March 21st, 2015 Diamond Billiards in Modesto, CA hosted our semi annual $500 added bar table 8 ball tournament, We had 45 players competing for their share of $2300 in prize money. It was a full day of 8 ball (and BBQ burgers) starting at noon with the double elimination format. Jason Williams and Tinsley Johnson fought through their brackets to meet in the "hot seat" match on the winners side. Jason played well and remained undefeated even when Tinsley came back from the one loss side for the final match Jason was ready and proved to everyone why he is a force to be reckoned with on the table. We would like to thank all the tournament participants and our loyal customers for their help and support in making this a successful event time after time. Special thanks to Mike Mitchell for running a smooth event and Tim Costa for some great BBQ burgers. See you all again in September.

Scott Frost wins the 2015 Andy Mercer Memorial at Rum Runner Las Vegas. Sunday dawned with 4 matches on the winners side with Sean Lane-Jason Klatt, Jeff Schilder-Sal Butera, Mike Massey-Scott Frost, and Joven Bustamante-Dick Rice. After the smoke cleared from the semi finals Frost and Bustamante were in line for the hot seat with Frost putting Bustamante on the left side. He had a match with Jason Klatt but got back into the championship match. The tournament had plenty of come backs in matches, as being down 4-2 or 5-1 in a race to six did not phase to many players in this years action. Plenty of drama was added to the event when Van Boening, the winner in five of last six and four in a row was left in tie for 5th-6th. Mike Massey was victorious to put SVB in the left side and he was eliminated by Bustamante three matches later. Bustamante also defeated Hall Of Famer Mike Massey in his next match. Scott Frost was in stroke as he played real steady thru out the weekend. This year the field was strong to the point we had two Hall of Famers in Massey and Jimmy Mataya along with a future one in Shane. Yet as in 9 ball a person can be on that week and end up holding the cash.

Article & Photos by: Robbin IrelandIt all began in 1996 in a cold, drafty, barn-like building in Kelso, Washington. Now, 20 years later, this event has grown into the largest Regional 8-Ball tournament in the United States. March 8-15, 2015 saw 1410 players come to Chinook Winds Casino Resort® in Lincoln City, Oregon to compete in 16 divisions for almost $122,000 in prize money. Bad Boys Billiards Productions® supplied 80 7’ Diamond Tables and Tournament Direction. Lenny Marshall of OnTheRailTV® streamed matches every day. Western BCA’s Head Referee Darryl Farley, Chief Tournament Official Steve Marker, Payouts Supervisor Cathy Dunford and Podium Manager Pam Carraway and their crews all worked tirelessly to make this event the best it could be for all the players. Chinook Winds and staff were friendly and eager to help in any way. Before the 8-Ball Championships got going, the Chinook Winds Open 8-Ball Championships, led by Tournament Directors Mike Jensen and Andrew Monstis, took to the tables. This was a 3 part event, beginning with a Warm-Up Tournament Thursday night, followed by a Calcutta Friday evening and then on to the main event. The Warm-Up Tournaments featured 84 men and 12 women. These were double elimination, race to 3 events. In the women’s division, Vivian Villarreal cruised through to the point to await an opponent in the final. Shari Ross beat Deby Welfringer (3rd) to get into the final with Vivian and finished in 2nd place, while Vivian prevailed and gave us a glimpse of the champion that she is.The men’s field of 84 exceeded all expectations and finished in the wee hours. The pros dominated the field with only Chad Bisconer, Paul Marquez and Steve Lingelbach penetrating the top 12. 1st place was Rafael Martinez, 2nd/Jayson Shaw, 3rd/Josh Roberts, 4th/Stan Tourangeau, 5th-6th/Ace Brown and Corey Deuel, 7th-8th/Marc Vidal and Steve Lingelbach, and 9th-12th/Chad Bisconer, Dan Louie, Paul Marquez and Roger Bordley.The Calcutta was a well attended and spirited affair. Andrew Monstis, Paul Marquez and Carissa

Biggs took turns as Auctioneer. The men netted $25,280 and the women $6425, with the first place man earning $8908 for the winning bidder(s) and $2342 for the women’s champ bidder(s).Immediately following the Calcutta, the Women and Men’s CWOs got underway, with 2 rounds played Friday night, continuing through Saturday and finishing up on Sunday. The final 16 players in the men’s division were, as expected, mostly pros but with a few of our regional GrandMasters and Masters hanging with the big boys. John Morra took out Shane Van Boening in the point match (7-4). Meanwhile on the back side, there were some hard fought matches to see who would get through to the final. The 3rd place match came down to Shane and Corey Deuel. Shane was plagued with uncharacteristic misses and untimely fouls and quickly fell behind. In spite of 3 dry breaks by Corey, Shane found himself doing more watching than shooting and ended in 3rd place ($3000) and Corey moved on to the final.The final started out with 3 breaks and runs and Corey getting into the early lead (2-1). In game 4, John broke and then fouled on his first shot. Corey ran off the remaining 5 stripes and extended his lead (3-1). In game 5, Corey’s dry break resulted in John’s run out. (3-2). Each man had a shot at game 6 but, John’s miss on the 15-Ball left Corey with a wide open table. Couple that run out with a break and run in game 7 and Corey had a commanding 5-2 lead in the match. A messy game 8 went to Corey and he closed out the match with another break and run in game 9. (7-2).John looked to turn things around in the second set, shooting through a problem cluster before, missing the 13 ball and leaving Corey the table and the game. Corey broke and ran in game 2 and capitalized on a miss to run out in game 3. (3-0). John took advantage of Corey’s dry break in game

4 and ran out and broke and ran in game 5 to equal his game total in the first set. (3-2). In game 6, Corey again broke dry but an untimely miss by John gave him the table and the run out (4-2). John broke and ran in game 7 and Corey returned the

favor in game 8 (5-3). Corey blew up in game 9 and allowed John to run out and almost even the match (5-4). The next 3 games were breaks and runs but time ran out for John Morra (2nd place/$5000) as Corey Deuel clinched the title and accepted the plaque and a check for $10,000. The Women’s CWO field totaled 38. Western BCAs Cindy Sliva reminded us she is the real deal, working her way through the front side to the point match against Vivian Villarreal. She didn’t stop there, securing a place in the final with a 5-1 win over Vivian. Western BCA regional GMs, Kim Jones and Carissa Biggs played for a chance to knock out Vivian in the 3rd place match, with Carissa ending up in 4th place ($900) and Kim getting her shot at Vivian. Vivian had other plans, though, and held Kim to only one game and 3rd place ($1400) as she moved on to the final. The first set was all Vivian as she took it 5-1. In the second set, Cindy (2nd place/$2000) got an early 3-2 lead but Vivian (1st/4000) took the next 3 games (5-3) to close out the match. The CWO was a smashing success and is expected to grow and attract even more of our games top players in the future. Congratulations to the Champions and to Andrew, Mike and everyone who helped make this event what it is and will become. Many thanks to Chinook Winds for their generous sponsorship. Can’t wait to see who comes in October! As the CWO wound down on Saturday, the 8-Ball Championships grew closer. Players steadily arrived to get on the tables and get ready for the beginning of play on Sunday. Fun Night was well attended with a record number of players (84) signed up for Handicapped 10-Ball Singles. Russell Cearley (EV) emerged the winner. There were also Minis for all divisions offered and no shortage of players vying for table time.

