WELCOMEfrom the Producing Artistic Director

Welcome to The Borrowers, a play based on the books by Mary Norton.

The Borrowers is a story about people who are very small. All of us feel small sometimes. And all of us have been told that we can’t do something until we get bigger. Sometimes it’s hard to be small in such a big world. But the Borrowers in our play are really small. They are about five inches tall. The ruler printed on the side of this page shows you how big five inches is. Is your hand bigger than five inches? How about your foot? Imagine what the world would be like if you were five inches tall.

In our play, the Borrowers use a spool of thread as a table. Try thinking about the things in your house and imagine how they would look if you were a Borrower. Imagine trying to use the remote for your TV if it was bigger than you! Imagine climbing LEGOS. Or swinging by a Silly Band.

It’s cool to think about how the world would look if you were a Borrower. Things that we use everyday would suddenly look so different. A toothbrush would be bigger than you. So how would you brush your teeth? What would you use as a bed? Use your great imagination to think about what you would do if you were a Borrower.

Our next Arden Children’s Theatre show is The Flea and the Professor, a musical based on a story written by Hans Christian Andersen, the man who wrote such great stories as The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling. He also wrote a story about a very small girl who was called Thumbelina because she was the size of a thumb. The Flea and the Professor is the very last story Hans Christian Andersen wrote – and we’re turning it into a brand new musical just for you. The hero of The Flea and the Professor is one very small flea. He’s smaller than a Borrower. He’s even smaller than your thumb. But like the Borrower Arrietty, he is curious and courageous and determined to explore this great big world. That’s one of the reasons I like The Borrowers and The Flea and the Professor – they remind us that small people can do very big things. I hope you’ll come back and meet the Flea!

Thanks for coming to The Borrowers. I’d love to hear what you think of our play. You can leave me a message at 215.922.8900 ext 33 or write me at [email protected]. And I’m always looking for new stories, so if you have an idea for a play we can do, let me know.

Page 6: The Borrowers stagebill

Let’s set the play of The Borrowers aside for a minute.

It is a principle of my family that as a parent, my primary responsibility towards my children is to “keep them safe”. That was my explanation for why I had to buckle them into their car seats when they were really little, why they had to hold my hand when we crossed a busy street, and why they couldn’t practice tightrope on a seven-foot-high stonewall.

Simple. No confusion. Just doing my job.

It has gotten more complex as we discuss other things—like, for instance, when and how they should talk to strangers. It’s OK to converse with a wait-person in the local restaurant, OK to talk with Cookie, the sometimes unhinged but basically harmless neighbor, but not OK to talk with someone

when, well, when I’m not there or when…I just might not want them to. When it just doesn’t seem right. As defined by me…don’t ask questions…I don’t know who you shouldn’t talk to, but I’ll know who those people are when I see them. I’m just trying to keep you safe.

I have to admit, the “keep ‘em safe” mantra isn’t wearing so well over time. When, and how, do I grant my children the opportunity to play it a little less safe? There’s a list that has started to grow: when do they get to cross the street by themselves, walk to school, ride bikes to the playground? All part of “just keeping them safe”—in the city.

So Arrietty Clock is a growing, developing 13 year-old. Wants out of her parents’ reach. Wants to feel the wind in her hair. Wants to experience things full-throttle. Wants to be left alone. Average, you might say. Except that she’s a Borrower: inches tall, lives in a garret beneath the floorboards, and just might be on the verge of extinction. Then has to flee her home and become a refugee. Which she really sorta likes. Imagine trying to keep that girl safe!

The beauty of the story of the Borrowers is how real it is. And how fantastical—at the same time. Ripped from the news and a complete fairy tale. Well, no, as Arietty says: fairies don’t exist. But Borrowers do.

For my part, I hear noises all the time in the walls of our house; not animals, I hope, but Borrowers, reminding me that walls just comprise the box that I imagine keeps us all safe from the dangers—and from some of the pleasures!—that the world offers.

