Fisher Wins Jeanette Lee after winning her second tough match to get to the finals Karen Corr playfully eyeing the table by: Don “Cheese” Akerlow I flew into Portland Thursday at 4 pm, got my rent-a-car headed south to Hwy 99 through the rolling hills and over the coastal mountain range arriving at Chinook Winds in Lincoln City. I got to watch some of the early matches involving Allison Fisher, Ewa Laurance and Jeanette Lee, Ikumi Ushiroda, as well as our local talent Martha Hartsell, Linda Carter and Hsin Huang. It’s pretty much like any other tournament you’d find in any pool hall, some came dressed to kill, some were casual, but it did not by any means diminish their play. As great as these ladies are, they can still miss or dog a shot like the rest of us, but saying that, make no mistake these ladies can play. Beauty and brains are the normal not the exception. While sitting and watching, one thing that impressed me was, not only can these ladies shoot, they rarely make mistakes or take chances on shots. In a game like 9-ball, where each player is shooting at the last ball the other missed, calculated safeties are strategies that are practiced and must be executed precisely. There’s not a “go for it” attitude on a low percentage shot. Even the lesser known players possess these talents. Just watching them will make your game better. There was a turnout of thousands of fans that came to watch within the four days, autograph seekers and enthusiasts of the game. As I sat and watched, numerous autograph seekers, sought their quest after each match was finished with enthusiasm and bright-eyed as any child seeking their presents on Christmas or any birthday. What a thrill it is to have the WPBA National 9-Ball Championship here in the Northwest where pool is the game we love. I had the distinct honor of sitting in the press section covering two semi finals and the finals that are to be shown on ESPN (first scheduled showing is January 4 th at 4pm Pacific Standard Time on ESPN2), with a crowd nearing 1,000 onlookers. The Master of Ceremonies, Steve Tipton, entertained the crowds before and between the matches with trivia, jokes and introduced the VIP’s as well as doing a little “hokey pokey” and sometimes even serenading while the ladies were waiting to play. Witnessing the behind- the-scenes action at one of these events is very interesting. You don’t have the smooth transitions as they appear on the finished broadcasts. What you do have is the players being cued when to start their play, a low key commentating being heard in the background and a camera man following the action going on at the table. Talk about distractions and sharking a player, this has to be the ultimate. Playing in the first semi-final were Monica Webb and Jeanette Lee. After the introductions play began. The crowd of approximately 1,000 spectators cheered and clapped for what was to begin an afternoon and evening of some exciting pool. Webb and Lee battled back and forth with Jeanette tying it at hill-hill. And the battle raged on until Jeanette finally won. She was so happy (WPBA continued on page 18)

Cascade-Classic Pool Seminar a Sensation“Fantastic opportunity from those who have what it takes to consistently win under pressure”…seminar participant Art Sasaki

“History was made,” said GlennAtwell. An idea that sproutedseveral years ago and was scoffedat by critics came to be onNovember 16th. The first-ever all-day pool seminar taught by severalarea instructors took place atClassic Billiards in Portland,Oregon, and by the feedback, wasa huge success.Along with Glenn, instructors JohnMorabito, Pat Schumacher, BradGowin and Andrew Monstis sharedsome of their 25 to 40 years worthof skills and insider techniques.“We all agreed that it would be agreat way to give back to the poolcommunity something for the yearsof pool being very good to us,” saidAndrew. “We are also meeting aneed in the area. I’ve had this ideafor several years and it has finallycome together.”Twenty-seven eager participants, whose skills ranged from beginner

to accomplished player, divided intogroups and rotated hourly fromteacher to teacher, where theylearned or honed skill after skill. Itwas a day packed with informationand even lunch, all for $60. Theseminar helped players withprescribed pool insight into fiveareas of essential pool informationand skill development. The goal ofthe seminar was to share skills andinside techniques on aiming, banking & kicking, shot rehearsal, draw shots, and cue ballpositioning. Participants alsoreceived a seminar manual andClassic Billiards provided cards forfree practice hours. The cost of the seminar was keptdown by the help of the sponsorsand promoters: Cascade PoolLeague, a BCA & VNEA League;Classic Billiards on 122nd and SEPowell in Portland; Dragonfly Tattooin Vancouver Washington; Bigfoot