Western BCA Celebrates 20 Years


Come Sunday morning Scotch Doubles got underway. 50 Master Mixed Scotch Doubles teams began the quest for the title and the $2000 1st Place check. Stan Tourangeau (LTD) and Sheila Clark (INL) went undefeated to the final after defeating Randy Baker (CC) and Jing Liu (LTD) in the point match. Adam Stromberg (LTD) and Phyllis Fernandez (INL) were sent to the back side by Randy/Jing and met them again in the 3rd place match but Randy/Jing were too strong and Adam/Phyllis had to settle for 3rd place ($950). Arriving at the final, Randy/Jing were warmed up and ready to shoot and took Stan/Sheila the first set handily by a score of 5-2 and were hoping for a double dip. The second set was a shorter race to 4. This time it was Stan/Sheila who were ready to go and closed out the match 4-1. Randy/Jing received 2nd place ($1380) and Stan/Sheila, all smiles, took home the crown and $2000.

There were 141 entrants in the Open Mixed Scotch Doubles division which also started Sunday morning. Tom Myers and Bonnie Russell (LCC) and Chris Sykes and Robin Adams (NPL) played through their respective preliminary brackets to meet in the point match on Monday. Tom/Bonnie prevailed (4-2) and were into the final. Chris/Robin went to the back side to play one match to get into the final against Terry Thurlow and Christy Morgan. Apparently, Chris/Robin were pretty determined to get another shot at Tom/Bonnie. The sent Terry/Christy home (3-0) in 3rd place ($940) in the short race to 3 match. Chris/Robin (1st place/ $1650) were more than ready for Tom/Bonnie (2nd place/$1240) this time around and made it a double dip, taking the first set 4-2 and the second 3-0.

While Scotch was winding down, the largest singles division, Men’s B Singles with 258 players, got on the tables at 6p. By Tuesday evening, there were 32 players left and by the end of play on Wednesday, two were left undefeated. Tom Bennett (SLC) and Alex Ip (LTD) met in the point match. Alex moved on to the final in a tight 4-3 match win. As so often happens, the final was a repeat of the point match with one player hoping for a different outcome. Tom had to play Jeremy Gradwohl (NPL) for the final spot and he took that match by a score of 4-2. Alex, however, wasn’t interested in a different outcome and took it to Tom (2nd place/$825), winning by a score of 4-1 and capturing the title and the $1100 1st place check.The Men’s A Singles division (198 players) got going Tuesday morning. After preliminary bracket play, 32 made it to the final bracket. This path to the final was the exception to the ‘rule’ in that the point match was not a preview of the final. Benjie Grow (CWY) and Travis Gutcher (LTD) met in the point match, with Travis moving on to the final by a score of 5-4. Benjie waited to see who would emerge and play him for the second seat in the final. Jason Young (PCGP) ended Benjie’s quest for a spot in the final, leaving him in 3rd place ($915). Jason, having not played Travis, had only one plan in mind - double dip. The first set went hill-hill with Jason taking the match 5-4. The second set was an equally hard fought battle and, again, Jason prevailed by a score of 5-3. Travis left in 2nd place ($1240) and a very happy Jason Young, accepted the title and $1600.

Western BCA Celebrates 20 Years

The Men’s Senior Singles division started Tuesday at 12n. There were 58 entrants, wily veterans all, after the title and $565. Greg Cantrall (NPL) and Mike Gwinn (TC) met in the point match with Greg securing a seat in the final by a score of 5-0. After losing his 2nd match, newcomer Bill Howie (WWA) played his way through the back side to get to Mike and a spot in the final. Bill secured the spot in a 5-2 win over Mike (3rd/$290). Bill got by Greg in the first set of the final 5-3, but the second set was another story. Greg got down to business and held Bill (2nd place/$400) to just 1 game, winning the match by a score of 5-1.

Women’s Senior Singles, traditionally the smallest division with just 9 entrants, started play Wednesday at 3p. Kathy Murphy (INL) beat Lynda Moore (NPL) in the point match 4-2. Lynda played Patti Hayes (CWY) for the remaining seat in the final but lost by a score of 4-1. It took two sets, but after Patty (2nd place/$125) won the first set 4-2, Kathy settled down and won the second set 4-0, to capture the title and $240.

The Open Women got underway Wednesday morning with 98 women entered into the Women’s B Singles division. Eunice Sleight (NPL) and Andrea Tomma (CWY) went undefeated into the point match with Andrea winning a spot in the final (4-2). Christy Morgan (INL), after losing her second match, played through the back side to meet Eunice (3rd place/$375) for the open spot in the final. Christy wasn’t ready to quit playing and won the match by a score of 4-1. Still not ready to give in, Christy double dipped Andrea (2nd place/$510) in the final, taking the first set 4-0 and, in spite of a strong effort on Andrea’s part, took the second set 4-3 and the title and $685 were hers.

Also starting Wednesday morning, the 78 women entered in the Women’s A Singles division took to the tables hoping for a chance to win the $900 first place prize. 24 hours later, Cassie Francois (LTD) met Christy Loehding (INL) in the point match with Christy moving into the hot seat with a 4-3 win. Cassie went to the back side and waited for Jennifer Acker (SWI), who she had sent back earlier, to play for a seat in the final. This time Jennifer reversed the 4-1 loss into a 4-1 win and moved on to the title match. Christy was ready for Jennifer (2nd place/$625) and clinched the title with a 4-2 win.

Last, but by no means least, came the Master divisions. The Women’s Master division, with 37 entrants, began play Wednesday evening. Jessica Orth (NPL) and CarlaJean Beers (SWI) were undefeated going into the point match. Jessica won the hot seat (5-1) and CarlaJean went to the back side for one last chance to get into the final. Barb Thompson (NPL) was just a little too much for CarlaJean (3rd place/$435), taking the match by a score of 5-4. Jessica, however, was up to the task in the final, winning by a score of 5-2 and accepting the 1st place prize of $1075. Barb, in 2nd place, took home $690.

The Men’s Master Singles division fielded 73 entrants, all with their eye on the $1800 1st place prize. Steve Tune (CPL) and Randy Baker (CC) played to the point match, with Steve edging out Randy and winning a spot in the final by a score of 6-5. Jim Conway (LTD) took a longer route to get to the final and had to beat a hot Randy Baker (3rd place/$830) to get there. The final was yet another double dip, with Jim taking the first set 6-2 and the second set 6-4 and sending Steve home in 2nd place ($1225). This was Jim’s 2nd Men’s Master crown.

