17 GNLD continues to recognize the significance of the work of Dr. Arthur Furst and his dedication to the University of San Francisco. “GNLD is proud to support tomorrow’s research by recognizing today’s outstanding academic achievement,” proclaims John Miller, GNLD Vice President of Science & Technology, and Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) member. “Dr. Furst was a pioneer in toxicology and cancer research and we are honored to continue this recognition in his name.” This year’s recipient is a mixture of charm, athleticism, health-consciousness, and academic achievement. Undergraduate Elizabeth Noey is a perfect selection to represent the embodiment of this award. As a cross-country and track and field competitor, Elizabeth was as anxious to join USF’s athletic department as she was its esteemed Chemistry department. She trains each morning and recognizes that solid nutrition plays a key role in her performance. “I respect that GNLD represents a company that understands the connection between what you put into your body and its overall performance.” While her parents may not be science- oriented, Elizabeth’s Grandfather was a scientist in Secret City (Oak Ridge, TN) during World War II and Elizabeth wonders if some of her interest and ability stem from his branch of the family tree. In April 2008, Elizabeth was given the opportunity to present her research project, “Designing Stable Aromatic Mobius Annulenes,” in New Orleans at the American Chemical Society’s National Conference. Whether she is describing events, “The ACS conference is sort of like an adult Science Fair, with different projects and studies on display” or scientific terms, “Molecules can be bonded together in single or double bonds. When every other bond is a double bond, that’s an annulene,” Elizabeth has a knack for simplifying complex concepts. This talent should serve her well if she decides to pursue her goal of becoming a professor. For now, breaking her Personal Best in the 5K and focusing on molecular stability seem to keep her busy. This scholarship represents a bridge between the years at USF previous to her attendance and the years that will follow her. “I was honored to receive this scholarship because I had heard such great things from my professors about Dr. Furst and the ground-breaking work he did.” SAB member and Vice President of Science & Technology John Miller presents the prestigious Arthur Furst Undergraduate Scholarship to Elizabeth Noey at the University of San Francisco.
