Bali is a special place. There’s no doubt about that. So much so that this small island, amongst many thousands in the Indonesian archipelago, is the focus of tens of thousands of people from all over the world who come to spend their vacations here lapping up the sun and the good times. There are plenty of places to do that around the world of course but there’s something about this island that keeps dragging people back. They have been arriving in droves, but now, with all the new venues opening around town, including some of the most stylish and largest yet to be seen on the island, Bali miraculously, once more, keeps its head just ahead of the line and above water. Bali has a knack for that, somehow it all comes together right at the final moment just when you’d think it was all over. People go on about how bad things are with the traffic and the blah blah but in the end we’ll get there, just like we always do. So, we’ve had a few major parties on the island recently, if you didn’t notice. I suppose a lot of you weren’t aware of it at all, locked inside your luxury villas or up in the hills of Ubud or somewhere, but all those who did make it have been witness to some of the largest and most professionally staged shows yet to hit our shores. A big congratulations goes out to all those responsible. It’s all on again this weekend too with Potato Head’s ‘Strictly Costume Party’ with Aussie band Empire of the Sun playing live and a special costume party. That should be a big one. Then on Saturday KuDeTa’s world famous White Party is back again with a massive international line-up of DJs and the spectacle of everyone dressed in white is nothing less than fabulous. Another Australian band, Frente is on live at WooBar on Sunday afternoon too, so there’s plenty of top-notch international and local entertainment on all over town this weekend and through till the end of the month. You can find out all the information you need to guide you through the next two week’s nightlife and entertainment right here on Bali, right here with The Beat magazine. Check the What’s On and HereNow sections inside for all the details.

To celebrate the holy month of Ramadan, Starbucks Indonesia recently presented the Ramadan Batik Cup inspired by the batik motives from Jambi. All 103 Starbucks stores around Indonesia will serve its beverages in the traditionally printed cups until Idul Fitri which will be celebrated on the 30th and 31st of August. This is the first time ever Starbucks has used batik motives to designs on its cups, and this particular design will only be available in Indonesia and the middle East, especially for Ramadan. Two new items have also been added to the pastry case menu, the Espresso Nut Whoopie Pie and Date Muffin can be enjoyed while you sip your caffeinated beverage to break your fast, if practicing.

BIS Celebrates Its 25th AnniversaryOn September 3, 2011, Bali International School (BIS) will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. This will mark a quarter of a century in which BIS has provided international students in Bali with a world-class education, preparing them to thrive in a challenging world. On the 2nd of September, BIS will host an official celebration assembly to unveil a 25th Anniversary plaque which will be similar to the plaque

that was unveiled at BIS’s opening in 1986 by then governor Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus. A time capsule has also been prepared, containing various BIS related items, including school yearbooks and other items to represent the community, to be buried in the ground scheduled to be opened in 2026 when BIS celebrates 40 years. (I wonder if a beat magazine will be included? Ed) A BIS Family Festival will be held on the 4th of September on its football field for an afternoon of food, fun, and live-music.

Building of GWK Statue Will Continue

The mega-project to build the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) statue, which has been delayed for the past 12 years, will soon continue. According to a new plan, the construction of the tallest statue in the world will begin again in early September. Three investors are apparently ready to support the continuation of the project. Targeted for completion within the next three years, as revealed during an

August 5th hearing attended by the legislative council of Badung (DPRD) and parties involved in the GWK project. To complete the GWK statue, which has a proposed height of 75 meters, an investment of Rp 750 million is needed. The statue is currently estimated to be 85% complete. The completion of the statue will also see the entire construction of the entire GWK complex, which is planned to contain galleries, museum, tourism information centre, and shops.

HAVE BEENLuke Steele and Nick Littlemore met in 2000 after being introduced by Steele’s A&R, Simon Moor. At the time, both were signed to EMI and had been working on independent projects. The two instantly became friends and immediately decided to begin a collaborative music project together. Their first release was “Tell the Girls That I’m Not Hangin’ Out,” which appeared on The Sleepy Jackson’s 2003 debut album, ‘Lovers.’ With Steele living in Perth at the time and Littlemore in Sydney, the pair independently worked on the project and organized meetings in Sydney, where they decided on the duo’s musical direction and style. Eventually the pair entered the studio to record the final material, all of which was entirely self-produced. ‘Walking on a Dream’ was released in 2008, debuting at #8 on the ARIA charts and eventually moving up to #6. Their first single got airtime on many Australian radio stations, reaching #10 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. The second single, ‘We Are the People,’ peaked at #24 and was used in an American advertising campaign for Vizio televisions. Empire of the Sun was nominated for six ARIA awards in 2009, going home with four, for Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Group, and Best Pop Release.

