THE CONCEPT

The Altar of Unity Project is a worldwide directed, cultural collaboration based on the vision of the artist, Oksana Mas. The purpose is to bring together communities, nations and religions in the spirit of one. With appreciation for each individual’s contribution of creatively painted eggs, the mosaic will identify man’s dreams, ideas, memories and personal hopes, free from global concerns, towards the embracing and acceptance of a unified world.

WHY THE PAINTED EGG?

Oksana Mas chose the painted egg as the principal element in the mosaic being one of the oldest and most universal symbols of ancient cultures as well as for its pure essence of form experienced from youth to old age. The egg is the beginning of life. When a line is drawn around an egg, its completion can only be visualized knowing the form is elliptical. The actual act of drawing therefore provokes heightened concentration, even a state of meditation and prayer. The endless possibilities of image making, abstract and realistic, is a window into multi-facetted complexity of contemporary man. By sharing your individual creativity, Oksana’s artwork becomes your artwork in creating the universal language for the Altar of Unity.

ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS

The use of materials in art today cannot avoid issues that arise regarding environmental impact. Wood is the material of choice for the manufacture of the eggs for the Altar of Unity based on the historical tradition of icons, living energy of both the substance and that given by the artist’s hand as well as durability. To meet ecological standards, the wood has been obtained from specially designated areas of ‘sanitary de-forestation’ where the emerging growth of new trees is not threatened in any way.

BACKGROUND

Altar of Unity is inspired by the treasured universal Flemish masterpiece, the Ghent Altarpiece. The artwork was designed as a moving polyptych, painted and completed in 1432 by brothers, Hubert and Jan Van Eyck for Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, and most importantly, commissioned to symbolize the life cycle, sacrifice in honor of man’s value on earth, and unity of mankind. The living destiny of this work of art from its Renaissance inception has followed a mysterious as well as mystical path of theft, destruction and adoration, subject to much discussion by art historians and theologians. As the work has always somehow returned to its place of origination, an unmistakable aura of transcendent power is its protection. In response to this magnetism, complexity and glory, Mas’s Altar of Unity is a modern day spiritual and philosophical appropriation, addressing timeless issues the Ghent Altarpiece proposed, perhaps in anticipation five hundred years later of a new Renaissance.

STATISTICS

The first project of the platform, Altar of Unity, consists of fragments, 6 x 6 meters in size. To gather each of them – 12800 wooden elements are required. 20 fragments have been completed by the participants from 42 countries and exhibited as large freestanding works. 236 000 eggs have been already used. The height of the gathered installation is 22 meters high and 52 meters wide, but it is only 10% out of the whole piece. The installation now requires 3,242,400 painted eggs to finish the installation, which is anticipated to take nine years and will be 134 meters wide by 92 meters high (approximately 30 stories).

INTERNATIONAL VISIBILITY

A major installation of Fragments from the Altar of Unity won the ‘hearts’ of more than eight million visitors to the 54th Venice Biennale and continues to amaze and influence people internationally with its imaginative and challenging magnitude. Installations which inspired an ever-increasing following and support have also taken place in Kiev and Odessa, while in planning stages for London, New York, Vatican, and either Beijng or Shanghai.