As the singles competition came to a close, on came the Teams. Friday morning, the 75 teams in the Men’s Mixed Open Team division filled the room. Two WWA teams would met in the point match, Hi Tide Tsunamis (Vince Draper, Kim Raymond, Rich Rottle, Joe Tamura, Paul Valley) and Browns, Whites and Gray (Bruce Gojetia, Mark Goodwin, Sean Gray, Jeff Lantor, Jeff Wells). The two teams played to hill-hill before Hi Tide Tsunamis won the match and the hot

seat. Browns, Whites and Gray would have to get by PCGP’s Playhouse (Kevin Brennan, Max Ervin, Jason Patrick, Gary Welch, Jason Young) to make it an all WWA final but Playhouse had other ideas, leaving Browns, Whites and Gray in 3rd place ($1775) and moving on to the final. It was a hard fought battle, but Hi Tide Tsunamis (1st place/$2900) won by a score of 13-11, led by Rich Rottle with 4 wins and Jim Draper with 3.

Also starting Friday were the Men’s/Mixed B Teams, with a field of 71 teams. CPL’s Retribution (Jason Bennett, Blake Fierro, Steve Hestmark, Isaac Norman, Evan Smelser) and SLC’s Uptown and Friends (Tom Bennett, Dan Cloe, Ricardo Gonzalez, Steve Johnson, Steve McLain, Clois Mosley) were undefeated going into the point match. Retribution won the match to get into the final by a score of 11-9. Uptown and Friends (3rd place/$1300) would have to get past NPL’s The Border (Manuel Arceo, Jose Ferral, Jesse Garner, Jeremy Gradwohl, Jorge Lopez) to get to the final but were unable to pull it off, losing by a score of 8-11. Retribution (1st place/$2200) wasted little time on The Border (2nd place/$1650), winning the final by a score of 11-3. Retribution was led to victory by Evan Smelser and Jason Bennett, with 3 games each.

WWA’s Startin’ Trouble (Casey Bowers, Dianne Knapp, Stacy Medina, Barb Sauls) and CPL’s In Progress (Tracey Cunningham, Linda (Smitty) Smith, Raquel Walton, Tamara Whitmire) played for the point with Startin’ Trouble winning 9-3. INL’s Diamond Girls (Linda Cassella, Christy Morgan, Kathy Murphy, Linda Thompson, Colleen Warner) took on In Progress (3rd place/$880) for the other spot in the final, taking the match by a score of 9-6. Startin’ Trouble put an end to Diamond Girls’ (2nd place/$1200) day by winning the match 9-5. Startin’ Trouble (1st place/$1640) was led by Dianne Knapp and Barb Sauls with 3 games each.

There were 15 teams in the Women’s Master Teams division. Loonies and Toonies (Stacy Eilts, Regene McDonnell, Cindy Sliva, Brenda Willis) and Thanks for Askin’ (Elizabeth Jensen, Mary Coffman, Suwanna Matarazzo, Shari Ross) played for the point with Loonies and Toonies taking the hot seat by a score of 13-8. Thanks for Askin’ had to get past Dominions (Carissa Biggs, Mary Olson, Natalie Seal, Ann Zack) to get another crack at Loonies and Toonies and they did just that (13-10), sending Dominions home in 3rd place ($640). The final was a hill-hill affair with Thanks for Askin’ (2nd place/$1140) coming up short just the one game. Loonies and Toonies, led by Cindy Sliva and Regene McDonnell with 6 games each, captured the title and the $2020 first prize check.

The final team event was the Men’s Master Teams, with 19 team entered. DJ Cues (Pete Gates, Sean Lewis, Dan Louie, Paul Marquez, Lawrence Sowell) and A Little Loaded (Matt Bryan, Russell Cearley, Steve Lingelbach, Mike Stevens, Bob Zack) went unbeaten through the front side to meet in the point match. DJ Cues took what would be round 1 of 3 by a score of 13-11. A Little Loaded detoured through the back side to play Soundview B&G #2 (Scott Chandler, Kenny Dodd, Ed Slade, Leo Violette, Don Wirtaman) and dispatched them by a score of 13-4 with a 3rd place finish ($1250). On to the final. Round 2 went to A Little Loaded, led by Mike Stevens with 5 wins, in a hill-hill match.Round 3 fell one game short of the maximum in another nail bitter. A Little Loaded, this time led by Bob Zack and Matt Bryan with 4 games each, again prevailed over DJ Cues (2nd place/$1925), this time 13-11. A very excited Russell Cearley clinched both sets of the final for his team.

Any time the cueball is too close to the rail to put your bridge hand on the table, you’re forced to use a rail bridge. The smaller the table, the more often this happens. On barboxes, a healthy percentage of your shots are from the rail. Rail bridges are needed frequently, and they’re worth a little attention.Let’s begin by looking at what not to do. Do not elevate the butt of your cue any further than absolutely necessary. Looking around the poolroom, you’ll see this a lot – players thinking they have to elevate to keep from miscuing. Some use a closed bridge (finger loop) because that’s the bridge they always use. What’s wrong with this? It’s too high. Using a closed bridge off the rail forces you to elevate simply to get the tip down to the vicinity of the ball. Others elevate because they feel they will miscue if they’re flat. Nah – chalk the edges of your tip, get your tip low enough on the cueball, get your stick flat, stroke well, sink balls.So, what’s wrong with elevating? For starters, when you elevate, the cueball jumps. It leaves the table surface on nearly every shot anyway, but as you elevate, you might get enough “air” to cause a miss. Also, if the cueball is frozen to the rail and you elevate and hit a little too high on the cueball, you risk trapping the ball between the tip and the table and not getting a clean hit. Worst of all, as you elevate, the amount of massé (curve) you get from left or right english dramatically increases. In other words, if you are elevated and you don’t hit precisely on the vertical axis of the cueball, the cueball is going to curve a lot more than with a nearly level cue. This is difficult to control, and if it’s unintentional, you’ll miss.Rails are made in two basic styles: flat and rounded. The curved ones allow you to get your bridge hand a little lower, making it easier to approach a level stroke. In addition, rails that are wider provide more options for hand placement and bridge length.Two rail bridges are all you need for the vast majority of shots: the Open Bridge and the Four Finger Bridge. The Open Bridge is almost the same as the version used on the table bed (palm down, thumb pressed against forefinger to make the bridge). The difference is you want to be very flat on the rail, so your bridge is low and you don’t have to elevate to get the tip down. Start with your hand flat. Pressing down with the tip of your

forefinger, drag the fingertip back toward your hand, allowing the middle knuckle to point up while the fingernail

knuckle curves down. This makes a little “wall” for

the stick to glide against. The best way to get lower with the Open Bridge is to lay the stick on the cushion cloth and then raise it up just enough to avoid touching the cloth on your stroke. Raise the stick that little bit by squeezing your thumb in closer to your forefinger. Experiment with this. It makes a big difference.The Four Finger Bridge is really the easiest way to control the stick from the rail:1. Lay the stick on the cushion cloth.2. Touch the thumb of your bridge hand to the palm, leaving

four fingers out.3. Lower the bridge hand onto the rail, straddling the stick

with your forefinger and middle finger (the thumb stays tucked under, out of sight).

