I cannot remember a time with more optimism and positivity. Spring bull sales were as strong as I can remember and indicators look good for a strong calf market this fall. All factors appear to be aligning for a very bright future in the cattle industry. With all of the good things our sector is currently experiencing it becomes increasingly easy to become complacent and overlook the details that have gotten us to where we are at. I suggest that now is not the time to lose track of your bearings. Now is the time to pay attention to the details that have made your operation so successful. Embracing Innovations ... Continued from cover

Not that long ago right? Nowadays, breeders are faced with the expectation of doing all of these things plus having the perfect photograph, an active social media presence, recent video footage and an updated website. It can all become over whelming, choose the tools that you are the most comfortable with and use them well. Through the use of social and digital media you are trying to put your best foot forward. An inactive social media account, outdated website or poor quality photo(s) provide hints that you are struggling to keep pace. There are only so many hours in a day to manage all of these various platforms so choose the ones you will make the time to use. As my grandfather always said, “Any job worth doing is worth doing well!”.

The use of genomics has become the latest buzz within beef cattle breeding circles. Genomics can be an extremely p o w e r f u l t o o l a n d has proven i t s m e r i t i n other sectors of animal agriculture. Take the time to educate yourself about this technology and how it can best be implemented into your own and your customers operations. Companies like Canadian Tire are great at promoting

tools that can do everything from fix the kitchen sink to mow the backyard. The reality is that trade professionals carry large tool boxes with a range of various tools in them to do their jobs

properly. Do not let genomics b e c o m e t h e miracle cure for your operation, once you better u n d e r s t a n d how to utilize t h e p o w e r o f g e n o m i c i n f o r m a t i o n , consider adding i t i n t o y o u r professional tool box. There are Canadian Angus

Association staff members and fellow breeders who are extremely well versed in this subject and are very capable of breaking it down to a rancher level of comprehension. Make the time to talk to these folks.

Another program that I believe is well worth educating yourself and your

customers about is the newly released Western L i v e s t o c k Price Insurance P r o g r a m .

Typically cattle producers have been price takers and at the mercy of factors that impact the market.

Historically market volatility is due to sudden changes in price, exchange rate and basis. These three factors are extremely difficult for most beef producers to manage. By making a program available for producers that protects them against the “unknowns” of markets they can build profitability into their operations. As of this spring all western Canadian livestock producers have a risk management tool available that helps to protect against unexpected declines in market prices over a defined time period. The Western Livestock Price Insurance Program was designed to be market driven and reflective of the various risks livestock producers face in western Canada. There are programs available for cow calf producers, backgrounders and cattle feeders. Make sure to educate yourself on how this program is best suited for your operation.

The Saskatchewan Angus Association will proudly be hosting the 2014 Canadian Angus National Convention, June 4th – 8th in Moose Jaw, SK. This will be a great opportunity to build upon your network of peers. Many of the folks at these events are the true professionals within our industry and have a lifetime of valuable experience that they are willing to share. I encourage you to “embrace innovations” with an open mind and enthusiasm. By getting involved, asking hard questions and sharing openly we will move our industry forward. ♦

Do not let genomics become the miracle

cure for your operation, once you

better understand how to utilize the power of genomic information, consider adding it into your professional tool

box.

President’s Report ... by Mike Howe

After finishing up an extremely successful bull sale season there is a great deal of optimism in the agriculture i n d u s t r y , particularly the beef industry. We saw calves selling

for more than they ever have, along with bull sale averages that were extremely high.

We are coming up on some exciting events that the association will be involved with. We hope everyone knows by now that the Canadian Angus Association Convention and annual meetings are going to be held in Moose Jaw June 4-8. We encourage everyone to participate in the activities. We also encourage everyone to invite their commercial customers to the Rancher Endorsed day to be held on the Friday of Convention. Early bird registration has been extended to May 10 - check out the form on page 3 of this issue of the Edge and send it in right away to save $25! Hotel rooms are

at a premium in Moose Jaw the weekend of Convention so PLEASE book with Temple Gardens ASAP. If you are having trouble finding rooms, please contact our office and they will try to help you out. There are many historic attractions in Moose Jaw, some great shops and of course the ‘tunnels’.