A Moon for the Misbegotten

2010/11 SEASONARDEN THEATRE COMPANY

A MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTENBy Eugene O’NeillDirected by Matt PfeifferJanuary 6 – February 27

Two lost souls catch a glimpse of happiness in the moon-light. The newly lit fire within them seems strong enough to withstand a lifetime of disappointment and regret, but will it still be flickering when the cold dawn breaks?

One of America’s master storytellers at the height of his powers, O’Neill creates a mythic tale of old sins and the redemptive power of love. This companion piece to A Long Day’s Journey into Night was O’Neill’s final play.

SUPERIOR DONUTSBy Tracy LettsDirected by Edward SobelMarch 3 – April 3

The neighborhood, the donut shop, and Arthur have all gone to pot. When young Franco Wicks busts in with fresh dough and even fresher dreams, Arthur can no longer pretend he doesn’t care. Tracy Letts, author of the Pulitzer and Tony award winning August: Osage County, turns up the comedic heat on a man and a community grappling with change.

WANAMAKER’S PURSUITA new play by Rogelio MartinezDirected by Terrence J. NolenPart of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, inspired by the Kimmel CenterMarch 31 – May 22

Paris, 1911. A world on the brink of change. Young Nathan Wanamaker arrives in search of stock for the family de-partment store and instead finds Paul Poiret and the first truly fabulous party of the 20th century. Surrounded by Poiret’s extravagances, Stravinsky’s music, and Picasso’s art, Nathan soon finds himself having to make the difficult choice of what he must bring back to Philadelphia and what he must leave behind.

stuffy and uncomfortable. Open seven days a week, there is plenty of time before or after the show to enjoy lunch, dinner, or even just dessert. Come in to Fork:etc, our gourmet café for a quick and satisfying breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Our private dining room and catering services are also available for any party. Taste our bedazzling array of house-made ice creams, consisting of the finest ingredients produced by nature. Our dairy arrives from the rolling hills of Berks County, where pasture-fed cattle graze freely. See, on elegant display, a full spectrum of twenty-seven varieties of soda syrups, which we stir into a cascad-ing stream of sparkling water, sprung from the oldest functioning soda fountain in the United States, circa 1905. Chatter amiably with friends and family under our pressed-tin canopy, or gaze lovingly with a date at our century-old marble counters. Our ambiance is old-fashioned, diplomatic, and awash in lively rag-time & jazz music.

Coming this Spring We wanted to tell you about a really cool play that will be on stage at the Arden this spring. It’s called The Flea and the Professor.

You may have seen plays here before–Peter Pan or A Year with Frog and Toad or If You Give a Mouse a Cookie–where you knew the story before you saw it on stage. The Flea and the Professor is a story by a guy named Hans Christian Anderson, who also wrote The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid. We liked the story of The Flea and the Professor so much that we’ve asked some friends to turn it into a brand new play just for you. You would be one of the first kids EVER to see it. The hero of our play is a Flea. Now, normally you wouldn’t be able to see a Flea on stage. In real life, a Flea is about 1/16 of an inch big and looks like this:

But in our play, we’ve made the Flea big enough for you to see. And our Flea also dances and sings. We don’t think most fleas do that, but fleas are pretty awesome—they can jump REALLY high in the air. They also like to bite people and suck blood. (Ew.) But in this play, the Flea is kind of a nice guy. And he has a best friend called the Professor. When you hear “Professor”, you may think of a mean old teacher like Professor Snape from the Harry Potter books. But this Professor is way different and doesn’t assign homework. He’s pretty cool and likes to go on super exciting adventures with the Flea. They like to fly high in the sky in a hot air balloon, explore a deserted island where creepy Cannibals live, and perform an act in a three-ring circus. Plus they sing a bunch of songs that we think you’ll really like.

We hope that you’ll come and check The Flea and the Professor out when it starts performances in May. Since it’s a play about two friends, you might like watching this play with a friend. Or bring along your mom and dad or brother or sister. And, like all the plays at the Arden, you’ll get to meet the actors after the show. But be careful when shaking hands with that Flea...We hear he bites.
