. I basicallybeat this guy by running a few balls and getting in his head, sort of myusual game.My fourth round was a gift...plain and simple. I played Rene Martinez fromGarland, Texas, an SL4 and he had me crushed 2-1 going into the fourthgame. He breaks, scratches, and makes the 8 ball. Now we have hill/hillagain. Again I am shooting very timid...not very fluid or adventurous forsome reason. He makes an incredible bank shot and breaks out a ball ofhis I thought I had tied up. He then makes the ball, but hooks himself badlyon the 8, only being able to see a sliver of it. He goes for the hit, misses the8 ball entirely, and scratches in the side...giving me the match. I felt reallybad for this guy, but a win is a win. That concluded day 1, and I for one felt blessed to even still be alive aftermy poor shooting. It was not that I played so badly, it was just I had such acase of the jitters. I guess it had been too long since I had really played in atournament of this caliber.Day two would be a different story...I started my day playing the defending champion, and it seemed everyoneenjoyed pointing out to me that he was the defending champion. For somereason, I didn't mind it at all. His name was Jamie Havard, another SL4,and he was from Lucedale, Mississippi of all places. Heck I been deerhunting in his neck of the woods I am sure. He played strong, but I playedSTRONGER. I ended up beating him 3-0. That's when I realized that I had

a real shot of making it to the finals. My next opponent was Latai Loa, SL4, from Hilo, Hawaii. This gentleman

turned out to be one of the nicest people Ihad the pleasure of playing this wholetournament. He shot every shot with abridge from his electric wheelchair. Hewas just super nice, always a smile andvery curteous. I hate to say this, but Icrushed him 3-0 in about 7 or 8 innings. Iplayed probably my best match of thetournament against him. This brought me to the semi-finalsupstairs at the Riviera. I had to send mybuddy back to our hotel room for a collaredshirt since I didn't even bring one. LuckilyPredator cues gave me one the day beforefor buying a Poison jump/break cue.The semi's would find me playing MichaelLittle, an SL3, from Springfield, Virginia.Unfortunately, because of my strongplaying, they moved me up to an SL5 right

before the match...meaning I had to win 4 games to his 2. I won the firstgame, but he won the second game. With my back to the wall so to speak,I won the next two...including a rather difficult backwards cut on the 8 ballto push it to hill/hill. The final game, well, I missed 1 shot. It was an easy 11ball near the rail, but my mind said to run the cue ball two rails to get shapeon the 8. Looking back, I should of hit it with bottom left and drew the cueball to center table. I just felt confident going forward instead of drawing thecue ball. I missed and he ran two balls and the 8 for the win.I settled for third place, a nice plaque, and $500.Here are the full results:http://www.poolplayers.com/ntc/2008n...LCHAIR0001.HTMAlong with a brief write up of the finals with pictures...and no they didn'ttake any of me HA HAhttp://www.poolplayers.com/ntc/2008ntc/wheelchair.htmlI guess there is always next year, Chad, aka KidShark, aka ShortyShorty posted his story on Pool Pages, The Billiard Nation.