Billiards, a table recoveringand manufacturing companyin Troutdale, Oregon; On theBreak, monthly pool newsfrom Montana; PCC-Products (Cue Clean)International Distribution; andOn The Wire, monthly poolnews, Troutdale, Oregon. The feedback surveycomments included “Topnotch group!!!”… “I would doanother seminar!”… “Thelunch provided was a greattouch.”… “Excellent!”…“Overwhelming for one day

but completely worth it.”…”I could

have done more hours of this.”…“Highly impressed!”… “Theinstructors were skilled andinteresting!”… “More practicetime”… “I liked the broad range ofinstruction but too little time”…

“Fantastic opportunity from thosewho have what it takes toconsistently win underpressure”…”Can’t wait for the nextseminar”… The survey alsoshowed on a scale of 1 through 10,the average response was a 9.1 thatthe participants thought the seminarwas a great value and the materialwas presented clearly byknowledgeable and preparedinstructors. They liked the rotatingformat, would recommend theseminar to others, and wouldparticipate in another similarseminar. The response was so tremendous

that the staff is eager to put onanother seminar soon. “We’ll beplanning more seminars through thewinter and spring,” said AndrewMonstis.

Pool Halls - Are They AVanishing Breed?

In slow economic times, many things may contribute to the life or death ofa pool hall. As in real estate, there are 3 very important guidelines to follow, location, location, location. The pool halls financial success may alsodepend upon curfews, gang colors and the economic stability of yourclientele. In some areas going smokeless whether it was legislated or ofthe owner’s own volition has seen a drop in clientele. The neighborhoodalso may have changed around you. With urban sprawl, the pool hall maybe what now has become too far away.In the 70’s and 80’s a chain of pool halls were started called “CornerPocket”. With virtually the same layout in each pool hall that favored thespectator and/or other players to view important games, but they too fellon hard times and were sold off individually. The pool halls I grew up in 35to 40 years ago were smoke-filled, gambling havens, whether cards, cribbage or games on the slate. There was a code of ethics that the playersrespected. Many of the owners didn’t allow cursing, which causedarguments that led to fights. Some of your owners or employees of theroom ran “book” (illegal gambling that the government didn’t take moneyfrom). Not all pool halls were that way, some were true to the game of pool,be it 9-Ball, One Pocket or Straight. You came in, played by the hour andthere was always a sign “no gambling”. The “no gambling” meant “no moneyon the table”. Pool halls back then didn’t have to deal with technology. Wehad pinball machines and that was pretty much it. Today if a pool halldoesn’t have video games, digital juke box, satellite TV, alcohol, food, leagues, billiard supplies and maybe even an internet connection you’renot keeping up with your competition. You can’t attract the players whohave the money and time on their hands. There have been closures ofpool halls up and down the West Coast and some I don’t know about. Hereare a few: 211 Club (WA), Q Street Billiards (OR), Kelowna Q Club (BC),Blondies Billiards (BC), Felts Club (CA), Oakdale Billiards (CA) and CueBall’s Billiards (MT).In March of 2003, a movie was released called “Poolhall Junkies”, thatdepicted violence and cursing as part of its theme. Perhaps coupled withthe struggling economy, this has had an effect on different pool halls aroundthe country. Is this a sign of the future of pool? In this new millennium, willthe game of pool be relegated to seven foot tables? By itself that would bea shame, there must be a choice – Pool halls do survive and they cansurvive in the twenty first century. So if you’re lucky enough to have a poolhall close to you, relish the opportunity. If not, get in your car, take a bus, streetcar, mule train, horse and buggy, any way you can, just get there.Email me at: [email protected] OTB

MNWTRoom Owners ShowTremendous Heart !!!

Brett Seyler (1st), Bob Ohashi (2nd), John Campbell (owner)

By: Darin WaldingLet’s Play Billiardsplayed host to thes e c o n dMcDermott Tourstop in Oregon. This eventfeatured a race to7 in 9-ball and$1000.00 addedto the kitty. Webegan at 11:00amto await the latearrivals, this inpart to the shortnumber of entries.

Almost 48 people had called in to express their interest in playing, however,22 players paid their way in. The light number of entrants didn’t face thegracious room owner’s of Let’s Play Billiards, Gary French and JohnCampbell. They showed tremendous heart in making sure all $1,000.00cash was added despite the less than anticipated field. My personalthoughts are “Isn’t it strange to see more heart from a room owner thanfrom Northwest pool players?” The tournament was successful with orwithout a full field, it was disappointing to me to have heard throughout theyears how there are no good tournaments in Oregon, and when we dohave a strong added pot, the players call in sick?I think the pool players of the Northwest at least owe an apology for notsupporting pool, or at least the integrity to not whine about lack of events inthe NW.The winner of the tournament was BCA Men’s open champion Brett Seyler. The results are as follows:1st $850 Brett Seyler2nd $550 Bob Ohashi3rd $350 Al Perez4th $200 Mike Stevens5/6th $ 75 Gary French, Jim Kellogg