4. Drop your palm to the rail, if possible.5. You now have the stick controlled through four points of

contact: cushion, forefinger, middle finger, and the thumb knuckle closest to the palm. It’s going where it’s pointed.

The Four Finger Bridge will give you confidence and control, while allowing the stick to be as low and flat as possible. Caution: Don’t use this bridge when the cueball is close to the rail – you might catch the tip on that little bump you sometimes find between the cushion cloth and the rail surface.Which bridge should you use when? It depends on which is more comfortable for a given shot. If the cueball is close to or frozen to the cushion, you’ll need the Open Bridge. Sometimes you need to make the Open Bridge with your fingertips out at the edge of the rail, to get far enough from the ball to have room to stroke. For these shots, press your fingers against the rail to stabilize the bridge hand. Sometimes it helps to lower your wrist also.As your aim line moves from perpendicular to the rail toward parallel, an Open Bridge will gradually become too long (too far from the cueball). Switch to the Four Finger Bridge. When the cueball is a little too far from the rail to bridge on the rail, but too close to bridge on the table, use the Four Finger Bridge and drape your fingers over the nose of the cushion and hug the cushion with your fingers to get stable.If you don’t like rail bridges, play on bigger tables, or play better position. When you can bridge with your hand on the table, you have the freedom to strike the cueball anywhere you choose.

I recently received the following question from a reader: Hello Michael, I think I am considered a fair pool player at our Community Center, but would be a better player if I did not so often “freeze” on the Eight Ball shot. I will run 3, 4 even 6 balls then miss a number of easy shots on the Eight Ball. Any suggestions? - Jerry

Yes. Most likely, you are telling yourself to miss the shot. The fact is, we know how to shoot. Most of the time, you can make the ball. Like driving a car, you can usually do everything you need to do without even thinking about it – and believe it or not, that is the key to playing well! Our subconscious minds are not capable of understanding negative thoughts. It is perception oriented, not verbally oriented. So, when I tell you not to think of the color red, that is the first thing you do! Your subconscious mind does not understand the concept of “don’t.” How many times have you said to yourself, just before a shot: “Ok, whatever you do, don’t overcut this ball,” only to take the shot and overcut it? It has happened to me many times, and I am sure it’s happened to you as well. Now, think about how many times you have shot a ball into the pocket, and all you were really focused on was cue ball position. Making the ball is a foregone conclusion; you just want the cue ball to get to the perfect spot to make your next shot. Most of the time, the object ball goes in, right? That’s because your subconscious mind and your muscles already know what to do. Sometimes, you’ll be down on your shot, and something nags at you, telling you the shot isn’t going to go in. You ignore it, shoot the shot, and you miss. How often have you heard someone say “I knew it was going to miss before I even shot it!” That was the subconscious mind trying to get your attention. Learn to hear it, and pay attention. If it’s telling you something’s wrong, stand up, reset yourself, and get back down on the shot. Don’t shoot the ball until it feels right.

So, Jerry, why are you missing the 8-ball? Because you are telling yourself to miss the 8- ball! Most likely, you are thinking to yourself, “I always miss this, and I’m probably going to miss this one too. Please, don’t miss it!” Your subconscious mind listens, strips away the negative “don’t,” and it receives the message: “Miss this shot!” Now, you get down on the shot, take a couple of practice strokes, and listen for that inner voice. Oh, good, it’s not giving you warning bells, awesome! You shoot, and promptly miss! There were no warning bells in your head, because your subconscious mind was told to miss, and it knew you were on track to miss. When we are running a table, and getting to the last ball we have to make to win, it’s very difficult to stop listening to that voice that tells us “Don’t screw this up now.” If you can manage to get into the zone, and just make balls until you have nothing left to shoot at, then your ego won’t get in the way. This is not an easy lesson to learn; I’m still struggling with this myself. When you are having this problem consistently, it makes it even harder to get out of it. Figure out a way to distract yourself, so you don’t have time to doubt your ability to make that final 8-ball. If you find that your conscious mind is trying to interfere, get up. Go take a sip of your beverage, chalk your tip, get down on the shot, and make it. After your match, I suggest that you set up the shot you missed, and practice it until you make it ten times in a row. You need to put a successful shot into your memory bank, so that your brain has a reference for the future. Then, next time you are faced with that final 8-ball shot, picture it going in the center of the pocket. Get down on the shot, and listen to your inner voice. Last month I warned you about the problems of using side spin. I hope that column didn’t scare you too much because the effective use of English is essential to your development as a pool player. It adds several dimensions to what you can do with the cue ball. This month’s column is intended for those who are just beginning to use side spin to make sure you get started in the right direction.In Shot 1 is a typical situation where a beginner can reasonably try adding the complications of English since the shot is short and there is not much angle. Of course if there is no positional reason to play with side it should be avoided, but let’s suppose the cue ball needs to be taken in some unnatural direction to break out a cluster or to get position on the next ball.Set up the shot with the 1 ball about a half-inch off the cushion and even with the diamond as shown, and the cue ball positioned back about a foot and with the cue stick passing over the second diamond. The other object balls are there as targets to hit when using left and right spin. You could also use a coin as your target.First, find out where the cue ball wants to go naturally. That is, shoot the shot softly and just let the cue ball roll into the 1 ball pocketing the 1. The natural simple rolling angle depends a little on the balls, cloth and cushion, but for most equipment the cue ball will go somewhere between the 4 and 5 balls if you put the 1 ball in the center of the pocket.Next, try a little right English. Position the cue tip so its left edge is at the center of the cue ball. I’d call this half a tip of English. Try the shot shooting softly and bringing your stick straight through on that offset line. If you miss it although you felt you were aligned well, you may be running into one or more of the problems I mentioned last time. Don’t worry about the exact cause, but do adjust your aim on the next shot. I hope you notice which side of the pocket you miss the ball on when you miss because otherwise you won’t know which way to adjust. Try some more shots with half a tip of spin and notice where the cue ball goes for that spin.Gradually work the tip out to the right side of the cue ball working on your aim for each offset. Strive for each shot

to put the object ball in the middle of the pocket. Did you remember to chalk for each shot? If you don’t

chalk you will learn by miscuing that you must not ever hit the ball offcenter and then your

game will be crippled permanently. So, chalk.For the position shown you should be able to get the cue ball to hit below the 2 ball for maximum right English.Next try left spin. In this case it will help to also use a little draw, so you will need to hit both low and to the left. The point is to keep follow off the cue ball which works against the left side spin, while for the right side spin a little follow was helpful. See if you can get the cue ball back as far as the 9 ball, always working on your aim.Finally, move on to Shot 2 where the angle is quite a bit steeper. What range of angles for the cue ball can you achieve with this cut angle?

