Class: IV D

School: “Gheorghe Titeica” Constanta - Romania

Class Teacher: Gabriela Florea

English Teacher: Dorina Sacu

The idea for this mini-book came from a Romanian poem

we studied, entitled „Autumn Rhapsodies”, by George

Toparceanu. We fell in love with this beautiful creature

of nature, so we decided to celebrate it in this way: we

wrote some compositions and poems and we made some

drawings.

The Dragonfly Dream

Autumn came in a few days and it was quite warm outside. The pale sun

was still smiling in the sky.

A little graceful dragonfly was flying happily over a field of autumn

flowers. Its body was thirsty for life, like a desert area longing for water. It

didn’t want winter to come and send it to death. But the cold would surely come

and the little dragonfly would be numbed and would dream of flowers and sun. It

would wake up in the spring and would be able to fly again over the endless fields.

The beauty of the dragonfly

The dragonfly is a very special insect.

Its colour is like the rainbow after the rain or like sunlight filtered through the

eyelashes. You can’t tell if it is violet, greenish or golden, you only know that it has thin lines

of iridescent metal.

Its long delicate wings seem to be like the mantle of a knight fighting for justice. Maybe

this is the reason why its English name sounds like a warrior name, because despite its grace

and fragility, it seems to be created for an air fight.

Its flight through the air, like an endless oscillation, it’s like an old ritual, known only

by itself. It makes you wonder if it stops on a leaf or if it continues the journey, because the

dragonfly is tireless.

By its perfection delights and fascinates us at the same time, and among all the insects,

it seems to be the ideal of beauty.

The weird bead

One day, once upon a time, there was a

little girl. She was out to play with her friends.

They were playing “hide and seek”.

Suddenly, they heard something under the

dry leaves. The little girl took the leaves and saw

something like a moving bead. It sounded like a

woodpecker knocking on a tree. She took the weird

bead and went home.

After a few days, the bead started to crack. A tiny graceful dancer took its first breath,

struggling to float in the air. Suddenly, the little girl cried:

- Are you a dragonfly? I’ll call you Lubi!

Lubi had a round body shaped like the sun. It was playful and full of life like the dry

ground of the summer waiting for the rain.

Lubi and the little girl became best friends in the world.

The perfect creation

On a summer day, when I was fishing, a creature like an

airplane sat on my rod. It had four wings, tail like a stick and as

eyes it had some tiny buttons, too big for its head, though. The six

legs, like broken straw, helped it only to land because on the rod it

stayed still. It seemed to be the creation of a bored little child.

When my rod trembled because of a fish, the “toy” opened its

wings and rose up. Then my eyes saw very clearly that it was a

perfect creation of nature. I was impressed by the speed with

which it vanished in the air.

A bizarre insect

In the backyard, between layers of perfumed flowers

of spring, I saw a bizarre insect. Its body, like of sun, flew

like the speed of thought. Now I saw it above the scented

irises, then it was on the right side of the daffodils like colored

buttons. Its graceful flight made her look like a broken ray

of sun carried by the light wind.

I watched it minute after minute, thinking of how

wonderful it was.

Little poems

My dragonfly

Sleep on my hand Let’s run together, Let’s run together,

Let’s dance in the forest,

Enjoying our life, Dreaming again and again

Our happy dream.

Joyful and hungry

For the long waited sun.

General characterization

Dragonflies have elongated bodies, large multifaceted eyes, six legs and two pairs of

strong transparent wings. They have an extremely good sight.

Dragonflies are valuable predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like

flies, bees, ants, and very rarely butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds,

streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic.

Dragonflies are some of the fastest insects in the world. They can fly forwards or

backwards or hover like a helicopter.

Dimensions

Most species of dragonflies in the temperate zones are between 5-8 cm, but the

wingspan of some tropical species may reach 20 cm. The largest known dragonfly had a

wingspan of 74 cm.

Spread

Dragonflies can be found in all temperate and tropical regions of the world, lakes,

ponds and rivers.
