Freezing temperatures and historic snowfallwere not enough to dampen the spirts ofthose in attendance for the dedicationceremony of the Kaibab Trail SuspensionBridge as an ASCE National Historic CivilEngineering Landmark. plaque, the most accessible of the two, isinstalled on the south rim near the YavapaiGeology Museum. The second plaque, which entails a steep hike into the canyon,is installed at the bridge itself, nearly a milelower in elevation.

The Kaibab Trail Suspension Bridge wasbuilt in 1928 at the bottom of the GrandCanyon and at the time provided the onlyColorado River crossing between Moab,Utah and Needles, California.

Even today, the Black Bridge and its neighboring Silver Bridge (constructed in the 1960s) arethe only crossings between the Navajo Bridge and the Hoover Dam (both of which are alsodedicated ASCE National Historic Engineering Landmarks). The construction site was soremote that access was limited to humans and mules, descending over 4,780 feet into thecanyon by way of the 7-mile South Kaibab Trail. The 440-foot suspension bridge required122 tons of materials and supplies, including four 550-foot suspension cables, each weighingin at one ton. These cables were carried down the trail by 42 Havasupai tribesmen walkingsingle file. The remaining pieces were hauled down by human power or by mules, with eachpiece being no longer than 10-feet and weighing no more than 200 pounds.

“As civil engineers, we take great pride in designing and constructing structures and sites thatbecome legacies of our communities”, said ASCE President Robin Kemper. “The Kaibab TrailSuspension Bridge is a prime example of engineering innovation. Engineering the bridgeunder such unfavorable conditions reflects on the resourcefulness and innovation of the civilengineers responsible for this project.”

The Arizona Section thanks Jonathon Upchurch, P.E., PTOE, F.ASCE for his work on thenomination application and for organizing the dedication ceremony. This year I had the privilege of serving as the planning committee chair for the 2019Engineers Week in Southern Arizona. Each year, the ASCE Southern Arizona Branch (SAB)President-Elect serves as the E-Week committee chairperson. The planning committeeincludes members from ASCE SAB, Society of American Military Engineers (SAME),Advancing Women in Transportation (WTS), National Society of Professional Engineers(NSPE), Southern Arizona Institute for Transportation Engineers (SAITE), ASCE Younger

Members Forum (YMF) and the University of Arizona Society of Civil Engineers StudentChapter (UASCE). This committee has been working hard since November to organize allevents for 2019 Engineers Week. The main goal of these events is to celebrate howengineers make a difference in our world, as well as to bring engineering to life for children, educators and parents.

Engineers Week was kicked off by a cornhole tournament organized and hosted by the ASCEYMF group on Friday, February 15th at Culinary Dropout. About 10 people participated for anight filled with games, food and refreshments. Thank you to Jose Aguilar (ASCE SAB YMFPresident) for organizing this event.

The Discover Engineering at the Mall Dayis an annual event to inspire children andinform the community about the differentways engineers impact everyday life. Theevent was hosted at Park Place Mall onSaturday, February 16th. It includeddifferent hands-on STEM activities forelementary school kids with tables hostedby ASCE SAB, ASCE YMF, ASCE UASCE,SAME, Structural Engineers Association ofArizona (SEAoA), Tucson Water, ProjectWet, and City of Tucson StormwaterManagement.

Some of the activities included mixing"asphalt" cookies, building spaghettitowers, and identifying infrastructure onthe ASCEville poster. A huge thank you toChelsi Remme (ASCE SAB Vice President)who took lead in organizing this event.

The Southern Arizona Engineers Week Awards Banquet celebrates the engineers andeducators who make a world of difference in our community. This event was held on Tuesday,February 19th at the DoubleTree by Hilton Tucson Airport. This year’s featured speaker wasDr. J. Roger Angel, Reagents’ Professor of Astronomy and Optical Sciences at the Universityof Arizona, who presented on Big Telescopes and Solar Energy. Dr. Angel also shared insighton how engineers play a role in his area of expertise.

During the banquet, the award recipients for the different categories were recognized. TheSouthern Arizona Educator of the Year was awarded to Sue Dukart (K-8) and James Luckow(Secondary), the Young Engineer of the Year was awarded to Ryan Badilla and the Engineerof the Year to Randy Harris. ASCE SAB YMF and SAITE also awarded four deservingengineering students’ scholarships for the upcoming school year. Congratulations to the 2019award recipients!

It was my pleasure to host the banquet activities and raffle. The live auction was emceed byBrent Borchers (ASCE Region 9 Governor) and included this years’ autographed U of Amen's basketball, autographed U of A football and a Del Bac set for the ASCE SAB civilengineering scholarship fund. This event wassponsored by Sundt and celebrated at their Tucson office on February 22nd. About 40 younggirls and their parents attended the event where they joined engineering presentations, enjoyed lunch with engineering mentors and finally participated in the construction of agummy tower. The presentations included guest speakers from Sundt, Texas Instruments andRaytheon. All presenters and mentors were local female engineers who shared inspirationalstories about their career.