ARE NOWAfter a hiatus, the band announced in late 2010 that they were currently working on a new album and, as of June this year, have been busy in the studio. No information has yet been given as to when the album will be revealed, and many are waiting anxiously for the news. If you are one of EOS’ many fans, you’ll be ecstatic to hear that they’ll be performing at Potato Head on the 19th of August for a special costume party. So dress in your most elaborate attire and who knows, they might even slip in a new single.

HAS BEENImmersed in the sounds of dance music during her teen years, part Indonesian and part Dutch Yasmin became fascinated with the world behind the DJ tables. Learning the ropes from a close friend who happened to be one of the top DJs in Holland, DJ Daze, she found mixing overwhelming at first, but found her footing spinning hip hop and RnB tunes. Continuing to improve her musical skills, she found her true calling in house music, and went on to craft her own unique sound. By combining the groovy basslines of house with elements of progressive and touches of techno and Latin rhythms, she has concocted a formula that is guaranteed to fill any dancefloor she rocks. The signature Yasmin sound has spread across the globe, giving her the opportunity to play in places like Istanbul, London, Hong Kong, Italy, Jakarta, and Bali.

IS NOWYasmin has been busy producing her own tracks, with her first tunes, ‘Ravi’ and ‘Rotation,’ released under the Sneakerz Muzik label, making her the first female to be signed to the label. She’s a regular on the Jakarta club scene, and has played most venues there and around the world. She’ll be performing for the first time at SOS, treating us to her take on things alongside Damon Emanuel Promotions’ Voyeur show.

HAVE BEENSpen began his career at the age of 13, producing mix shows for WEBB AM in Baltimore and founding one of the area’s first hip hop production groups, the Numarx. In 1986 they wrote and recorded a track called “Girl You Know It’s True”, which was later covered and made famous by Milli Vanilli. Spen’s production talents lead him to Basement Boys Records in 1989, where he began producing a long string of consistent commercial and dancefloor successes, becoming an in-demand remixer in the process. Having reached his full potential with Basement Boys, Spen stepped out on his own and partnered with Gary Deane to form the Code Red Record label in January 2004 and hasn’t stopped moving since. With a career span of more than 20 years and a mind-blowing catalogue of studio and production work, Spen is now one of the most sought-after DJs in the world.

As part of Basement Boys with DJ Spen, Karizma has produced a number of respected house tracks. He has carved out a hugely successful solo career, starting with the release of “Feel the Power” in 1995, and makes music that is hooky and immediate enough to appeal to a commercial audience while keeping an underground attitude. Over the years he has released records on various labels, recently finding a home with R2 Records (home to Floating Points, Osunlade, and Alton Miller, to name a few). As a DJ, he blends diverse genres of music flawlessly, using 3 CDJs as his instruments and creating live beats on the spot. He is known as the CDJ master, and is a legend in his own right.

ARE NOWKu De Ta invites everyone to its ‘Hello Sailor White Party’ for one of the biggest naval balls this side of the Pacific. Get ready for an evening of high sea hijinks at this anchors and portholes-themed party. DJ Spen and Karizma will pull off a friendly 5-deck battle that is sure to be unreal. So wear your navy whites and get ready to party ‘til late at one of Bali’s most famous parties.

