Regarded as the historic college town of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro-plex, Denton is a local hotspot for music, art, and a unique atmosphere. This charming reputation sometimes overshadows the city’s appeal foroutdoor recreation, and area residents may be surprised to also discov-er Denton as a scenic getaway. In addition to its neighborhood parksand playgrounds, Denton offers major trails and special-interest parks.

On the north end of Denton, visitors can enjoy open scenery while visiting Denton’s water park or free, fully equippedskate park. Water Works Park features giant slides and a continuous-flowing river, but the park’s amount of green space is not so typical.Along with the fact that coolers and outside food are allowed, guestsoften take advantage of the park’s calm, grassy areas by setting up forthe day and picnicking.

Area residents may also take pleasure in Denton’s more unique facili-ties. Located in Lake Forest Park, Wiggly Field Dog Park provides dogstations, both human and pet drinking fountains, and fenced areas toseparate large and small dogs. Across town, hobbyists and athletescan advantage from a variety of facilities such as a batting range, a golfpractice center, a disc golf course, and a radio-control aircraft runway.

Online users can discover Denton’s parks and trails by visiting the “Parks and Trails” page on the City of Denton Parksand Recreation website, www.dentonparks.com. The site gives the option to explore with an interactivemap or browse

through the parks and trails listing. Each park page features photos, directions, and a list of the park’s amenities.

The Denton Parks and Recreation Department also utilizes the city’sextensive facilities by offering “enriching” programs, including annualfun runs, free movies in the park, and a community fishing program.Through the department’s outdoor recreational program, area resi-dents can even explore Denton’s creeks and trails with skilled staff andknowledgeable volunteers. The program allows participants to kayak, canoe, hike, and geocache without having previous experience or theirown equipment. Additional information on activities and programs isalso available at the department’s website.

Denton County Transportation Authority

By Bj LewisStaff Writer

Coming to you in 2012: a bet-ter, more efficient DentonCounty Transportation Agency.

Optimism and expectationsare high for the transit agencyfor the New Year as officials planfor changes to service, vehiclesand long-range planning thatwill benefit present and futureriders.

“2012 is going to be the firstyear where DCTA has been atrue operating agency,” said DeeLeggett, vice president of com-munications and planning. “Wehave been capital intensive forso long with the planning andbuilding of the A-train, we’relooking forward to maintaining

and improving our investmentand our service to our cus-tomers.”

That maintenance planincludes short term improve-ments in the next five years andamendments to the agencies 25-year plan which includes imple-menting new transit corridors.

DCTA president Jim Clinesaid officials are starting to setconditions for future success.

“Our long range service plantalks about a number of thingsnot currently funded, we wantto eliminate any barriers.”

Leggett said the agency isalready moving toward imple-menting the short-termimprovements with extendedservices for the A-train, making

better connections with busschedules and looking at addi-tional places in Denton andLewisville that need bus service.

The agency has been siftingthrough public input gained bya community-wide surveylaunched in the middle ofNovember and will use theresponses in future plans.

“We know where we want toget, but the survey will informus to which services are priori-ties,” she said.

An example is changes tomid-day bus service. Currentlythe A-train stops running(between 2:30 to 3 p.m.) atwhich time the agency runs amid-day bus service. That serv-ice has been less than satisfacto-

ry to riders who want the trainto run all day.

“That is something we willlook closely in 2012,” Leggettsaid.

Leggett also said the agency islooking at extending Route 9,which was a university-centricroute that only ran during theschool year. A boom in ridershipto the route has agency officialslooking at how to make it morepermanent and throughout theday.

Leggett said there will beminor schedule changes inJanuary and then the agencywill likely roll out with schedulechanges with additional service

in the summer looking at mid-day service and tweaking busroutes to improve frequency.

Rail service will be slightlychanged as officials are still opti-mistic about the brand newSwedish-made Stadler rail carsmaking their debut in the spring.

Leggett said work is beingdone on a waiver that will allowthe agency to run both the newStadler vehicles and the current

older Dallas Area RapidTransit-leased vehicles at thesame time. All indications saythe waiver will be granted soon.

The agency will roll out a fullfleet of the new cars by August,a move that will give the railservice greater operating effi-ciencies, Leggett said.

The newer cars utilizes lessfuel, allow the service to transi-tion from 25 minute frequenciesbetween trips to 20 minutes, bikestorage, level boarding for peoplein wheelchairs, strollers andgreater overall train capacity.