Rudolf “Minnesota Fats” Wanderone once said, “Great players know that playing good just don’t cut the mustard.” There’s a lot of truth to what he said. Most pro players know that if they get too concerned about not being bad, they might not free themselves up enough to play to their potential. If you truly love pool, you must enjoy the fact that it is a very difficult game. If you spend time challenging the fact that pool is a game of errors and worry over trying to make it into a game that’s simple, you’re really trying to take all of the “fun” out of the game. In fact, in over 500 years of play, no one has ever completely mastered pool—not Willie Mosconi, not Steve Mizerak, not Shane Van Boening...and for that matter, I don’t believe that anyone ever will.When I see a pool player become irritated over a poorly struck shot, I know one thing for sure: they are not playing in the “present.” The player’s mind is lingering somewhere in the past,

focused on something that they no longer have control over.Most pool players refuse to accept mistakes. But in pool, mistakes are unavoidable. Accepting them is not a weakness. It’s an important part of developing mental toughness and being able to recover from

mistakes that you have made in the past. Nothing should bother or upset you when you are at the table, and you should have a positive mindset on every single shot. Acceptance should be practiced during every single game. After the match is over, it’s fine to make a quick assessment of where you made your mistakes. Reflection is an important part of becoming a better player. However, being able to control when you reflect is the mark of a champion.In fact, confident players think about what they are going to do when they return to the table. Those that lack confidence think about the things they don’t want to happen. Given two players of equal ability, the more confident one will win nearly 100 percent of the time. The reason they win is because they believe they are going to. If you play with confidence, you will respond well.When pool players are in the “DEAD SROKE,” it’s almost like they have a “joy stick” linking their mind to the cue ball. They think about nothing else. They are completely focused. The possibility of missing or scratching does not exist. Once they have decided what to do, the only thing that is on their mind is execution. To play subconscious pool, you must trust your stroke, and believe that your strategy will work. That’s easy to say, even harder to do. Once you miss hit a ball or two, your trust begins to diminish. Players try to fix their stroke, and they start thinking mechanically. Thinking this way is quite rational. If your stroke causes you to miss a shot, there is obviously some type of mechanical problem. Why should you trust a faulty stroke? The answer is that no one has a perfect stroke, and thinking mechanically is not going to make things better.The more I watch the best pool players in the world, the more I’m convinced that what separates the “professionals” from the “amateurs” is not how precise they are at playing position. It’s their proficiency at pocketing crucial shots in high-pressure situations. Professional players understand that difficult shots are an important part of the game. So stop belittling yourself if you miss. Missing a ball only means you are human. Players that compete with a positive attitude don’t get upset when they miss a difficult shot. They figure that everyone’s going to miss sooner or later and accepting the fact that you will miss on occasion is one way that you can separate yourself from your opponents. Instead of worrying about a miss, think of how devastating it will be for your opponent if you pocket that long, hard, difficult shot. Nothing discourages an opponent any more than losing a game they thought they would win.

Jackie Karol (formerly Broadhurst) has been a pool player for as long as she can remember. She was born in Richland, WA and then moved to Philadelphia as a child. In her teen years, when some kids were looking for minimum wage jobs, Jackie was trying to setup money matches in addition to working. From Philadelphia, she moved to Denver, CO and has a degree in Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and supported her pool career along the way as a restaurant/bar owner, consultant, black jack and poker dealer and car salesperson.

After years on both amateur and pro tours and numerous tournament wins including both an 8-Ball and Trick Shot National Championships, Jackie has refocused her talents toward helping others reach their dreams in pool. Moving to Chico, CA in 2010, she provides demonstrations and challenge matches for festivals and fundraisers around the country. Along with her “Angels of Billiards”, Jackie has entertained and won over crowds with her personality, skill and ability to make pool accessible to men and women of all ages.

At the Chico Billiards Academy, she offers private and group lessons as well as structured courses to help people go from beginner to competitive player. She also operates a pro shop and carries cues, cases and many other supplies for both players and pool halls.

Jackie is also heavily involved in the community, participating in Rotary, 20-30 Active Club, Toastmasters, Chamber of Commerce, Young Professionals Association, Eagles, Elks and is the Treasurer of the Noon Exchange Club of Chico.

GOAL-SETTINGNo matter what kind of skill or level of skill you want, goal-setting has proven to be very effective. Achievers in various fields including athletes and business people use this technique. It gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It helps you focus and organize. It forces you to confront certain realities about your game so that you know what you need to improve on.

LONG-TERMNot every pool player has the desire to become a world-class pool player. But for people who love competition, it is their nature to be the best that they can be. The first step in setting goals is to consider what you want to achieve.

So at what level do you want to play pool?Do you want to beat all of your friends?Do you want to move up a rating in your league?Do you want to be the best in the world?

MEASURE First, you must have a specific measurement in mind to determine your long-term goal. For example, if your goal is to beat all of your friends, how many balls would you have to run to be the best player amongst your friends? Would the best be able to run 3 or 4 balls, or 3 or 4 racks? Write that number down. Next, you must measure your ability. For example, how many balls you can run without a miss, right now? ‘You must know where you are, to get where you want to go.’

Throw all 15 balls on the table, with ball-in-hand on your first shot, and see how many you can make without missing. Try this drill 20 or more times and record your highest run.

TIMEHow much time are you going to spend practicing to improve your performance? Consult an instructor on how much focused practice time he/she thinks it would take for you to achieve this goal. If you plan to practice only 1 hour a week, and your goal is to increase your high run by 50 balls, it could take you years to achieve this goal. But if you practiced for 6 hours/day, you may be able to achieve it in months. If you think it will take too much time for you to obtain your long-term goal, either consider more practice time or setting a lower long-term goal.

SHORT-TERMFirst, subtract your long-term goal from your current measurement of ability. For example, when I set my goal to win the BCA 8-Ball tournament, my long-term goal was 100 balls. One year prior, I could only run 32 balls, but I practiced for 6 hours/day, 6 days/week. Therefore, my long-term goal subtracted from current ability was 68 balls. Next, divide that number by the number of months or weeks that you plan to achieve your goal. I planned to run 100 balls in 1 year, so 68 divided by 12 is 5.6. Therefore my short-term goal was to increase my high run by 5 or 6 balls per month.

By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. After seeing this technique work, you will then be able to achieve even higher and more difficult goals.

Remember that if you are getting significantly higher or lower results than you expected, you can make adjustments. The next articles are designed to help you perfect your practice and be the best you can be in the shortest amount of time.