HAVE BEENAustralian alternative rock group Frente! was formed back in ‘91, featuring the original lineup of singer Angie Hart, founder and guitarist Simon Austin, bassist Tim O’Connor, and drummer Mark Picton. Bursting onto the Australian music charts with the singles ‘Ordinary Angels’ and ‘Accidentally Kelly Street’ in ’92, their debut album ‘Marvin the Album,’ reached a million sales worldwide. The band also gained recognition overseas in 1994 with their biggest success, an acoustic cover of New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ which reached #76 in the uK and #10 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart in the uS. Their song ‘Ordinary Angels’ was featured in the Melrose Place original soundtrack, while their cover version of ‘Open up Your Heart (And Let the Sunshine In)’ was one of the tracks on the compilation album Saturday Morning. They have toured extensively, playing with the likes of Alanis Morissette, the Beautiful South, and Everything But The Girl, and collected an Aria Award in 1993 for Breakthrough Single and Album. The group eventually broke up in ’96, with Angie and Simon only coming together once in a while for the occasional reunion.

ARE NOWHaving spent many years working in the uS (Angie in Los Angeles, Simon in New York) they both recently relocated to their hometown of Melbourne. Angie has released two solo albums, while Simon continues to work in audio production. Following their highly acclaimed performance at this year’s Java Rockin’Land event, Angie and Simon will get together once again for a special sunset performance at WooBar. Don’t miss this special reunion performance.

HAVE BEENBorn and raised in Jakarta, Ardi Pite’s interest in becoming a professional DJ started in the uS, during a residency in San Francisco back in ‘94, and continued during his time as a student in London, where he immersed himself in the uK dance scene. In 1998, Ardi returned to Jakarta and quickly rose to the top, spinning at all the hottest clubs and shows in the capital city. He was voted ‘Best DJ of the Year’ at the 2004 Paranoia Awards and ‘Best Trance DJ of The Year’ at the 2005 RAVELEX Awards.

Restu Triandy, better known as Andi, is the frontman for popular Rock Band /rif. Getting into music from an early age, Andi started competing in song competitions when he was just knee high, improving his vocal abilities as he developed and grew. He formed his first band, Badai Band, with close compadre Jikun in 1992. The group then changed members and in 1995 changed their name to Rhythm In Freedom, before abbreviating it to /rif. To date, Andi, Jikun and co. have released a total of seven albums.

ARE NOWAfter many successful collaborative shows, Boshe is set to feature another amazing genre-bending performance, mashing up dance music, shredding guitar riffs, and thrashing rock vocals. Ardi Pite will be behind the decks with Jikun on guitar and Andi on vocals, for a never-before-seen combination of cutting-edge talent.

Opening “Danzatoria” By Pascale Doumeng

WarisanThursday4 August

Self-taught artist Pascale Doumeng exhibited her works of art for the first time in Bali in an art exhibition entitled

‘Danzatoria’ at Warisan. Her Mediterranean-inspired works featured abstract images in bright and bold colors. Many of the Pascale pieces shown have never before been presented to the public, making this a very rare opportunity for the delighted punters looking for some very cool art.

Touched for the Very First Time

After kicking things off with their killer lineup of resident performers, Boshe presented a double whammy for the weekend crowd. At the

stroke of midnight, the party started really jumping, with the pop-rock duo of The Virgin lighting up the stage with songs that got an enthusiastic reception. After an hour of song from these talented ladies, the mini-concert changed into a late night rave-up, with DJ Riri Mestica manning the decks

and pumping out his crowd-crushin’ tunes.

Rooftop Party

Bistro Batu KaliSaturday6 August

SOS Supper ClubSaturday6 August

Bistro Batu Kali’s open rooftop area was transformed into a clubbing destination for special parties recently. As midnight

comes around, party goers arrive and head up to the third floor where they are free to dance their heart’s content. Special guest DJ Bandung’s Adit was on the decks spinning out the coolest of beats for the crowd who were enjoying the downtown view and uptop vibe. Rooftops are definitely all the rage.

The Return of the Brothers Stafford

Australian bros and DJ duo, Chris and Matt Stafford returned to Seminyak, banging out

a fun-time house set over at SOS. The dancefloor was jam-packed from the start, with fans ready to get down, but not before a breathtaking Voyeur show had jaws dropping and a whole lotta hot and bothered going on. The Staffords took it from there, keeping things spicy with rumbling beats and bass vibrations.

