The BBB recommends donors askthe following questions before giving:

1. Is this a charity I can trust?Look at the appeal carefully; some

charities’ names sound the same. Donot be fooled by names that lookimpressive or that may closely resem-ble the name of a well-known organi-zation. A common scheme used incharity fraud is name-pirating of well-known organizations to gain the trustof donors. If someone says they arewith a certain charity, call the charitydirectly and verify that who youspoke with is really affiliated withthem. Also, visit the BBB’s websitewww.bbb.org/charity to find outwhether the charity meets the 20BBB Standards for Charity Accounta-bility.

2. How will the charity use mydonation?Ask questions about how your dona-tion will be used. Beware of appealsthat bring tears to your eyes but tellyou little about what the charity isdoing about the problem it describesso well. For example, if the charitysays it is helping the homeless, dothey explain how and where this istaking place? (Shelter, food, medical

care, etc.) Watch out for statementssuch as “all proceeds will go to thecharity.” This can mean that only themoney left after expenses, will go tothe charity.

3. Is my donation tax deductible? If you want to take a charitable

deduction for federal income tax pur-poses, make sure the organization istax exempt as a charity under section501(c)(3) of the Internal RevenueCode. To verify a charity’s tax status, access an IRS database by viewingPublication 78 at www.irs.gov.

4. Can the charity actually use what Iam donating? All charities welcome the receipt of

monetary donations, but some alsosolicit in-kind donations such as cloth-ing, food, and toys. If you are planningto donate items to a worthy cause, make sure you know the in-kind contri-butions your charity prefers.

5. Am I feeling pressured to give? Do not succumb to pressure to

give money on the spot, eitherimmediately over the phone viacredit card or by allowing a “run-ner” to pick up a contribution. Also, never donate in cash. ¨
