Greetings,

It would be a great honor to be able to introduce myself, Nadhirah Norizan as the President of Ace Society from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) of the academic year of 2015/2016. I am delighted to be given the golden opportunity to continue the ACE legacy that encourages students of UNMC to “do good and feel good”.

First and foremost, ACE is a non-profitable organization that focuses mainly on charity. It is also solely run by full time students in UNMC for the past 8 years. ACE is abbreviated from three words, “Action”, “Compassion” and “Empathy”. As the name ACE suggests, our ultimate aim of the society is to instill the feelings of compassion and empathy in our ACE volunteers through the act of charity.

Our main direction for ACE this year is to incorporate the idea of family and thus building an ACE Family. We believe that building rapport with our volunteers is also crucial as we would like to see each and every member of ACE to grow and benefit from every volunteering event that they sign up with us.

ACE Society has several departments that we venture into, such as education, where we aim to help reduce education disparity, home visits and general events. Each year we organize events such as Nottingham Charity Run and ‘Jom Botak’ to raise funds for the underprivileged, poor and the needy. We also look into visiting homes of the underprivileged children and animal shelters. Being able to be with the orphans often remind us of how fortunate we are and how we get play our part to doing charity. Through our departments, we hope to create awareness and provide a great platform to help the needy while having fun and also to get to know each other.

Having being in the committee of ACE Society for 3 years, I have seen how ACE made me grow as a person and how it has allowed me to foster bonds beyond just the students in the school but also the children from the orphanages that we regularly visit each month. It is always a nice fuzzy feeling when we are able to help others and when they thank us with their utmost sincere happy smiles. I hope to be able to share this warm and fuzzy feeling with everyone in ACE

As the president of ACE Society, my only wish is to continue the ACE legacy and continue to contribute to the society.

Thank you and we hope to hear more from you soon.

Nottingham Charity Run

Introduction

Nottingham Charity Run 2016 (NCR) is the 8th annual event organized by ACE Society of the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC). It will be held on the 27th of March 2016 (Sunday) in UNMC. This charity run is an event hold with the purpose of raising funds and fostering awareness for a charitable call in Malaysia. The Nottingham Charity Run will be the 8th charity run which ACE society will be responsible for. During the first charity run in 2013, a total of RM18, 000 was raised for Hospis Malaysia. In March 2014, a total of RM36, 000 was raised for children development fund under World Vision Malaysia. In March 2015, a total of RM 33,000 was raised for the mentally and physically handicapped children under the Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children’s Association of Selangor. NCR will be a massive event that offer favorable opportunities to students to raise funds for the children of Home for Special People Cheras, Selangor. We are working towards helping mentally handicapped children in all possible aspects by using our capacity and resources to enhance their well-being and nurturing their potential as developing individuals. We also seek to raise awareness on the hardships the disabled face every day and we plan on using the funds to further develop and provide better residential care facilities to the children of the home.

Purpose Nottingham Charity Run aspires to raise funds for the Home for Special People of Cheras, Selangor through sales of tickets for the run and direct donations from participants and companies. One of our main objectives is to pitch up the image of the University. Furthermore, we aim to provide a platform to boost involvement of students and the rest of the community of UNMC in volunteer-related activities, to be more enthusiastic and also to market the promising potential of the students of UNMC. Moreover, to further prepare the students for their future employment, this event will be able to flourish the passion of students towards the call thus revealing the diverse and enthusiastic young talents who are developing their soft skills. Nottingham Charity Run seeks to be a large scale event that will be made possible by ACE Society along with the help of other clubs and societies, students, staff and the executive members of Student Association.

Impact

Nottingham Charity Run 2016 intent to leave a lasting impact on the students of The University of

Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) by raising awareness about charity and ACE Society UNMC.

The event itself will guide the community to become obliging, empathetic, and understanding towards

the needy society. Committee members as well as volunteers involved will gain perceptivity on

organizing a large scale event and paying attention to every aspect there is to effectuate the run. Skills

that might be beneficial such as technical and organizational skills will be instilled in them as they take

up on this journey.

This event also seeks to foster interpersonal skills of students as it is mandatory for them to promote the event not just internally, but also externally to the public. Moreover, time management skills will also be practiced as they will all be given specific deadlines for their tasks. Developing good social skills will aid them in becoming more confident and more tolerant towards different working styles.

Furthermore, given that this is a charity event, it is necessary for all committee members to know that

the main goal of this event is to raise awareness on the mentally handicapped members of the society,

and getting more people on board with helping the cause. We also seek to leave an impact on society,

regardless of the size, just as long as we have made a difference for a better future.

Beneficiary

Home for Special Children of Cheras, Selangor as Beneficiary

The Home for Special Children of Cheras was established by mother and son, Lee Swee Moi and Ten Yen

Han in 2006. Lee and her son first started this welfare center holding on to the belief that mentally

disabled children, with the proper guidance and care, they could be more successful in life than a

normal person who disable themselves. The home aims to adopt and take care mentally handicapped

children, mainly Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism children irrespective of race and religion. At

present, the home has 32 occupants of all races, 5 supporting staffs inclusive of Lee and her son, and a

part timer teacher. Majority of the occupants, children at the age ranging from 10-19 years old were

abandoned by their own family. Lee hopes to train and educate each child according to their special

ability for them to function independently in the future. However, due to restrains of expenditure, no

special treatments nor therapies were conducted on these children. The home has a monthly expense of

approximately RM15, 000 and as a voluntary and Non-Government Organization (NGO), they rely solely

on public donors and contributors through regular fund-raising projects to meet the expenditure.