Dressing Down for High Season

When people are deciding to take it easy and get a good night’s sleep on a Saturday night in August, you got to know it’s Bikini

Day Party weekend. Early Sunday afternoon, the well-slept and fresh-faced boys and girls lined up with the crew still pushing it from the night before for a killer party at KuDeTa with uK band Crazy P, their DJs Ron Basejam and Hot Toddy, the bongo-jamming Aldo, and KDT’s own deck masters. A Brazilian carnival theme was excuse enough for everyone to get loose under the sweltering sun and with it being a bikini party, there was plenty of eye candy to boot.

Eight’s All Round

88 Club celebrated its first anniversary in the luckiest way possible: with the number eight. On the 8th day of the 8th month of the year,

the party featured 8 hours of free-flow drinks, 8 party icons, and 8 models. The 8 DJs taking their turns on the decks that night were Adit Putra, Kent Kryptonite, Loco D, Lanang Hugo, Wilson, Dion, Nasta, Anton Riswana, and Ho Good. The ceremonial blowing of the candles took place after midnight, followed by a special performance by duo Maialicious. This massive blow-out was packed to the rafters from the jump and well into the grand finale, which had Delizious Devina spinning until the lights went on.

anniversary bash that had crowds filling every corner of the venue. represented by Ed Banger records who turned the scene into a raging party. The trio included Busy P, DJ Mehdi, and Breakbot, belting out beats in a musical gumbo of house, hip hop, and boogie. Great music, good venue production, and a big, beautiful crowd made for some happy times, with plenty of punters obliged to take a dip in the pool by night’s end.

Cocoon Goes Feral

Wild at Cocoon saw the beachside venue converted to a tropical jungle. An assortment

of entertainment was on offer to get guests in the mood, involving loin-cloth-wearing stilt walkers, African drummers, a freaky aerial show by animal-costumed acrobats, and an exhilarating fire show. Bamboo-caged dancers added to the deep primal spirit of the night, gyrating to the soul and hip-hop influenced house of Brooklyn’s DJ V.

Ku De Ta went all out for their “turning Japanese” themed anniversary party

on Saturday, and the results were as visually impressive as always. Kudos goes to KuDeTa for embracing both traditional and contemporary Japanese themes for the party. Along with sumo wrestlers, samurais, and kimonos were recent Japanese exports like Hello Kitty, school girls, and cosplay, turning the club into a virtual theme park of dance music fun. On the audio front, Grammy-nominated DJ Todd Terry lit up the dance floor, with Donni One and DJ Aldo also providing fuel for a very pumped up crowd. Supercozi hit the turn tables like a ninja handles ninja stars, with absolute Japanese precision and dedication.

MOVE AND GROOVE, BRING IT ON, BANG A GONG, lOOKING GOOD. IT’S THE HAPPENING BEAT OF J.P.’S WARUNG, STEP INSIDE AND SEE WHAT’S GOIN’ ON.

S.B. Begin from the beginning. Show time!M. I’m from Frankfurt, Germany, age forty.T. Really? (laughs) I didn’t know. I’m from Munich.

S.B. How did you two meet?T. We met in Frankfort about fifteen years ago at a party.

S.B. It took that long to end up here in Bali as partners in J.P.’s? (laughs)T. Well, it was some years ago. I had just moved from Jakarta, where I had been for ten years. I moved to Bali four years ago, during that time Matthias was working in Singapore, and through the years we always kept in contact with each other.

Mathias Raeke and toM hufnagel

S.B. Mathias, how long were you in Singapore and what were you doing there?M. Almost two years, working for a hotel company.

S.B. Now, how did the meeting of the minds come together for J.P.’s?T. Mathias was coming here with the idea of being a wedding organizer, events and such.M. That was before, and then we came across J.P.’s, I had quit my job in Singapore and didn’t want to go back to Germany. Tom said come here and see what we could do, so in the process of organizing wedding events we found J.P.’s.

S.B. What took you to Singapore?M. I studied hotel business for two years.

Page 89: The Beat Bali 292

S.B. The hospitality business. So this line of work has always been in your veins? And you, Mr. Hufnagel? Ha, what a mouthful. (laughs)T. If you translate my name, it’s like a horseshoe and nail. Four hundred years ago my family were blacksmiths. My schooling was a combination of management and psychology and then I moved into publishing in Jakarta, with magazines, and worked as an events manager.

