The sewer lid is partly open, and that puts the lives of our children at great risk,” she said. Another local resident Selaelo Kubuzi also expressed concern over this situation, indicating that the safety of their children is not guaranteed as long as the issue remains unsolved. Kubuzi said that the municipality had previously attended to the matter, but added that the problems are recurrent even after the situation was attended to. “This situation affects the whole neighbourhood. As parents and residents of Modimolle, we feel that it is our responsibility to report the matter as it affects all of us. We are hoping that the municipality will give us constant updates, so we can remain assured that they are attending to this matter,” she said. Modimolle Local Municipality spokesperson Patrick Shika told The BEAT on Monday 4 July that it seems as though there are solid objects in the system, which made it difficult for the technicians to unblock it. “There have been constant blockages in that area. We have tried everything we can to fix the situation, but the problem recurs after some time. Under normal circumstances, it doesn’t take much time to fix a blocked sewer. We have determined that this situation needs much attention, and that is why we have decided to procure a Sewer Combination Jet to clean the entire system at that portion of Phagameng,” Shika said. Shika said that the Sewer Combination Jet was expected to start working on the site during the week. ANC councillor Godfrey Thapedi Malete ofPienaarsrivier woke up to a nasty surpriseon Sunday, 3 July, when he found his nameon the IEC candidate list of an oppositionparty he is not working for.

Malete, who has been an ANC loyalist formany years, and a PR councillor for Ward8, said that he was shocked when he wasinformed that his name was on the IEC listunder the African Christian DemocraticParty (ACDP).

To his surprise, his name and documentshad been submitted along with a signaturethat he does not remember signing, at theIEC at Bela-Bela.

On Monday, 4 July, Malete went to theIEC offices to enquire about the matter andwas told that the IEC could do nothingabout the matter, as the names had alreadybeen sent to their head office.

Speaking to The BEAT on Monday,Malate said that he is definitely still withthe ANC and has not crossed the floor toany other party.

“I want to know who is responsible forthis fraud,” said Malete.

Malete said that he asked the IEC to showhim where he is alleged to have signed, butwas allegedly told that the documentation isconfidential and that he could not see it.

Malete said that he was told by MafaNetshivhambe that only the police couldhelp with finding out who submitted the listwith his signature.

Unfortunately, Malete is not the only one

Chaos and confusionin IEC lists

TK Mashabawho found himself in the wrong party.Andries Mojela and Winnie Shirende ofTsakane, an informal settlement outsideBela-Bela, are apparently on the list of theUbuntu Party, a new party that has beenlaunched ahead of the local election.

“I was not told that I will be contestingthe election as a ward councillor for Ward7, and was surprised to hear that I am onthe list of the Ubuntu party while I am aloyal ANC member,” said Mojela.

He also approached the IEC offices toask whether they could withdraw hisname from Ubuntu’s candidate list.

Unlike Malete, Ubuntu leader KeenanAlberts said that Mojela agreed to theirterms and conditions and agreed to be puton the list.

“I was surprised when Mojela told methat I must withdraw his name,” Albertssaid. “He said that the ANC has promisedhim a new job, and I still have the textmessage he sent me.”

Netshivhambe, on behalf of the IEC,said that this was an issue they had neverexperienced before, and said that they arenot liable for people who change theirminds.

“At the moment the IEC is busy with theballot papers, and whoever is on the listwill be contesting the elections. Later, ifthe person wants to withdraw from theparty, we can have a by-election andanother person will replace them,” hesaid.

The ACDP party leader could not bereached for comment on the matter ofMalete.

themselves to join those who came to paytheir last respects to the MEC, they said thatthey were there as she was a daughter of thesoil and that they did not know why the restdid not attend. The attendees told The BEATthat a funeral is a funeral regardless of whois being buried or what the issues or politicalstate in the area may be. Some said that they

commitments and maybe had to attend to lastminute troubles so there is no problem withthat. Those who could not attend obviouslyhad good reasons so we cannot hold itagainst them as we are all human and aresometimes forced by reasons beyond ourcontrol to do certain things,” he said.Seloba further said that the turn out will not

affect the government’s decisions to hostevents in the area in future.
