Inside this issue... “Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.”

To Beta Nu Brothers both far and near, this quote brings forth memories of the solemn journey an old man took going a lone highway in The Bridge Builder poem. It is in the personification of that tale that the Men of Beta Theta Pi have sworn to uphold the span between the family of pledges, actives, and alumni within the broad Beta Nu community.

The current actives at the Beta Nu Chapter are refocusing our eing those who took the path before us, and built the foundation we stand upon. Without your support, our good and great fraternity could not be what it is today. Please take a moment to witness the actions of your legacy, and see what our Chapter is doing to fulfill our obligations as Men of Principle.

Hopefully this issue of the Beta Nus finds Woolgin smiling upon you, and that you forever remember the chasms, both deep and wide, that we all experience in life, and how those both before us, and after us can help us to cross them. Enjoy.

Brothers,

The 2009 academic school year is off to a great start. I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and sorrow at leaving my post as President of the Beta Nu Chapter. I know that I am leaving the Chapter’s legacy in the able hands of Jordan Brewer ’10. He will instill a desire for achievement in the Beta Nu Chapter, an attitude that is needed to make Beta Nu great once again. The 2009 academic year will be devoted to recruitment and establishing sustainable chapter operations. We are pursuing many new avenues to increase growth, including close contact with the national head-quarters, the Alpha Chapter and numerous recruitment consultants. Recruitment is the lifeblood of our Fraternity, and this will be the predominant focus of the Beta Nu Chapter for the immediate future. The chapter has a self-imposed goal of no less than 12 additional men to be initiated by the end of Winter quarter.

The Fall quarter was fully planned with numerous activities for both active brothers and alumni. Most importantly was the Homecoming Weekend Open House followed by the Homecoming Parade and football game. Alumni were welcomed back to the Beta Nu house to mingle with brothers, family and friends for a second year in a row. Many thanks go out to Drew McKenzie, Scott Oyler, the Beta Nu Building Company, and the Beta Diogenes club of Cincinnati for their support in organizing the event and establishing the event as a tradition for all Cincinnati Betas.

In addition to strengthening our resolve to provide for the future through adequate recruitment, the Beta Nu Chapter also feels a need to strengthen its alumni relationships. Because of this, the Beta Nu Chapter would like to invite its alumni to sit with us in Formal Chapter Meetings once a month to contribute their thoughts and wisdom. I and my Brothers feel this will bring a greater perspective to the future direction of our Fraternity.

Please accept this invitation to return to the Beta Nu house to develop the valuable alumni-active member relationship that is the crowning jewel of a well functioning Brotherhood! The first Tuesday of every month is reserved for a Formal Chapter Meeting beginning at 6:00 pm, and we would be delighted to have you there.

Seven fantastic men became the newest brothers of the Beta Nu chapter of Beta Theta Pi on the evening of Friday December 19, 2008. These are the stories of the future leaders at Beta Nu:

Brother Michael Rodemaker ’12 Freshman, Architecture BN -2205-

“I graduate last year from St. Xavier high school here , I was involved in the Big Brothers and other organizations. I was very involved in the Campus Ministry department leading retreats, services, and activities. I was one of six to be chosen as the rector of a Kairos retreat out of a class of 365. I played baseball for three years as a catcher, two of which for the varsity team. I also finished in the top 3% of my class. Outside of school, I work at Kings Island as a supervisor for my company, a job that I've carried for four years thus far. I also enjoy art in all its forms, and my work has been published in numerous Catholic and Jesuit magazines. I'm excited to be among the newly initiated brothers of Beta Theta Pi and look forward to contributing my own unique skills and abilities to the chapter.”

Brother John G. McElwee ‘12Freshman, History BN -2200-

“I am a two-time legacy of the BN chapter of Beta Theta Pi. Both my father, John McElwee BN 1128, and cousin Andy Barton, former president of BN, were Betas at Cincinnati. Before coming to college, I completed four years active duty with The United States Marine Corps (as of June 2008). Currently I am employed at Fastenal in West Chester, OH.”

Brother Kyle Mueller ‘12Freshman, Business BN -2102-

“Born and raised in Cincy, I went to McNicholas High School where I ran cross country and track. I am now enjoying my first year of college as I follow in the footsteps of my father, Law-rence E. Mueller, at Beta. I serve as the intramural chair for the fraternity and my Beta Dad is our president, Jordan Brewer, BN 2163. I’m proud to be at UC and I’m damn proud to be a Beta!”

Brother Ben Combs ‘12Freshman, Finance/Entrepreneurship BN -2199-

“I am a Cincinnati native and recent grad of Elder High School. Within the Carl H. Lindner College of Business I am a member of the Kolodzik Business Scholar’s Program. This past year I joined a new start-up company, Safeway Step, working in business development and national marketing. I look forward to getting involved in recruitment and philanthropy efforts within Beta Nu.”