We are also excited to be having an Angus tour/field day August 7 & 8 in the Swift Current area. Details are just being finalized but you can be sure it will be a great time of fellowship and viewing of some excellent Saskatchewan Angus cattle herds. Display space will be available for breeders to bring animals to the Fairgrounds during the Thursday evening BBQ/social.

Our annual “Summer” Gold & Junior Show will be a ‘Fall’ show this year as we thought to try something new and different - it will be in conjunction with the Lloydminster Stockade Roundup Thursday, October 30 - Saturday, November 1 and Lloydminster is extremely happy to host us as a run up to the 2015 National Angus Show which will be held during their 2015 Show.

Saskatchewan is host to the National Angus Show two years in a row! Our committee is busy planning some exciting additions for the 2014 National that will be held November 24-29 at Canadian Western Agribition. We encourage you to bring cattle to the show, and for everyone to come take part in the exciting atmosphere that we know will be there. The Masterpiece Sale, managed by Castlerock Marketing and the Power & Perfection Sale, managed by Bohrson Marketing Services will see some excellent genetics on offer as well.

We held a board meeting the last week of April and found that unfortunately, our research project with the Western Beef Development Centre will not be able to go forward as the grant funding applications have been declined. We are looking into some other research opportunities and hope to provide some real benefit to our membership for our investment.

As you can see we are embarking on an extremely busy and exciting rest of the year. Please make plans to join us at these events!♦

Spring… what a g r e a t t i m e of year. After a long, cold , windy winter, we are now enjoying warm weather and sunshine.

As we walk through the pens of cows with new calves, we assess the results of our past years work and breeding decisions. It’s spring time again and we look forward with enthusiasm.

The next project is breeding for our 2015 calf crop. It’s like a quarterback on game day and knowing it is essential to be successful and productive. We need to limit interceptions, overthrows and maximize forward progress, much of which comes with training and practice.

Much of our forward progress comes from the herd bulls we select. We like to do business with people we trust and respect and have the kind and quality

Nominations are now open and a winner will be selected by the Board at their fall meeting prior to CWA. The recipient will be notified of the award and invited to the Angus Show at Canadian Western Agribition.

Please provide the Name, Address and a brief History on the individual(s) with your nomination. Also provide your Name and Contact Information.

$1000 Angus Credit for Commercial Cattle

Show Champions and $500 for Reserves!

2014 National Angus Show ...The Saskatchewan Angus Association is so excited to be hosting the 2014 National Angus Show during Agribition! We are planning an awesome event including a mixer for both purebred and commercial Angus exhibitors - there will be free food & drinks!

In the commercial show, we are offering $3000 in sale credits to the

champions - so bring your Angus influenced open replacements and bred heifers to town and you could win a credit to purchase your next bull!

Prizes in the purebred show will include CASH, jackets, banners and custom buckles. The 2014 National Show is going to be fantastic, so look forward to lots of special features and a great display of cattle!

As you know, it takes a lot of help to pull together an event of this calibre, so if you are willing and able to assist in showcasing Angus cattle and celebrating our commercial customers, we would sure appreciate it! Watch (and listen) for ways you can be an even bigger part of the National Angus Show this fall!♦

of cattle that we want in our own herd. First we need to identify these herds. Look at the mother, sisters and all related production and sales. A bulls daughters will look and produce much like his mother and grandmother.

Beef cattle need to be moderate framed, easy fleshing and born unassisted to be efficient in today’s large herds. A herd bull needs to be masculine with lots of muscle and daughters feminine and fertile with good, tight udders, small well placed teats and good feet and legs. Most cattle are still sold by visual appraisal, so thick, growth cattle with hair will always top the market.

With raising cattle it is not about winning, but learning from past mistakes, being satisfied with our own progress and proud of the product produced whether by short passes or by the odd long bomb.