S.B. So this project, J.P.’s, was and is a perfect marriage for the both of you, so to speak? T. Yes, but my heart still beats for publishing. S.B. Sounds like a passion.T. Yes, I also keep contact with the media. I like it, but as for future plans with that, well, it depends.

S.B. How did J.P.’s actually come about?T. Very easy. There was a blackboard here with “for sale” written on it. (laughs)M. I found it in the newspaper and came and checked it out.

S.B. Once underway, what brought you to the process of revamping the whole place?T. What was already happening worked very well and we kept the idea of good food, great music and atmosphere, but it was impossible to grow anymore. We signed a contract for the store opposite J.P.’s, then the next week we discovered it was actually possible to break down the wall here. We didn’t even know it was connected. So, we broke the wall.

S.B. Sounds very German, the wall. (laughs) It’s the concept I’m interested in, though, which is for sure revolutionary for this street.M. The description would be, there’s J.P.’s Bar and Restaurant and then there’s the bar and lounge, terrace, and J.P.’s Maria Magdalena, a nightclub, bar, and billiard lounge, a place where you can spend the whole day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, live music, entertainment, dance, 8am until 5am. We close for three hours to clean up. We have a good team to make it all work, especially in the kitchens.

S.B. When you say especially in the kitchens, in what way?T. They are extremely creative. For example, Acorn from Java, black soup, he’s mainly Indonesian but started his career twenty years ago in Sweden, he’s an entertainer with food, extremely passionate. He’s an artist in his field. Check the videos that he does on Facebook, he juggles with the food and he’s collaborating with sports figures, movie stars, he’s great. Jean Marc, also, is doing Maria Magdalena with French flair.

S.B. You also have the store opening across the street from J.P.’s which you mentioned earlier. What’s that about?T. I don’t know how to describe it, the branding of I magazine. It’s a joint project.

S.B. Describe what you’re doing here musically?M. At the moment we have a constant program with a variety of music so people can know what they can find at J.P.’s. We’re always open to special events, always holding gigs with artists from Jakarta and Australia, and are on the look out for new musicians as well.T. What we have here with the stage set-up is big enough to bring in international artists. We’ve tried this now two or three times and it’s gone well.

S.B. What do you see in the event forum?T. We want to keep the variety broad, involving the best talent. Soon we hope to have comedy shows here and our own classical concerts, burlesque shows, and cabaret shows.

S.B. So you’re making a nightclub and entertainment venue, which no one to my knowledge seems to be doing?M. Not like this, no. There are a lot of ideas now, but it’s too early to talk about it, the capacity here is five hundred persons, so the possibility, we have to see, talk to other places to bring in name talent. We’re always in discussions, we just have to find the right system.

S.B. Do you see a change happening here on Dhyana Pura?T. We have partners here on the street who want to keep going up-scale. We are the first ones who are going a step higher. We have Gado Gado, SOS at the Ananatara and in-between stores and such which are catching up to Jl Petettinget. Everybody has to adjust to the new way of tourism here. Hotels are coming up here on the street, so lots of money is coming. M. There’s a lot of good fashion boutiques here and a good variety of restaurants, the gay bars bring flair, but that also has to be organized. So yes, the future looks very bright for Jalan Dhyana Pura.

S.B. Philosophies, gentlemen?M. Be human and be open.

S.B. Sounds like if it feels good, do it. (laughs)T. Take it easy.

S.B. Take it easy, and go with the flow, Joe, sounds good to me.

Sundays have always been big breakfast days for me, because it’s the only time of the week I can let loose my inner chef and cook

to my heart’s content. At times, my plan to wake up early and prepare my mini-feast of the week gets bypassed, thanks to heavy hangovers from the night before. This particular Sunday saw me absent from my kitchen duties once again, so instead of letting myself go hungry, I decided to treat myself to brunch. Hearing only good things about Starfish Bloo’s buffet, I figured I had to try it, and so made a last-minute reservation and went on my way. Sunday brunch is available from 11.30am to 3pm, which gave me plenty of time to fill up before dinner. Those who just want to enjoy delicious food and non-alcoholic drinks can feast the lot for 425k, unlimited wines and San Miguel beer can

be had for 575k, or the whole package (food and drinks of all sorts) can be enjoyed for 1 million.