Trick Shot ExhibitionCity Lights Billiards - Dec.21,2003 at 4PM

445 Tacoma Ave S., Tacoma, WA(235)383-3301

This month’s artistic shot is from the draw discipline and has a degree ofdifficulty (DOD) of 9. This shot in my opinion should have a DOD of 11.This is an extremely challenging shot. To set this shot up place B ball bythe long rail one ball’s width plus 2mm from the cushion and in line with thefirst diamond to the right of pocket D. The B ball by the side pocket iscentered and placed so that the pocket side of the ball is at the slate cut.The cue ball is in hand or as the diagram suggests. The objective of thisshot is to shoot the cue ball to ball B on the long rail. The cue ball caromsto the long rail and rebounds around moving B ball. The cue ball thenmakes B ball at the side pocket and gets out of the way. The first struck Bball then goes into the side pocket. Here are some special notes on thisshot. The B ball by the long rail may be adjusted slightly away from the railbut must still be in line with the first diamond. There is no penalty forscratching. Here are a few tips to help you execute this great shot. I placethe cue ball half way between the space of the short rail and the B ball bythe long rail. My cue ball is one and one quarter balls away from the longrail. Based on a 13mm sized tip I use one and three fourths tips of draw onthis shot. The speed of the shot is a moderate stroke. Adjust your speedand amount of draw based on how the cue ball bends off of the long railand arcs over to the side pocket. There are many factors that complicatethis shot. Here are a few of them. Rail height, grade of cloth, newness ofcloth, tightness of cloth, how used the balls are, (new, slightly used, old),size of table, profile of rubber, wet or dry climate. There are more, but myarticle can only be so long! Don’t worry if you can’t make this shot, I’veonly made it less then 50 times in my life, and I have about 200 hours ofpractice in this shot. Best of luck to you on this shot. Here’s wishing everyonea very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

On October 30, 2003, sevenplayers from the NorthwestWomen’s Pool Association(NWPA) made the trip to Atlanta, GAto compete in the WPBA’s RegionalTour Championships. The invitation-only event, held on

November 1-2 at The Pool Roomin Marietta, GA, was a 9-balltournament open to the top sevenplayers as of September 1, 2003from each WPBA-sanctionedregional tour. The winner of RegionalTour Championships receives apaid entry into every WPBA ClassicTour event in 2004 – a $3,500 value. An additional $5,000 was added andsplit for a payout through 16th place.Tournament format was race to 7,alternating breaks and a single raceto 9 in the final. The seven NWPA players originallyinvited were Hsin Huang, MarthaHartsell, Jo Woodward, Kim Gates,Katherine Czarkowski, MonaRemedios and Mary Hopkin. Thelatter three players declined theirspots, which were ultimately filledby Shawn Wolf, Deby Welfringerand Julie Valdez.Kevin Lewis, manager of The PoolRoom (a huge venue with close to30 tough Olhausen, Gandy andBrunswick tables) went way aboveand beyond the duty of tournamenthost by shuttling players from theairport to the hotel and the room –not to mention providing a numberof players with free pool time toprepare for the big event. One of the first players from the

NWPA to arrive at The Pool Roomon Friday before the tournament,Julie Valdez expressed her anxietyabout her first trip to such a high-caliber event. “As the lowest rankedof the seven NWPA playerscompeting this weekend, I’m not

even sure if I feel like I belong in thisfield. I’m just going to hit as manyballs as I can today and play fastand aggressive tomorrow.”Even some of the veteran playersadmitted that while their nerves arein hand for most othertournaments, they still get nervouscompeting in this particular event.Saturday morning we arrived at ThePool Room to warm up. Ga-YoungKim, originally from Korea and astar on the Taiwanese pro tour, wasthe clear favorite. She recently took2nd to Karen Corr at a WPBAClassic Tour stop in New Mexico. And her ultra-fast, super aggressivestyle is enough to intimidate someof the most experienced players. There were many other semi-pro/amateur stars competing as well:Betty Sessions, Ellie Chang, JanetAtwell, current amateur nationalchampion Phoebe Choy, TracieMajors-Hines, Jeannie Seaver, andmany more.At the end of tournament play onSaturday, three NWPA players wereleft standing: Hsin Huang andMartha Hartsell on the A side andJulie Valdez on the B side. After reaching the hill first in hermatch, Julie Valdez ran out and