Wishing everyone a great summer.♦

Saskatchewan Angus 2014 Tour/Field Day

New Director Profile ... Tracey Willms

After nearly t e n y e a r s away from the Saskatchewan Angus Board, I am excited to ded ica t e s o m e t i m e and energy to serv ing our

breed in Saskatchewan! My husband, Bryan and I own and operate Wilbar Cattle Co. near Dundurn, SK. Wilbar has been in the registered Angus business since 1963 - first with Bryan’s grandparents, Jake & Bernice and then joined by their sons Dan & Jud. Our children, Kylie & Owen, are the 4th generation of Wilbar. Recently, Bryan and I took over the

cattle operation which includes about 300 cows. We are also still involved in the grain operation and enjoy the rewards and challenges of a family farm. I grew up in the foothills of Alberta on a commercial cow/calf ranch. I was surrounded by a community steeped in western heritage - in fact, our kids are 6th generation in agriculture on my side of the family.

My first purebred Red Angus heifer was purchased through Red Roundup in 1989. I fell in love with the breed and the people very early in life! When Bryan and I got married, I brought my small herd of purebred cows with me - there was a couple of pretty good cow families in that group too! There is little doubt that the beef

industry is an exciting place right now! Record prices and unprecedented optimism are overdue rewards for the challenges endured over the past decade. I believe that our breed has the confidence of commercial cattlemen and it is our job as breeders to preserve that confidence. That happens only through diligence in breeding and selection; through an unwavering commitment to quality and the benefits of Angus cattle.

I’m looking forward to seeing many people at the Canadian Angus Association Convention & AGM in Moose Jaw in June.

Wishing you much success!♦Tracey [email protected]

CEO Report ... By Rob Smith, CEO Canadian Angus Association

What a great spring! Winter was absolutely terrible (pretty much all over Canada, save for most of BC, it appears) but the bull sales this spring have been DY-NO-MITE!!! I hope you are feeling optimistic about your industry because our future is truly so bright, you better break out an extra pair of Ray-Bans…

Okay… enough of the cheesy ‘70’s and ‘80’s pop culture references. Here is some key news for you for today…

National Convention“ A n g u s 2 0 1 4 : E m b r a c i n g Innovation”, our Canadian Angus National Convention from June 4th – 8th in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. This is our 3rd national convention and our 108th CAA annual meeting. Please consider this your OFFICIAL invitation to join your fellow Angus breeders in Moose Jaw as we name our Long-Term Member “Heritage” Awards, Honorary Presidents, Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador, our Dick Turner Memorial Scholarship and, for the very first time, our Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Award. We’ll have a big ol’ national Angus party to celebrate our great year in 2013 and a midway recognition of another solid year in 2014. Please consider coming and lending your leadership and vision as we continue to plan for Angus sustainability through innovation in our future.

And please work with your families and friends to support the “Building the Legacy 3” Foundation sale. This is the largest annual Foundation fundraiser and the real ‘mine’ that has led to new member benefits. The more successful this sale is, the more we can create benefit so please help to make it our most successful fundraiser yet.

NEWS FLASH!!! NEWS FLASH!!! The “Building the Legacy 3” Foundation sale has a couple of BIG announcements to make!!!

You may have grown accustomed to the breed-leading genetics on offer in this annual event: the most unique and high profile bulls have semen available and breed-leading females offer intriguing, value-adding embryos, many of which are ONLY available in our Foundation fundraising auction. Last year, LLB

Angus (Lee & Laura Brown and family – Erskine, AB) ‘raised the bar’ by taking the chance of offering a “Pick of the calendar year heifer calves”. This was hugely successful and we’ve got TWO who are making this donation in 2014!!!

Bless those amazing Saskatchewan Angus breeders!

Providing “Pick of the 2014-born Heifer Calves” at this year’s sale are national Angus leaders Wilbar Cattle Co. – Bryan & Tracey Willms and family, Dundurn, SK AND South View Ranch – Keith & Linda Kaufmann and Shane & Alexis Kaufmann and family, Ceylon, SK. This is great and big and amazing news!!! What tremendous dedication to our Foundation principles! What inspiring altruism! Please… if you see any member of the Willms and Kaufmann families anytime in the future, please extend your thanks and congratulations for their unbelievably generous donation.

