World’s Greatest Geological Wonders Every Friday at 11:00 am

Art Room (NOTE: January 3rd video shown in the College Room)

Our video series, “The World’s Greatest Geological Wonders: 36

Spectacular Sites” has been drawing a large crowd of viewers in the Art

Room.

This course takes you to the world’s most spectacular geological

wonders, explains the forces that have formed them, and tells you the

stories that have grown up around them. Our planet

remains unique in the galaxy, even after space

investigations have found many hundreds of other planets

around other stars. Yet certain places stand out above the

others and epitomize the different types of amazing

geological phenomena that are found on Earth. These are the geologic

wonders of the world, we will travel to and investigate as many of them as

we can. Come join us every Friday at 11:00 am in the Art Room.

(Except January 3 will meet in College Rm).

“Digging the Middle East” Wednesday, January 8, 2014

7:30 pm Community Hall

The rediscovery of the Ancient Middle East is one of the great

achievements of the 20th Century. Cities like Ur of the Chaldees,

Babylon, Nineveh, Persepolis, Thebes, Memphis, Ugarit, and

Jerusalem, all have yielded marvelous

cultural materials to help us understand the societies

of past nations. The glories of the past are vivid in

the mind of the contemporary Middle Easterner; so

much so that they are are in danger of living in the

past without any thought for the present or the

future. The lecture presentation, "Digging the

Middle East" will explore the life and death issues of

the Canaanites, the evidence for early Israelite

settlements, and the implications for understanding

the current discussion between Israelis and Palestinians. Excavations by

Robert and Eileen Cooley will feature three sites: Tell Dothan, et'Tell

and Khirbet Raddanna, along with an update on the current controversies

underway in the region.

New Charlotte Library Books Arrive

On Thursday, January 2, a

new collection of books from

the Charlotte Public Library

will arrive. These are mostly fiction by

well-known authors, with a few Large

Print books. You will find them in

their usual spot in the Non-fiction area

near he desk. The goal is to avoid

duplicating books already available in

the library.

Limited shelf space has encouraged

the retention of the most popular

books, spiced up with

the new titles being

regularly contributed

by our members. Non

-fiction books remain

generally in one area, with fiction,

trade books, paper backs and mysteries

grouped together in their original area.

Readers are invited to browse and

make use of the enlarged seating areas.

Lunch Bunch visits

“Tupelo Honey Cafe” Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Depart at 11:15 am Bring money for lunch

This month we are discovering our own

Southern Traditions with flavors from the

South, starting with Tupelo Honey Café,

based in Asheville, NC.

Tupelo Honey opened in December 2013 in the

former Pewter Rose space on South Blvd. A new

elevator was installed to give easy

access to the second-floor

restaurant. It’s been named the

“Bee Line.” A chandelier in the

shape of Queen Charlotte’s crown

has been melded with Tupelo’s bee

theme in the entryway. Art and

decor with a local flair adorns the walls, including a

pair of red and glass swinging doors once used at the

Pewter Rose.

“While we revere the time-honored traditions of the

Southern cook, you will find our take on the Southern

plate a little different. Because Tupelo Honey Cafe is a

little different. Our transformation of just about

everything Southern – from fried chicken to sweet

potatoes to catfish – is decidedly spirited, independent,

and frequently unscripted.” Tupelo Honey is the Buzz

around town. Join your friends for an original Southern

lunch experience!

Broadway Lights Series “Book of Mormon” Thursday, January 2, 2014

Depart at 6:45 pm Belk Theater Tickets: $75

The Book of Mormon is a religious satire musical with book, lyrics, and

music by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone. Best known for

creating the animated comedy South Park, Parker and Stone co-created the

music with Lopez, a co-composer/co-lyricist of Avenue Q.

The Book of Mormon tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries sent to a

remote village in northern Uganda, where a brutal warlord is threatening the local

population. Naïve and optimistic, the two missionaries try to share the Book of

Mormon, which only one of them has read, but have trouble connecting with the locals

who are more worried about war, famine, poverty, and AIDS than about religion.
