Filoli, the historic estate in Woodside, holds its nine-day Holiday Traditions

fundraising celebration from Nov. 26 through Dec. 4. This year’s theme is “Visions of Sugarplums Dancing,” with decorations and merchandise inspired by classic tales of past holidays. Holiday Traditions is centered on the first floor of the 36,000-square-foot mansion, with each room transformed to showcase the merchandise on sale for the Holiday Boutique. The Filoli house courtyard will be turned into a 19th century winter park with gas lamps, park

benches, and ice skaters, said Filoli spokeswoman Christina Syrett. Highlights of the nine-day event include a dinner party with live music on Saturday, Nov. 27, and a Filoli Children’s Party on Satur-day, Dec. 4. Buffets lunches and bistro dinners are held at select times throughout the event. Proceeds support the preserva-tion of Filoli, a 654-acre property that is a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Rosemary Kopmeier Bradford Hewlett, who for 22 years was married to William R. Hewlett, co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, died Oct. 29 at her home in Atherton after a short ill-ness. She was 91. Born in Milwaukee, she attended Smith College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in English. While on a ski trip to Sun Val-ley, Idaho, she met the man who would become her first husband, Robert Adam Bradford of Boston. They married in 1942 and lived in Milwaukee until they moved to Atherton in 1957. The Bradfords had four sons and a daughter. In addition to raising her family, she was actively involved in the Palo Alto Junior League, Sacred Heart Preparatory School in Atherton, and Woodside Priory in Portola Valley. She was also an accomplished horsewom-an, avid tennis and golf player, and an experienced bridge player, family members said. The family spent many holidays in Sun Valley, where they were enthusiastic skiers. The Bradfords were married for 27 years until his

death from cancer in 1969. In 1978, she married Wil-liam R. Hewl-ett, whose first wife, Flora, died in 1977. In 22 years of marriage, Rosemary and William Hewlett traveled the world, and divided their time between Portola Valley and Sun Valley. They shared com-mon interests in the outdoors, their large families, and multiple charities, family members said. Mr. Hewlett, who died in 2001, ignited her philanthropic inter-ests. She became actively involved on the boards of Menlo College and the San Francisco Opera Company, and was one of the founding board members of the Peninsula Bridge program, pro-moting academic and personal success for motivated middle-school students from under-resourced local communities. The Bridge program in particular gave her much satisfaction, family members said.

She was also a member of the order of the Dames of Malta and numerous other clubs and orga-nizations. The family describes her as a “vibrant spirit who touched all who met her.” Until very recently, she continued to travel the world and take holidays with family, close friends, and her caretaker for 17 years, Jose Pinto. She is survived by sons David Bradford of Tiburon, Robert Bradford of Woodside, Peter Bradford of Portola Valley, and Jeffrey Bradford of Kauai and Sun Valley; daughter Deborah Brad-ford Whelan of Atherton; eight grandchildren; and her caretak-ers, Jose Pinto and Elda Chavez and their family. A private family service and cel-ebration took place Saturday, Nov. 6. Burial will be at the Ketchum Cemetery in Ketchum, Idaho. The family prefers memorial donations to Peninsula Bridge, 457 Kingsley Ave., Palo Alto, CA 94301. Visit peninsulabridge.org/support.

Audrey Rust of Menlo Park, the longtime leader of Pen-insula Open Space Trust

(POST), will receive this year’s 2010 Athena Award, the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce has announced. Ms. Rust will receive the award at a Chamber luncheon Nov. 17 at the Garden Court Hotel in Palo Alto. The award honors women who demonstrate excellence and cre-ativity in business, contribute to the quality of life in their com-munities, and help other women realize their leadership potential. Under her leadership since,

POST has p r o t e c t e d 63,000 acres of open space land in San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. “Audrey Rust’s achievements in more than two decades as presi-dent of Peninsula Open Space Trust are as magnificent as the natural spaces she has worked so hard to preserve,” Congress-woman Anna Eshoo said in a let-ter supporting her nomination. These lands have become parts of the National Parks System, the National Wildlife Refuge

System, California State Parks, county and city parks, regional open space preserves, and private farmland. Prior to her tenure at POST, Ms. Rust worked with the Sierra Club, Yale University and Stan-ford University. She has served on numerous local, state and national organizations, primarily in conservation and housing. Athena International established the Athena award in 1982, a profes-sional businesswoman’s organiza-tion dedicated to woman’s leader-ship. Various host organizations, including chambers of commerce, administer the award annually. Tickets for the luncheon are avail-able by calling 324-3121. A

Woodside High grads plan to tour Europe For two weeks in June of 2011, some graduates of Woodside High School plan to explore Italy, France and Spain on an EF edu-cational tour. They will visit the Cinque Terre of Italy, the French Riviera, Barcelona and Madrid,

according to Lisa Camera, the teacher facilitator. “After the studentsí extensive study of European history and lit-erature, this will be a very reward-ing experience for all,” she said. The tour costs about $4,000 per student, including airfare, accom-modations, guided tours, most meals, and basic incidentals. To help defray the costs for this the diverse population of student travelers, donations may be sent to: Lisa Camera, c/o Woodside High School, 199 Churchill Ave., Woodside, CA 94062. Make checks payable to: Woodside High School.†Note on memo line: Donation: Lisa Camera Tour 2011.

“If I want a Best Seller, I advertise in the Almanac and the Weekly.” – Lyn Jason Cobb

As a Realtor serving Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Atherton, Portola Valley and Woodside, I do my utmost to provide extraordinary service to my clients. The Almanac and the Palo Alto Weekly is always where I advertise fi rst because I like the home delivery, editorial focus, and it is a great value. I have always had great results promoting open homes in the Palo Alto Weekly and The Almanac, and I also run in special publications like Spring and Fall Real Estate, Neighborhoods and Info Menlo because of the great coverage and online presence. I am also a big believer in the Palo Alto Weekly’s Open Home Guide, which is by far the most accurate and comprehensive. I’ve had many buyers bring in the guide to my ‘Open Homes’ to see what I have listed.”

OUR NEIGHBORHOODS is coming!

Coming to homes Dec. 29 (The Almanac) and

Dec. 31, 2010 (Palo Alto Weekly and Mountain View Voice)

For many reasons, the Midpeninsula area has been the most sought-after address to call home and to locate a business. Communities like Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Atherton, Portola Valley, Woodside, Los Altos and Mountain View lead the way by maintaining some of the best schools in the nation, by providing superior community services and infrastructure, and by helping establish the Bay Area as the center of innovation and technology.

Each year we produce Our Neighborhoods, a publication showcasing the many neighborhoods unique to their own communities. Each neighborhood is featured, capturing its particular qualities and resources, including a map of the neighborhood, schools, parks and more.