And please recognize ALL the donors to the Foundation sale, because every single item is donated and we appreciate this generosity very much.

An upcoming package coming for you in the mailIf you haven’t already, you will be receiving a package in the mail shortly

from your CAA. There are THREE very important pieces of information in this envelope, ALL of which require action on your part! Well… certainly TWO of them do, and hopefully you will be motivated by the third as well:

1) Canadian Angus Association By-Laws review – this is probably the most comprehensive review of our CAA by-laws in close to 20 years. The Board approved a number of bylaws amendments that will now go to you, the membership, for consideration. You will be receiving this package in the mail in the next few weeks. Please respond and let the Board know whether you support, or do not, their suggestions. Among the bylaws suggestions include:

a) formally incorporating the Canadian Angus Foundation and Canadian Junior Angus into the CAA bylaws;

b) allowing for Board decisions to be made, communication regarding all meetings to occur, as well as member transfer authorization, via electronic means;

c) tweaking the process by which our Board President Elect becomes President as well as how the President Elect is chosen;

d) changing the location of our national office;

e) allowing family members to share a herd name;

f) modification to the section about genetic defects to represent the new CAA Genetic Conditions Policy;

g) a significant number of rather cosmetic changes.

2) YOUR Communications Preferences – if you have not completed this form previously, we are sending it to you again. Please fill this out, either on the form in your package or through the electronic variant, and this will determine how YOUR CAA shares information with and engages YOU!!!

Page 15: The Angus Edge - Summer 2014

Angus Edge - Summer 2014 Page 15

3) Information about next month’s Carcass 101 school we are operating in conjunction with Certified Angus Beef (CAB) LLP at Olds College. This hands-on learning opportunity will follow animals from live evaluation through retail cutting, talking about the advantages of Angus genetics to add value through this entire process. The program is extremely affordably-priced and we encourage you to come, learn, and network with your fellow Angus breeders and some of the most impressive resources involved in analyzing genetic advancement to achieve greater profitability for every link in the value chain. To learn more about this cool opportunity of which we are most proud and register:http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07e94lt24y-da9b156a&llr=hnxbufjab. Or perhaps find it easier on the Home Page of our CAA website.

Other newsOur Summer Marketing Interns have started their 2014 campaign to increase awareness of the 4-H beef female (i.e. heifer, cow/calf pair) projects to current and prospective 4-H members, increase membership and engagement in Canadian Junior Angus and other marketing efforts in support of our CAA initiatives as well as those of the regional association in their home province. This year’s interns are: Saskatchewan – Kaitlin (Katie)

Olynyk ([email protected]): Goodeve, SK; located in the Saskatchewan Angus Association office in Regina;

Ontario – Sophie Wotten ([email protected]); will operate out of her home at Little Britain;

Alberta – Keltey Whelan ([email protected]): stationed

at Angus Central.

If you see our interns anywhere, please be sure to tell them who you are and if you’d like them at an event, please contact either the intern or Tina ([email protected]) here at Angus Central.

Please be reminded that the electronic registration discount for 2014 is not based on a July 15th deadline as has been the case. Here is the wording from the Board as determined at their September 2013 meeting:Any 2014-born calf registered online between January 1st, 2014 and December 31st, 2014 which is less than 6 months of age will be registered for the $15 electronic registration fee.

The deeply discounted rates for parentage verification expired on March 31st, but the CAA Board has approved reduced fees moving forward! Your CAA Fee Schedule, effective April 1st, 2014, will include these modified fees:

I am really looking forward to Showdown in Virden this July. Showdown is one of my annual highlights and with the Manitoba Angus Association embracing our national Junior show so much they’re holding their Gold Show in conjunction, it’s a huge vote of confidence and enhancement of an already great event. We have more Foundation benefits that will impact Showdown so please come to your show and Manitoba and let’s have a lot of fun and meet a bunch more people! I know a good time will be had by all…