Follow DrillsBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy

When in doubt, use follow. This is good advice for playingposition because the cue ball reallywants to have follow. If you start it

with draw,t h ebacksp inw i l ld iss ipa teas the cueball travelson theclothto theobject ball, and if it’s along way toball, you’relikely tohave followwhen you

get there. On the other hand, if you start thecue ball with follow, it keep thatfollow. If you start the cue ball rollingsmoothly — with neither slide noroverspin — which you can do byhitting the ball about halfway fromthe center to the top, it will continueto roll smoothly on the cloth. In thissituation, you can control the

distance of the follow simply bycontrolling the speed of theshot. In the diagram is a family ofdrills. In each case, the objectball is a ball or so from the sidecushion, and the cue ball is inhand. The goal is to pocket theobject ball and leave the cueball close to target position. Youcan mark that target with anextra object ball, and the goalcan be to leave the cue ballwithin six inches of the targetball. Two of the setups are shown, object ball positions 1 and 4. Inboth cases, the goal shown isto get to target 1.For each of the five locationsof the object ball, see howmany tries it takes you to reacheach of the four targetpositions. Of course, the trydoesn’t count unless you makethe object ball. Doing all 20situations in fewer than 50 triesis very good. If you get to thatlevel, place a tighter restrictionon how close you leave the cueball to the target ball, for

example within one ball diameter. If the object ball is too close to thecushion to bridge comfortably, move it a little further away. Thegoal of the drill is to learn follow, andyou can learn awkward bridgessome other time.At first you may have some troublein deciding where to put the cue balldown to get the right angle to thetarget. Here is a simple system thatworks best for small cut angles. When in position to shoot the shot, note where on the short cushionyour stick is pointed. That will besome distance D. The system saysthat the cue ball — if played with fullfollow as described above — will hit

Bob Jewett

the rail a distance four times aslarge from that pocket, or 4D. Ifthat’s not the place you want toland, move the cue ball. In theshots diagrammed, the cue stickwill be pointed at D to get to 4D inspite of the fact that the distancesare so different.A common mistake that a lot ofplayers make with this shot is thatthey don’t hit the cue ball highenough for it to have smoothingrolling from the first instant. Youcan test your own ability to cue theball high by using a stripe for thecue ball. Place the stripe so that itis horizontal like a belt around theball. Your tip should be almostinto the white at the top of the ball.Look at the ball after you shoot, and the chalk mark should bebarely all on the stripe. Withperfect chalking andan ideal hit, you may be able to hitpart way into the white, but that’sdefinitely miscue territory. Finally, note that if the cue ballstarts a ways back from the objectball — say three diamonds or so— you don’t have to be so carefulto have good follow from the start. If the cue ball is sliding a little at

the start, the cloth will “rub on” somefollow during the travel to the objectball, and it will arrive with “perfect”follow. Are you ready to practice? Whileyour game can improve by playagainst a lot of players, you canlearn specific shots and techniquesa lot faster if you single them outand spend time just with them. Thismonth, let it be follow shots.

Spokane, WA – On November 15th

– 16th I held a Class “C” 9-balltournament. Players that did notcash in the “B” event were eligibleto compete, and many tookadvantage of that. The tournamentwas an easy sell out and I had toturn players away. With the amountof “B” players that played in this itwas really a second chance “B”tournament. Any player that finishedout of the money in this event cancome back and play the “D”tournament December 6th and 7th.This event’s final found two playersthat had never been in this positionbefore. That is exactly why I dothese events. I like to provideopportunities for players to dosomething they had never donebefore and that includes playing inthe finals of a big tournament. Itseems I am always under fire with

who gets to play and who doesn’tbut at least I give playersopportunities to play in big eventswhether you are a pro or a “D”player. So congratulations to Mike Longieand Jack Belcourt. Mike hadsecured the hammer after defeatingGreg Cantrill 7-6 in the winners final. At that time Jack Belcourt wasmaking his run through the loserbracket. After an early 7-4 loss toMike, Jack went on to defeat MarkNevills 5-4, Deby Welfringer 5-2,Russell Boyd 5-2, Corky Young 5-3, Mark Johns 5-4, Donna Totten 5-3 and Greg Cantrill 5-3 to set up hisrematch. With the 2 race format athand the Canadian came throughand beat the local favorite. Good jobJack you worked hard for it. Thankyou again to all that played and thankyou Nita for all your help.