Making a reservation is a good idea, as the restaurant is known to always be jam-packed for Sunday brunch and on this occasion was no different. This only fueled my curiosity about the dishes that make this particular brunch so desired. As I was being led to my table, I was captivated by the seaside décor and features, particularly the oversized booths, evoking gigantic lobster traps, and the dominantly bluish green color scheme. Settling into the alfresco table prepared for me, I found the breathtaking ocean view enough to stop me in my tracks. I wanted to just enjoy the natural spectacle, but the will of my belly was mightier, and so led by the rumbles, I left my table to scour

the massive smorgasbord of Pan-Asian delights on from Chef Jack Yoss.

The main buffet table, which was decorated with tanks of undulating kelp and tiny fish, held platters with a selection of fresh seafood on one side, ranging from half-shell oysters, shrimp, and an assortment of sashimi and sushi, while the other held a salad bar, serving up an array of fresh salads with a vast variety of dressings to choose from. Not far on was the hot section of the buffet, with an egg bar, where you could order eggs to your liking as well as sausages and hash browns, for a more “breakfast” take on brunch. Next to that, the Indonesian part of the buffet featured an assortment of traditional dishes, including seafood curries and other delights, while the area right next to it served a variety of dim sum in traditional Chinese bamboo steam baskets. Those with a more carnivorous side will love the roast station, where you can enjoy roasted meats and mash potatoes doused in thick delicious gravy. New to the buffet selection was the Mexican station, which served up tasty mini-tacos and cheese covered nachos. A seating at the brunch entitles you to a plethora of beverages, which are continually refilled as you enjoy your brunch.

Brunch at Starfish Bloo is more than just a great way to tackle the gap between breakfast and

lunch in one go; it offers a culinary adventure in an open-aired setting that is great for friendly and family get-togethers on Sunday. Just remember to book in advance! [Rinaldi]

Oakley has just unleashed six new shades from its Jupiter Camo Collection. Old-schoolers will remember that the company’s first dual-lens glasses were called the Frogskins and that, for some time, Oakley had a frog mascot named ‘Jupiter.’ Jupiter’s green and yellow skin and red eye colour are commemorated by this latest collection, including the classic Frogskins, extreme Jawbones, Shaun White’s favorite, the Holbrooks, the

futuristic Fuel Cells, and the original Dispatches. Even the big O’s current prescription eyewear

frames are available in the jumping throwback colours. To check out the new collection, visit www.oakleyindonesia.com or visit any Oakley outlet.

69 Slam recently opened their 8th concept store in Bali, celebrating the occasion by filling the shop full of friends, flowing drinks, and the latest collection of swimwear and underwear. Of course, it wouldn’t have been a 69SlAM opening without some bizarre entertainers to put on a show. The summer ‘11 swimwear and underwear collection, with fun 69SlAM prints, got some great feedback; many lines were out of stock by the end of the night. In designing the store, 69SlAM wanted to spice things up a bit, so they called upon the team from The lightbox Gallery to create one of a kind artwork which showcases the 69SlAM Play loud spirit. The opening night saw members of the 69SlAM European snowboarding team popping by to check out the new store. Based in the center of the Kuta hustle and bustle, the shop is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

From English patriotism and angst to sing-a-long drunken glory, Frank Turner keeps raising his

banner higher. The musician of former Million Dead fame’s fourth solo album sees his traditional punk-folk sound becoming deeper and more mature, as witnessed on tracks such as “Glory Hallelujah” and ‘English Curse.” The ballad-style tales presented in “One Foot After the Other,” “Rivers,” and “Wessex Boy” are original and memorable, getting stuck in your head for some time after each listen.

Scottish singer/songwriter King Creosote (Kenny Anderson) unexpectedly collaborates

with renowned electronic producer Jon Hopkins, bringing a new sound to the world. Anderson’s calm emotional drive and deep melodies are paired with soulful loops and almost-subliminal effects, stimulating listeners’ ears and minds. Stand-out tracks like “Bubble” and “Running On Fumes” offer ambient-acoustic soundscapes that are ideal for those contemplative sleepless nights.