Well... For whatever reason, Just 12 players, only 6 Teams showed up for the opportunity. John Morra chopped through a star studded bracket to get to the point and showed he was in total command until coming up against Corey who held John to only 6 combined in games in both the finals matches on his way to the $10,000 1st place prize. Vivian Villarreal came out of the loser’s bracket, where she was sent packing by Cindy Sliva who waited on the point. Vivian got through tough competitor Kim Jones, to return to Cindy again. The finals match featured a lot of great play from both women. They both played like champions and Vivian had to struggle to capture the $4000 1st place check. Cindy once again showed why she is one of the Northwest’s finest, keeping up with seasoned professional, Vivian Villarreal. Chinook Winds added $21,000 to the 8-Ball Open events, $17,000 to Men’s division with guaranteed $10,000 for 1st and $5,000 to the Women’s division with $4000 guaranteed for 1st place. Western BCA added an additional $4000 to the events. The Men’s division raced to 7 and the Women’s raced to 5. 128 men and 38 women

entered, trying to get into the money.A $1000 added Warm up 8-ball tournament took place Thursday before main event. League players and those entered in Main event were welcome to play. 83 men entered the $25 entry, race to 3, Double elimination event. The short race can be an equalizer with top players. It was a smash event. There was over $3000 in prize money. Rafael Martinez took 1st, Jason Shaw 2nd, Josh Roberts 3rd, Stan Tourangeau 4th, Ace Brown and Corey Deuel 5th/6th, Steve Lingelbach and Marc Vidal 7th/8th. The Calcutta went off well. Auctioning through both fields took some time but it was well worth it. There was a net $25,280 in the men’s and $6425 in the women’s. Paul “Kez Dog” Marquez and Carissa Biggs helped out calling on bidders. It was a fun and exciting event.It took a lot of hard work producing the Chinook Winds Open event. Co-coordinators/directors Andrew Monstis and Mike Jensen worked 100’s of volunteer hours to make this event successful as it was. It was about pool. It was very rewarding to hear the praise coming from both participants and spectators. The top players all said it was the best event they have ever been too. First timers to the event

Champions of Chinook Winds Open 8-Ballsaid they had never seen such a great event. Others said this was the biggest event in the Northwest since “Ocean Shores” event in the early eighties. Special thanks to Mike Howerton, “Azbilliards”, Lenny Marshall “On The Rail TV”, Ozzie Reynolds of “Cuesports International” Ric and Bonnie Jones of Bad Boys Production and Chinook Winds & WBCA staff for their considerable help.They say it’s better at the beach and they are right! Chinook Winds Casino Resort is a full service facility and is an exceptional place for a tournament venue. Having this event tucked in at the beach in Lincoln City, Oregon creates an atmosphere you can’t find anywhere else. The huge gallery of spectators did watch many excellent matches as the Tournament unfolded. People were able to watch and learn what great pool playing is about. The crowds were in awe of top players like Vivian Villarreal, Stacy Allsup, Rebecca Wagner, Kathy MacDonald, Shane Van Boening, Scott Frost, Rodney Morris, Joshua Roberts, Danny Olson, Ace Brown and Jayson Shaw. They were equally dazzled by top local players like Cindy Sliva, Kim Jones, Carissa Biggs, Liz Cole, Danny Louie, Rafael Martinez, Stan Tourangeau, Matt Horner and Randy Baker. Barbara Martisch was hosted by Diablo Valley Pool Leauges and Vinnie’s Bar and Grill on Feb 7th 2015. Barbaras’ memories are still with us and always be.

Nineteen women showed up to participate in the competition, who toasted and reminisced about Barb. The sponsor Vinnie’s offered their delicious barbecue plate for $5. The children she so diligently raised and taken care of for years by Barb, all went to visit the location where she rests and shared stories and flew balloons in her honor.

Josie had a great day of shooting by knocking a bunch of the favorites out of the way and grabbing second place. Congratulations Josie !

Bonnie Koerner had to settle for 3rd place and Shawn Modelo went totally undefeated the whole event. Shawn’s game is on fire. !!!

Fred passed away on March 15, 2015. His funeral was in Union City, TN. There will be a Memorial Service in Daytona Beach, FL at Westside Baptist Church on Mason Avenue April 4th at 10 am. Fred had so many friends all over the world. Just know that had he been able to call, text or facebook you, he would have. I want to thank you for the beautiful flowers, cards and phone calls. The Payette division of the South Western Idaho BCA League held their 8 ball banquet and awards ceremony at the Boomerang Saloon in Payette, Idaho, on February 24, 2015. First place was won by the Deadstroke Boomerang Team. Second place was won by Jacob's Well Mavericks and third place winners were the Palisades team, Brad's Boys.

Top shooters in the league were Ronnie Seiber who won 540 games with a win percentage of 80% and most consecutive with 15 wins. In second place was Bruce Davis with 529 wins and a win percentage of 75%.

This division is a small division but has some awesome players with a lot of love for the game and each other. A long time member of the community and the Payette pool family and member of the Jacob's Well Mavericks Team passed away the week before league ended. Doug Sparks will be missed by us all. Happy pool playing in heaven Doug!

LAKEWOOD, WAIf you’re 18 or younger and love to play pool, then the WA State Junior Championship tournament is meant for you. The WA Junior State Championship will be held at Cue-Topia Billiards in Tacoma WA May 16-17 (see tournament listing for more details). This event will be 9 ball race to 3, double elimination. Divisions will be: boys 18 & under, boys 14 & under and girls 18 & under. Entry into the event is $10. All players must be BEF members. To become a BEF member just go to the www.billiardeducation.org site and become a member.This is a tournament for ages 18 and under. We have 4 spots reserved for the winners of each division to play at the National BEF Junior Championships. Spots will be awarded to the top 18 & under girl finisher, top 18 & under boy finisher, top 14 & under boy finisher and the top 14 & under top girl finisher. Winners of each

division in the State Championships will win a trophy, free entry into the National BEF event and money to go towards a scholarship fund. The BEF National event will be held at the South Point Hotel & Convention Center in Las Vegas August 4-7. The winners of each division have the opportunity to win a scholarship for college.Prior to the event there is a banquet where all the participants and families can attend and get acquainted with one another. Parents is a good excuse to get out of town and relax. This is a great event for the juniors. The BEF does great things to bring the youth to our sport. WA State Junior Championships Held at Cue-Topia Billiards

The Pot-O’-Gold Tournament at the Scoop Bar in Bozeman, MT saw a field of 13 teams totaling 26 players. The progressive pot Scotch doubles style meant only one team went away from the tournament without prize money or a free giveaway. The tournament scheme allowed for a fun single day of VNEA doubles 8-ball mixed with the ‘Luck of the draw’ for the winners of each bracket. Sponsorship by the Scoop Bar resulted in a good pot for the size of the field! Local pool players are thankful to have such a supporting and consistent sponsor for our tournaments!

Players from Three Forks to Livingston paid a $20 entrance fee and split games to see who got the wins to draw from the ‘GOLDEN DOLLAR’ coins! Every round consisted of drawing golden coins from the Leprechaun’s Pot-O’-Gold, one special coin per round being a 2X multiplier for that round. Many of the bracket matches were an exciting and very close race to three!