Spokane, WA – On October 18-19 I held another edition of our class “B”tournament. It was another sold out event and like always there were a fewcomplaints. But nothing like our visit from the unknown pool player. Thefield was tough but no one was overpowering and every player in the eventlost at least once. The player in my mind that had the best run was noteven in the top three. Terry Marshall our 4th place finisher and still recoveringfrom being hit by a car during the summer had a great tournament. Afterlosing his first match Terry went on to win 8 matches in a row. He lost tothe eventual winner but played great with all things considered. I think thatcar cleared his head. Just kidding Terry. Hello, this month I hope to dispel some of themyths thatare beings p r e a da r o u n dabout theNew AramithM a g n e t i cTournamentCue Ball thatwas usedduring theB C A

Nationals early this year in Las Vegas. I havebeen testing this ball over a period of threemonths under normal playing conditions and Ihave found the following information to be true.

1) Since the introduction of this cue ballmany of the inherent problems that werecommon with the Oversized and the MagneticPlugged cue balls, such as, untrue roll, wobble, and drift have been eliminated.

2) The new Aramith TournamentMagnetic cue ball weighs .37 lb verses theAramith Tournament Red circle ball, whichweighs .36 lb.

3) This new cue ball is more prone tosurface marks than other Aramith products..However, these balls can be cleaned usingAramith Phenolic ball cleaner, and a piece ofScotch Bright. The surface marks I haveencountered seem to mainly be friction markscaused when the ball is hit and skids across thecloth. This problem also appears to intensify

when these balls are used on new cloth.4) Chips and cracks in the balls surface,

which were reported during the BCA nationalsseem to have been eliminated. To date, I havehad no reports from customers who havepurchased these balls that these balls are notwearing well.

5) A consistent rumor that I continue tohear is that the new ball is really no different thanthe small sized magnetic cue ball. This statementis completely in correct. Thanks to Chesse theBreaks Editor I have been supplied with a NewBall that was cut in half. This shows that the ballsconstruction is in fact total different than any othermagnetic ball made. This ball has a magneticfilm, which is inlayed around the outer edge ofthe ball and the balls core is solid Phenolic likeany other ball.

6) These balls can be used on almostany coin-operated table where the previous smallmagnetic cue ball was used. To date I have onlyencountered one Valley Table that would notreturn these balls. Tables that use the oversizedcue ball also will not return these balls throughthe ball return.

7) Currently the price of these ballsgreatly fluctuates from location to location. However, if you would like to purchase one ofthese balls I would not pay more $18 for them.Recently Mueller Recreational Products hasbegun to offer this product to the General publicfor $14.95 ea plus $4.95 shipping.

Bagley Benefit TournamentOne of our dearest and bestest friends passed away on October 8, 2003.He had surgery in March and was unable to go back to work and his wifehad surgery September 1 and is only able to work 4 hours a day at thistime. A benefit tournament was held on Saturday, November 22, 2003 atCity Slicker’s and Boss’s Office in Redmond, Oregon. The format wasBCA 8 ball double elimination. The entry fee was $20 with $10 to Betty, hiswidow and $10 going to the prize fund. Both bars opened their tables andalso donated 10 % of the food and drink sold that day.We opened the tournament with a field of 34 players and with donationsfrom other supporters, we gave Betty $390. The 10% from the bars will begiven to her at a later date. A toast was made to Louie by his brother andGary Miller of City Slicker’s before the start of the finals. Raymond Riddletook first place and took home $136. Second was his niece, Karla Bagleywho won $102. Third was his widow, Betty Bagley and she recieved $68.Fourth was Martin Riel.I, Glenda Kessell, can attest to the fact that Louie Bagley, had a kiss andhug for most every one he knew. Pool Tournament Madness

As November grows older my system gearsup to the old days in the late ‘60’s and ‘70’swhen the pool table was a Christmas gift forthe kids. That was a sneaky way to get a pooltable for the family room and pretend it wasfor the little ones. Christmas is no longer thereason for the pool table and they sell yearround, but I still get the feeling that I have somuch to do as Thanksgiving approaches. Inthe old days we would deliver over 500 tablesbetween November and December. Now I

