work to scale our team at Likeable Local. This year, I thought I'd ask my friendsover at the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) about the 1 most impressiveinterview question to ask.

The YEC is an inviteonly organization comprised of the world’s most promisingyoung entrepreneurs. I asked these CEO's and entrepreneurs what single mostimpressive interview questions applicants have asked (or they they wishapplicants would ask). These are their answers, followed by mine:

1. What New Skills Can I Hope to Learn Here?

This is just my perspective, but I've always secretlyhoped to hear this question. It signifies a few positivethings: the applicant acknowledges they don't knoweverything and it signals both humility and potential. Thisindividual is actively seeking knowledge and using thatas a criteria to judge opportunity. They know that skillsare important, not just knowledge. – Brian Honigman,

BrianHonigman.com

2. How Do You See This Position Evolving in The Next Three Years?

When job applicants ask this question, it means they'relooking for a position where they can blossom long term. They're committed to their own career growth and beingselective about only accepting offers from companiesthat will give them the framework for that growth. Andthey're also tactful and strategic enough to let me knowin a polite, subtle way. – Jared Brown, CoFounder,

Hubstaff

3. What Can I Help to Clarify That Would Make Hiring Me an Easy Decision?

At Launch Academy, we always coach our graduating students to ask thisquestion at the end of an interview. It shows that that you're eager to get the job, you're amenable to feedback, you're confident in your abilities and that you canclear up any uncertainty. – Dan Pickett, CoFounder, Launch Academy

4. How Can 'X' Scenario Move 'Y' Idea Forward?

I love when an engineeringapplicant asks a question aboutour business model, or amarketing applicant asks aboutour development process. At asmall company, holistic thinkingis essential to make a killer

product: You have to combine business needs with technical expertise, and thepeople who are interested in both areas often come up with the most creativesolutions.

– AJ Shankar, CEO, Everlaw, Inc.

5. If You Could Improve One Thing About The Company, What Would ItBe?

Any qualified candidate should be interviewing theprospective employer as much as they are beinginterviewed. By asking about where the company canimprove, the interviewee not only establishes that theinterview process is a twoway street, but may also findout some important information to use in her decisionmaking. If the answer given is not candid, there is

information in that as well. – Peter Minton, Founder & President, Minton LawGroup, P.C.

6. What's The Most Frustrating Part of Working Here?

This and other courageous questions demand athoughtful response. We encourage questions thatrequire courage to ask and thoughtfulness to answer. Ifyou can do it in an interview, you can probably do it withcustomers. And every day we need to have courageous sometimes uncomfortable conversations withcustomers. – Avery Fisher, President, Remedify

Them?

No matter if they'd like to admit it or not, every CEO andhiring manager has their picture perfect "ideal" candidatefor the job. If an employee asked this question orsomething similar during their interview, it would not onlyshow me that they're sincerely interested in the job, butwilling to do whatever it takes to become the bestemployee possible. – Phil Laboon, President, Eyeflow

Internet Marketing

8. How Did You Get Your Start?

When asked this question as a CEO, it shows that theindividual you are interviewing is interested in your pastand what you have accomplished up to this point. Youwant employees who buy into you and your idea, so it isimperative that you hire people who are on board withyour vision. – Jayna Cooke, CEO, EVENTup

9. What Is Holding the Company Back?

Every company has immediate challenges that prevent itfrom achieving it's full potential. A great employee willidentify those bottlenecks, develop a plan to solve themand then execute on the strategy. A great candidate willbe doing whatever she can to start identifying thesechallenges even before getting the offer.

– Sathvik Tantry, CoFounder and CEO, FormSwift

10. What Keeps You Up at Night?

I love this question because it demonstrates an adherence to our culture ofchallenging everyone while also indicating that the candidate understands thatour existence is always in flux as a startup. When a candidate shows that shehas a similar feeling and/or the outline of a way to think about addressing thatfear, it goes a long way. – Kofi Kankam, Chief Executive Officer, Admit.me

11. What Concerns/Reservations Do You Have AboutMe for This Position?

This question shows that thecandidate is being thoughtfulabout the job, and cares abouttruly earning the role andexcelling if they join the team. It’s also smart because it allowsthem to address concerns on

the spot and in person. – John Berkowitz, Cofounder and Chief RevenueOfficer, Yodle

Those are the 11 favorite interview questions from the YEC. As for me, myfavorite interview question is:

How will the work I’ll be doing contribute to the organization’s mission?

(others here)

Now it's YOUR turn. What do you think? What are some interviewquestions that have left you impressed? What are some of the worst anapplicant can ask? Have you used any of these on a job interview? I wish I had seen this earlier! I had an interview this morning and asked if therewould be any particular projects that would be very important in the first threemonths of the job. I was a little surprised by how much discussion it generatedand it gave me a much better insight into what the job involved

I search the Internet for the principals of the company, what the company doesand plan how I can improve their profits because, I can usually spot whatappears to be gaps. In fact I considered doing that for a living. Ask how longtheir average employee has been there. Also check how often they run ads andhire and fire.

