Hungerford Town Council is setting an example for the rest of the United Kingdom with its financial management.
In times of extreme national municipal austerity, the council through sheer skill, thrift and determination has managed to place itself in a financial position with £497,587 in its coffers.
Commenting on the previous night’s revelations in the monthly town council meeting, town clerk Claire Barnes told The Adviser the council was watching everything it spent and was very careful with its investments.
She said the council was working as a team under its mayor Cr Martin Crane OBE and the chairman of the council’s finance and general purposes committee and deputy mayor Cr Rupert Thompson who had contributed “fantastic commercial experience”.
MAYOR RE-ELECTEDMonday’s council meeting saw the mayor re-elected for his
second term and Cr Rupert Thompson persuaded not to retire from council. Cr Crane said Cr Thompson, who had given energetic, determined and dedicated service had been granted a 4-month sabatical to cope with his new business pressures. His position would then be considered.
Cr Thompson did not seek re-appointment as deputy mayor and the council elected Cr Martyn Hopkins to the position.
In nominating Cr Crane for a second term, Cr Thompson said Cr Crane had presided over a good working administration, the bringing in of new councillors and new initiatives along with a strong council staff. Attention was being given to Hungerford development in the bigger picture.
A second term of office would ensure consistency and help in development of good relations with West Berkshire Council.
COUNCIL SETS EXAMPLE FOR UK
Hungerford Hares Running Club meet every Tuesday night, 7.30pm at Hungerford Rugby Club. They run Beginners’ Programmes twice a year, the next one starting 15th May, anyone who is interested can just turn up. The club is really excited to announce their first event called the Hungerford Harey 8! The multi-terrain 8 mile course is at 10.30am on 1st July. The start and finish will be at the Hungerford Rugby Club.

John O’Gaunt Community Technology College governors had 29 applications for head teacher, the retiring head Neil Spurdell told Hungerford Town Council on Monday night.
Mr Spurdell gave council a briefi ng on the sound state of the college and said he would continue to take an interest in it after he left in 10 weeks’time.
He said he was proud of the college’s achievements and its staff and students who were conducting themselves well at school and in public.
He said he was leaving a happy college and one for the local community to be proud of.
He was confi dent in the future of the college which was making signifi cant forward strides.

Location of a Hungerford Bridge Street pedestrian crossing is presenting
a problem for Hungerford Town Council and Hungerford Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is concerned at the probable loss of parking space.
Concern has been expressed at the removal of the mature willow tree near the northern end of the new Hungerford canal pedestrian bridge. Hungerford
Town Council was told on Monday night that West Berkshire Council had deemed the tree unsafe and would replace it with another willow.

25th April 2012: Mr William Shand M.D –“A Man that looks on Glass” Hungerford Historical Association was given an ex-cellent talk on the history of stained glass by William Shand, a retired Consultant Surgeon from St Barts Hospital, took the title of his talk from a George Her-bert poem “The Elixir”. Mr Shand suggested that the only way to view stained glass properly is by looking through binoculars so that all the details of the windows can be appreciated. In addition to the magnifi cent windows in Canterbury and York Cathedrals he highlighted several church-es that should be visited:- Fairford, Gloucestershire which is the only church in England with it’s original glass; All Saints Church, Tudeley, Kent which is the only church in the world to have all it’s twelve win-dows by Marc Chagall; The Chapel of St Anthony at Oundle School, built as a memorial to the fallen of WW1 with the windows designed by John Piper and made by Patrick Reyntiens; St Andrew’s Church in Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire which has the only win-dow in England designed by Tiffany.The next talk will be given by Roger Day – “Sav-ernake at War” on Wednesday, 25th May 2012 at 7.30pm-Shelagh Parry
CHILTON SCHOOL FETE TO INCLUDECHILDREN OF UPSALA CIRCUSChilton Foliat Primary School will host the Children of Upsala Circus on July 7 as part of the school’s annual fete.The fete will open at noon with a circus theme and and at 5.30pm there will be a hog roast and circus en-tertainment.The 10 children will come from St Petersburg and will be on a cultural exchange visit to the UK.The children will share their amaxing skills and relate thei lives in Russia.Local businesses and individuals are invited to become involved and to sponsor elements of the fete or donate raffl e prizes.Upsala Circus began in 2000 and is a social programme for underprivileged children from St Petersburg area.