M y b r i l l i a n t S a s k a t c h e w a n ‘vacation’…Finally, I was incredibly fortunate to spend a week touring Saskatchewan earlier this month. I visited Wilbar Cattle Co. (Dundurn), Bridgeway Livestock (Kelso); Johnson Livestock (Peebles), Brooking Angus Ranch (Radville), Peak Dot Ranch (Wood Mountain) and Sandy Bar Ranch (Aneroid). Further, my trip coincided with three amazingly successful sales I was able to attend: Young Dale 11th Annual Bull & Female Sale (Alameda), 14th Annual South View Ranch Red & Black Angus Bull Sale (Ceylon) and Six Mile 39th Annual Bull Sale (Fir Mountain). In addition to these inspired Canadian Angus breeders I was able to visit with many more at their sales. I left my week in Saskatchewan with these thoughts: I saw some of the greatest Angus cattle I’ve ever seen; I was extremely well-hosted; I enjoyed thoughtful, stimulating, insightful, helpful and progressive conversation with people who really care about the

‘Angus cause’ in Canada and encourage their Canadian Angus Association to do all it can to further that cause. I had one of the best weeks of my almost three years as your CEO and I hope to do this more in the future. Thank you Willms, Young, Sauter, Johnson,

Kaufmann, Morrison, Moneo, Gibson and Switzer families… and many thanks, Saskatchewan. The biggest thing I take home from my trip? Saskatchewan Angus… you got it GOIN’ ON!!!

That’s all I got, folks. Until next time…

Cheers,

Rob

Saskatchewan Junior Angus Report... by Katie Olynyk

Hello fellow cattlemen, women and children! My what an exciting year it has been for the SJAA! GOAL 2014 was held in the home of the greatest outdoor show on earth, Calgary Alberta, and what a show we had! SJAA was able to sponsor seven juniors this year to attend the conference. Wade Olynyk, Shane Roger, Kodie Doetzel, Lexi Hicks, and Ty Hicks all made the drive down to Calgary along with Erin Toner and Katherine Laycraft. All had an amazing time. It was a great experience and I suggest everyone apply for a grant to get sponsored to go to next years GOAL, which for the first time in history will make the journey out east to Guelph, Ontario.

T h i s y e a r S h o w d o w n i s b e i n g h e l d a s t o n e s t h r o w from our lovely province, hosted by our neighbors t o t h e e a s t , Manitoba. Mark your calendars for July 17-19 for Showdown 2014 in Virden, Manitoba. Entries are due June 1, late entries accepted until June 20, but the earlier the better (and they cost less money by June 1 too)! For those of you who do not know exactly where the quaint town of Virden is located it is on Hwy #1, a mere 52 minutes from Moosomin, SK and only about 20 minutes from the Saskatchewan border. So let’s make our SJAA presence known in Manitoba at Showdown 2014!

Our Gold and Junior show this year will be taking a new direction and will be held in Lloydminster at their fall show. The dates are October 30-November 1, so we haven’t had our SJAA show planning meeting yet – stay tuned for more details. It will be an exciting new time at the GOLD show so also mark that on your calendar.

Also very exciting this year is the Canadian Angus National Convention being held in our very own lovely land of the living skies! From June 4-8 Moose Jaw will be a buzz (or should I say a moo) with Angus enthusiasts! At the convention the competition for

the Canadian Angus Foundation Junior Ambassador will be held. This is an amazing opportunity for all junior members, who are over 18 and want to travel and meet new people! Entries were due April 30, and I hope a bunch of you applied! If you want more information all you need to do is go on to the Canadian Angus Association website and click on the Foundation tab. There you will find applications for the Junior Ambassadorship as well as CAF scholarship and travel opportunities - there are lots, some due right away!

The CJAA exchange trips with the two US junior association’s are due May 10 and again, I would encourage everyone to consider traveling to either Round-up or LEAD. I was one of the lucky members who attended LEAD in New Orleans last year and it was wonderful. CJAA scholarship applications are due June 15 too – information on both of these are on the Canadian Angus web-site under the Junior tab.

The SJAA also offers a scholarship for $500, and as a post-secondary student I can attest every penny counts! This scholarship and many more can be found on the CAF page of the Canadian Angus website under the “Scholarship” tab. There are many opportunities out there for you to take advantage of – check them out! I look forward to seeing you at the many Angus events being held this summer. ♦