REDBased on the cult D.C. Comics graphic novel and starring an A-list cast of veteran actors, ‘Red’ is an explosive must-watch action-comedy. When four of the CIA’s best agents are framed for assassination, they must use all of their collective skills to stay alive. Helen Mirren with a gun? What could be better?

MACHETEDanny Trejo brings a new breed of antihero to the big screen in this hyper-violent Mexican stand-off, telling the tale of a former Federale, Machete, who is duped into assassinating a senator for cash, only to find that he’s been set up. Watch how his ragtag band of weapon wielders come together for a “bloody” good time.

SuCKER PuNCHAn epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from a darker reality. locked away against her will, Babydoll is determined to fight for freedom, urging four other young girls to band together and try to escape their terrible fate. Hot chicks and great action scenes make this a must-see for the guys!

THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHuLHuA horror comedy about a regular Joe who gets told that he’s the last living descendent of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, whose fictional fish-like humanoids, the evil Cthulhu, are in fact real. With the help of his buddies, Charlie, an obsessive comic book fan, and Paul, a self-proclaimed lovecraft authority, he sets out to save humanity.

THE A-TEAMThe classic TV series gets adapted for the big screen, featuring more explosions than the original show ever did. The ‘Nam veteran storyline takes a back seat, with the team now made up of Iraqi war veterans (to be more current) who are set to clear their names for a crime they didn’t commit. The movie plays like a back-story of the team’s rise to military fame and infamy. Not very reminiscent of the original but a solid action flick nevertheless.

VIDEOGAMES BASED ON BOX OFFICE SMASHES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN AS MAJOR FAILS IN THE GAMING WORLD, NEVER TRuLY LIVING uP TO THE SOuRCE MATERIAL. THE SAME CAN BE SAID FOR MOVIES BASED ON GAMES, BuT WE WON’T EVEN GO THERE. HERE ARE SOME GAMES THAT ARE ROuGHLY BASED ON MOVIE FRANCHISES BuT ARE FAR BEYOND PREVIOuS RuSHED MOVIE-TO-GAME PORTS.

Not quite MoviesGame On!

007: Blood Stone Originally meant to be the next new Bond movie, somehow this title got transformed into pixilated gaming mayhem. Daniel Craig lends his mug, virtually reprising his role as her majesty’s secret service agent 007. Following up on the story of the Quantum of Solace movie, Bond is once again assigned to save the world while killing a few terrorists along the way, and of course flirting with the ladies. The game is filled with big explosions, frantic fire fights, exotic destinations, and insane chase scenes. Basically, everything you’d expect from a Bond flick, only this time it’s interactive.

Star WarS: ForCed UnleaSed 2The long story gap between Star Wars episode III and episode IV have opened the way for many filler episodes in the franchise. One such story is that of Darth Vader secretly training an apprentice codenamed Starkiller. While the prequel saw the demise of this hero, here we play as a cloned version of him, reprogrammed by Vader to once again do his bidding. Past memories haunt the clone and he escapes to aid the one he loves. More of an intergalactic romance than a hack n’ slash in my opinion, but the force powers are still cool!

tranSFormerS: War For CyBertronThis game isn’t based on Michael Bay’s 2007 blockbuster, instead bringing back the essence of the Transformers animated series of the 80s. The setting is the Transformers’ home planet of Cyberton, long before they land on earth to continue their ongoing battle. Civil war hell breaks loose, with the Decepticons moving toward victory. Players get to play either as a Decepticon or Autobot, each with their own different storyline. Whichever side you chose, the fun of transforming between vehicle and robot is pure nostalgic bliss.

In an amazing display of strategic prowess, Bali’s lee Wilson used his years of local knowledge to barrel his way to victory in the Rip Curl

