PRAYER OF CONFESSION Kyrie Schubert choir sings, congregation repeats

God of great love, You have done great things for us. You make a way through our brokenness,

so hope might be restored; you loosen our grip on fear, so we might take hold of the One

who cradles us in the palms of grace. And yet we grow comfortable with the way things are in our lives, in the church, and in the world. We do not always welcome the new life you offer us in Christ, for you overturn our notions of power and protocol. Sure of our own righteousness, we are critical of others. Wanting to control our assets, We hoard the gifts you give us. Forgive us, we pray. Fill us, our homes, our churches, the whole world with the abundant love of Christ until all are made new.

Kyrie congregation will sing as printed previously

*CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

Meaning of the Sacrament

Beloved in the Lord Jesus Christ, the holy Supper which we are about to celebrate is a feast of remembrance, of communion, and of hope. We come in remembrance that our Lord Jesus Christ was sent of the Father into the world to assume our flesh and blood and to fulfil for us all obedience to the divine law, even to the bitter and shameful death of the cross.

By his death, resurrection, and ascension Christ established a new and eternal covenant of grace and reconciliation that we might be accepted of God and never be forsaken. We have come to have communion with this same Christ, who has promised to be with us always, even to the end of the world.

In the breaking of the bread he makes himself known to us as the true heavenly Bread that strengthens us to life eternal. In the cup of blessing Christ comes to us as the true Vine in whom we must abide if we are to bear fruit.

We come in hope, believing that this bread and this cup are a pledge and foretaste of the feast of love of which we shall partake when Christ’s kingdom has fully come, when with unveiled face we shall see him, made like him in his glory. Christ, by his death, resurrection, and ascension, has obtained for us the life-giving Spirit, who unites us all in one body. So we are to receive this supper in true love, mindful of the communion of saints.

Communion Prayer

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Holy and right it is, and our joyful duty . . . . . . we worship and adore your glorious name.

POSTLUDE Now Let Us Sing for Joy J.S. Bach

Participating in worship today are Pastor Jill Russell, preaching; Pastor Andrew Spidahl, liturgist; Deb Smith, reader; Deacon, crucifer; Chancel Choir directed by Brian Carder; Ruth Keel, organist, Ellen Rizner, Gary Rizner, violins.

Pastor Gordon is at Heartside Ministry in Grand Rapids today with the 8th - 9th grade G.I.F.T. class.

Music notes: The Deutsche Messe (1827) by Schubert stems from a tradition of low masses, settings of religious texts in vernacular languages in Austria and southern Germany. It was commissioned by Johann Philipp Neumann, who was interested in simple music designed to appeal to "the widest possible congregation. Schubert then composed chordal music, more hymn-like, for the people to easily sing. The style of text and composition was great departure from traditional Catholic mass settings which were sung in latin and included chant portions.

The rose in the chancel is placed to celebrate the birth of Elineke Whitman, born to Dana Huisman-Whitman and Adam Whitman on March 5.

Children ages 3 through grade 5 are invited to leave the sanctuary after the Word with the Children to participate in Children in Worship.