There were prize give-ways consisting of a $15 bar tab and another that was $15 in Susan B. Anthony and golden coins. The Scoop bar provided coffee and muffins in the morning and then a delicious corned beef and cabbage lunch.

Play during the early rounds was fun with many winners drawing golden coins, while later brackets had a greater chance to draw the lucky multiplier. Once the brackets reached a point of only two winners per round, then the progressive pay ended and payouts began….that meant a 50/50 chance to draw to draw a multiplier! While the bracket matches had an official lag to decide the first break, the break then alternated by team and by team mate in the race to three.

Since the top six teams got a payout, nearly half of the field saw money greater than the entrance fee. Using this progressive pay approach resulted in nearly all the teams getting some money! Exciting to see a tourney where most of the players made some money back! It was a tight race, with some of the teams meeting a second time on their way to the top. Peter Asmuth and Cody Jones, Seth King and Charlotte Stansberry tied for fifth place. Dave Biesel and Cole Lininger got fourth place. Third place went to Stephan Solberg and Jeremy Jones. Second place was Vance Miyakawa and Jeff Koski. Roger Scott and Davey Labrie captured first place in a single match to win!

Several teams fought very hard and nearly made it up thru the loser’s bracket. Jeff Picket and Misty Debates just missed the money, while Peter Asmuth and Cody Jones made it into the payouts with some lucky multipliers too! Top three teams won the very

Malarkey’s Feb 28-Mar 1, 2015Every year, Malarkey’s Pool & Brew hosts the February Freeze 9-Ball Tournament and every year, more top notch pool players in the Pacific Northwest come to Tacoma, WA to compete. This year, we had a full field of 84 great players (73 men and 9 women) from Washington, Oregon, California and Canada; with a last

minute surprise competitor from South Dakota…Shane Van Boening. SVB happened to be in the area doing an exhibition in Tacoma and he accepted Malarkey’s invitation to enter the tournament. As soon as word got out that SVB would be there, the entries came flooding in with players anxious for the opportunity to compete against the #1 ranked Pro Pool Player in the country. The format was 9-Ball on the 9-foot

tables, winner break, race to 7 on the A side and race to 6 on the B side; the race went to 7 once they got to the money rounds. Rail2Rail provided the Live Stream, free to viewers and Score Saloon tracked the scores of the matches online. Spectators accurately predicted the final to be the two pros in this field; SVB and

Rafael Martinez. To get there, both these fine players battled through an 84 player field. The random draw put Van Boening and Martinez at opposite ends of the bracket and both men defeated their opponents in quick succession, until the semi-final round of the winners’ side. That’s when Martinez came up against Dan Louie, who charged through his bracket as well. Louie broke Martinez’s winning streak, beating him 7-3 and earned a spot in the point match against SVB. Meanwhile, Van Boening was chewing through his opponents, not allowing any of them to get more than 4 games on him; that is, until he got to the 6th round. There, he met Sean Lewis, who had been blazing his own trail through the bracket, was on fire and who was very much up to the challenge of facing SVB on the stream table. In the longest match Van Boening played, Lewis played tough and smart to give the nationally ranked pro a real hill/hill grind of table runs and safeties. Lewis’ last safety in the 13th game of the set rolled just a little far and gave SVB an opportunity back to the table; he made an incredible shot from a tough spot, finishing the rack and the match, 7-6. Dan Louie and Shane Van Boening would play for the point, while Rafael Martinez and Sean Lewis each had to beat one more player before meeting each other in the match for 4th place. Lewis defeated Todd Marsh and Damian Pongpanik lost to Martinez. In the quarterfinal match, Lewis and Martinez both played strong, but it was Martinez that would come out the victor and Sean Lewis finished 4th place. Martinez waited to play the loser of the match for the point. The point match was announced and a crowd gathered to watch national and world champion from South Dakota, Shane Van Boening play against local favorite and past national champion from Mercer Island, WA, Dan Louie. Van Boening continued his own winning streak by beating Louie 7-3 and laying claim to the hot seat. After SVB sent Dan Louie over to the B side, Louie and Rafael Martinez had a rematch. Louie was fresh off his loss to SVB and did not play as well as he did in his first match up with Martinez. Louie gave Martinez too many chances with uncharacteristic misses, while Martinez found his groove and got into a rapid but smooth stroke, to defeat Louie by the same score Louie had beaten him by earlier, 7-3 and move on to the final match. Malarkey’s was packed with pool fans from all over the Seattle/Tacoma area to see former world champion Rafael Martinez face the current #1 US ranked pro player, Shane Van Boening. The final match of the February Freeze was one of the fastest in Malarkey’s history. SVB expertly ran through 6 straight racks in about 15 minutes. He broke and scratched on the 7th rack, finally giving Rafael Martinez a chance at the table. Martinez, the calm and quick shooter who easily defeated Dan Louie in the semi-final, seemed rushed and uncomfortable in this final as he pocketed the first few balls. Unfortunately, he miscued on the 6-ball, giving control of the table back to SVB and that was the end of the match, as Van Boening quickly ran out the rest of the rack, to win the match 7-0. Rafael Martinez took 2nd place and Shane Van Boening won the title of February Freeze 2015 Champion.

LAKEWOOD, WAShane VanBoening broke the unofficial 220 Behind the Rock Tour world record at Cue-Topia Billiards February 24, 2015. Cue-Topia Billiards was honored to have Shane VanBoening come to Cue-Topia Billiards for an exhibition, clinics and lessons March 24-27. This exhibition was something we will all remember. The exhibition started with an enjoyable shuttle ride from the local casino to the pool room. As spectators entered the exhibition they were given a piece of paper and pencil to write a question for Shane to answer in the exhibition. VanBoeing started the exhibition giving a short biography of his career and his personal experiences. He told some comical and entertaining stories and also hit on the more serious side of life making the statement “that we, as human beings are not all perfect and that’s okay”. This really set the tone for the event and made it very personal for all of us. From there Shane went on to answering questions.The questions ended up being very interesting and informative for all. What was so special about the questions was that VanBoening did not take the questions lightly. He methodically thought about his answer and if he wasn’t clear on the question he didn’t just throw it aside. He stopped and asked for clarity to make sure he was giving the best answer. Shane made everyone feel this was their personal experience. A true compassionate man and true gentleman. Once VanBoening finished the questions, gave some tips about the game the fireworks started.Shane agreed to play a Behind the Rock 220 match. The previous unofficial World Record was 186 points shot by Adam Smith in Tunica at the Southern Classic event in 2012. For those of you that are new to Behind the Rock (BTRT) let’s go over the format a little. BTRT is an animal of a different color. It’s an all new format where matches are played from any certified location (which would include pool rooms, bars, bowling alleys or any location with pool tables and an Event Coordinator (EC)). Each week a new tournament starts on Sunday and is open to matches all week long. Different rooms play on different days. Saturday night at midnight, matches from different locations are uploaded by the EC’s to the website and the tournament is closed. Sunday the tournament is calculated, new handicaps are calculated and payouts are done every Monday.BTRT games are all offense with no opponent which means you have no excuses. It’s all about what you do at the table from racking to running balls. We play two different games and within each game are 4 divisions and a true 90% handicapping system is used. 220 is played on the 9 foot table and 198 is similar to 220 but it’s played on the 7 or 8’ foot tables. Players play 11 games for a match. 220 was derived off the game of 10 ball vs. the Ghost. These are the basic rules. Break, take ball in hand after the break and run balls in rotation until the player fouls misses or runs out. Players earn a point per ball. If