even get weekends off, and I get a chance to do the part of the business Ido enjoy, restoring antiques, build new tables and recovering ones for myregular customers.I just finished restoring a 1906 Brunswick Economy and strangely enougham in the middle of a 1905 Econo table. That year made a big difference. The ’05 had the Pagoda leg, very ornate and stylish, the ’06 had a straightleg. Both were not veneered with high grade oak but were solid Ash. Therails on both tables were quarter sawn oak with Ivory Diamond sights. Both had the original #3 irons. The 1906 had been in a private home for 70years while the 1905 had been in a Fire Department for almost 100 years. The bottoms of the legs had been destroyed, most likely from daily mopping. We rebuilt the bottom of the leg and re-veneered them. Since the framewas solid ash without veneer and the legs had a common flat grain Ash, inlooking through the samples of veneer I fell in love with figured Ash. It’stough enough to bend any veneer over the complex curves of a Pagodaleg but the figure made it curl in every direction. Since tradition says the legveneer should be vertical it was a bitch. We pre-bent the tightest curveswith a ½” hair curling iron and the larger curves with a 1 ½” curling iron, and put them in the vacuum bag. Itis now taking a lot of time to be surethat every surface is tight to the leg.The 1906 had been painted withblack paint, white shellac and finallytangerine. To make things a littlemore complex, it was installed in abasement and the concrete replacedlater. This model of the Economywas a one piece frame that wouldnot go out. Not to be stumped wevery carefully cut the frame in thesame spots that the later knockdown models were cut. Of coursethe reassembly in the Brunswickmanner is a little trick to have it comeout perfectly. Now the frame and legswere going to be very ugly even afterstripping. And this model table was never a K.D. So I found one of themodels that were alike (only different) at the Blue Moon, one of McMenaminsPubs. I took some pics of it and sent them to the owner. He liked the ideaand wanted the table to look authentic but attractive. This was a 1912model very much like the Reno table so it has an inlay pattern done incelluloid and ebony. We needed to use a triple band veneer since it had notbeen veneered before. We found some beautiful quarter sawn oak doorskins made in the USA. We veneered and inlaid the table. Since this modelwas prior to the 1920’s, the finish had to be orange shellac. The color wasperfect with three coats then sanded and rubbed out with pumice coloredvery dark to fill the pores and make them stand out. Two more coats andthen the French polish, a treatment that I learned from Sheraton the Masterof the Polish. His book was written in the 16th century and the terms weretough to follow. The English refer to the pad you use as a rubber, but theFrench call it a tampon. You charge the pad with shellac and add alcoholto cut the surface and a drop of oil of paraffin, so the pad does not stick. Then you rub coat after coat until the finish is like a piece of glass. In the meantime we build sixteen tables for the new poolroom in Portlandcalled “Spare Parts”. It will be opening in December on M.L.K., just a fewblocks from the Rose Court. More on it next month. We also restored anold 4 ½ x 9 Monteray Mission made by Brunswick in the early 1900’s and a5 x 10 pool and billiard combination. This is a really tough table becausethe veneer had been removed and the frame sanded with a small beltsander that gouged the substructure. I did find one little piece of quartersawn oak. I sent pics to Joe Newell and with all the volumes of informationon old tables Joe had never seen the likes of this one, so we will use ourpoetic license. I am writing this with a great case of Pneumonia, so I dohope it makes sense. See you next month. OTB

I first came across this remarkable product being demonstratedat the BCA Trade Expo in Las Vegas this year. I asked DavidHodges to send me a can to try. This is the best table cleaner Ihave ever seen. I took it to the bar that we play leagues out oflocally and cleaned the table. Just like the name says, it was quick, less than a minute and the table was clean. That night we playedfor at least four hours on the table, after we were done we allchecked our hands. No one had blue chalk residue on theirhands!!! It was truly remarkable. It is now two weeks later and Ihave played on that table four or five times in the last two weeksand I still don’t come home with chalk residue! If you own one table for personal use, or enough to fill a tavern, orpool hall this product should be used by you regularly. It will prolongthe life of your table cloth by eliminating the chalk. Your table isclean and dry in a minute. One can will clean 15 9-foot tables. With Quick-Clean the life of your cloth will be extended by 40-50%.