Brother James “Cody” Moore ‘12Freshman, Computer Engineering Technologies BN -2101-

“I am the first person in my family to go to college right out of high school. I am also the first person in my family to go Greek and there’s no place better to start than Beta! Basketball is where some of my passion lies and I hope to one-day coach at the youth level or higher.”

Brother Ian Donahue ‘11Pre-Junior, Digital Design BN -2203-

“As a student in DAAP, I sought to broaden my activities and friendships outside of the college and thought that joining the Greek Community could be a perfect outlet. Once meeting the brothers at Beta, I realized that these were the guys that I would love spending time with and relaxing with. Once I joined Beta I recognized how much the same men would help me become a better person. I plan on finishing my degree in Digital Design and working over seas. Potential countries include China, London, or Japan. Go Beta or go home!”

Kyle Gallagher ‘13Freshman, Interior Design BN -2204-

“I never thought that fraternity life was for me. Before coming to UC, I swam for my high school and pursued my design interests in my spare time. Now that I’m a brother at Beta, I’ve discov-ered a whole new facet of my life to challenge myself and make memories. I’m excited to be here and look forward to the best memories of my life!”

Bob Aneshansel

The Beta Nu Chapter was pleased to celebrate the graduation of Robert “Bob” Aneshansel ’09 at the end of the Fall quarter.

Bob was a highly valued member of the Beta Nu Chapter and proudly served in many positions throughout his tenure at UC. His calm demeanor, yet solid resolve helped the Beta Nu Chap-ter continue to question its culture and seek to further its iden-tity on campus. There is little doubt in the Beta Nu Chapter’s mind that when Bob’s name is mentioned, the image of a true and devoted Beta is immediately conjured.

Bob completed a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineer-ing. He studied abroad in Japan for six months to study Japa-nese and graduated from the renowned Professional Practice Program after serving Gulfstream, an aircraft-manufacturing division of General Dynamics. Bob accepted an position with Gulfstream in Atlanta, GA earlier this year. He plans to begin his graduate studies in business in the near future.

Bob’s presence will be sorely missed and the Brothers of the Beta Nu Chapter wish him success and fulfillment in his life and career after college.

Good luck Brother!

Greetings Beta Brothers,

I hope that the New Year finds you in good health and spirits. One of The Beta Nu Chapter’s major goals for the 2008-09 academic year is to revitalize its relationship with its alumni brothers. Arguably the most valuable asset that we as an active chapter have, alumni bring a wealth of knowledge and experi-ence to the table that helps guide us in a positive direction. Beta Nu is blessed with one of the largest active alumni bases of any fraternity on campus, and as the new Alumni Relations Chairman, I look forward to working with the rest of the active chapter to strengthen the bond that ties us all together. We will be holding numerous events throughout the year and encourage all alumni (and their families) to attend. Details about upcoming events will be sent out via email and posted on our website.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions, con-cerns, or ideas for future events. Also, don’t forget to visit our revised website (www.ucbeta.org) to find the latest news from the Beta House and to update your official contact information.

With nearly 100 bricks sold and in the ground so far, the path-way leading to the entrance of the Beta House is starting to resemble a “Walk of Fame.” The Beta Nu Brick Campaign was launched as an initiative to raise the funds necessary to improve and maintain the hallowed grounds at 2630 University Court.

If you have not yet purchased your engraved brick, we encourage you to visit the Diogenes Club website (www.cincybetaclub.org) or contact Mark Simon for more information on how you can become part of this historic opportunity. For those who have already contributed, we thank you for your generosity and ask that you consider an additional donation towards the special recognition bricks or purchase a brick for a member of your pledge class or a deceased brother.

This is an exciting time in Beta Nu’s history; the chapter is strengthening every day and brotherhood is at an all-time high. Despite these achievements, competition from fraternities with new, state-of-the-art facilities remains fierce. Your support to keep the Beta House at an elite level is greatly appreciated.

This is what happens when a crafty group of alumni are armed with some spare change, a bit of free time, and a love for beer and UC sports:

The Bearcat Tailgate Crew can be found tailgating many hours before each UC sports home game in the Schiel School parking lot located on the corner of Short Vine and W. Daniels (across the street from Daniels Pub and the Sigma Sigma House). You can also find us at Holy Grail, our official watch party location, during all of the away games.

Everyone is welcome... Donations are appreciated.