Cup on Monday at the Balinese Pipeline. In a gripping 45-minute final, Wilson pulled ahead of a field of the world’s top tube-riding specialists, including runner up and previous Rip Curl Cup winner Made “Bol” Adi Putra, Australia’s Anthony Walsh, and first time finalist Mustofa Jeksen. Receiving his winner’s check for Rp 50 million (almost US$6,000) on the podium as the sun was setting over a still pumping Indian Ocean, Wilson said, “This is the best win I have ever had, hands down. I truthfully didn’t give myself much of a chance to win today. It’s a left, and there were some of the best tube-riders in the world out there, guys I have seen take down WCT surfers, so I was just out there thinking that I would relax and just go for some big barrels and have fun.” It worked to perfection. With three Indonesian surfers (two and a half to be precise, as Wilson is half Australian and half Indonesian) and one Australian out in epic 4-6 foot mid-tide Padang-Padang, Wilson posted first a 9.5 point barrel ride, and then added 6.5 more points to end up with a total of 16.00 points out of a possible 20, besting runner-up Made “Bol” Adi Putra. Adi Putra, who arguably owns Padang-Padang, scored a perfect 10-point wave in semifinal one as well as the highest heat score, 18.85. The 45-minute grand final was the culmination of a day filled with the kind of drama that couldn’t possibly have been scripted. Sunrise saw solid 6-foot

sets blasting into the razor sharp Padang-Padang reef, prompting the long-awaited “on” call just into the fourth week of the five-week waiting period. Heat one was extremely slow, with Ireland’s Fergal Smith only managing one short takeoff, before the ocean awakened again and started pumping. A bizarre situation in round three had Makua Rothman paddling up the inside and dropping in from behind on Mega Semadhi, with both of them slotting into the barrel together before it spit them out into the channel. Rothman got the penalty and Mega advanced, but it was nonetheless an amazing display. Then, just after round one was completed, the clouds that had gathered began to drop drizzle, with onshore winds making a mess of the line up. A break was called to see what the weather would do next. After about an hour, the sun began to burn out the clouds and the Indian Ocean wave machine began to once again pump out some world-famous Padang-Padang barrels, which continued non-stop until long after the sun went down. In addition to having his name inscribed on the Rip Curl Cup Trophy and receiving Rp 50 million in cash, lee Wilson received a brand new Kawasaki 150 D-Tracker motorcycle from Kawasaki Indonesia for being the top local surfer in the cup. After receiving the award, Wilson said “I just bought a new Kawasaki a few months ago, so now I have two! I’m going to give my old one to Bol, because he really deserves something for surfing so good today.”

Since 2002, Kompas has invited artists to create illustrations for its weekly Sunday short story section. Artists were given the freedom

to use different media, techniques, or whatever forms they desired to come up with works of art that translated what the week’s story was about. The unique masterpieces that resulted appealed so much to the team at Kompas and the curator of Bentara Budaya that they decided to exhibit them. Since 2003, Bentara Budaya has made this exhibition an annual event, showcasing the works of many different artists, including those from years gone by. This year, a total of 50 works by 50 artists will be featured.

ConCepT Caricature sketching is considered a unique form in itself, recreating an image by exaggerating an object’s essence while maintaining its recognizable characteristics. Caricature is the chosen art form of Eko Bayu Saputra, who at first chose the method in sketching illustrations for short stories that he had written. Seeing that his caricatures brought out a happier side in those who saw them, Bayu decided to refine his artistic side and improve his skills. By putting his whole heart and mind into creating simple masterpieces, he thrives on reimagining objects, representing their humorous side, and bringing smiles to his audience’s faces.

exHiBiTion Delving into the world of art since he was in elementary school, Bayu has won several awards for his creations. Making his illustrating debut for one of Bali’s biggest newspapers, Bali Post, several years ago, he continues to create images on a weekly basis for its Sunday short story section. His whimsical art pieces have also found their way onto the internet at www.balilutcyu.com, which depicts the funny side of life in Bali. Bayu is currently busy working on illustrations for a short story anthology by Bali’s most renowned writers, which will be published by Sastra Welang Publishing, as well as preparing for his first ever solo exhibition in 2012.

The Beat Jakarta will be holding the Sunset BBQ and Chill on Sunday September 11 right in the center of Epicentrum Mall at the same venue as the last occasion, Liquid Exchange. With special guest chef, Phil Mimbimi in charge of the grill, serving up a delicious smorgasbord of meats and salads, and eating to your heart’s content, all for 130k while grooving to the sounds of DJ Vely and residents. It’s the perfect afternoon of food, drink and chat with friends after the Idul Fitri holidays and celebrating the beginning of another year. Starts at 3pm.
