Come join us for a wonderful summer of music and fun in our unique musical community of 140 campers and 60 staff members on beautiful Stearns Pond in Sweden, Maine, about 3.5 hours from Boston.

We offer diverse musical activi-ties and styles—classical, jazz, rock, pop and Broadway, both instrumental and vocal - including private lessons, small and large ensembles, musical theater and many camper and staff concerts.

Welcome to the 2012 BLS Holiday ConcertsDecember is traditionally a month of celebration and the first school-wide performances for our student musicians at Boston Latin School. At this year’s Holiday Concerts we celebrate the achievements of our student musicians and the support of their families.

On Thursday evening the audience will be treated to the work of our vocal and string ensembles. Ms. George, Ms. Shipley, and Mr. Snyder have been working diligently with our students to provide you with a wonderful concert; I hope you enjoy it. I am especially looking forward to the BLS Symphony Orchestra and Concert Choir’s performance of four movements from Utrecht Te Deum by G.F. Handel.

On Friday evening the program will feature our bands and select vocal students. We will be introducing a new concept for the high school band program: due to the increase in band students in grades nine through twelve, we have added another concert band, so there will be a Purple Con-cert Band and a White Concert Band in addition to the Symphonic Band. All of the bands will be playing interesting music for your enjoyment. The Symphonic Band will be performing two selections from Alfred Reed’s Rus-sian Christmas Music that was written to improve Soviet-American relations during World War II and was first performed on December 12, 1944 on a nationally-broadcast NBC radio program.

In closing, I would like to thank all of the faculty, administration, students, alumni/ae and Friends of the Arts who contribute their efforts and resourc-es to make our music program as successful as it is.

BLS art students were chal-lenged to come up with a black and white design for the cover of this years’ Holiday Concerts program. The winning design is the work of Aurelia Paquette.

It is a testament to the amaz-ing and abundant talents of BLS artists that we had a choice between a number of strong entries. The work of the runners up appear below. The bottom left design is the work of ???. The design on the bot-tom right is the work of Jona-than Pinchera.

BLS Concert EtiquetteThe success of a concert depends on the audience as well as the per-formers. The following suggestions are intended to help listeners do their part to ensure that everyone enjoys the music.

Arrival and Departure

BLS concerts begin at 6:30 pm, with doors opening at 6:00 pm. We sug-gest that you arrive early, to allow plenty of time to find seats and settle in before the music starts. If you do arrive late, the ushers will let you into the auditorium during the first convenient pause in the program. Please note that only the main doors (at the rear of the auditorium) should be used to enter and exit.

We encourage you to stay for the entire show if you possibly can. If you do need to leave the auditorium during the concert, please wait for a pause between groups.

During the Performance

•Don’t talk, rustle papers, open candy or gum wrappers, rummage through your belongings, etc.

•Make sure cell phones, pagers, etc. are turned off.

•If you want to take pictures, make sure that your camera’s flash is turned off and that it is set to operate silently.

•Don’t tap, clap, hum, whistle, sing along, etc. (unless, of course, the con-ductor or performers invite you to do so).

•Don’t call out from the audience to friends on stage.

Applause

Please applaud only at the end of a complete musical piece. If a piece is divided into movements or sections, wait until they have all been played before applauding. (One exception: During jazz performances—e.g., the BLS Big Band—it is customary to applaud at the end of a solo.)