My point of reference is this: what could a competitor do to jeopardize yourmarket share.. or even put you out of business... figure that out and do ityourself, and you've just made yourself a better company. That's my focus... tomake you a better company!

I agree with Phil above but would change, "Who's Your Ideal Candidate And HowCan I Make Myself More Like Them?" to Who's Your Ideal employee And can Ilearn from them to become an asset to your company? I also ABSOLUTELYlove Dan's question, "What Can I Help to Clarify That Would Make Hiring Me anEasy Decision?" YES!!!! Ask! If you are on the edge of my decision with oneother hire, this can be the question that gets you in! I want confidence, a willingto learn and take on tasks (no matter how small). I look for someone willing tolearn and capable of learning. I want to hear that you are going the extra mileand will prove to me that you are an asset. I want to hear in an interview that youwill be here to make my life and anyone in the offices life easier and what canyou do to make this happen. I find that confidence in who you are with a humbleperspective of who you are is a key employee. In my line of work, I also love tohire waitress and waiters! They are multitaskers that are willing and able to dealwith anyone with respect and courtesy. They give it all they have and enjoypleasing people and working hard. Best of luck!

How does this company get the most from its employees? (If you're not talkingto your potential manager)How do you get the best from your people? (If you are talking to your manager)

These get to the management style of the company and how they value anddevelop employees. I wished I'd asked these when I was first starting out.

The only suggestions I saw that were both important and useful were Stephen'sabout failures, as everyone fails and what they learn from that is always whatwill lead a person into the future. The second was Merry's. Do they pay equally? The Ageism question will never be answered honestly unfortunately, you'llalways get the blanket "NO" answer even though you know most companies do.

During the interview, consider NOT using the overused words of "passionate","authentic", and "have a nice day"! Some of the questions in the article maythrow the person conducting the interview off balance and I'm not sure that is anadvantage. I also think that some of the questions are too personal and franklyrude. "What keeps you up at night?". Whaaaat? "How did you get your start?"may be considered too personal. It's an interview, not a luncheon.

I wanted to empower you to stay calm and fight back with smartsrather than venom. For most people, quitting is not an option orthe right answer when the boss gets a bit nasty.

The most successful people master their emotions. Doing great work andbuilding relationships helps you stay calm and in control.

The response to that post did not surprise me; there are lots of toxic bosses outthere. I know, because I have had a few of them myself. And as the CEO of Aha!(which is visual product roadmap software), I do everything I can to helpemployees and the business grow with no pain.

Here are a few comments you shared with me that highlight how you handle badbosses:

A true professional can bring about a feeling of insecurity in their boss. Ifhe is not emotionally intelligent, he feels threatened. If a boss is toxicthere is usually a reason.

Sometimes you just can't negotiate, tolerate or reason with a toxic bossbecause she believes she is always right. Finding yourself between a rockand a hard place with a toxic boss is not where you want to be.

I expected these kinds of stories, but this comment caught me off guard and gotme thinking:

One of the things I have learned over the years is that not all difficultbosses are toxic. The managers who challenge us in a positive way arethe ones that we learn the most from. Tough situations bring out the bestin all of us.

Maybe I had it all wrong. Maybe the greatest leaders actually outsmart andmanipulate their employees at times (for good). After thinking it through, Irealized that I try to do this myself sometimes.

Over the years, I have managed a few hundred people either directly orindirectly. I have had the "crier," the "sleeper," the "unstable" employees whoselfsabotaged without knowing it. And in each case, I did my best to lead the

person to be better than they thought was possible.

Here is how good leaders work to outsmart people who report to them. I suggestgreat managers:

Remove barriersTo connect with other people, we need to know what makes them tick. Do youknow your employees' motivations, or what makes them feel the mostaccomplished? Having regular one on one conversations with your team helpsidentify the barriers that hold them back from their greatest performance.

Set goalsIf employees do not know where they are going, how will they get there?Encourage employees to set weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals forthemselves. Review these goals with them regularly, and track progress towardssuccess. If problems arise, you will both see them coming and be able to workthrough them together.

Push hardSometimes, people get comfortable underperforming and never reset their ownexpectations. As their manager, it is your job to push them to achieve more.Assign them stretch projects that strengthen their skills and help them addressareas of weakness.

The best managers turn potential into performance. They do this bylooking ahead and being a resource and an advocate for each member ofthe team.

Toxic managers run wild. But sometimes we forget to see the boss who has anedge and is using it to make us better. So, be slow to judge. It might very well bethat your boss is smarter than you think. And that wisdom might be used to helpmake you shine.

How has your boss manipulated you for the better?