a player breaks and runs there are some scoring twists that take place and we’ll go over those as we watch Shane’s upcoming match. Other rules are All Ball Foul rule, don’t touch or move anything on the table or game over, scratch on the break is minus a point and all balls spot that were pocketed on the break, any ball pocketed is a point as long it was a legal hit, remember we’re playing by 9 ball rotation rules, but playing with 10 balls.Shane’s match was a 220 match and it went down like this.He started out the first game and ran to the 4 ball which he missed (looked like the ball skidded on him). Missing a ball is game over. Game 2: Shane broke and didn’t make a ball on the break and ran out, Cut game. Game 3: again didn’t make a ball on the break, but took the option to not take ball in hand which converted game 2 from a Cut game to a COE and ran out. Game 4: pockets a ball on the break, took the option again, converting game 3 to a COE and ran out. Game 5: pockets a ball on the break and runs out, Snap game. Game 6: he does not make a ball on the break and runs out, Cut game. Game 7: makes a ball on the break takes the options converting game 6 to a Cut game and runs out. Game 8: he makes a ball on the break and runs out, Snap game. Game 9: Snap game. Game 10: Cut game, taking the option in game 11 converting game 10 to a COE, breaks and runs game 11 and game 12 for two more Snap games. Shane broke and ran 11 games making a new World Record of 197 points. The stats for his match were: 3 consecutive snap games, 6 total snap games, 3 COE, 1 Cut game, 1 extra 10 Ball and one miss. To sum it up out of 12 games one miss and 11 break and runs. This may sound like an easy feat because you have the option to take ball in hand after the break, but let me tell you it’s quite a feat especially when you keep in mind that it was the first time ever that Shane played this format. This was a great evening and spectators went home with stars in their eyes and truly appreciated the professionalism, talent and expertise they had just witnessed. Banks Lake Pub hosted the Grand Coulee Dam Area Men and Women's League End of Season tournaments. First was the women's league that was held on March 6-7, 2015 with Banks Lake Pub #1 ladies coming back from a loss to take the tournament in the finals. The men's league was held on March 14, 2015 and the Banks Lake Pub #6 Team also coming back from the B Side bracket to take the tournament in the finals.

Southwest Idaho BCAPL 8-ball wrapped up last night with a play-off between the 3 divisions.

8 Teams qualified for the play-offs consisting of the top 2 teams from each division & 2 wild-card positions determined by win percentage. We took a break for a successful showing at Western BCA 8-ball tournament with over 50% of our league players making the trip to the Oregon Coast to represent the state of Idaho. Four teams started the night off , but the finals were represented by Vista Bar from the Boise division & Getaway Bar from the Nampa Division. Vista Bar came out on top even after giving up 3 handicapp points per round. I am looking forward to the new season with 9 ball starting on June 3rd. Thanks for all the fun!

TWCWT atMembers of the Tiger West Coast 9 Ball Women’s Tour

have begun preparation towards the 2015 session. The 2014 session was another success, the session began with a first time kick-off event with a combo 8/9 ball event at Hard Times in Sacramento, with $1000 being added. Another highlight of the year was the addition of a new sponsor, Diamond Billiards in Modesto.

TWCWT had three participants in the 2015 WPBA Regional Tour Championships in Herdon, Va. Stephanie Hefner, and Shawn Modelo participated in the National event for the second year in a row. For 2015 the 3 participants were Stephanie Hefner, Leslie Bernardi and Shawn Modelo. This was Leslie’s first year

Leslie started playing pool around the age of 14. She lived in a mobile home park and there was a table in the rec hall that she used to play on. Her hobby changed to the game she loves around the age of 16 when her dad started taking her into bars and shooting in doubles tournaments.

She has been part of TWCWT off and on for about 6 or 7 years now, but 2015 was the first time she attended the RTC’s. “The competition was incredible. I loved playing against all the ladies. The round robin format was intense and a lot of fun.

My advice to new players is if your goal is to improve then play against players that are better than you. You

will lose most of the time in the beginning which can be frustrating but watching the more skilled players play is how you’ll learn and improve....Even if you don’t think you’re learning anything except how to rack the balls well!”

Stephanie’s parents had a table in the garage when she was 3-4, so she was exposed at a young age. She played off and on at friends’ houses and in bars and always loved the game but didn’t start taking it seriously until 2012.

Her game went from a pastime to a hobby she

loves when she watched a TWCWT stop at Hard Times Sacramento in 2010 and was both inspired and incredibly intimidated. She spent the next year preparing mentally and playing local tournaments and promised herself she would play the tour stops the following year. The first stop she played she lost every match! But she LOVED every second of it and has made it to every stop since 2011. She also joined the board of directors in 2012.

She attended both the 2014 and 2015 RTC’s. “What I loved most about the RTC’s was the level of competition. There are so many tough players who are clearly dedicated to pool. Both years I went, I felt invigorated and inspired. Although I managed to exceed my own expectations, I loved watching players who’ve been competing for decades and the finesse and expertise that comes along with that much time.”

Her primary goal is to continue to learn and improve. “I never want to become stagnant or lazy. I want to give this my best shot and see how far I can go. I respect this sport and all of the players that dedicate their lives to it and want to honor it by always putting my best foot forward.

I think my story is a good example of what is possible if you love the game, set goals, and have discipline. I’m sure there are some players who would have let their pride or fear keep them from playing in a big tournament like the TWCWT. Losing every match isn’t fun! But I believed in myself and wanted to learn from the experience. So my advice would be that if you love this game and want to be the best player you can be, learn from every loss, every missed shot, every tail-between-legs stomping. Don’t let these things discourage you, but instead let them push you little by little into the player you strive to be. If you admire a pro player or local champ, study them and others like them. Put the time in and I promise you, you’ll slowly see the change in your own game.”

Shawn Modelo started to play pool in 1995. She Joined Diablo Valley Pool Leagues’ local bar table competition in the city of Concord, CA in 1998.

She enjoys playing with women who like playing pool. Her game continues to improve. She likes to put herself

out there to play and win. She became a master when she won the entire ACS Senior category a few years ago in Las Vegas.

Shawn is happy with her accomplishments, however she feels like there is still a lot of pool to learn. She has been a part of TWCWT for 6-7 years.

She also enjoys talking about the game and shares that enjoyment with her pop and her husband. Her best moments of her career contain sheer satisfaction. “Knowing

Her suggestion to new players: Practice, practice, practice.