Give it a try - you won’t be disappointedContact your local Billiard Supplier

Thestory continues . . .THE REF EYED HIS WATCH.“CUTTING IT CLOSE,KEATING,” he sneered.“Guy’s out of time,” Reyes roared, rushing up to the ref, “he forfeits thematch!”“Still had about a minute, Tony,” theref snapped, “get your mind backon the game.Ever Ready’s eyes globalized. Hefroze for a moment, then turned andstomped back to the table.Grabbing the cue ball, he glared atthe ref then set himself to break. The crowd quieted.I grinned. The ref had just sharkedmy opponent for me. Walking overto the railbirds on the front row, Inodded to Joe and reached for mycue.Ever Ready flexed his shoulder, drew back his cue and followedthrough with a cannonball-likeexplosion on the rack. Fifteen ballsdarted out of the rack and fell likeflies off the table into the six pockets. One in the lower corner pocket, onein each side pocket, and two in theupper corner pockets.Geez, great job leveling the playingfield, Keating. The crowd responded vociferously.Ever Ready spread his hands andbowed slightly.I sat there without expression.Reyes ran the rack.Five zero. My opponent hadflawlessly run the first five rackswithout missing a shot. After pushing reluctantly off mychair, I slowly racked the balls. Afterwithdrawing the rack, I scanned thecrowds on all four levels looking forElizabeth. My eyes stoppedsuddenly on the third level. I saw aface that looked like her thendisappeared.Re-taking my seat, I sat back andwaited for my chance.“Again?” Joe questioned, leaningover to me from the front row afterreturning from the john.Nod.“Midget only needs six more to winthe match,” he added.

Silence.I shrugged, crossed over to thetable and racked the balls.Thumbing in the balls tightly, I pulledthe rack away went back to my seat.Ever Ready glared at the rack, thenme then the rack. The crowd laughed.Jockeying down to the foot string,he examined the rack, scurriedback and broke the balls. The cueball blasted the rack and spread theballs much like before. Three ballsfell into the pockets. Ever Ready, initially pleased with the break, watched with large eyes as the cueball unexpectedly crawled up andsnookered him between the elevenball and the rail.I sighed heavily. A groan from thedisappointed crowd faded to a

hush.Ever Ready’s only option was toshoot through the eleven hopingsomething would slop in one of thepockets. If he got lucky, I was introuble, if not I had a chance. He grinned. Then putting his palmstogether he looked up to the ceilingand looked as if he was going topray. The crowd laughed. When the laughter fell away, EverReady danced around the table,double-checked the possibilities, then leaned into his stick and drovethe cue ball right through the eleven.Balls flew everywhere. The sixspeared out across the table, wobbled in the gut of the lowercorner pocket, then hung up at its

All ofthese girls played theirhearts out,” said Larsen, who won with a 9-on-the-break in a hill-hill finalsmatch. Choyce and Larsen competed with the nation’s most highly skilledamateur players who were all vying for the U.S. Amateur title. The MensDivision consisted of a 128-players, while the Womens Division featured16 players. As Champions, Choyce and Larsen will return next year todefend their coveted titles. Both Genovese and Condit finished as theRunners-up. Finishing in 3rd Place was Joe Cutler of Bay Shore, N.Y. In4th Place was Phil Stevens of Billerica, Mass. One of the keys to the success of the APA league, administeredby local League Operators, is The Equalizer®, the handicap and scoring system thatmakes it possible for men and women of different playing abilities-especially beginners-to compete on an equal basis, much like they do in golf and bowling. For more information on the U.S. Amateur Championship, visit the officialAPA Web site at poolplayers.com. or call 1-800-3-RACK-EM.

road to victory. As a matter of fact he never had the lead until the last shotof the tournament was completed. Andy Segal, who just recently tooksecond place in the 2003 ESPN Trick Shot Magic tournament to MikeMassey, jumped out to an early lead after rounds 1 and 2. In round 3, Mr.Massey on the second day blew the field apart and took what appeared tobe an overwhelming lead. In WPA/APD Artistic Pool tournaments thereare five shots in each of the eight disciplines and forty shots total, with 2disciplines in each round totaling four rounds. Mike Massey is famous forhis consistency throughout the tournament format and rarely wins any ofthe individual disciplines. It appeared like a victory for Mike until CharlesDarling made a fantastic finish in the last three disciplines; Stroke Shots,Jump Shots and Masse Shots.Stay tuned for the next exciting Artistic Pool Championship Event. In additionto the 2004 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship and the 2004 ESPNTrick Shot Magic Event, there will be the 2004 Artistic Pool Masters Eventat the Hopkin’s Expo in Valley Forge, PA next March. door. The twelve rattled the jaws of the sidepocket and the five hung up in the upper cornerpocket and bounced out. When everything hadstopped rolling, the table was mine.I finally had a shot.“Bout time,” Joe muttered loud enough for me tohear, “now treat this jerk like a felon, Carter.”Silence.A low murmuring buzz filtered through the crowdlike a soft wave coming into a sandy shore. The field was set. There were at least five shotsI could take that were straight in, all lay downshots. It was a matter of me asserting myselfand doing what I was supposed to do.Carefully, methodically, I took my time. First oneshot then another until I ran the table. The crowd applauded lightly. I had won my firstgame.Five one.Ever Ready racked the balls. Eyeing the rackclosely, I said, “re-rack ‘em, Tony.” And pointedto a loose ball.He looked at me strangely as if I had no right toquestion him, then capitulated.“Again,” I barked, after the six ball eased out ofthe rack like a drunken sailor.Arrogantly, he re-racked them again.I went to the head string, broke the rack andpocketed three balls. After making a ball andbreaking out a tight cluster, I made the next shotthen ran the table.Five two.The crowd murmured louder. A sprinkling of themapplauded. Joe Lauterette the loudest.“Gettim’, Doc,” he roared boisterously, “slice upthat midget,” he taunted.Reyes begrudgingly scooted to the foot stringand racked the balls, then marched off to his chairwithout saying anything. I checked the rack . . . itwas tight. Now I felt focused, as though I was transcendinginto a zone, the concentration bottled andnuclear.Moving just off the head rail on the right side, Ieyed the second ball down, took my time and