Beta Theta Ball Dodgeball Tournament

The Men of Beta Theta Pi held the 1st Annual Beta-Theta Ball Dodgeball Tournament with the women of Kappa Alpha Theta (“Theta”) during Winter quarter of 2008. Theta is known widely as Beta’s “sister sorority” since a Beta played an integral role in the foundation of their sorority. The Men of Beta Nu are pleased to have established such a positive tradition with the local UC chapter of Theta. This tournament was held to benefit, in part, Beta’s own adopted philanthropic organization, Literacy Center West. Literacy Center West focuses on increasing literacy in the Cincinnati area and is spearheaded by one of the Beta Nu Chapter’s own alumnus, Jason Hecker.

The event drew over 20 teams from both the Greek community and the UC student body at large and met its goal of raising over $2,000 for charitable organizations. The Men of Beta Theta Pi will be holding the 2nd Annual Beta-Theta Ball Dodge-ball Tournament on March 7th 2009.

Additional Commitment to our Community

Building upon one of the cornerstones of our institution, the Beta Nu chapter is actively persuing many other routes to becoming involved in our community. We continue to partici-pate in “Adopt-A-Block,” caring for the strip of Straight Street from Clifton to University Court, and also are participating in the Cincinnati Dance Marathon, Relay for Life and many others.

Ed Laage

The Beta flag is no longer flying above 2630 University Court, not until it comes back with Brother Ed Laage '12, BN -2198- from overseas. A member of the United States National Guard, his unit has been called to active duty, deploying this coming this May. When asked about his upcoming journey, Ed, known for his humor, replied "I'm optimistic that I can help start a Beta chapter at Baghdad University; I bet it'll be a blast." We ask that Ed is kept in the thoughts and hearts of everybody as he serves our great nation.

Beta’s intramural football team suffered a heart-breaking loss in the fraternity league semifinals against rival fraternity Sigma Chi. The game was a hard fought, but Beta was edged out by the champi-ons of the league. Pledge Kyle Mueller took over the reigns of QB after starter James Balough tore his ACL in the first-round playoff victory against Delta Chi.

The Ladies of the Kappa Delta sorority have enthusiastically accepted Beta’s bid to partner in the 2009-2010 Homecoming activities together! The Beta Nu Chapter and the Diogenes Club will be putting on festivities at the Chapter house on gameday. Please stay up to date on the events by visiting the Diogenes Club website (www.cincybetaclub.org) as the Fall of 2009 gets closer.

Please visit at www.ucbeta.org for important event updates and for alumni to provide updated contact information. Just go to the website, click the alumni tab, and fill out your information! All feed-back is welcomed as we continue to build our site to help us engage new members, old brothers, and maintain chapter operations.

I am honored to take up the gavel of President of the Beta Nu chapter of Beta Theta Pi.

When I ran for President, I presented my vision for the requisite change and incremental development steps needed to make Beta a model fraternity for both our Greek brothers at UC and other fraternity men nation wide. Now that I have been given the implicit confidence of my brothers to act as President, I can present my strategic plan in this newsletter. It is called Men of Principle. Men of Action. I have outlined three areas of growth that will be measured throughout the year using specific metrics to track progress. The growth areas are: Reach Out to New Beta Men, Be Leaders for Our Pledges, Become Men of Action. During my tenure within the fraternity, I have found that not enough emphasis has been placed on focusing our ideas to become men of action. Using the principles of our Code and our convictions as the BN of BΘΠ, this plan will find the countless men at UC that exemplify the fraternal spirit, introduce them to our chapter, give them the structure to succeed at Beta, and finally become “Men of Action” within their own lives.

In addition to my strategic plan for bringing change to Cincin-nati, the Betas are putting an emphasis on making the most of their college careers and having the ideal college experience. The legacy of the reorganization and a lack of confidence in our own ability to self-govern our Chapter have finally been cast aside. The house has adopted a new policy that allows brothers and their friends to make the Beta house not just a meeting place but the axis of our socializing and brotherhood. Respon-sible drinking is now allowed in the bottom floor of our house and outside on the grounds during Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This policy has already had a visible impact on the weekend activity around the house, giving 2630 University Ct. a revitalized social spirit where brothers and friends come to unwind. This past fall, tailgates, homecoming, and weekend gatherings became the norm at Beta. In addition, the chapter has a Valentine’s Day Date Party and our annual St. Patty’s Day Party scheduled at the house this quarter.

With so many chances to succeed in the upcoming year, all the brothers must be cognizant of the reciprocal threat of failure. As President, I have pledged to give my due diligence in ensuring that the direction of the chapter is one that finds cooperation with the Code of Beta Theta Pi but still promotes our individual nature and traditions of the Beta Nu chapter. As the faithful alumni of our fraternity, I challenge all of you to give me and the other Cincy Betas your feedback and direction. Come back to meeting and tell us a story from your time at Beta. Join us for dinner at 5:30 on Tuesdays and see that we are a chapter that is alive and growing.

I look forward to updating you in the next edition of The Beta Nus on the progress and success we’ve had as a chapter.