followed through with a violent, but level, steadystroke. The rack spread out like a sudden rippleof water. The cue ball jumped to the side railand the eight, like a proud peacock retiring forthe day, made a brisk walk out of the rack intothe left side pocket.Five three.A larger, more inviting slice of the crowdapplauded. A few hooted and howled. EverReady threw his stick on the floor and just sat inhis seat. Then, eyeing the referee, he poutinglysauntered over and picked it up.In the next game, my break produced nothing. Isat down and waited. Ever Ready articulated abeautiful six-ball run but on a difficult long shot, hung the last ball up in the corner pocket. Thecrowd groaned. Joe Lauterette clappedobtrusively.I relaxed, took my time, ran out and made theeight.Five four.Had Ever Ready made the seven, he would havehad an easy shot at the eight and gone up sixgames to three. Instead the score was now fivefour.Boss had been right. Funny, I thought, how hereminded me of Charley Sturgis. In game ten, I made two stripes on the break, but froze the cue ball against the nine, clusteredwith the eleven. Ducking the shot, I skinned thenine and laid up the cue ball behind the elevenand the rail. A ring of light applause sounded outaround the arena. Ever Ready had no way out.“Devious, aren’t ya?” Joe hissed, a sparkle inhis eye.Nod. Ever Ready cross banked the cue ball in anattempt to hit the object ball. He missed the entireball, leaving me ball in hand. The story continues ...

sunk the 9-ball only to watch the cue ball trickleinto the side pocket, making the score 6-6. Heropponent won the final rack, stopping Julie at 17th-24th.NWPA’s #2 ranked Martha Hartsell played strongSunday morning but ran into two extremely toughplayers. Jeannie Seaver of Florida knockedMartha to the B side. Martha then faced Ga-YoungKim, who was knocked over to the B side byNWPA tour champion Hsin Huang. Determinedto work her way to the final, Ga-Young Kim endedMartha’s tournament run, forcing her to settle for9th-12th.In the meantime, having beaten friend andlongtime adversary Ga-Young Kim, Hsin Huangcontinued her march through the A side. Hsineventually faced Florida’s Jeannie Seaver in amatch for the point. Seaver, a fearless, aggressive player, handily won the match for thehot seat.Hsin Huang once again faced Ga-Young Kim.Kim came out strong, taking a 5-2 lead in thematch. But Huang’s consistent, composed andintelligent play won out, putting her in the finalagainst Seaver. With the tournament well passed the estimated

time of completion, the race-to-9 final began.Neither Huang nor Seaver were playing their best– both obviously tired and pressed to get to theairport. Seaver came out swinging anddominated the first part of the match, taking thelead to 6-3.However, it didn’t take Huang long to show thecrowd what made her a top contender on theTaiwanese pro tour as well as the winner of fiveout of seven 2003 NWPA events. Never strayingfrom her game, Huang began to creep back intocontention with Seaver. Consistently takingadvantage of opportunities – both for runouts andexceptional safety play.It came down to a hill-hill rack to determine whichplayer would compete with the pros at everyWPBA Classic Tour stop in 2004. And Huangseized the opportunity, running out on Seaver. Not only was Regional Tour Championships atremendous experience for most of us as playersdiscovering where we rate in relation to thenations best. But it was also an exceptionalopportunity for the NWPA to prove that ourwomen play strong. We look forward tocompeting again next year. OTB

John Foley, owner of the Time Out Inn, said thishas been on of the few times he hashad league people come to him andexpress what a fun time they arehaving. The next 12 week sessionbegins December 3, 2003. Theleague plans to run three 12 weeksessions a year with the summeroff for family summertime activities.
